- Claudia Lennear is one of the most well-known and successful background vocalists of all time. Since the late 1960s, she has supported some of the era's most well-known musicians and performed at some of the most significant and life-changing musical events.
In 1967, she became a member of Ike and Tina Turner's backing choir, The Ikettes. In just three years, she was featured on dozens of TV shows, toured the world (including opening for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 American tour), and recorded eight albums, culminating in the Turners' all-time biggest song, #4 "Proud Mary."
Christened by the LeonLifers as "Music Royalty," she was a background vocalist for Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen and George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh. Claudia was a member of Leon Russell's Shelter People and the inspiration behind songs such as “A “Song For You” and “This Masquerade,” written by Leon Russell, “Brown Sugar” by Mick Jagger, and David Bowie’s “Lady Grinning Soul.” In 2019, Lennear was inducted in the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. She is featured in the 2013 Oscar-winning Documentary 20 Feet from Stardom.
Claudia currently teaches Spanish, French, and English at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California.

I cried along with her.
Beautiful lady, beautiful song.

So many emotions in you my dear. Thank you Claudia for the wonderful words and Rip Leon
Heaven has one big angel now with Leon.
"I think we hit it off because Gram introduced me as an Ikette..." HA ! Couldn't be because you're one of the most beautiful women to ever breathe right?! Bless you Ms Lennear 😍
she needs to write a book!!! these stories!
She sure seems like a sweet, classy lady. Thanks for interviewing her you guys.
This was so awesome. Thank you. From a 75 year old Texan. R.I.P. Dear Leon.
Thank you for sharing such wonderful memories of your time with Leon. He truly was an amazing, talented, unique songwriter, musician and producer. Mad Dogs was a big part of my teenage years. Thank you for your music. You are appreciated.
Still so beautiful within and without.
"Ballad for a Soldier" with Marc Benno was one of the many Russell masterpieces.Everything off the Asylum Choir records is amazing.
A beautiful lady, a beautifully humble soul sister. I truly hope & pray she's able to make the Grand Opening of the Church Studio in April.
Thank you Church Studio for bringing this building, Leon's legacy, the souls that loved or presently love Leon & the artists past, present & future who chose the Church Studio to be their vehicle to laying down the recordings of their talent. RIP Leon & the others that are playing in the Heavenly Band.
Lovely to hear Claudia’s introduction to Leon and her memories of working with him. She feels like part of the family - so warm and genuine. Thank you Claudia for being part of my youth listening to you on so many favorites.
Love Claudia!
We do too!
Beautiful Claudia. Thank you for sharing your experience with the wonderful Leon Russell. ❤️
Loved hearing these stories & songs from Claudia Lennear. The love she holds for Leon Russell is testimony to the man he was. Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️❤️
What a beautiful woman!
Enjoyed this interview with Claudia very much! Great lady & insight & love for Leon! Both Legends! Stranger in a Strange Land is my favorite too. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was great. This was the best interview with Claudia that I have ever heard. I loved what she had to say. It would have been so great to have been a part of that musical family.
We agree! She is a class act!
Simply Beautiful .
She totally blows me away
"One of the most beautiful Human Beings I've ever met". ~Butch Robins He has colorful memories of working with Leon & describing the first time Emily introduced him to Claudia...
Leon’s classical pianist training expanded his musical range
Love your stories your a beautiful woman so nice of you to share these memories Love great music 🎶 from the past that's all we have there won't never be great music like this again
Thank you, Claudia, for recounting such heartfelt and loving memories..I could listen to your soft & engaging voice for hours!:) Leon was the 1st concert I went to!..& Bob Dylan was in the audience.:) *Did Leon write the song 'I Should've Sent Roses' for his first wife, Carla Brown? I think it's the most beautiful, poignant, & sad, 'somebody-done-somebody-wrong' song.. I believe they had at least 1 past life together, and likely will again.. (altho lately at 67, i don't wanna go thru another life with my great love..it's enough already..:)) Thank you again, & TY The Church Studio!
Thank you!!! ❤❤❤
Had such crush on her and Tina Turner... they weren't just talented they could dance!
What a great lady!
I love her
I had her album 'Phew' with that great song 'Not at all' (written for Mick Jagger?) I'll stop right here because further words for such a talented goddess are unnecessary and redundant.
She looks a little like Dionne Warwick. I like her spirit.
I fell in love with you and Kathi McDonald in the Homewood sessions. You looked amazing in a short jacket and bikini top, what a body. Who is the lady holding the baby with dark long hair?
