I've got a camp on a lake in northern Maine that is north south oriented with mountains on both sides. The wind picks up and drives through the range and will push 4 foot white caps at 4 foot intervals down the lake at about 6 miles an hour on the regular. I built my 12ft sea nymph a lot like that boat, and it's solid in the waves. I usually don't go full throttle, but can keep it on plane, and above the green water on the worst of days. Thank you for all the inspiration to build tiny boats better!
Baddest video to date. It shows conviction to your passion. 14 feet of tin bucking white caps like a champ and no regrets. Live hard bro. God bless 🙌👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
9:16 I did the same on my boat. Glad I had to tear it apart when I got the parts from TBnation. I’m going to take your advice and add a riser to the tilt.
Cockpits or in the very least a low area to stand wide and sit low in is key for rough weather. Need low floors in lake erie when winds pick up. 4 ft waves with 15 ft trough is about as rough as my 14ft goes into.
@@TinyBoatNation yes fun... But also got to stay aware. One wrong move and you will be testing how much floatation you have and the effectiveness of your life jackets.
@@TinyBoatNationjust get a bigger boat for about the same price or less and have room for all your stuff then pay attention to the weather problem solved why make things intentionally harder and less safe? Great Video Most lakes here near Phoenix Arizona are really high pressure lakes. Lake Pleasant by far is the worst since its the closet to the valley. My daughter and I mainly fish a electric only lake since my boat only has trolling motors. Tempe town lake is electric only. you can't even have a out on the transoms. Plus a permit is required. Fishing is pretty good. I haven't caught too many bass. I mainly anchor and fish so my daughter and I can put lines in the water and hangout and chill together. Creating memories that last a lifetime! Thanks for all your great videos. Stay safe everyone! Happy fishing! William Moore
They only suck when it gets windy. I noticed you had a mountain range in the video. I would guess the wind gets pretty crazy coming off those mountains. This boat would be perfect for a small to mid sized lake in minnesota.
People take a little fishing boat and put all the raised decks and tall fishing chairs on and it raises the center of gravity and makes things scary when the water gets a little choppy. I bought a 16 foot aluminum boat that had been converted into a so-called bass boat and removed all of the raised decks put in a lower floor and made it back into a great stable fishing boat again. You want comfort and pretty go get a pontoon boat and put a recliner on it…
Rule #1 know your vessels limitations on the water and plan accordingly. In other words tiny boats ,rough water and big waves do not mix. Lake Erie taught me and others that.
Ya, I’ve got an old V14 Alumicraft. Deep ,a thick hull plus the V hull with a 15 Evinrude all translates into tuff boat that might save your bacon some day. Have you modified your V14 at all? I’m thinking of removing the center seat on mine but I know it’s a lot stronger with it in place.
@@kentyler966 not sure if they ever changed them. Mine is from the early 70s, has one piece rolled sheet metal seat. I removed them and did new pour foam. Then reinstalled. I added some angle aluminum to the seat lips and am working on floor insert panels. So the bench seats will remain and act as the floor. And the inserts will be flush. That way it can be easily removed to clean underneath. Hoping it works well. But i haven't finished yet. I didn't want to go crazy reframing the boat. I personally don't think the seats add much strength. But Google provided pictures are ruined Jon boats because people took the seats out. So I'm leaving it and hoping the inserts work well.
I am using styrofoam board and 3x5’ mats on top of that. The foam is the same thickness as the floor ribs. This make the bottom ribs a non issue. Moving around on the floor easy and drain well. Pretty cheap, light and effective.
I’m strongly considering buying this boat kit from you guys and wondering if you think it would be safe for the Great Lakes? That’s where I’ll be fishing
It should be fine. You need pretty good instincts and intellect to be competent in navigating the great lakes on any boat. That should be the most important thing.
Hey man, off topic, but I've been following your builds and working on one of my own. I have a riveted aluminum bass boat im redoing, and i have to replace some missing hull rivets. Im debating using stainless steel panheads instead of rivets. Have you experemented this at all or have any thoughts on that?
You’re not gonna be able to get a proper tightening doing that because the stainless steel hardware it will not mushroom and Biden inside the hull to make it tight
@Tiny Boat Nation working on turning it into a walleye/ lake trout boat. Did an aluminum wood hybrid seal the wood with gallons of water seal and then a thick coat of garage floor epoxy with grit added and still ran into warping and rot issues. Working on a redesign now
I like this design, and think I'm going to do something similar with my 14' semi v for use on small midwest lakes and rivers. I like the large open cockpit because I plan to bring my dog and will also need to transport duck decoys when hunting. What size outboard do you have? The boat currently has a wood frame deck on the front, and doesn't go near as fast as I want with a 6 hp motor.
This is why I have my alarm on my fish finder set for considerably more than my actual draft. I go from the lowest part of the boat (bottom of outboard skeg) and set the alarm for 4' more than that. That means I never operate my boat in less than 6' of water. I also don't trust my preloaded maps unless the depth is over 10'. Even then I'm highly skeptical.
@@TinyBoatNation I still haven’t finished my boat life got in the way but hopefully soon. Man the way your boat handles those waves is a true testament.

Hello John, I live in Georgia, and I been fishing a Sun Pro 120 since 2004, I went through several small motors over the years until I lucked up a used 15 hp Mercury 2 stroke at a pawn shop, man with that motor this little boat flies, best mod I ever made, if you can get one, you'll thank me later!!!!
Been there done that weather is a bitch sometimes and drops down on you fast. Having a boat that can handle it enough to get back is a must. Looks like you did a great job even though at times your balls felt like they were in a sling lol.
Follow your channel for years 👍 I think you should design a boat from the ground up to specialize for the stuff you want to do with it and the equipment you want to use with it. What I mean is first pile up all your essentials and then build a boat around it. You have enough experience with Aluminium to pull that of,,,

Damn. That sounds intense. Sounds like where a frost troll would retire. I bet it looks amazing. Such a beautiful state.
I fish Lake Havasu in a 19ft fiberglass skeeter. Ur a trooper for going out in that weather haha

Does adding foam to the inside hatches increase the weight limit as well as helping not sink if capsized

it’s actually really hard to design a boat and put it into production with the rigid guidelines from the US CG. We are dealing with it right now.
Shit is scary my buddy just died back at the beginning of the year he drowned at the lake up by Pinetop because the water and wind got dangerous
That sucks. What lake? I thought they were all small.
what a loser

truth be known when you got beached on the bank probably wouldn't have been in that position if you'd had a bigger boat
It would’ve been worse. I got beached because I couldn’t see how shallow I was because the water was cloudy.
he wouldn't have been in that position if he'd either been using the electronics OR at least knew how to read waves lmao
