  • Hello everybody, I just got back from my honeymoon in Japan and it was so lovely, I’m still euphoric (and jet lagged )! During my travels in Kyushu, I found some really interesting fabric and sewing notions shops and so in this video, I wanted to share those addresses with you and show you what I found 😊
    Enjoy!

    Love your share, I thought I was the only crazy person who loved venturing into fabric stores on my travels to different countries and collecting beautiful pieces.😊 would love it if you would share your project on sewing the top with square neck! ❤

    The Finn in me spotted the Marimekko prints instantly from the thumbnail 😅 I love all the fabrics you found and can't wait to see what you will make out of them!

      😂 They are iconic indeed! Now that I've had some time to think about it, I'm tempted to try and make a sleeveless top out of it rather than a cushion cover... to be continued!

      @@Sarah_Naomi That's a lovely idea! I actually just made a mini backpack out of the beige version of that print for my sister, who loves Marimekko. It turned out pretty cute, even if I say so myself!

    Absolutely fascinating, thank you so much for sharing. We travelled to Japan about ten years ago and I feel the same as you, one of my favourite trips ever. I also came home with some Marimekko fabric! ❤

    I watched the video and thought: is she going to buy Nani Iro fabrics or not….. YES! That would be my first choice! I buy it here in Europe, online at Nunoya in Barcelona for instance, but it must be a lot cheaper in Japan. I would love to go back to Japan, been there once. Beautiful country and so easy to travel. The long trip and the carbon dioxide footprint holds me back though. (Funny that you didn’t know Marimekko. It’s quite famous in Europe too. And I can see why the Japanese love it as well, with the clear lines and colors.) Love your videos.

    • @Sarah_Naomi

      I love Nani Iro fabrics too and they’re still pretty expensive in Japan, but with the exchange rate at the moment, I think I got an exceptionally good deal. I didn’t know about Nunoya, I’ll check it out! I hope you’ll be able to go back and explore Japan as well. I also think about the high cost in not only for my budget, but my carbon footprint as well. It’s difficult to balance the two against discovering new cultures and landscapes and I hope I do so respectfully 😊

    Beautiful fabrics, Sarah 😍 the mauve, purple colours go well with your hair colour and I love the Nani Iro one too! I loved watching your stories on IG and travelling along with you. The kumamon character everywhere in town was hilarious 😂 so funny and cute!

    This was a lovely podcast! The first two fabrics that you mentioned reminded me of seersucker. The white fabric with navy Shashiko style look might make a sweet summer jacket. I have always loved Marimiko fabrics. I use one for a tablecloth. It was so nice to hear about your trip.

    • @Sarah_Naomi

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yes, now that you mention it, the texture of the first two look just like a seersucker fabric, maybe they in fact are!

    i have the same clover ruler, i bought it in a set and i use all of them a lot when pattern tracing. this small skinny one is useful also in knitting, it fits in my project bag and i can measure lengths on the go. it's so cool to have an everyday object as a souvenir, that you use regularly, to remember a great trip by :)

    Marimekko was so popular in the US up until the mid-1990s (guessing). There was a shop in Southern California that sold it when I was in high school. How fun that you found it!

    I really enjoy your positive spirit, and your interest in Japan. I really like Fukuoka - we go for the sumo in November - but it's great to hear about these other Kyushu locations. I really want to try Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Beppu now. How did you travel between cities - train? I would also like to know where I can get a yukata pattern in France / Europe! Thank you for sharing :)

    • @Sarah_Naomi
      @Sarah_Naomi  4 дні тому +1

      Thank you for your kind comment! Oh, the sumo shows in Fukuoka must be so cool to see! We traveled by train with a JR All Kyushu pass and it was perfect for us. There are lots of vendors who sell the exact same yukata pattern I purchased in Fukuoka here in Europe/France. I searched for it really quickly and found it here for example: www.jhinparis.com/patrons-japonais/patron-japonais-yukata
      I hope that helps!

    This was a great video! Thank you for sharing your experiences. I have always wondered about fabric shopping in Japan. When you make the Yukata, will you also find a pattern for the obi?

    • @Sarah_Naomi
      @Sarah_Naomi  8 днів тому

      I'm glad you liked it! And good question; I just checked and I don't think the pattern I purchased included instructions for the obi. There might be, I haven't read through the pattern yet and it's all in Japanese, but if not, I will try and find a pattern for the obi 😊

    Beautiful fabrics and trip!! Thank you for sharing! Sarah, I have a video request: can you do a video on the tools you use? I am specifically interested in your Kai scissors (many people have said they prefer this over a rotary cutter) and I would love to know about the rulers and measuring tools you use, especially if they are in metric measurements! Thank you!

    You found so beautiful fabrics 😍 Aren't fabrics the best souvenirs to bring from a holiday?
    The last fabric is so pretty, can't wait to see, what you will make out of it!
    And thank you for the shop recommendations, the one in Fukuoka is already on my list and Kumamoto will now be added. I have the impression, that they have a lot more patterned linen fabrics then you can find in Europe, do you agree?

    • @Sarah_Naomi
      @Sarah_Naomi  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I agree! I love fabrics as souvenirs and I'm glad Torai Amu and Kumamoto are on your to-see list! I wouldn't say they had more patterned linen fabric (I can find quite a lot here in Paris, which is perhaps an exception), but I did notice that the majority of the fabrics on offer in the shops were made with natural fibers, which I love to see 😊

    Bonjour Sarah, le Japon est un pays fantastique 🤩
    J’y étais en même temps que toi. J’ai acheté un superbe coton chez Mihama à Tokyo grâce à tes recommandations. 😊
    Il serait parfait pour ton patron de Yukata. J’ai aussi vu et toucher les sublimes tissus de Nani Iro.
    Peut-être que je me lasserai tenter dans la future. Ils sont disponibles chez Eweknit à Toronto.
    Merci de nous partager tes belles aventures d’arts textiles. ❤️

    Japan has a long history of loving Finnish things and vice versa. I'm pretty sure that Uniqlo has done collabs with Marimekko and Moomins because of that not vice versa.
