Great video sir, I’ve had both drones and they both have pro’s and con’s, the phantom 3 standard was my first drone as well. I tried to fly it indoors unbeknownst that Atti mode caused me to crash violently into the wall and I have a pretty gnarly scar on my hand from the props hitting it. Luckily I’ll say it didn’t get damaged I flew it awhile before I upgraded to a newer Phantom. I am quite amazed by the camera and range of the Mini. You’re right about the wind it really struggles I was making a video today flying in sport mode against the wind and could barely eek out 6-8 MPH I kid you not! That being said I’d still go with the Mini because if it’s portability and features but the P3S is still a great drone even today. Keep up the good work. The clip where the phantom plummeted and hits the ground was hilarious lol so much for the barometer huh? Here lately my Phantom 4 advance has taken a backseat to the amazing Mini!
Man, I totally forgot to mention that flying the Mini indoors is much more possible with the downwards facing sensors. I just, as likely many others, don’t typically fly inside so I didn’t think of that. I am with you with putting aside my more expensive drone (in my case, the Mavic Pro Platinum) in favor for the little Mini. I would say it’s biggest problem is wind as well, but other than that it’s pretty great and when flying it I honestly forget sometimes how inexpensive it was (in comparison to other drones in the DJI lineup)

@9:48.. You said that there is no easy way to connect an iPad? They literally sell tons of iPad holders that slide where your phone goes in the controller and then it has a arm that connects to the iPad??? So easy to connect...
No VPS on the P3S - The later introduced P3SE (as well as a few other P3 variants) had VPS added and it was much more stable in a hover, almost as good as the MM.

Actually you can shot videos with 1080p 60fps with P3S. This option was available on DJI Go app in previous revisions but was deleted due to camera overheating concerns. You can enable 1080p 60fps with 3rd party app, Litchi on android devices. After that you can come back to DJI Go app and have 1080p60 functionality as long as you don’t choose otherwise. I found it worth noting in this comparison. Cheers, a great video! :)
I still go with the Phantom3 standard because it's safer to fly, I took mine to many vacations and it handles perfect even on a very windy day when the mini it's way too risky to fly high up over the ocean... its 400$ gone very fast lol
To anyone who catches this comment, the Mavic Mini is really the way to go, especially if you get the fly more combo. Both are great drones, but you get more value and portability out of the mini. It can be affected in heavy wind (Still no issues going 25-29 mph in normal winds), but you should avoid that if possible. Not to mention, the mini is 4 years newer. Naturally it benefits from more development. The downward sensors are a BIG plus to avoid mishaps and damage to your drone clearly shown at 6:05 and 10:13 lol. If you don't want something as small as a mini, save up a little more for a mavic pro or something similar, dont buy a drone from 2015.
Great video. I've had both of these drones but recently sadly parted with the P3S since it was only gathering dust. It just couldn't compete on portability, but you did skip over a huge advantage that it did have. It works with the litchi app allowing for programmed intelligent flight modes that are really powerful, including sending the drone on programmed paths well beyond the range of the controller. I'm not sure if this is within legal regulations and it is nerve racking watching your drone disappear from view and waiting for it to hopefully return. I never had a problem with it and it's definitely worth taking I go account since as yet, the mavic mini has no support for litchi.
Peter, thanks for the comment! I definitely didn’t even think of third party options here. I was going more from a vanilla drone experience to another here though, but if I was taking into account third party advantages, I definitely would have made sure to include that. I haven’t personally used the Litchi app myself before, but I’m sure the functionality or similar there to it will eventually come out for the MM!

I think the P3 is a lot more drone than the mini ... I have the 2 ... but people are always undecided in which to invest .... and the P3 adv. worth it for its cost and quality ... I think your explanation is good ... yes it is worth it

As always, another great upload! Very comprehensive and easy to follow. I have both the p3s and mini. The Standard was purchased new when it first came out. Other than range extender, no other mods. It still flies great, and makes beautiful video. The Mini is everything you said. So easy to fly, but a little sketchy in strong winds. A word of caution there. They are so light it's harder to fly upwind. Quite a few have done a flyaway. Also, if you don't mind, do you have any career plans in mind? You are a fine educator. Greetings from Alaska. I just sold my phantom standard ….just about the pick up my mavic air fly more combo. In GPS mode the wind doesn’t Seem to effect mine at all. I like the idea of it being so small and just throw it in your pocket and away you go 👍👍👍
I am ashamed to say this, but the Phantom 3 was my first drone and I returned it because I was sure I would crash and destroy it and be out $500. Didn't have a drone for years, then just got the mini. I really wish I had kept the Phantom now and stayed in the hobby!

I started off flying small drones from Amazon and random big box stores. To be able to fly a dji 3 professional. I love having a drone on the large side.
Nice video! I have the P3S right now and I love it it's just so big and the book bag I have for it is huge. So to carry around cameras and the drone it's an event. Would be nice to have the little Mavic and everything in 1 bag.
Oh I remember how many options there were when DJI was releasing drone after drone between 2016-2018... I started with a P3 Advanced and then settled and still use a Phantom 4 Pro +... I love the phantoms but it would be nice just to keep the Mavic on hand, it's easy enough to take even if you have no droning planned.
I just flew my mini in the city with a bunch of warehouses and power lines and got only 400 meters range before losing the signal. The drone returned home once the signal was lost. Probably only 400m because of a lot of interference. You might get 2-3 km in the mountains I think...

Important for some people and it caught me out. The mavic mini only works on 64 bit OS devices, the older P3 can work on 32 bit devices. I've got an Nvidia Shield tablet that I was looking forward to using on my mini, but as it's only 32 bit OS, I can't use it
Thank you Dominic! This is the mic that I used: Best Budget Dual Lav Microphone Kit? || Comica CVM-WM100 PLUS Review ua-cam.com/video/RmFSDQ7jAyU/v-deo.html. It cut out the noise simply because that type of mic (lavalier) is simply made to do that. It’s omnidirectional, but only for very close distance. I 10/10 recommend the system! It’s worked great for me other than recently when a battery died I didn’t know it until after the fact since I’m a one-man-band when it comes to making these videos. Hope this helps!

I also bought a Mavic Mini 2 months ago. The range ist not the best. My max distance was 2km. The Fototage is very good and its " Mini" Good for travelling
I think it would definitely change up how much you used drones if you had :). I use my Mini more than I have any other drone before just due to its ease of taking anywhere and how well it functions!

Thank you very much for this video. Prime days has the Maverick mini package at the 399 price point. Very attractive! I have a specific question about the phone interface. The original DJI software for the Phantom 3 has become buggy. DJI doesn't seem to want to put any more time and money into fixing the issue because they want to sell new drones. There have been plenty of times that I have had no video feed trying to fly my Phantom 3. I have to connect and then disconnect a few times before I'll get the feed. Other times I win the lottery and it works right away. Does the Maverick mini use the same DJI app for Android? Or is it something entirely different since you're physically plugged into your phone? The phantom 3 can be used as a regular camera 📷 meaning. It doesn't have to be in fly mode for you to be able to use the gimbal aspect of it to shoot videos by just holding it and walking with it.
Great comparison but I would have given it a draw in regards to the field of view. FoV preference is an individual thing and personally I would like to see a FoV closer to 40mm.
If you fly in any sort of significant wind you might want to hang ono the P3S if you still got one just incase. I have to be very selective on the days I chose to operate my MM. Of course this is dependent where you regularly fly but the larger drones do give you more opportunity to operate them.
Bob Brown I have the Phantom 3 and I still have to select the days I use it. I fly I. Rural areas so the loss in signal kills it for me. I have crashed it due to this very same issue. So for me the Mavic Mini would solve that problem.
They only shoot horizontally. You can change the aspect ratio between 16:9 & 3:2 (the sensors native ratio), but no vertical aspect ratios. I don’t know of any DJI drones that are capable of doing that actually. If you find any, let me know!!

@@carsonmtech kinda. The mavic's gimbal doesn't yaw (from left to right) . So it's more of a 2 axis with yaw being comphensated through digitial stablization
I'm sure there are a lot of people who tried to fly the phantom 3 standard in their house. I did and it went right into a wall. I got a pretty big scar on my arm from trying to catch it.
I have to agree that the Phantom 3 Standard is definitely a tank. I’ve crashed mine a couple times before when I was younger as well and it still flies to this day! The Mini cannot really carry any weight. If you put much on it, it’ll go into what is called “Payload Mode” which will restrict the flight to only about 100ft up and 200ft out. Super annoying. Not sure how well it could deal with a fishing line + anchor.
Thanks for the video, I’ve actually been undecided on whether to get a second hand phantom3 or mavic mini. The idea is to use it for real estate videos. Won’t like still undecided but looks like the mavic mini has the upper hand
I definitely like the phantom 3 standard but the portability of the mavic mini would be the tie breaker if I had to buy one or the other. But I already have the phantom 3 so oh well. And mine has that issue where it just drops from the sky as well usually with higher winds. Just decides to give up lol, this is why I dont fly over roads or people with it but really it only does it as soon as I take off so I know something is wrong.
Hmmm, as far as I know, it cannot, and I’ve checked all over the app for the setting! If you end up finding those guides again, shoot them my way, because I’d love to know how!
Carson thanks as always for this video, i’ve got exactly the same set up as p3s n purchased MM only a month ago. i must say the footage colours on the p3s is a lot better then the MM but for sheer flying experience i get a lot of interference with p3s compared with mm. for me i love both, for quick flights n footage i go the mm but for beach landscape footage i go p3s for the colours n the abilities to challenge the wind. thanks for the effort u put into ur vids i’ve always referred to them over the years like many viewers have n wish u all the best in ur studies. p.s are u still doing ur pilot lic ??

Sir, please help! I got used P3S drone as a gift. After couple of flights using DJI GO app all camera related buttons vanished from the display! Thus, no pictures or videos can be taken. I’m 73. Please help!
The mavic mini unfortunately doesn't have follow me but the phantom 3 does , the phantom 3 can also adapt a go pro . I think it does depend on what you want to do but for photos i say phantom 3 but again it is discontinued
I had a mini 2 and it disconnected and haven't found it and my cousin is giving me his phantom 3 for $100...they seem to be great but the phantom3 is going to lift more and have a 1080p camera instead of 4K and the mini will be more portable.

At 6:05 the phantom didn’t actually do that. That clip was from when he was landing it at 10:13. You can tell the clip is edited in at 6:05.

There is now a iPad/tablet adapter for the magic mini. It goes in right between the phone holder and has an adapter for the tablet.

It cut out the noise simply because that type of mic (lavalier) is simply made to do that. It’s omnidirectional, but only for very close distance. I 10/10 recommend the system! It’s worked great for me other than recently when a battery died I didn’t know it until after the fact since I’m a one-man-band when it comes to making these videos. Hope this helps!

The Phantom 3 STANDARD does not have any form of obstacle avoidance, however, higher up models do.

Thank you very much for this video. Prime days has the Maverick mini package at the 399 price point. Very attractive! I have a specific question about the phone interface. The original DJI software for the Phantom 3 has become buggy. DJI doesn't seem to want to put any more time and money into fixing the issue because they want to sell new drones. There have been plenty of times that I have had no video feed trying to fly my Phantom 3. I have to connect and then disconnect a few times before I'll get the feed. Other times I win the lottery and it works right away. Does the Maverick mini use the same DJI app for Android? Or is it something entirely different since you're physically plugged into your phone? The phantom 3 can be used as a regular camera 📷 meaning. It doesn't have to be in fly mode for you to be able to use the gimbal aspect of it to shoot videos by just holding it and walking with it.

Yes! It works even better, imo since the drone is even smaller and can fit in one hand. I’ve done it a few times before, it works great!

Great comparison but I would have given it a draw in regards to the field of view. FoV preference is an individual thing and personally I would like to see a FoV closer to 40mm.
Been thinking of getting a p3 just to beat around to save my mini. Not thinking it is really worth it now. Guess just save for the ma2.
If you fly in any sort of significant wind you might want to hang ono the P3S if you still got one just incase. I have to be very selective on the days I chose to operate my MM. Of course this is dependent where you regularly fly but the larger drones do give you more opportunity to operate them.
Bob Brown I have the Phantom 3 and I still have to select the days I use it. I fly I. Rural areas so the loss in signal kills it for me. I have crashed it due to this very same issue. So for me the Mavic Mini would solve that problem.

They only shoot horizontally. You can change the aspect ratio between 16:9 & 3:2 (the sensors native ratio), but no vertical aspect ratios. I don’t know of any DJI drones that are capable of doing that actually. If you find any, let me know!!

@@carsonmtech kinda. The mavic's gimbal doesn't yaw (from left to right) . So it's more of a 2 axis with yaw being comphensated through digitial stablization

Hey, can you make a video on how to go from CE mode to FCC mode. I live in Europe and my Phantom 3 Standard goes about 300m from me and loses signal.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who tried to fly the phantom 3 standard in their house. I did and it went right into a wall. I got a pretty big scar on my arm from trying to catch it.
got my p3s for $200 i crashed it 6 times and it still flys good . things a tank . i use it for fishing . how much weight can that mini carry ?
I have to agree that the Phantom 3 Standard is definitely a tank. I’ve crashed mine a couple times before when I was younger as well and it still flies to this day! The Mini cannot really carry any weight. If you put much on it, it’ll go into what is called “Payload Mode” which will restrict the flight to only about 100ft up and 200ft out. Super annoying. Not sure how well it could deal with a fishing line + anchor.

I definitely like the phantom 3 standard but the portability of the mavic mini would be the tie breaker if I had to buy one or the other. But I already have the phantom 3 so oh well. And mine has that issue where it just drops from the sky as well usually with higher winds. Just decides to give up lol, this is why I dont fly over roads or people with it but really it only does it as soon as I take off so I know something is wrong.
I thought the mavic could shoot RAWs? Pretty sure I've seen a few guides on how to make it save as raw

Carson thanks as always for this video, i’ve got exactly the same set up as p3s n purchased MM only a month ago. i must say the footage colours on the p3s is a lot better then the MM but for sheer flying experience i get a lot of interference with p3s compared with mm. for me i love both, for quick flights n footage i go the mm but for beach landscape footage i go p3s for the colours n the abilities to challenge the wind. thanks for the effort u put into ur vids i’ve always referred to them over the years like many viewers have n wish u all the best in ur studies. p.s are u still doing ur pilot lic ??

The mavic mini unfortunately doesn't have follow me but the phantom 3 does , the phantom 3 can also adapt a go pro . I think it does depend on what you want to do but for photos i say phantom 3 but again it is discontinued

With the mavic mini you won’t have 90 min flight time because the drone will have to cool down before using again. Great Video!!!
I had a mini 2 and it disconnected and haven't found it and my cousin is giving me his phantom 3 for $100...they seem to be great but the phantom3 is going to lift more and have a 1080p camera instead of 4K and the mini will be more portable.
At the very least in heavy winds and in sports mode which would be the most daring of the battery I still get at least 12 minutes
