Best commander I had was a Welshman who recruited my squad and a sniper squad as his guard unit. He would be fighting on the front line nearly the whole game communicating with each squad. He coordinated tank supported infantry charge down a street while calling in a bombing run further down the street rolling it towards us. Most cinematic moment in the game I’ve had and it was a miracle we only lost 4 dudes out of 4 squads and a tank but, as he said, “By god we’ll get down this damn street, even if we arrive in pieces.”
They should just have a little promotion widget on the main menu showing videos from the community. And, most importantly, tutorial videos like yours Monoe.
Thank you! They've tweeted out my beginners guide in the past and posted it on steam and stuff, so that's good, but yeah, I'd love to see the game itself have links to this.
@@monoespacial didnt battlefield 4 had a promotion system, where you get faster regeneration and such? Telling specific squad leaders what to do might seem daunting at first, but in my experience, most people like knowing what's expected of them (both in HLL and in general). They will likely do what you ask as long as you are patient and supportive...and if they don't play HLL like it's COD.
Herd the sheep. Anytime I am SL and start talking and ordering they come out of the woodwork with mics. Hell even as an MG I'll start asking for pings for suppression and everyone kinda starts clicking. You just gotta be the one to start the snowball.
I played a game today and we didn’t have a Commander for quite a long time. So I switched my role to Commander. I have never done it before, I informed my squad leaders that I took the role as nobody was commander and that I’m a total NOOB. I offered the role to anyone who has experience. I was surprised that I was met with positivity, encouragement and a lot of help. The Commander role is tough! We gave our all, but we lost out in the end. Whenever I took a supply truck out I got blown up or killed. So I used a lot of supply drops.
One of the many good points I agreed with in this video I think more people need to try is defense. The general consensus is that defense is boring, but running at the enemy point either turns into a meat grinder or sometimes both teams move past each other like ships in the fog. Yet if you stay on defense you can safely assume that 80~90% of the enemy team in your average pub game is coming straight for you. Plenty of action and in a better position make it funner imo
Defense is not boring at all when done right. You have to do recons. Send on of your guys out to check a certain area. Stand on a elevated area with your binoculars. Keep an eye out for airheads,... And help the commander make the judgement whether or not some attacking squads shoud fall back. I like defending better than attacking.
Good defense can be better than attacking in my opinion. I took part in an event and my squad was assigned to defense. I was the Machine Gunner and just obliterated the enemies. After the event the enemy team gave me compliments for the accurate MG defense
Besides all of that, it's not like the game will be over in 10 minutes and you'll miss the war. These games take so damn long sometimes, that you really have all the time in the world.
I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this to us. Sometimes we play a match without a commander and I can only wonder what it's like to take up the role as commander. Thank you for your insights!
Just a quick point about building garrisons, you can build them inside buildings … it’s a bit hit and miss because some buildings you can’t but others you can, but the big win is that bombing runs can’t destroy them.
Best hell let loose videos! Im level 183, and everything in this video is correct. All of these tips should also be applied to SLs, if youre a sl and see no defensive garries help the commqnder and get that done!
We had a game on Hill 400 nobody took commander in the first 5 minutes so I hopped on. It was my first game of playing commander so it was quite though. Good thing I had teammates asking for stuff and keeping me updated. We eventually won.

Already a level 13 commander on ps5!! It’s my preferred role! I personally believe the man job of the commander is to place garrisons, specifically defense garrisons at first and almost importantly….sneaking behind enemy lines and providing multiple routes to the attacking objective via multiple garrisons! So far the best tactic I’ve found is telling your team to hold on defense (or push a small amount out of the defense objective) and wait for you/another flanking squad to get the attacking garrisons set up…once they set, THEN you attack.
I was J squad leader on defense (Heicko [date plan]) in the St Marie Du Mont game that you used in this video. Learned the game using your videos and it was really cool to play with you. Cheers for the commend as well at the end, love a good defense.

It's easier than running on the front lines in many ways, your only real disadvantage is you can't place OPs which is annoying. If you just spawn in vehicles when people ask and try to keep up some garrisons you're doing a big service for your team. And remember to cast Last Stand on cooldown so you can spawn in everything for free for 30 secs! Including converting resources >:)

I am just watching this video now, as the game just came out a few days ago on console and I am an Xbox player. I am so glad you threw that bit in about not feeling bad about losing as a commander because I have had just as many matches where I win as where I lose as commander and it can be so frustrating sometimes. Nice trick for Strafing Runs which are mostly useless. If you see a garrison in friendly territory turn red - or - a Airhead is seemingly overrun - dropping a strafe run on your garrison or airhead can potentially kill the person dismantling your spawn point quickly.
Almost level 70 and have never attempted the CO position, might give it a try if no one takes it right away. Wanted to know what I was getting into, so thanks for the vid. Wish me luck!
Had one real communicative commander earlier who was supporting the absolute fuck out of me and my spotter. Made harassing enemy reinforcements significantly easier and slowed their assualt enough for our team to rapidly capture 3 points
Admittedly strafing runs need to be thought out but they are great for immersion which is main thing for me, so personally hope people keep using it. Also one bug bear is squad respawning to better locations. Keeping immersion is more important than winning, I always fight like heck to stay alive & deal with what situation comes up. Respawning or rerolling before dying is a total cop out & ruining game. So tired of seeing my squad dissapear to take advantage of it.
Sure but in certain situations it depends on how you think about the play being made. For instance, when playing the road to Bastogne map, if an integral point on the defence is lost, it's a completely viable strategy to tell your squad leaders to redeploy their squads at a garrison or hq point closer to your new defence objective.
Think of it as, my reserves in said garrison are now moving out and those soldiers are casualties of an overrun objective. There are certain times where your suspension of disbelief will have to come into play considering the limit of 100 players to a match. You gotta think of a garrison as an actual garrison not just a "spawn point"
I have been having some success with strafing runs. usually getting 3-4 kills with it. but the cost is too high for the damage it can deal. if it was 100 it would work nicely with a recon plane for a 200 ammunition quick strike to help out your team if you dont have 400 to use on a recon + bombing run. But now you spend half of a bombing run while a bombing run can do so much more damage. Either make the strafing run 100 ammunition or make it so it can destroy a garrison. Because right now its a bit lackluster.
As a TOTAL newbie to HLL (ive played about 15 hours) i have found your videos really helpful. BUT you have to get stuck in to learn (and die a lot!) The biggest drawback I found firstoff was orientation ie N/W/E/S and gauging distances…… I am big on coms but there seems to be a lot of players who just dont talk. Squad leaders either say nothing or shout at you to do this or that expecting (me) to be an expert on what's what…… when I say I need help as I'm a newbie they usually just kick me out of the squad!! This isn't daunting me and I expect those sort of knockbacks and like in most things in this game (by what I can see) you need patience at lot of the time. These sort of tactical games are great and Ive been waiting for this sort of game for yonks…..
Honestly I’m only level 24 but I have played many different roles like medic, engineer and sl so I feel this is the next step I want to take. watching this video has helped me out so much with understanding how to command with efficiency.
I'd play squad leader and focus on building garrisons before playing commander. At level 24 you shouldn't yet have a proper idea of where you should put them.
Thanks Champ - Legendary !! , have played Commander a few times , In My Opinion... Communication HAS to be the most important aspect of this game , but very pleased to learn about Final Stand and Encouragement ....also, found out time frames with Supplies etc, I agree , Using Strafing Run is a huge waste of resources. Keep up the good work..
Even if I dont play commander anytime soon at least I understand how I can better communicate with my commander now. But this is what im aspiring to right now becasue im tired of bad commanders. Mutes that do nothing or those that keep making really bad calls because they are role playing to hard.
My last game we almost lost with 5 sec left, we somehow came back and won, capped 1 more stronghold than other team. I kept hearing squad leader say oh its the commander, who was running around in the woods of the map. Im like what because there was enemies EVERYWHERE Then I saw him on map running around the town we were trying to take basically running around in circles, i thought this was hilarious, and I finally realized someone was playing on the map and it was pretty funny. Good times, though I never did see the commander in person, pretty funny
The argument for and against garries inside a point will continue forever. For those of us who have won many a game by holding a strong Point from within, the garrie saves inside. Usually a "barn" or trench is the place that gets everything the enemy can toss at it. The secret that works "EVERY TIME" is that 50 or more supplies are within reach to re build them! SLs listen up! Have Support keep supplies ready to drop and also drop them all over the point. That is what frustrates attackers, when you just keep suppling troops to inside the point.
I love how this game pretty much forces cooperation, it makes the game so much more involved and fun. Unlike the goddamn 10 yr old level CoD which is purely a run and gun, no strategy to its name
I can't stress enough how much I wish the game would have a better tutorial and secondly some sort of note when booting the game that reads "communications is essential to your teams success"
The bombing destroying garrison and not people CAN be very good, but can also suck. While killing infantry buys you 20 seconds, killing only garrison while enemies have supports might buy you actually 0 seconds as they might be able build an OP instantly. So best way would be to try do as much harm, that's why you must choose the best angle for it and have as good intel as possible. Also, taking the supply truck to build garrisons might look good but is actually very bad. You don't need so many at start, you can solve this issue by communicating and assigning supports do their roles correctly. If they don't then you don't have a team and you're trying to compensate. So one easy way is to give the truck to a squad lead and a support for the furthest spawn, then drop supplies for one in own territory.
I disagree with everything you've said. "While killing infantry buys you 20 seconds, killing only garrison while enemies have supports might buy you actually 0 seconds". No, because if they build a garrison it will take 40s for the spawn wave... like... that doesn't even make an ounce of sense. You can twist any scenario to find a case where X isn't useful. I think you're forgetting about experience playing the game. Attacks often fail unless you destroy the enemy garrisons, whether with a bombing run or some other way. You say "best way would be to try to do as much harm". If you think destroying a garrison isn't "much harm" then you and are are playing a different game. And why is taking the supply truck at the start "very bad"? You don't explain this at all. More often than not it's VERY hard to get people to build garrisons, which is why YOU as Commander needs to do this. I fail to see how giving the truck to an SL is good but taking it yourself is "very bad".
@@monoespacial actually is very simple, is the same mistake I see every single game. Every single game becomes a rush, and when the team failing has to retreat it has no extra defenses built at all. I saw games when after loosing mid the game ended in 5-minutes after, each other strong point falling instantly. Is like everyone goes for all of nothing. About the 40 seconds, you are wrong. If they lose OP but no infantry, guess what, they don't need to redeploy yet. So the 40 seconds are out of question, they need to die first to need those seconds. Assuming your troops were not rushing while bombing run was under way, your troops might actually need more than 40 seconds to get in, find the new garrison, etc. Again, I said killing ONLY garrison is bad, so you are twisting words for your liking. If is VERY hard to have SL build garrisons we get to the point where I told from start that you don't have a team. In that case what you do individually doesn't have a huge impact since they are not following orders anyway, so at that point I can very easy say they will not do what they need after a bombing run either. So you need to decide, you trust and work as a team, or you play solo. You need to decide if you tell how many supports you need in the start so nodes can be build right away in HQ (you can have 6 nodes in a couple of seconds at start, you'll need only 3 more on an advanced position (or in another 30 seconds in third HQ base if people redeploy by switching roles). Like that you'll have at least 3 supports already in transport trucks (those not redeploying) and will be at the furthest point available when game begins. Why is it a waste ? because you from truck you will deploy every single time 150 supplies, not 50 as you need for garrison, and if you go as I see many do, you'll let 100 resources in some odd and totally useless places. Meanwhile on offence maps for example, when you defend, engineers can use the trucks to build fast very strong defenses on the last 2 strong points. Most of the time, as enginner, I have to beg for new supply trucks because somebody decided is best if they take a walk with it while ignoring everything else. So again, if you presume you as commander play alone because nobody listens, well, the feeling is mutual, most games commanders are blind and play solo.
Hey guys , I Play console and to tell the truth it is very essential to run commander but also have great squads, If you’re playing defense it is best to have teams of mg, Support, engineers. I can’t stress how much a team can defend a single strongpoint with good communication and great defense. I hate the games where it’s defense and squads are pushing up and not holding the strongpoint or when you drop supplies and nobody does anything with them . It’s very ridiculous
No, you use you bombing run because you used final stand. Bombing run is 400 munitions, 10 min CD(same as final stand, so every bombing run should be free), and you need a lot of munition for a good arty players. And yes, you drop heavy tanks every 5 minutes, so every second tank is free. You need to watch those timings and spawn tanks. Depending on the map's strong points you choose two hqs and spawn heavy tanks there every 5 minutes, using final stand(and free encouraged+bombing run+converting resourses) every 10 minutes
Do not, DO NOT, as a commander, tell your entire team to fall back to defend a point. That one squad on attack point will get creamed and you lost all momentum. It will be fall back after fall back.
IMO HLL would greatly improve from having instead of a single ''commander'' - having a command squad- 1 commander, 1 support and 1 engineer . fewer moments of ''i have no supplies for the basics let alone tanks'' and after that the other two could jump on arty or dismantle garrys etc
No, what I do as commander is set up good spawn points for the team. I do talk to the squads and let them know for example if we need to push to a particular area. Like "The enemy keeps attacking from the south, I need a squad to push south and clear them out. Able squad, can you do that?" But it's not like you're orchestrating some grand strategy that involves every single squad to do as you demand.
I bet there's lots of PS Plus players that are trying the game out who really aren't the audience for this game. Give it a month or 2 for only the players that actually care about the game to still be playing it. Things will be better then.
Man I feel that on Xbox no ones gonna be playing the game tactically they’ll play it like a cod of bf shooter lol Edit(it’s crossplay so I I guess there will be some people who communicate 😅)
ill tell you guys a story during Kurks German side. Im a type of player loves to help the team building nodes, garrisons, heck i drive base to the front lines in a supply truck back and fort all day to help the commander and the team to set up so we could win. We were at 4-1,so this commander is level 64 im like 180. I was requesting for a supply truck then he said to me. “We dont need a supply truck be useful and setup garrisons” i was like okay thats rude. But heck how im gonna build garrys without supplies. Then i requested again a supply drop he said “just get off your useless” . Then i fricking snapped I destroyed all the friendly nodes and drive all the spawned trucks to the nearest trench. He was like crying saying that im an idiot. Then i replied with “dont fuck with an engineer”. Then we lose at the last 30 minutes couldnt recover due to destroyed garrisons.
Well that was pretty immature of you . Should have just done your job and spoke to the commander after about his negative style . People like you ruin the game for the other 49 people on your side

Man, just thank you a lot for your videos, they are extremely powerfull. I guess you spend an enormous time to make them, and that is crazy. Thx.
1:45 Banger alert! Uncharted Worlds
Too late I’m 4-0 as commander.
Just got a PS5 and these vids helped me a lot. Thanks
Best thing to do is put a level cap on officer and commander roles, too many people with no coms trying these roles
The Mass Effect music though
Even if I dont play commander anytime soon at least I understand how I can better communicate with my commander now. But this is what im aspiring to right now becasue im tired of bad commanders. Mutes that do nothing or those that keep making really bad calls because they are role playing to hard.
My last game we almost lost with 5 sec left, we somehow came back and won, capped 1 more stronghold than other team.
I kept hearing squad leader say oh its the commander, who was running around in the woods of the map. Im like what because there was enemies EVERYWHERE
Then I saw him on map running around the town we were trying to take basically running around in circles, i thought this was hilarious, and I finally realized someone was playing on the map and it was pretty funny. Good times, though I never did see the commander in person, pretty funny
Finally a good commander guide! Great job Mono!!!
It would be a good guide, if he did not give a couple of just wrong advises.
Love that mass effect music
FIRST!! Btw your tips have made me such a better player. Thank you Mono!
I love how this game pretty much forces cooperation, it makes the game so much more involved and fun. Unlike the goddamn 10 yr old level CoD which is purely a run and gun, no strategy to its name
Been squad leading more or less well for a bit, mostly wanna learn commanding BECAUSE IM GOSH DANG TIRED OF NOT HAVING ONE IN MY GAMES !!
Very helpful man thanks
New sub new player on series X. Thanks for content.
Another grate guide! Thanks.
I can't stress enough how much I wish the game would have a better tutorial and secondly some sort of note when booting the game that reads "communications is essential to your teams success"
That is just common sense though! The problem with common sense is that its not very common haha
Good job building Garry in the middle of a field
If this had time stamps 😭 good video non the less, learned a lot.
Is that mass effect music in the background?
It is
Commander workload is insane
Ya a commander with a Squad maybe a idea?
hmm I wonder how this match up would go...
1337 commander with average players vs average commander with 1337 players.
I think the latter would win.
23 minutes of goodness
tictak is the best commander
@@monoespacial glassman is best burning man
@@LuGer212 Luger best Luger?
No, you use you bombing run because you used final stand. Bombing run is 400 munitions, 10 min CD(same as final stand, so every bombing run should be free), and you need a lot of munition for a good arty players.
And yes, you drop heavy tanks every 5 minutes, so every second tank is free. You need to watch those timings and spawn tanks. Depending on the map's strong points you choose two hqs and spawn heavy tanks there every 5 minutes, using final stand(and free encouraged+bombing run+converting resourses) every 10 minutes
Level 90 never tried commander yet😬
Do not, DO NOT, as a commander, tell your entire team to fall back to defend a point. That one squad on attack point will get creamed and you lost all momentum. It will be fall back after fall back.
Yeah I played commander a few times when I was like lvl 20 and that was not good for my team
can we get a best graphic settings video
IMO HLL would greatly improve from having instead of a single ''commander'' - having a command squad- 1 commander, 1 support and 1 engineer . fewer moments of ''i have no supplies for the basics let alone tanks'' and after that the other two could jump on arty or dismantle garrys etc
I've seen people talk about how they're thinking about implementing a Logistics Squad so resources and building can be more common
Had a game last night. I had 6 tank squads. Each one. Locked their fucking squad so nobody could join so i had 6 solo tanks
Mass effect is good
I think playing as Cmdr on console beta version is bugged as I can't move position of bombing, strafing runs etc. Which is frustrating.
commanders should really have a way to punish squad leaders who ignore/argue with the commander or atleast make them switch off SL
I disagree. I'd hate being forced to play under someone else's orders
@@monoespacial isn't that what you do all the time though? Isn't that what the role is there for? To give orders and direct the battle?
No, what I do as commander is set up good spawn points for the team. I do talk to the squads and let them know for example if we need to push to a particular area. Like "The enemy keeps attacking from the south, I need a squad to push south and clear them out. Able squad, can you do that?"
But it's not like you're orchestrating some grand strategy that involves every single squad to do as you demand.
@@monoespacial gotcha thanks for clearing that up
Just coz strafe run is hard to use DOSENT mean it’s bad I killed 12 with one run you just gotta understand the map and enemy position
12 kills is still expensive vs using the artillery for the exact same result.
On console it’s hard to communicate right now… lots of people just not understanding the importance of communication
I bet there's lots of PS Plus players that are trying the game out who really aren't the audience for this game.
Give it a month or 2 for only the players that actually care about the game to still be playing it. Things will be better then.
@@monoespacial that’s what I’m thinking as well
Most are.at.least Listening
Just Order them around
Works more often AS you might Imagine.
Man I feel that on Xbox no ones gonna be playing the game tactically they’ll play it like a cod of bf shooter lol
Edit(it’s crossplay so I I guess there will be some people who communicate 😅)
Do you think that lvl 60 is enough to start to play Commander? Most of the time, i played the squad leader and now, i want to try the commander role.
Yeah, give it a try and get your feet wet.
How the hell do you spin the strafing/ bombing run angle so quickly?
You spin it every time you click. So... Just clicking on it fast I guess.
What the word he saying at 4.09 " $#@!@" garrisons ? Thnx
Red zone garrisons
When I play as commander the orders never come up when I open the map do you know why
What do you mean "Orders never come up"? The markers on the map are put by officers (Commander + SLs)
Good video, almost makes me want to play commander....nah, still don't.
I'm sitting at lvl 80 and I still don't feel comfortable about trying commander

I hope you have a greate day
ill tell you guys a story during Kurks German side.
