  • Pro racer, driving coach and Caterham specialist Darren Burke lapped the 3.7 mile Silverstone GP circuit in 2.09.97 on a very cold day at the end of November. Tyres were road legal Kumho Ecsta V70.
We believe this is the fastest ever lap of Silverstone GP by a Caterham 7. If you know any different get in touch.
For the fastest Caterham 7 ever contact Boss Racing.
To learn how to drive it contact Darren Burke.

Have to say, now I actually own a very highly optioned CSR 260, I’d like to point out to other viewers that pretty much all you hear when driving at full attack without a windscreen is the wind buffeting. I absolutely love the development work on this car. Bravo!

thanks it won outright at Castle Combe in July and was on pole at Donington Park so we have definitely made progress since this video. We have faster tyres than the Kumho Ecsta used at Silverstone - the new Avon ZZR 'extreme' which is typically 2 secs quicker around most circuits. I would expect a pro driver to be 2.07 on a fresh set, maybe even quicker. Biggest single drop in laptime came from a day spent with a pro driver working on set-up and corner speed. On some tracks we are at the point where more power would not result in a lower laptime. Donington is a good example where the car can't contain full throttle in the Craner or Schwanz Curves where a lower powered car would be flat. However the option exists for somewhere like Spa to work the supercharger harder for even more straight line speed.

Left foot braking is not for the squeamish, but Darren’s demonstration of left hoof trail braking is a masterclass. Only a few cars give you the opportunity to explore this level of control and balance, and most Caterhams don’t come with the luxury of clutchless gear changes. For a car with no aerodynamics and zero downforce, it’s a winner.

It wasn't running traction control or ABS either. The ecu can do TC but it's a job to set it up. Launch control would be very useful, very tricky to launch on cold tyres when the race is a standing start. I normally make back a few places on the run to turn 1!

It was 4 degrees C that day, very cold. There was ice in places early on. Good for engine power and I was impressed that the Kumhos managed to get some heat in them. We are now racing on an updated Avon ZZR "888" tyre which is considerably faster, while it lasts! It could easily knock another 2 seconds off that time. Hope to find out in 2021!

Quite a bit quicker than when that video was taken now too. I would fully expect the same pro driver to be in the 2.07s on the faster Avon ZZR 'extreme' tyres we use now. Still treaded but very close to slick laptime at their best. Lots of people told me I was mad to take that car on and that it would never work so it's satisfying to see it getting better each season. I keep telling Boss Racing that they should do a limited run of road cars with this engine. They have already done one road car with something similar and the owner is very happy!

Nice driving, and many thanks for showing the pedal work. I learned a few things today.

@@DrPittenstein A Seven 275S (the SV chassis) with the regular Ford Sigma engine. I know, not exactly track material compared to this one, but still a lot to get used to when compared to "normal" cars. For me, it's the most I can safely handle.

Tin Whistle I’m not sure how relevant Darrens lap is to any other Seven but he’s an outstanding driving coach and would help you get the most out of your car for sure.

Just wondering about the pedals setup it's quite tight people saying, is it like an old Mini or tighter, how much room do you have on the side if you cut away the side of the floor plan is there room to move to the left on a right-hand driveor, or is it buttered up to the chassis? I would prefer to have the acceleration on the left braking with my right foot I think it's better well for me better controller my right foot is my dominant side maybe left-handed maybe not so maybe something to consider.
How you getting that figure at the end 2,19 fastest Caterham 420 ? that's not the case there's a 620 got to be quicker.

If you cut away the floor on the left side of the pedal box, your foot will be up against the exhaust. Fireproof shoes?

Pedals are great but require race boots or very slim driving shoes. You can set them up however you like. If you see a shot of a Caterham with bonnet off you can see the pedal box clearly. Fastest factory Caterham race series is the 420R. They don't race the 620R but anyone is welcome to post a lap, I'd like to see what a 620 could do. Not many owners really push them on track though.
