      Could have sacrifed some wall thickness to make wider pins. Would w0rk better most likely

      The pins aren't necessarily load bearing on this scenario. The design transfers the load the the casing on the opposite side of the pin.

      @@dalejrjunior1298those pins are made of tungsten, you’re not messing them up, i’m sure the people who made multiple iterations, tested them, improved rhem, then decided they were good enough to unveil knew what they were doing

    Looks very good machined, but it also looks like it's very sensitive and I'm not sure how it will react on high torque. The smaller you build things the harder it is to make them robust enough.

      I disagree the wheel will push the pin directly into the hub, the effective leverage it has to break those pins is almost 0.
      As long as there’s is dual or quad pin engagement at any given time, which we don’t see in this video, then I think it would be quite a good design

      I don't think that would be the failure point. What's more likely is dirt/sand grains and oil/chain lube working their way behind those tiny springs

    Looks extremely good for torque when clean and new, I just wonder how those little springs and pins are going to hold up to dirt and moisture.

    past a certain price point it goes from being a matter of functionality to a matter of how satisfying the sound is. it does sound nice but i can’t imagine it functions any better than traditional ratchet pawl hubs.
    and for those complaining about grime/etc, all low-backlash hubs have the same issues. with pawls, they get gummed up and stick disengaged, and they slip. if you want to beat on your bike and not clean it, don’t spend several hundred dollars on a hub?

    No, the upper and lower pin are in phase. So they are operating in 3 phase. Every 4th pin works together. The nice thing is how quick it would engage. You would have to use a really light lube to avoid gunking up the pins. There is not much contact area, and the contact area is angled so it pishes in the direction of movement, but also pushes out against the hub bearings. So it wants to push the hub open as torque is applied. As the bearings wear out, there is a chance it would slip under heavy torque.

      That is concept hub model, not even installed inside rim... But we all know - all thech that we use today were wild concepts 20, 50,100... years ago... For example chevron gear teeth was taken into cars - by Citroen in year 1900... In 2000 only it was installed inside DT Swiss Hubs... Which are not 100% reliable till now...but 100 years passed...)))

    Maintaining parts til they break, this doesn't look friendly with grease. It could work with transmission oil, but it'd need to be sealed. But in any situation, I wonder how long it would take to round the edges off the pins and latching mechanism

      A light EP-0 grease would probably be fine. Put heavier springs in the assembly.

    Notice how the pins are staggered? Thats probably to limit the slop when the drive reengages. However it also means ALL of the force is directly on ONE of those pins! Imagine how quickly those would shear off

    Seems like a terrible direction to side load those pins against the bores they ride in. I'd like to see what comes of it but my first impression is that its not ideal.

      now imagine a bit of grime on those precision parts and the nightmare of cleaning it before failing to reassemble it as a tiny spring flew off somewhere. nice engineering but 0 practicality

      @@rhetorical1488 imagine having to clean what I assume is a blind hole thats 1-2mm wide, fking nightmare and I thought cleaning the splines of a dt swiss ratchet is a nightmare

      I'm sure the both the Lockpicking Lawyer and Hambini would both have some comments about those chintzy lock pins serving as freehub mechanisms... not to mention the side thrust that it's gonna generate

    I love mechanical sounds.. I remember growing up before they electrified everything we used springs for everything. I was using a hand crank the other day and it snapped back and the sound of the spring reverberating in the cabinet sounded just like my childhood ❤😂

    Looks awesome but id wonder about the heat all the friction on the sides of the pins would produce after a long coast. Even with grease it would eventually warm up id think

      Yes... *nearly imperceptible* in 'Real World Application' because *Who really cares How 'FAST' They Are Going -> When They Are Not Pedaling...?*
      And, yes, it is easily 'measured' with a bare spinning wheel... *harder to tell when that relatively tiny friction has to 'SlowDown' over 200# or 90kg of Bike&Body Momentum...*

      It's not really correlated. You could also have more friction but almost silent (like sprag clutches typically have).

    I keep imagining one with a drum brake type of engagement where as soon as it goes in the right direction plates expand out into a cylinder griping it. The harder you peddle the more it presses into the drum.
    For now I am happy with the best design yet, Onyx

      You realize most strange hubs like this don’t have pawl/spring mechanisms right? What spring are u gonna stretch on a magnet driven ratcheting system? There aren’t any.

    It sounds pretty. It looks pretty. I love how there's no room for backslip. I have concerns about what happens when actual torque is applied.

    Looks interesting and as long as they can seal the mechanism completely, it should work. If they can’t, then when the pins gum up it’s over. The failure mode would likely be stuck in the compressed position so it wouldn’t lock anymore. Time will tell I guess.

    Looks like it can take some torque, but all that friction would make for one hell of a back-drag on the output.

      I think it'll take more torque then people will give it credit for but not like the ratchet wrench they assume what the mechanism is for based of the sound

    This is a freewheel mechanism of the freehub type. The most reliable ones use big loud clicky pawls, or star ratchets. This assembly of fine pins and tiny springs has no business being on a bicycle hub that will be lubed with grease and operated in temps from -10c to +45c.

    The side load is fully supported by metal... A decent bit of it too i do think you could work this better though, only need like 4 throughout the entire cylindrical face... Could space them out more to increase bore size of those lil guys but still would work

    Id make sure the angle of the attack angle is pulling the pins in, and actually locking the mechanism. Otherwise this eill just slip under any high torque

    One third of the teeth are immediately engaged, so there is no chance of load being applied when the teeth might slip a notch. This may be a feature in search of a problem. Do dtswiss teeth wear out?

    Assuming there's going to be cross hub engagement, this thing seems like it would have like 12-16 pins. Imagine the engagement and noise from the standard 6.

    If **FOUR** *Pins Engage* (at a time), this may be as good as I9...
    I still *prefer *ONYX** and *DT-Swiss* Hope Hayes King Hubs before Industry9...
    I say *"Four PIN Engagement"* because the *cutaway* is representative of ¼ or 25% of the Hub, and it does sound 'concerted', that is; it sounds like multiple pins are clicking at nearly the exact same time as you see each 'single' pin 'click'...

    Sicherlich ein gutes Konzept um wenig Leerbewegung zu haben bis der Freilaufkörper die Nabe dreht, aber garantiert nicht sehr haltbar bei hohem Eingangsdrehmoment..
    PS: krasser Sound, wenn man darauf steht 👌🏼

    It looks like those pins aren’t engaged at the stake time. That would give the indexing three times the number teeth on ratchet. All the load would be on a single pin.

      I see at least two pins engaged simultaneously (top and bottom of the cutaway, cover the middle two with your finger to see it more easily), it looks like this occurs in every third pin.

    I see pins failing, between going out of round because of too many engagements, and sticking once debris gets in all those springs.

    it looks like they are sequenced so that some are in the locked flat position and others are on the incline, which seems like it would make it super weak

    What would happen if you had one pawl facing the other way? What if it was manually actuated instead of self actuated.

    What this looks good at is engagement with near zero play and smooth coasting. What is concerning is the small number of pins taking that shearing force at any given point in the cycle. I'd take slightly more slop in exchange for having six or more pins fullyengaged at a time. This looks like it does between 2-3 at most. Still, really cool concept.
