I like to watch old camera reviews! It feels like a time machine and I remember how excited I was about all the new cameras. Thank you Gordon for all your reviews.
You're welcome and you MUST check out my new Dino Bytes retro channel!
How would you rate the 450D in today's world ten years later , I've still got mine still takes great pics ?
Gordon, thank you very much for the review. Not only was the in-depth "live view" section very helpfuly, but also this was one of the most informative and generally interesting reviews on this unit I have seen as of yet. 5stars
Thanks for all the informative videos and the great website. I've been doing research for the last two weeks, and greatly due to your reviews, I've purchased my first real camera, and first DSLR, the Rebel XSi today. Thanks and keep up the good work, I love your website.
WOW! You really know your cameras! This was a great review with an "in-depth" look at some of its features.
I look forward to seeing more like this one on your site!
Thanks again!
Cheers! Don't forget to check out the full review at cameralabs . com and our tutorials at dslrtips . com!

Wow! Thank you so much. Your reviews are great! I'm watching them all today. Again, thanks for your help - it's making my decision on which camera to buy so much more informed. Merry christmas.
Yes it has a Bulb mode for long exposures. You can access it from the Manual mode setting.
30 seconds or bulb - see our full review at cameralabs . com for all details.
Thanks! Don't forget to check out the full reviews which go with the videos at cameralabs . com - and if you want to discuss your options, check out the cameralabs forums!
Hi Gordon! Another amazing review! Thank You! WOW they have really revamped that! nice to see their FINALLY offering a kit lens with IS! very nice :)
Thank you for your help! You undoubtedly saved me much time and money, not to mention your website is extremely clean and straight forward, Kudos to you brother!
Very good video tour! The review on the website was extremely helpful, too.
Don't forget we have full reviews of each camera you're considering at the Cameralabs . com website including full results at every sensitivity - so have a look at the results and gallery pages of these reviews and see what you think!
Check the verdict page of our 450D review at cameralabs . com, and also the best buys section...
It depends on the lens. The aperture range is indicated on the front - for this one the maximum is f3.5 when zoomed-out or f5.6 when zoomed-in.
They're aimed at different markets - the D60 is more entry-level. See our full reviews of both cameras at cameralabs . com for full details, and feel free to ask any Qs in the cameralabs forums.
Hi, glad you found the custom function - I did actually mention it on the design page of my review at cameralabs . com - the videos here are just brief overviews! I agree though, it's odd that Canon doesn't enable the AF in live view, or even Live View itself out of the box...
your reviews are the absolute best
Check out our D60 review at the Cameralabs . com website where we've directly compared it against the 400D / XTi!
You're very welcome! It is confusing, and thankfully, the new 500D / T1i is more helpful when it comes to using Live View - watch out for my video review coming soon!
You can customise the 'My menu' section to only display the things you'd like to change...
I'm a great believer in starting with one lens and getting used to it before spending on extras you might not want or need. But if you get a good price on the double lens kit, it's not a bad idea! Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Thank you Gordon!
In my opinion the best camera reviewer on UA-cam! ;-)
Thanks! Have a look at all three results pages on the 450D review at the cameralabs site (there's a link to the right of the video above) and you'll see direct comparisons between the Canon and the Sony A350... there's also a detailed comparison on the verdict page...
It depends what you want to take photos of. Go to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and first check out the lens buyers guide. Then have a look at the Canon lens group test, and if you have any other Qs, feel free to post in the cameralabs forums!
i love this video.
i purchased an xsi early in may, and have watched this vid at least 10 times.
you really got my heart pumping with this vid. . .i loved how you took the time to show off some of the features of this camera,
oh and great review on your site!
. . .heh and i stole your idea of taking photos of motherboards. . .now if only there wasn't so may dust bunnies on my board! :D
thnx.
Yes there is - the 450D / XSi comes with the remote control software for Windows and Macintosh.
Hi everyone, if you have any questions, feel free to ask on the cameralabs fourms - I don't have much time here on YT.
Thanks! Don't forget to check out the full reviews and our friendly forum at cameralabs . com!
Read the verdict and results pages of our 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com to compare them.
Yes, you can choose 5 seconds in manual or shutter priority.
This video celebrate ten years, what a leap for photo business, I have lot of great memories to 450d.
This seems a long time ago now! Hopefully my videos have improved!
I'll be getting this in a few weeks, yay
Have you looked at all three of our results pages? If you'd like to discuss it further, please post on the buying a new camera section of the cameralabs forum...
See the post below - Could be a variety of things. Make sure the card has plenty of room on it. Make sure AF is set to single or even manual focus. Make sure highlight tone priority is disabled. Make sure the ISO is not too big. Make sure the quality is JPEG only, not RAW.
Check the verdict page on our 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com to compare it against the 40D.
I'd always go for the kit anyway as even if you don't intend to use the lens much, it gives it better after sales value, and doesn't cost much more. It's a handy backup too.
All DSLRs have fully Automatic modes, so are fine for beginners - then you can check out our tutorials at dslrtips . com to find out more!
Sorry to hear that - I'm not experiencing any problems at my end and no-one else has mentioned it... have you tried accessing it from a different internet connection?
It's a good habit to switch the camera off before removing the battery in case it was mid-way through recording a file or performing an operation. During my tour of the controls though it's safe, but again I'd recommend switching it off first normally.
I'm from Paris and have just bought it ! I love it and this video too. Thanks for it !
yep - see our features page in the review...
Great review, I'll be buying the XSi as soon as I can find the model without the kit lens.
@posteri007 read the continuous shooting section in your manual...
PS - we've more details about this at the bottom of the features page on the review at the cameralabs . com website...
Thanks adrifernz, and thanks also for your support. If you ever need to compare prices, you can support us by using our price checking services at cameralabs . com. And please feel free to join our fourm if you have any Qs or tips!
Not sure which currency you're referring to, but click the link to the right of the video window above to see current pricing for the US and UK.
Check out the verdict page of our 1000D review at cameralabs . com to compare them...
Hi Gordon. Firstly, I would like to tell you that I am hooked onto your video reviews. Fantastic work! Keep it up. Secondly, I have been waiting for a review of the Pentax K200D for quite a few weeks now. Please coerce the company to give you a camera asap. I wish to purchase a DSLR in the near future, and the options i'm looking at are Nikon D60, Olympus E-510, Pentax K200D.
Thanks! Don't forget to check out the full review at cameralabs . com!
Wow! Watching this review in 2023 is like having a time machine!
Weirdly, I remember filming each one of these.
Have a look at the best buys section at cameralabs . com and also re-read the verdict pages of each review. Then you'll know the differences. then I'd recommend picking them up in person to see which looks and feels best to you. Feel free to discuss your options in the cameralabs forums...
Weeell, everything I can tell you is on the results pages of our 450D review where you'll see the exact differences in quality between these two cameras - and the verdict page which sums it all up! Feel free to ask on the Cameralabs forum though if you're still stuck afterwards!
I love your videos so much :) They gave me a lot of tips and tricks how to make awesome pictures and effects. I've been saving for about 4 Months and now I bought a 450D. I wouldve bought a later model but I'm in love with the 450D for some reason. :D
If you go to the lenses section at cameralabs . com you can view the entire ranges from both manufacturers and compare models and prices. Again I can't say any more personally, but feel free to ask in the 'buying a new camera' section in the Cameralabs forums.
Completely agree.... I got my 450D second hand from a friend and have enjoyed taking pictures with it. I have learned so much using it esp after using the Lumix FZ18 for 4 years. While I find it now a little more restrictive due to the ISO sensitivity and video ability, I find myself still wanting to use the 450D until something else better comes out.
I'd like to, but you may be waiting some time! It was hard enough to get hold of a K20D...
Hi Luke, there's lots of different lens bundles, so you'll need to be more specific and state excatly the model you're being offered... but either way, please post your question in the Canon section of the cameralabs forums and we can take it from there.
Canon doesn't use the shutter half-press to AF in Live View. It will only AF in Live Vire, regardless of the mode, when you press the Star button in the top right corner. There's a full guide in the manual.
Any lens can close down to f16 or f22. The important number is the smallest f-number, and that's written on the front of every lens. Go to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and you'll find the complete Canon lens range - that will tell you which lenses have, for example, f1.4. Have a look for the 24mm, 35mm and 50mm models...
Hey, no worries! It depends if you want or need the extra features of the 450D / XSi. I've compared them both in the verdict page of my 1000D / XS review at cameralabs . com...
All DSLRs have an optical viewfinder. I'm afraid I can't answer any more of your questions now - sorry, I have to work on more reviews.
i just bought one and i must admit that this video was very helpful. thank you very much!
Thanks for the well done review. I'm sold!
Yes it does - we have full details and dust results in our review at the cameralabs . com website...
It's absolutely fine! The 40D is a wonderful camera and with recent rebates from Canon, the prices have actually been quite close to the 450D / XSi. Just bear in mind it is a bigger and noticeably heavier camera, so if you want lightweight, go for the 450D / XSi.
Most comprehensive review on the net!
You can manually select exposures as long as 30 seconds, or for as long as you have the button pressed in 'Bulb' mode - this could be several minutes. This is the same for all DSLRs though.
Kudos! I am looking at buying my first dSLR and came across your videos. You do a great job at reviewing the budget dSLR's for what they are and not for what they aren't.
I figure you may roll your eyes at this kind of question but do you think someone like myself would be better off with the XSi or saving the extra cash and just picking up the XS? I am going to be buying one or the other and I just dont know if I would be missing out or buying more than I would need or use.
Nice review, thanks Gordon.
Good question - I'll try and find out, but I wouldn't be surprised if they can't, or won't do it on the 40D. One plus point is at least the lenses don't need a firmware update...
I just got this camera, got it used for 300$, but it's basically new in the box. I already have a Go Pro for video, so I really just want to take pictures with it and it seems to still be on par with current technology... Awesome video!
Hi, I'm afraid I don't know, but feel free to ask in the Canon section of the cameralabs forums - and let us know if it's only on long exposures or high ISOs...
No worries! I've compared them in the verdict page of my 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com!
I'm checking out those sites that you wrote down for me, I will review them with more detail later but they seem to be very useful and interesting, thanks a lot for the quick and useful information, I'l be checking your other videos in the future. So thanks I'm really looking forward on taking great picutres after dealing with crapy cameras for years and years :)
thanks gordon!! great review!! easy to understand the feature of 450d. great camera! now question: which one do you prefer (or recommend) personally, canon 450d or nikon d40 for dslr beginner as concern as picture quality goes. thanks for your time!
Could be a variety of things. Make sure the card has plenty of room on it. Make sure AF is set to single or even manual focus. Make sure highlight tone priority is disabled. Make sure the ISO is not too big. Make sure the quality is JPEG only, not RAW.
Yes! Check out our tutorials at dslrtips . com for advice on using a DSLR...
Hey Gordon, nice reviews u doin there! I just have a question, and that is what does the depth of field button exactely do?? Thats the only button i'd never understood before under these years, thank you for you're time!
Thanks! Don't forget to visit the full review at cameralabs . com - this is just a brief taster!
The 30D is a sei-pro camera, so is tougher, quicker with 5fps shooting, and has a PC sync flash port. If you shoot fast action or in damp conditions, you'll appreciate the build and speed. But the 450D / XSi has Live View, more pixels etc. Is the 40D out of your range? Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Yep, that's exactly the kind of thing you can do with it, and the images can also be recorded directly to your Mac's (or PC's) hard disk...
The mirror will still flip when you take the picture - is that what you mean? Either way, check out the design page of this review at cameralabs . com for a more detaile explanation...
Check the verdict page of the 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com to compare it against the 400D / XTi. And check out dslrtips . com for tutorials on using it!
Yes they are.
Hi Gordon- I love your reviews, they have helped me very much in deciding which camera to purchase. I am a total beginner when it comes to dSLR's, and am going to be buying a 450d. Along with the camera, I am considering purchasing a 55-250mm lens, and also a 50mm lens. Both canon brand, both $100 dollars on Amazon. I was wondering if you would recommend these lenses to someone just starting out in SLR photography, I would love to hear your advice.
Thanks for your time,
~Zach
I put it in Live View mode, but it's out of focus!
The focus button is that little button with a "*" above it??? When I press that it does nothing. Help!
Hi Marinell8228 , Yes the detector does turn the screen off , Iv'e just tested it in the pitch black of my conservatory.
Hope this helps.
I'm afraid I can't reveal what I'm currently testing, but if you regularly check cameralabs . com, you'll be the first to find out!
My 450d, when in Live Mode, doesn't autofocus at all, (lens switched to AF, and working in other scenarios); what should I do ?
I found it, I'm in love.
Gonna be buying this October 15th.
got my new Canon 450d last saturday and im hving a great time!! =)
Yes it's the one with the star on it - please check your manual.
Thanks! Have you also seen the full review of it at cameralabs . com ?
If you buy the Tamron lens with the Canon mount, then yes it will autofocus fine on this body.
hi gordon, your reviews are great! i'm deciding to choose between Xsi and D40. live view mode on both camera, but what's the difference? And does D40 has better noice control in low light situation? thanks
