Yes, sir it is! Nobody ever talks about the top thumb either, to many high handicappers leave the top thumb pointed down the shaft, instead of rolling it over more on top of your right-hand pointer finger (for a right-hand golfer). It kills some power IMO.
IVE BEEN TO THE RANGE TWICE TODAY BECUASE OF THIS, I WAS HITTING EVERYTHING STRAIGHT LEFT BECAUSE FOR THE LIFE OF ME I COULDNT STOP CLOSING THE FACE COZ OF MY GRIP, I'VE USED THIS TECHNIQUE AND OUT OF 200 BALLS IVE PROBABLY HIT 2 STRAIGHTLEFT. I'M AMAZED THANKS Alex!!
I thought I had a neutral grip but I just realized that I was destroying it by forcing my right pinky (I'm right-handed) between the first two fingers of my left hand. This then moved my right hand into a much stronger position under the club and causing lots of nasty hooks and blocked shots. Now I make sure my right hand stays square, which means my right pinky must ride on top of the first finger of my left hand. It's amazing what a difference such a small change can make but the club does feel more secure and easier to control and I'm not having to fight it to keep it square, or struggle to keep my right arm from taking over the downswing.
Great tips and video. My grip gradually gets stronger without me noticing until hooks start appearing. This is a great check to keep that from happening. Thank you!
You just confirmed what I was trying to do today. I usually have a strong grip, especially with my driver and I decided today to leave the left hand strong but just rotate my right hand slightly more to the right like you showed with the line on the thumb. And surprisingly I hit more controlled shots in the direction I wanted to. Thanks for discussing the right hand grip because very few instructors do.
Howdy Alex, I am a 20+ handicapper, shoot left and sliced the ball most times. Watched a you tube video, which I now forget which one, but the grip explained on that video stopped my slice right away. In that lesson, they said that when you set your club ready, look down and you should be able to see two knuckles on the upper hand. I tried it and wow, worked every time. I believe with that top hand position, you lower hand grip will fall in place as you describe... Great videos, keepem' coming.
You must have read my mind! I was thinking about this issue on the course last week. Now I have a definitive answer! Thank you Alex. These are really appreciated!
Good “back to basics” tip. The reason that grip orientation is ideal relates to the range of rotation of the ulna and radius bones in the forearms. The best symmetrical action in the backswing and downswing occurs when both forearms start near the middle of the range of rotation as illustrated here because the strength of the wrists control when their range of extension will max out and force the elbow of the same arm to fold, which guides the club head path.
This saved me. I am a pretty avg golfer, try to break 89. But all of a sudden developed this awful pushy slice. Started shooting in the 100s and couldn't figure it out. Almost sold everything and called it quits. I found this video randomly when looking for some advice on a lesson i got about my grip. This instantly got me back and even shot my personal best of 85. Thank you.
Hi Alex Tnx very much for this good video what helps me enormously is ensuring that the golf grip is in the fingers of the right hand that way you can feel how much control you to cock the wrists and swing the club it sort of adds finesse to the swing
Finally, someone talks about the trail hand grip! Thank you Mr. Elliot. I've been researching this forever and you, as usual makes it a simple fix. Thank you
Hi Alex. This is what I needed to know and to confirm that my right hand is on my grip correctly cos I always believe that gripping the club correctly would help me strike the ball better and also my swing. Thanks for sharing your wonderful clip!
Good tip Alex !! Recently found that swinging with the "feeling" that your lead hand is just "along for the ride" and having the trail hand more present helps prevents slices, or could even create hooks. (Kind of like a hockey slapshot) Gained 15-20 yards just using more of my trail hand pushing rather than having the lead hand pull the club. (If that makes sense) 🙌🏼
I discovered exactly the same thing! The feeling I have is that the right hand catches up with the left and then passes it. It's not a flip (I think/hope). I am not scooping the ball high into the air.. At some stage in the downswing the left wrist has to bend back so that there is a fulcrum effect that swivels the grip. What I mean is that before impact the bottom of the grip points to the right and the top (above the hands) to the left, but after the swivel happens the bottom has turned towards the target and the top is pointing right. In addition, I have to keep the lead arm super soft (but still straight) to prevent it from dominating the action.
@Stefan Coetzee at some point, you have to "flip" or "turnover" the clubhead to complete the follow through. Or the golf swing will look and feel really awkward and you won't "complete" the swing and rather end it at hip height instead. You're right ✅️
This was perfect! I was getting too much draw on every drive. Nothing to really complain about when aiming right all the time, but this fixed it! Just a slightly weaker right hand, and I'm crushing it straight with just a baby draw. Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Alex Thanks again about this tip and may you talk about the left hand again for a right player to combine both in the best way? Thanks in advance! Wil
I tinkered around with my grip forever. I have found that you need to also address wrist position here at the top of the backswing to get the full picture. I play with a natural bowing vs cupped wrists at the top. If you bow your wrists at the top that cancel out the weak grip. I have found more power from bowed wrists weaker/neutral grip combo than anything else. Just throwing it out there for someone else to to give it a shot.
I recently figured this out when doing practice swings in my house. Have not been able to get rid of an annoying slice even after strengthening my lead hand grip. Helped but not completely fixed. When I adjust my trail hand while holding my club at the bottom of a swing, I watch my driver face go from open to closed. Now I need to go try it out.
Just had surgery on the palm of my right, non glove hand and am back on course after 10 days to see if I can still play golf. I had to adjust my grip to protect the palm of my right hand a bit then started a massive slice. Irons are fine. So this is exactly what I need today.
Hey Alex, can you show a video showing a trigger move at the start of the backswing? Like Jordan, Hogan, and Xander. Thanks and keep the swing tips coming!!!
Yup, guilty of too strong a grip with the right hand here, I have a range lesson this week, I'm going to really work at going more neutral. When I've tried it before, everything goes to pot, not just hitting to the left. Thanks for the video Alex.
i fixed my horrible slice a month ago with a stronger grip, and now im suffering from a horrible hook like you showed by having your trail hand under the grip. this video is what i need and is near perfect timing
Glad you covered this as I've adjusted my grip slightly to draw or create a fade. I'm a lefty playing right handed. Early season I was hooking my Driver badly with a weak grip, so I was really messed up as my swing path was very inside out and hands are active. I changed to neutral grip and got my backswing more feeling straight back and by Fall was hitting the Driver straight and sometimes with slight draw. Question: I get my Driver going straight, but then when I use 3 wood I get nasty hook. Is that because 3 wood is shorter club? Help on why that happens would be great.
What I’ve done is figured out what position do my hands naturally want to be in when the clubhead strikes the ball, and then just grip it that way with a squared up clubface at setup so that the clubhead comes through exactly that way too on the downswing. Everyone is going to be a little different just based on their body and natural swing mechanics. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Just do what works and what is comfortable. What is good for one person might not be good for another.
That was helpful! Another suggestion would be to demonstrate the same dynamics for the non-glove hand when you have either a weak or strong glove hand.
Love your channel Alex, it's helped me lose 3 shots off my 11 handicap. I really struggle with severe downhill and uphill lie greenside chips.. A video on those horrible chips would be awesome! Cheers
Though obvious, it occurred to me that the relationship between club length & stance width are key. I may be using too wide a stance as clubs may be too small for me. Before I go for a fitting, what is the optimal stance width. Don’t tell me it’s individual, though it may be. I must be a stance width that optimizes balance, power and control. Thanks, John
Good tip. Easy to check on each swing. Can you do more short game stuff as it's really frustrating getting to just off the green in 2 and walking away with a bogey or double bogey.
in response to your question about the sharpie lines on your thumb, I would think the rules would deem that a training aid and not be allowed in competitions ....
I read "ben hogan's five lessons". In it he says that in setup, your trail hands palm should face directly to the target. This was honestly really uncomfortable and caused me to drastically slice the ball.. i tweaked the angle of my hand till i found a position that worked for me. Coincidentally, the ideal position was exactly where this video says it is. Number one biggest cure to my slice. This needs to be talked about more
I've also read 5 lessons, Hogan gripped it pretty weak based on the pictures. It makes sense that he wanted to eliminate a hook from his game and make it nearly impossible but I think for most golfers I know that left thumb facing almost straight down the grip would be a killer.
Found a hidden gem for yiu Alex. Burnham and berrow. But not the championship course. There is a 9 hole double tee channel course it is an absolute gem of a course
My right hand starts slipping under without me realising and I start shanking and all kinds of issues.. if I get the right hand more on top and much more neutral, it instantly cures it and I can pretty much hit as hard as I like. I am curious about why??
Hi Alex, I know you can't put pen marks on you glove to highlight your knuckles so I suspect the same would apply to alignment aids on the non gloved hand.
Unfortunately under the new rule changes for 2023, if you are found to have drawn 3 lines on your non glove hand in tournament play: you are to have two penalty strokes added to your score for every hole you have already played. Oh and you also have to have your thumb cut off immediately in order to complete your round. Hope that helps.
@@susanhood3346 Rule4.3 a: Allowed and Prohibited uses of equipment. Also, your thumb MUST be cut off by a golf UA-camr using one of those golf ball cutters all the golf UA-camrs use. Golf UA-camrs are everywhere, so there should be no delay in finishing your thumb-less round.

Great video, just checked rules 4:3 a 5 :( , I suppose a tattoo is a bit extreme. While trying this out, it is the first time I have ever felt hands in opposing directions like wringing out a towel.
Alex! I’ve messaged you many times with results from your tips and you’re amazing. First part of this last year I had some of my most consistent low rounds and all of a sudden I couldn’t hit anything straight. Another channel had similar advice to this video and another regarding placement of the ball. My game had gotten so unpredictable that I lost all confidence and we know how that goes. What I have noticed for me is 90% of the time, it’s something as “small” as my grip! I am a 10 handicap with multiple sub 80 rounds but multiple above 90 as well. Frustrating! After some grip tweaking, I noticed my “terrible” swings still kept me in bounds even if I missed the good part of the face…..and now winter is coming. Smh Keep doing what you do! I would love to spend a week over there having you look over my game. I swear I’d go to a 5 in no time!
So many poor shots are the result of poor setups, this being another example. So easy to drift away from basic fundamentals. Thanks for reminding all of us to check our fundamentals! Perhaps more videos on how to check our setups?
why is it that your arms increase separation in the takeaway. then reduce separation towards the top of your backswing; and, continue to reduce separation in the start of your downswing. might be worth doing a video on that.
I see a lot of kids on the range with their right hand in an ultra-strong position (sometimes with their thumb pushing the club). It feels good to them. And they get bad advice from their buddies. They want to hit 300-yard drives. So they wail on the ball with that grip. They don't want to hear about it either. So they are doomed to hit bad shots for years and years.
I have watched videos,i have so much stuff in my head.. On the driving range,i didnt know what to do. I have no tempo, every swing is different. Every grip is different, ive lost my swing...
Well next year, (1 month) you can even put tees in or a club on the ground to align if you like so a line on your thumb, who cares🤷🏻♂️lol. Even get your 50" driver out if you like! Cheers, Mick 🇦🇺🎯🏌️♂️

wow how easy was that you make it look easy alex
Great video as always. For some reason I can’t hit the center of the club face consistently. Do you have any good winter drills for home.

I just did this on course today. Hit straight. Hardly any draw. Awesome!

Another nice tip Alex. Can I ask if this is true for other clubs as well (Irons, Hybrids, Woods)?
Im having a hard time this week. as far as the grip is the grip more in you fingers or palms??
It makes sense, will use this week when I play. Great video & tip Alex!
Let me know how you get on with this

Have you done a video on ball positions with different irons?
