Orchids with brown roots - Not always root rot!

  • Today we talk about brown roots on orchid, either patches, ether stains, what do they all mean? Are all a sign of root rot?
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
    There are a few cases in which orchids can have brown patches on their roots, or even get completely brown roots!
    1. Natural coloration, such as in the cases of slipper orchids, Maxillarias and others. Phalaenopsis typically have silver roots.
    2. Tannin staining from bark chips or coconut husk. Coconut does stain the roots more than any other media, in my experience.
    3. Salt accumulations which damage the roots. They can come from hard water, over fertilization, no flushing and so on. Here is how I like to flush out the salts from my orchid pots • How and why I flush my...
    4. Root rot, which can be caused by compacted and suffocating media, damaged roots and other ailments. They look the same, but the cause can greatly vary.

    Thank you so much for this video! My orchid roots have brown patches, but otherwise seem healthy, so I knew they have not died. However, I couldn't find any other explanation for partially brown roots. Now I know that salt burn is the culprit. I have been watering my orchid from the tap and fertilizing it frequently, so I will try fertilizing less and watering it with distilled/rain water to see if they improve. Thanks again! :)

    Is there something you can do about salts/calcium deposits on phal roots or the velamen is compromised forever? Thanks!

    Hello MissOrchidGirl. I have a small collection of "phal's" donated by guests to the school where I work. A few of the plants have some pretty obvious root problems. I appreciate this video as I was wondering how to address the problem. This post provides some different approaches that I can follow. Thank you.

    Hi. I would like some advice on my Dendrobium Nobile please!! I bought it about 4 years ago, it was potted in soil and grew so much I re-potted it in soil in a larger pot. Again it was doing great and grew plenty of shoots however I decided to post some questions on a plant forum and a US 'professor' advised me to immediately take it out of the soil as it would suffocate the roots and die..I did just that and repotted it in 'dendrobium medium' bouught online and it immediately developed stem rot and it is not looking very sick..I cut off and disinfected the sick shoots. I cut off most of the roots as they had all rotten...now is has 4 healthy stalks and only 3 leaves...two without any. I have placed it in Sphagnum moss following your ICU advice and noticed it is growing a small keiki from the bottom. Can the leafless shoots grow back leaves? How long does it take for new roots to appear on the mature shoots?

    I just purchased 2 phalaenopsis orchids from Target. The roots are a pretty green but some of them have small brown/black spots on them. Wondering if I should be concerned? Also the one orchids flowers look wilty ever since I've brought it home. Normally in the past only 1 or 2 flowers wilt at a time, not all. Just looking for some guidance!

      Thsi comment is V old but just in case other people see it, orchids wilting a lightly and dropping buds and flowers right after you buy them is actually normal. Your house probably has different humidity and light conditions than the store, so the plant initially freaks out. It'll recover

    Hello, Danny. Thanks for the very informative channel fir orchid growing! I am now starting to take care for obe oncidium Colmanara painter tropic jungle orchid and she is in great risk. The entire root sistem was suffocated in the media, it was rotting and all 8 pseudobulbs are veru very shrivled. I separated one smaller pseudobulb with a new growth, the bigger part doesn't seem to have any healthy roots. This ia my first rescue orchid and I wish it will be rescued. Thank you for the help. Hi Miss Orchid girl! I have Phalaenopsis orchid with new blooms. Roots are healthy looking at top but at bottom starting to look brown at the base.
    I love my orchid. Maybe I should repot it. I am using Organic orchid mix. The blooms are beautiful. I got so excited when I had 3 buds ~ then blooms.
    However these roots bother me. I looked at your You Tube videos trying to find out what is wrong. Not clear. Thank you I enjoy your videos. Very helpful!

    So i have one phalaenopsis orchid that grew a 5-7cm long stem without any buds and just a keiki coming directly from the tip. The keiki is now about the same size as the mother plant, is healty, has roots etc. Should it be removed or should I let it be?
    +
    Can orchids have a happy life without any fertilisers? I've had all of my orchids for 3-4 years and all seem to be doing good with normal tap water without anything added but I still feel kinda bad- (all of them ale phalaenopsis orchids)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому

      Hi, keikis can be removed, or left on if the mother plant doesn't show signs of stress. Fertilizers contain nutrients that all plants need to florish, like any living thing they need to feed too. Orchids have slow growth and deficiencies are slow to appear too. Fewer flowers than normal, smaller leaves, weaker stems, less defence against pathogens, these are early signs. 4-5 flowers on a mature complex hybrid Phalaenopsis, for example, is in most cases a sign of stress. They produce much more than that under normal circumstances. Ultimately discolorations and unsightly patches will appear and the orchid will become extremely weak. Google plant nutrition to see what every nutrient is used for by plants :)

      Hello paola devalle! I am no expert by far but maybe I can help. I have had a orchid a little while. Brown roots don't always mean root rot. It could mean overwatering and lack of air the roots turn brown. I also have some brown roots but they are firm. So I leave them. However, the brown roots that are mushy and soft are dead and need to be removed. Sometimes I cut to the heathy grow when the whole root isn't dead. I hope this helps. Water less and look for signs of time to water she mentioned in the video. Many blessing to your orchid baby.

    First, I want to thank you for a great You Tube show. I love it!
    I have a question for you. I just got a cute phalaenopses orchid. It looks very healthy except some of the roots, which are nice and green have very faint small brownish spots all over. Kind of like if you were to paint them with water color. Should I be concerned? The plant is in bloom now so I don't know if I should repot it. The medium it has now is some kind of moss. I would love to send you some pictures but I don't know how to go about it. Thank you.

    hey danny ! have you ever experienced with vandas a healthy root that is actively growing that catches a fungi and starts to turn yellow, stops growing and dies? i'm not going to go on and on about it but my vanda is going through this! but most of its roots are covered in algae and on the dry side and it has one really green root until now that it!! i think it will seriously be set back and secretly i think i know how the fungi got there , not enough air circulation, so time for wooden baskets for me too!! xoxoL.

    My question is why do people use female pronouns for orchids?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +3

      Because people might have Latin native languages, or Greek, or maybe even others, in which nouns have genders from a grammatical point of view.. so it's more natural for us to speak that way :) orchid as a word is female in at least one Latin language, orchid names might be male or female.
