For better or worse, I feel like when I listen to Rita talk about these events I'm hearing as close to the truth as anyone will ever hear. Thank you, Rita. Lots of honesty, pure class!
We lived next door to Joe whilst he rented a house in Twickenham, London. Rita was there, about 1970, then again in 73, maybe 74. She was very kind to me, I was a kid then. Ahh, this was when rock stars fled the UK due to tax (supertax) reasons. If I remember right, Joe hardly had any real money back then, well that's what he told my dad anyway. Hi Rita! Patrick x
Poor Joe Cocker. Thankfully he did have Rita to help him through it all. Maybe it didn’t seem like it at the time but those songs on that album are just raw energy you can still feel every time you listen to Joe’s voice. I still get chills listening to his version of Cry Me A River! It’s phenomenal! I am so glad they all persevered in the tour despite all the bad vibes.
I always liked Rita due to her calm, inspirational nature and way of singing. Just listen to *We´re all alone* - what a great song with her on the lead vocals.
Very few people of her stature put this kind of effort into understanding the questions and providing such in depth answers. I usually end up cutting these vids short due to the self serving perspectives of most musicians.
For me, MD&E is the greatest of the concert films of that time. Quality of music and its recording, quality of filming, quality of performances, and the close documentation of that “hippy”/gypsy musician life of the time that exists! SO glad we have it and all the rest!
Excellent interview with great details, her version of Superstar is one of the greatest ever. Good to see her give proper credit to Leon Russell one of the greatest ever.
She has that same crooked mouth placement while talking as Pam Grier. IDK why I find that so charming. Rita is an absolute GEM. I’ve loved that voice since I was 13 so more than 30 years now.
Rita, fell in love w/you w/ Joe's maddogs/englishmen. Much respect to you and how you've kept it beautifully real. Thank you for the wonderful feelings for 50 yrs.
This provides great insight. Joe Cocker is my favourite all time artist, and the work with Leon Russell, Mad Dogs & Englishmen my favourite Album. I had no idea of the various dynamics at play, but I guess that’s true in the stories of so many artists.
Yeah, .. One feared he blow a fuse..style... What a Class Act. And Leon complete opposite, Miss Then Both Hopefully...! Was my Whole Youth, hanging on every thing they Had for Us. Saw the both Live, Solo tours early 70's... Was a Dream to Behold, for Me..!
"Many gifted musicians"? Oh really? They were the best professional musicians around... If he had pushed a little more Leon might have gotten the rest of the Delaney and Bonnie's band, Eric Clapon and George Harrison on guitar
Can we please not say “outro”? What precisely is wrong with “ending”? “Intro” is short for “introduction”. What the fuck is “outro” supposed to be short for? “Outroduction”? It’s idiotic and repulsive and completely and utterly superfluous and unnecessary. In any case, the story as I understand it is that Jim Gordon was caught using Derek and the Dominos recording time to make his own solo album. One of the cuts on that solo album was to be some version of the song “Time” that he had apparently co-written with Rita Coolidge. Gordon was told that his theft of studio time would be overlooked if he contributed the piece to the Dominos album. “Layla” is credited to Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon. It’s unlikely that any of the Dominos (other than Gordon) knew that Coolidge had had any part in writing the song. I’ve listened to “Time”, and it’s pretty mediocre song. It works much better as an instrumental spliced onto “Layla”.
Amazing Back Story, brings Light to the Amazing Movie "Mad Dog's & Englishmen" Tour....a Thumbprint of Our Awesome 70's Rock Era..!! I love that part, where'd we find the Energy to Go On..?? ...Sniff Sniff...>! Whoops..!! IF you saw the Movie, you will understand...! ;p
The only person that Dee Anthony ever looked out for was himself. He was a thug. That tour nearly killed Joe and Anthony could not have cared less, just as long as the ticket money came his way.
Been in lust with Miss Coolidge since seeing the documentary in a cinema, early 70s. And Leon! We were so puzzled by how much he clearly was in control. And it was never made public. Today his agents lawyers 'brand' charlatans would never allow it.
Dee Anthony was one of the notoreous scoundrels of artist management. If he wasn't 'connected' he certainly wanted his clients to believe he was. He made threats to many artists he managed like Rita describes here......

No sweeter lady in music. However, does anyone know anything about sound in these modern times?Good god!Turn up the volume on the interviewer. It is not cool to fail at the simpilist of recordings.Nice interview despite the sounds. Doc BC
Hey! You need to be a little more humble yourself. I’ve been making documentaries for 35 years . If you understood the usual filming method for docs - it’s to keep the interviewer’s audio low as it’s not intended for use in the final product. This interview was for my joe cocker film. It was never intended to be used in this form. However with UA-cam , it seems there is a potential audience for long outtakes from “the cutting room floor “. Hence it’s here for all to enjoy.
People keep complaining about this but even though he is lower in volume I can hear every word the interviewer says...? Are you sure you’re not just going deaf?
There is a portion where i cannot hear him at all. I wanted to, Frustrating. Enjoyed the rest tho. So, thx. Long Live R&R, & the Spirits of Joe & Leon. My first album 💙✊🏼🎶
Jim Gordon and Jim Keltner were the drummers, no wasted money there, and Bobby Keys was on sax. That was a supergroup, to be honest, it's like will not be seen again. And Leon is a decent guitarist on that tour. They made much more than they spent on the tour, album, and film, I'm sure.
@@franktatom1837did you listen to the interview she said there was hanger on people who couldn't sing and Leon took over when Joe was what people came to see and hear
@roccopersico9275 Yes, but those folks weren't getting paid like the real musicians, just per diem and lodging, and they didn't get any album credit. Joe's manager took a percentage of Joe's net profit from the tour, don't forget. Joe also didn't write songs so he had no significant royalty stream to sustain him between tours. He wouldn't have even toured if Leon had turned down the job. It wasn't Leon's fault that Joe didn't have any money when the tour ended. I'm sure Joe made a lot from the album after it was released, Rita is talking about the time right after the tour ended.
Joe signed a Dee Anthony contract that said Joe was responsible for funding the tour. Clearly, Joe didn't read the fine print. In any case, he was not capable of managing a tour. As his manager and the producer, that was Dee Anthony's job. Problem is, Anthony only ever cared about himself and concert takings. Leon saved Joe's bacon. As you have heard, Anthony was not going to accept no for an answer. No one else other than Leon had the contacts, musical cred and leadership to be able to put that show together in the unbelievably short time (8 days!) that was available before the tour was booked to start. The villain in all of this is the asshole Dee Anthony.
Leon put together a killer band and made Joe a household name in the U.S. Whatever it cost, Joe made it back many times over. And it is normal for the artist to be ultimately responsible for the cost of a tour, even these days. It is their tour, you know. They get the profit and bear the loss, if any.
For better or worse, I feel like when I listen to Rita talk about these events I'm hearing as close to the truth as anyone will ever hear. Thank you, Rita. Lots of honesty, pure class!

Rita's speaking voice is as beautiful as her singing voice.

Cry me a river is my favourite song of this production beside Sicks and Stones. You still can literally grap the energy with hands.
I was hanging on every word this lady said.... such a beautiful and talented person !!! Great stories she's lived.

Really only just discovered Leon Russell, wow what a talent. I'm going into my 60s now and it just gets better.
A very realistic sounding assessment from a clear-eyed witness.
Joe is incredible but so is Leon. The result is an absolutely brilliant concert video and Albums

I didn't see the tour, but I bought the double album and wore it out. It made me a fan of everybody involved.

I think I need Rita Coolidge in my life.
She sounds like a cool and genuine person. Cooked beans and cornbread, haha, that is good enough for me. She is awesome.

That woman is so articulate and smart... There is a lot to be said for letting someone else take care of the band.

The charisma and nimble mind of this interviewee alone is worth the price of admission.
