A new report calculates that Sony‘s value dropped by around $10 billion last week, following its revised PS5 sales forecast.
Sony dropped expectations from 25mil to 21mil
Sony shares fell as much as 8.4% and closed down 6.5%, partly as a result of the revised PS5 hardware sales forecast
Also a drop drop in operating margin in Sony’s gaming business to 6% (compared to 9% in the December quarter of 2022 and 12-13% in the years before this).
Jefferies equity analyst Atul Goyal told CNBC that the new shipment forecast wasn’t as disappointing as the low level of operating margin.
Margins at Sony’s gaming division were 12-13% for four years, and that its current margin of 6% are “extremely disappointing”, and “almost near decade lows”.
Sony’s margins should have been rising during this period instead of falling, given that there are “various tailwinds that should have driven up the margins towards 20%” such as the increase in digital game sales as well as Sony’s PS Plus service, which has a margin of around 50%.
For context, Sony shipped Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part 1, Gran Truismo 7, Stray and God of War Ragnarok in 2022 whereas in 2023 they only shipped Spider-Man 2, Horizon Burning Shores and Humanity.
2022 also had the PS5 smash hit Elden Ring and while Baldur’s Gate 3 was huge in 2023, it seemingly didn’t sell nearly as well on PS5.
Also, GT7, Ragnarok, Elden Ring and Forbidden West were all shipped on PS4 which boosted sales whereas neither Spider-Man 2, Burning Shores or Spider-Man 2 made it to the older console which definitely caused a loss of revenue.
All of this to say, this really just seems like a circumstance where yes, game budgets are too high, but there are a ton of outside factors that stopped Sony from raking it in as usual and with all the rumors of 2025 being one of the greatest years Sony will ever have in terms of release number and quality, I think it’s safe to assume they’ll be back on track sooner rather than later.

My concern is that both companies are so concerned over monopoly that they are not delivering anymore stellar gaming experiences
Disagree, even 3rd party AAA are struggling with making good games - it probably has more to do with younger devs that make different types of games than the older ones we loved
The social envirment of today with virtue signaling & politic correctness is trickling down and snuffing out creativity in all media
It's a mixture of everything.
- Companies now owned by people with no creative talent.
- Oversaturation of live-service games and iper-realistic games, that are now too expensive to make and maintain.
- Technology advancement went to a point where we can't distinguish reality from fiction anymore. There's very little variety.
- Inclusivity is cool but it's inserted in bland ways.

Yea I agree and do the same thing..I seen others responses to this disagreeing but at the end of the day...At least I can pay 17 for a month and then decide if I should just use it for something more important next month or continue...I understand in the long run you're paying more man but that's like over 100 dollars right there..I just don't know about paying that much at one time for something I don't use enough..
Despite what Sony's lingering success and goodwill from the PS4 era, the PS5 has not ever done very well and the main reason sales were up so much in 2021 and 2022 was the fact that shortages were finally being solved and also, people finally started to spend more freely after the pandemic came to an end. Finally, the utter lack of PS5 exclusives has done little to convince gamers to invest in a system that they knew is modular nor likely to last very long.

The helldivers story kind of reminds me of outriders they had a lot of issue and it was a four-player co-op game also.
I am still surprised that a PlayStation backed game doesn't get enough server resources to resolve the server capacity issues.

Indeed, my licenced series xs wired controller has four back buttons that can be mapped. Maybe it could work with a ps4 modifier attachment with back pedals?
@FoxUnitNell I was using the elite series 2 on pc, but it has a locked USB clock speed which has 9ms input delay. The dualsense and edge have a stock USB clock speed at 3.9ms and can be overclocked to 0.9ms input delay. This is only applicable to PC, but has made a huge difference with competitive play for me. Gamers Heaven has some great controller info... he is the controller captain with over 200 reviews.

Look, Sony’s margins are fine considering that now that practically everybody has a PS five or a PS4 they’re proper margins won’t be as high as 20% and besides the games sell the console I have up to this point over 30 games and plus I have my PS4 games from back in the day too so if anything has taught me about my PlayStation, everybody overlook the fact that the older consul is the better model nobody’s gonna go for the slim model unless they’re old models broken. I don’t even want a PlayStation slim now depending what the pro looks like maybe I will consider it, but by that point, I’d rather have a computer.

Also, with Helldivers, I had pretty good luck the rest of the weekend but had to quit out Friday night and on Saturday night took me and my friends about 30ish mins to get I'm. Sunday I feel like everyone was defeated so had no more than a minute wait to get in.

I was a PlayStation fan until PS5 came out. You couldn’t get one except from scalpers. Second I think the PS5 is too big. It’s a great big hunk of curved plastic. And it doesn’t have a compelling game to make me want it. I’m still sticking with my PS4
I basically bought a PS5 to play PS4 games cause I skipped the PS4 and wasn't going to pay $400 for a last gen console when I can get a PS5 for $100 more. actually got a big discount on the PS5 cause walmart sold me one they didn't have and after waiting a couple months I complained so they gave me $125 discount and expedited my console when they got a new batch.

Why would Sony sell consoles that they won't profit from (price is 2x or more cheaper than your Desktop Computer) when they can just have an APP like GAMEPASS....and have exclusives.....or learn from Nintendo and make it handheld like what XBOX plans for their next console that is also a handheld.....its the games that mattered most and not the graphics like what happened to FORSPOKEN......AS COMPARED TO ZELDA, BG3, AND ELDEN RING....
Elden ring has a free ps5 upgrade with buying the ps4 disc. When I buy that games I’ll prob be doing the ps4 for that reason

Queue trick is lies… past Sunday I got kicked from the game on ps5 n seen that queue for hours. I just left it on that screen n came back hours later to see me get let in .. but I learned to be patient when this ish used to be common for destiny 2

Sales of PlayStation 5 dropped because people are waiting on the "Pro" announcement, some are waiting for it to come out to snag a used PS5 and some want the "Pro". But how I see it, there will not be a generation after PS5, both Xbox and PlayStation will shift to releasing for PC since consoles reached their peak to the point where locking it down for a console isn't viable financially anymore.
I have a PS5 console but i prefer PS4 version of the game instead of the PS5 game because it takes alot less room on my harddrive. Example i checked one of my PS4 games and it said 36 GB. Then checked the PS5 version and it said 110GB. I own the PS4 version not the PS5 version. I will always buy the PS4 version of a game instead the PS5 version less money spent less room taken up.
Sony is now regretting the remakes and the remasters that they’ve beeen pumping out and it’s making me laugh ngl😂… they should’ve released a few IP’s each season but they opted the lazy way out and chose to re enhance the already established games💀

I bought at 45,5€ 8 months after release, i can find it at 35€ but stock probably run out before christmas at that place, i can find on another places at 45-55€ (ps4 or ps5) so it not exactly at full price but keeping at 60-75% which it still good for them and a good price for the quality.
I mean more than 300h in still on the first playthough, i burnout a little trying to do everything and leveling up a lot.

I bought a PS5 just to play God of war and I'm not that impressed I don't like what they're doing with the character of kratos so now that I've played it and I have played evil West and they are surprisingly very alike ,back in the day God of war was always in its own league there was nothing like it . They probably sell less consoles because they're so freaking hard to find I mean usually you were able to go to Walmart and just pick one up but they don't ever have them there so you have to go out of your way to Best buy or something normally that's not anywhere near somebody's house is always downtown somewhere and then you're lucky if they even have one.

After experiencing g PSVR2, I truly can’t go back to flat gaming. It’s so boring. I wish everyone who owned a ps5 would just try psvr2 because then they’d buy it. And then we could get some really good games for this thing. Not to say there aren’t great games for it. Just few and far between. I understand it’s because there is t the same market for vr as there is flat and I’ll never understand it. You’d rather play on a tv then be inside the world the game portrays. It’s like deciding to drive a ford focus when you have a Ferrari that costs the same as the focus.

😄hi like point out no word on ps5 news page of xbox games to there system 2nd playstation games use HDR and atmos tech. while xbox uses dolby vision 4k 120 hz with atmos and 8k upscaling at 8k with HDR with atmos quality.only thing at this time playstation is there exclusives for ps4 and ps5 and there exclusivity contract with marvel for now.

Screw Helldivers 2 and it's concept. Short term enjoyment and then on to the next thing. Not good for game preservation. Online only games should not be the norm. Talk to me in 5 years and see how awesome Helldivers 2 is to play. My bet is those servers will be long shut down by then and the game is rendered unplayable. Should have made a single player option for this squad based game...like Star Wars Republic Commando was able to do 20 years ago. Online only games are merely rentals. I'm surprised how often I find myself going back and playing older games from 5, 10, 20, and 30 years ago. Online only games are a sunk cost.
The only good thing I can say about PS5 is they took a page out of Xbox book and made PlayStation premium like Xbox game pass .

Sony has let me down so much I've bout 2 ps5 games worth playing everything else is rushed games that are terrible. That being said ps5 was a let down I feel I bought it so I could stare at it but I holding out hope maybe they'll have more games that are open world that are worth it

I'm not sure Sony fans have a grasp of the games business. An investment is not the same as an acquisition... Sony do not own Elden Ring! I would argue that Hogwarts legacy probably made more money for Sony than Elden Ring. In fact most of Elden Rings sales 44% were on PC with 27% being on PS5, totally invalidating your point. Just look around you, listen to the financial expert you are so eager to dismiss. Console sales and first party games are not all there is to financial success. But you know what, you guys do you. What do people who invest real money in Sony stock know about anything?
