    One thing about this camera is if you do something to the f/ and the shutter speed you don't see instant changes until you take the picture... few adjustments need to be made before you have the ideal picture compared to OM-D EM10. I guess this is good for people who is experienced in adjusting the shutter speed and f/. Also another advice is it's better not to trust the LCD screen on this camera... the pixel it shows is not what you will actually see on the computer, sometimes you might think you took a bad shot but its actually much better than you think if you viewed it on your PC. Don't trust the LCD on this CAMERA!!!! I will recommend mirror less camera like EM 10 its inexpansive and works quite well as a camera for beginners.

    Thank u for the tips, i just recently purchased a used XSI with 8000 clicks, and got a NIB EFS 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS II. I really don't know wtf i'm doing but videos like this do help and i appreciate the time u put in this to help other people. I do alot of field herping (i'm a reptile geek lol) and wondered if my mothers old canon lenses from the late 80's would work. I know she paid 1500 back then for some of the better lenses and thought it would be fun to try them out. What do u think?

    @Ralph Miller The XSI accepts SDHC cards so in theory. up to a 256gb if you want to blow $500. I didn't see any limitations reported googling. But really, 32 gig SDHCs are plenty large. There's the camp of not storing a years worth of photos on a card and having it go bad. So I'd rather have a few smaller cards than one massive expensive one. Yes, leave the green square! Start with AV mode. It's like auto mode only you set the f-stop or how blurry background is. Come check out my blog for help.

  • @DamianDodd
    @DamianDodd  11 років тому

    @shanethebarroomhero Thanks for watching! Grats on the XSI. Great budget starter Canon. Check out the FD to EOS adapters on Amazon. The ones with a glass element help with infinity focus. As long as they don't have fog or fungus inside, old film lenses are a great budget option for lenses.

  • @DamianDodd
    @DamianDodd  11 років тому

    @Ralph Miller Get a class 10 card. From there they have different Read/Write speeds. But that's for high burst and video. The cheap ones are like 14 meg/sec write speed. You want at least 30 meg/sec write for video, which the XSI doesn't shoot, but good to know if you upgrade.

      That's great Miguel. My wife is still using hers. Those two are good starter lenses, especially for outdoor photography. The 75-300 will struggle indoors, as it lets in less light at their max zoomed range. Enjoy and thanks for watching!

      You can only get better going up the Rebel line. This year I found a touch-screen T5i on ebay for $370, with a 18-55mm stm lens. The 450D shoots video but only tethered, so if mobile video is important you should upgrade.

    I picked up this camera with the 18-55 lens and the 55-250 lens plus a battery grip for 200 dollars! Its a great camera! What was the lens you showed at the start? The 48mm one?

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  10 років тому

      DandosStudios That's an excellent deal for the XSI, grip and lenses. My wife still uses this one. It's a light and solid camera for cheap. At the start I held up a Sigma 24mm f/2.8 FD (or film-era) lens. Typically $50-$100 on ebay plus you need a $40/$50 adapter. Either Nikon mount to EOS or Canon FD to EOS. It would be manual focus and aperture setting. Another great starter lens is the Canon 50mm f/1.8 at just over $100 new, $75 used.

      Richard. I suggest only buying a model that currently has a Magic Lantern firmware option. builds.magiclantern.fm/ That includes T1i-T5i. ML adds an awesome pile of features to Canon DSLRs including focus peaking and raw recording. Honestly, the T4i is the one I would get if you can afford it, because of the touch screen and auto focus. If you get an auto focus body with a kit lens, make sure it's an STM lens as those have silent auto focus.

    So i'm new to photography and while like everyone i would love nothing more than a brand new, high end camera to snapshot my life on the road ahead the reality is it would be stupid of me to start with something mega expensive. Therefore as of 2018 can you give a shortlist of maybe 2 or 3 cameras that would be worth picking up now and applicable lenses that can serve me well over the next couple of years and beyond until i progress and knowledge begins to grow? Thanks for any response! :D

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  6 років тому

      A few months ago I got a used Canon t5i with an 18-55mm STM (silent focus) lens for what we paid for this XSI years, about $425ish. Great camera with 1080p video and articulating screen. Look up Magic Lantern if video is your thing. I added that for free to the t5i to expand it's video capabilities. Lens wise you could get the thrifty 50mm 1.8f for about $100 new. Though on this camera 50mm = 85mm = the perfect fashion length if you have enough backup room. Plenty of film-era lenses out there to use via adapter. A used Sigma 24mm would be nice for this camera too. As you can tell I'm a fan of prime lenses. You really have to pay big money for a zoom lense that holds its aperture and sharpness through the zoom. Gluck thanks for watching

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  2 роки тому

      Sry for late reply just saw this, you can tell lens quality from f-stop and also from price. The kit lenses are usually f-3.5 to f5.6 in the zoom range, and the builds are plastic-y. The lower the f-stop the more light the lens lets in (nicer bokeh) and the higher the price goes. It really depends where you're shooting. A zoom with f3.5-f5.6 is ok outside. A zoom with f2.8 consistent through the zoom will be better inside (lets in more light). Primes are nice because you can get better/lower f-stop for an affordable price (like the f1.8 50mm) - if you want zoom on a prime use your feet to walk closer :) But ya if you're shooting your kids indoor sports all the way from the bleachers a 70-200 f2.8 IS and a 2x adapter is the best but $$$$

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  9 років тому

      I get a lot of flack about the fact that I mention the XSI doesn't shoot video. Officially, it shoots video - if you're tethered to a computer. Now, that isn't really practical. The T1i records 1080p video but at 20fps. 720p at 30fps. The t2i and above shoot 1080 at 30 and 24 fps. I use dpreview.com to get all the specs and reviews of cameras.
      Note: that B&H is selling the 60D body for $1000 less than what I paid just a few years ago. Great deal right now, www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/732047-REG/Canon_4460B003_EOS_60D_DSLR_Camera.html

    I want to get a dslr depth of field look to my videos, do you know a good cheap dslr for video? Is the canon you mentioned the cheapest of video capable dslrs?

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  10 років тому

      The XSI can't do video unless tethered to a PC. I'd look at a used T1i or T2i. Or a new/used T3i, T4i. All the used should be sub $500, so go for the best you can find. T4i starts touch screen and auto focus with video. Also look at the EOS M, micro 4/3rds for video, it's cheap new now because the M2 is coming out this year. The f/3.5-5.6 kit lenses are ok to start, but if you want very shallow DOF on the cheap look at the Canon 50mm f/1.8 or some sub f/2.8 offerings from Sigma or Tamron. For info, DPreview dot com and try out my blog linked in the notes.

    Is 175$ to much to pay for this camera?

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, do a search on ebay for completed listings of used XSIs, they are going for $60-100 with 18-55 kit lens.

    @Damian Dodd hey i im very new to this topic where can i find the lens that were around 50 dollars?... and why did i need an adaptor?

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  7 років тому

      @max you can find them on ebay..I showed FD lenses and then get a FD to EOS adapter. Need an adapter because it's a different mount. Make sure the old used lenses don't have fog/dust/fungus in them. You can also adapt Nikon film lenses with adapters.

    Hi, i just got this for my first dlsr. Can i use this for macro photography? My main subject is insects/bugs

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  3 роки тому

      Hello! You sure can. There are a few ways to do macro photography. The inexpensive not-as-good way is to use macro filters on the end of your lens, or extension tubes on the base. The two best ways are a: to get a dedicated macro lens like Canons 100mm f2.8 macro or the king (for bugs) is Canon's 65mm 1-5x macro lens (expensive). There are also lenses with bellows to adjust macro. Or b: (cheapest) is get a reversal ring and mount your lens backwards on your camera. You can even mount two lenses and have one be reversed for even greater closeups. Doing this really robs your lenses of light so you'll need a good light source(s) for indoor photos. Canon has flashes specifically for macro. A lot of the bug photographers do focus stacking. They take many shots focusing through the bugs face and stack the finals into one image. A sturdy tripod, added macro rails, and a shutter release cable will help you make fine adjustments without shake. Here's an article that will help: digital-photography-school.com/reverse-lens-macro-close-up-photography-lesson-3/

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  10 років тому

      DoctorMetal I'm told you can, but only if you tether the XSI to your computer to record. If you're looking for an inexpensive Canon to shoot video, go for the T2i or T3i (on up to what you can afford). At t4i you start to get into autofocus video which can be helpful if you're shooting subjects moving toward and away from you. And there are comparable Nikon cameras, but I'm a Canon guy. Thanks for watching!

    • @8DFabian

      Damian Dodd yeah I just got it like last week! I'm trying to figure out how to take sports photos and basically just learn the basics to adjusting to day and night time pics! But it's super complicated and takes a lot of time.
      Do you have a video that explains what mode to use in certain situations?

    • @DamianDodd
      @DamianDodd  7 років тому +1

      For sports turn the dial to the fast running guy icon, it will make a fast shutter speed a priority to capture the action. I don't have a video like that, but to truly understand the camera, search YT for "Photography Triangle" or the relationship between shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Canon's auto settings work most of the time but there are times when you have to understand what they are doing in order to make adjustments. If going full auto use P instead of Green Square... P lets you decide flash or no flash, let's you tweak the settings if need be.
