Some of the prices quoted by Steve for a brand new full suss E-MTB were nothing short of jaw dropping. $2600 US! By the time these bikes arrive here in the UK those prices will have more than tripled. If this is the post Brexit paradise we were all promised then we were sold one massive lemon and it sucks!

Interesting your chat with the Gates guy. we've had Gates on our eSUV (Mountain bike with mudguards and rack) for 2 years. Very little off road, clean cycle path use and my belt snapped @2600 miles. There are mixed views on durability, some folks claim big milage before replacement, however several posts of snapped belts at relatively low mileage. My 137T costs around £130ish, if you can find one! The replacement front belt wheel and rear sprockets are also pretty expensive compared to conventional sprockets. From my personal experience, the jury is out if I would purchase another bike with the Gates system.
If you have a chain break, you can likely repair with a few spare links and chains are cheap and readily available in every bike shop. The Gates snaps - enjoy your walk home!

Very interesting. Would love a piece on the relationship between the designers at the big frame manufacturers and the bike companies. As I understand it, the frame designers are commonly the origin of the next great ‘thing’. Why? Because it’s all well and good thinking up a new suspension design, but can it be built? The frame builders’ design departments are the teams thinking up what’s the next possible ‘thing’ and offering that to the bike manufacturers. Yes, a piece on that relationship would be fascinating.

The tech in the E mountain bike now is amazing. Really good to see prices are coming down to reality .This is the cutting edge of E vehicles, not cars or motorcycles. Belt drive and internal gearing especially. I have a homemade bike, BBSHD with 7 speed 11-34 tooth rear ,48volt. 42 T front compromise for the road. That will climb really good and that is all I need for internal gearing. Keep it simple is what I will be looking for!Being able to pedal your fair share keeps it honest.

Those appear to indicate huge price drops coming!
My KMC chain (12 speed e version) that came on my Giant Trance X E+ is still good to go after 1000 miles. I don't even know how that is possible - it has not been babied - just cleaned/lubed. fyi: I don't ride in mud since that is a huge no-no in my region and causes major trail damage that prompts land managers to threaten (and have) to permanently close off trails to bikes

Soooo... Licensed by Shimano... my how the mighty have fallen.
"We arent the only game in town anymore and retailers and consumers believe/know third party competitors do test and verify compatibility with our products. Lets cash in by licensing these products."
So now that Shimano figured out how to cash in on what we already kbew all of a sudden they are aknowledging you can mix in non Shimano parts.
This more than any is a sign how much trouble the bike industry is in. Since Shimano isnt getting paid by the larges oems they have to find other income streams right?

What an ugly, car-centric city. The should have built Pumptracks and Dirttracks instead of investing anything anymore in that weird automobilisti-lifestyle of ca. 1925.
