Jimbocho bookstores are all located along the south side of the main street, facing to north. The reason is obvious, they are avoiding the sunlight. In the opposite side there used to be bunch of curry rice shops, whose prices are inexpensive since this area was originally for college students looking for their books.
As a homeschooled brat I used to love going into university bookshops and browsing all of the academic titles. Are there still academic book shops around Jimbocho? Not that it would do me much good given I don’t read Japanese.
YES! I raised an eyebrow when I first learned about this Japanese stationary obsession online...all these shopping vlogs in stationary stores etc. And then of course I went to Japan and the big ol' penny dropped: I was comparing the IDEA of Japanese stationary to my Western experiences thus far. I couldn't believe what I was seeing over there. Exquisite stuff that I never even knew I wanted until I saw it. The Guinness World Record for 'darkest black ink' is a Japanese pen. The smoothest ball point pens in the world with the finest tip are Japanese for the obvious reason that if you have to write that language on a small area you NEED to have both a superfine pen AND one that doesn't smudge and blur. Every aesthetic is covered in the mix of the practical too with so many hidden artisanal 'niche' stationary stores. Thank you inadvertently for reminding me to keep working overtime so I can indulge myself wildly on my next trip. I wish the same for you too Marco! 📝🖊✏📔📓📎✌😃
I knew about this place because of my recent reads "DAYS AT THE MORISAKI BOOKSHOP" I wander if the place that was said in the story exist and it sure does. What a wonderful place for readers!!
Wow love the washi! I would end up a pauper if I had those wonderful shops around me. Thank you so much for your detailed explanations as well. This truly sets your channel apart 👍
I was in Japan about 3 weeks ago and I visited Hara Shobo. The lady in the shop was really nice and taught me a lot of history about several woodblock prints. Afterwards she showed me some new woodblock prints that came in the day before and that were not yet posted on the website. So after looking through them I found one that I like, it was really expensive but I bought it anyway. It will always be a great memory for me of my awesome vacation in Japan. I highly recommend you visit this shop!
@@tokyotique I hope to visit Japan one day (watching your videos, I can see that I might have to bring a spare suitcase to bring things back in! 😂) For anyone who is, like me, stuck in London and 'travelling' around Japan vicariously through youtube, there is an amazing shop called Shepherds in Pimlico that stocks a variety of good quality, Japanese papers. Oooh I've never visited NY! Bet there are some amazing treasures at flea markets over there. Arigato gozaimasu for watching the video🥰

Nice that all the jimbocho you review are in close proximity to each other, and you are reviewing smaller independent shops. Good to support the small businesses. This is THE my favorite spot in Tokyo. I did a few times already, just spent a day there, good coffee shops in this area in case tired and yet more bookstores to browse, lunch? Many moderate good restaurants in walking distance.
Thanks for yet another wonderful and informative video tour. I’d love you to do one on Kakejiku/Kakemono sometime. They seem few and far between with really low quality reproductions, damaged or worn/torn pieces, to newer quality repos purchased from the likes of galleries and museums. I see a fair few in flea markets videos I have seen and believe that some of the Bookoff Super Bazaars have them (I love watching your visits there!)?
Thank you so much! You can sometimes find Kakejiku at at Oi Keibajyo Flea, mainly with calligraphy rather than illustrations. They're really hard to unravel and film though (I've tried😅). Hope to find some displayed unravelled and hanging up sometime. Appreciate you letting me know your interests!😊
Am going to Japan for the first time in a few months and honestly am feeling kind of overwhelmed- will have to check this area out. I feel looking at things from the past very grounding. Wonderful video 😊
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment😊Rather than a jam-packed itinerary, I recommend you just have 2 to 3 things you'd like to do per day for Tokyo. The trains/metro systems are really easy to navigate (after your first day😉). I'm sure a wonderful adventure awaits for you in Japan! Have a great time🎶
Thank you so much for this very informative video. 🙇🏻♀ I only new Ukiyo-e . I really love Japanese aesthetics, arts, crafts, etc and all types of japanese woodblock prints look amazing to me. This is fascinating, because I always was interested in different methods of block printing, and took many classes - the West Coast printmakers of Arts and Crafts were strongly influenced by Japanese methods, even if the style itself was different. I definitely would like to check out the art tools place! Fascinating video! Thanks
Oh how cool you took class in printing! Hope you can put Jimbocho on your itinerary when you visit Japan😊Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!🥰

Thank you so much for this! 🤩It's so informative and you're very well-versed with Japanese art and places to visit in Jinbocho. I've been living in Tokyo for a few years now and I've been wanting to visit Jinbocho as a stationery and book lover, but I don't know where to start or which places are a must visit. Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment!😊Unfortunately filming is not allowed in there (there's a big sign as soon as you enter😅). Hope you can visit it some day!
Some of those prices are crazy cheap for handmade woodblock prints.. they take a huge amount of skilled work to produce. I’ll have to pick some up next time I’m in Japan.
Awesome vid, luv Japanese Prints, Artwork. Thanks for the location of the Jimbocho Area, I'll be back in Tokyo in Mid November so I will definitely check it out.🙂
@@tokyotique sure! I also want to check out nearby Ochanomizu for the music instruments. Can't believe it's been already 16 years since I last went there
@@tokyotique perhaps you could conduct a paid private tour for likeminded people who need a local guide to take them on specific tours like this 😊 speaking for myself who wouldn’t mind one when i next visit japan
Aw, thank you so much for your encouraging words!😍Coincidence but I'm currently working on creating tour itineraries related to thrifting/antiquing as it's something I enjoy myself!🤩My guiding niche and experience has mainly been food and history, ranging from one day walking tours in Tokyo to multiple day large group tours across Japan. I was away a lot last year so decided to take a break from guiding, start this channel and put together tours that differ from what's already out there. So your comment really meant a lot✨Thank you again!🥰Hope to have a tour that will be of interest to you for your next visit😊
Thank you so much for watching and your kind comment😊I’m half Japanese and from Tokyo so it’s kind of a combination of what I already know and further research✨
"Nature calls" 🤣 deliberate or Japlish do you think? Loved your sakura tree print🌸! And I was momentarily concerned that there were no crane prints - but not to worry, you had it covered😀. Nice video as always!
Thank you so much!🥰Yeeeesss, had to pick up some cranes!😂You know, I think the "Nature Calls" book may have been a Western publication and maybe my mind amusing itself...🤣
I ran out of time to visit this area on my last trip but the more videos I see the more I wince at how much I missed out on. One doesn't need to be able to read Japanese text with advanced proficiency in order to find really, really interesting things to buy in 'booktown'. There's art, movie posters, vintage graphics and everything in between. Thank you so much for this ravishingly lovely video, filled with a constant stream of inspiration for my next adventure in Tokyo. You did a fantastic job. 🤩👍
Loved every second of it, and certainly appreciate your sharing your obviously vast knowledge of Japanese arts and culture with us. Loved learning about Shikō Munakata -- wonderful creative work. Very sad to read that his house and most of his pre-1945 woodblocks were destroyed during the war. And fellow stationery addict here. I think I have enough to drop a note to the citizens of a country or two. :)
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment. Love Munakata’s creativity too. Such originality! If you’re a stationery enthusiast a visit to Tokyo is a must😊🎵
Thanks for watching. My content is about thrifting second hand, vintage, antique and flea markets with some introduction to certain areas in and around Tokyo…so much as I love stationery it’s unlikely I’ll make a video dedicated to that. Thank you for the suggestion though😊
I stayed at th APA hotel in jimbocho the last time i went to tokyo and it was books heaven to me. Also, try different kissaten (retro cafés). Good video 😎
@@tokyotique I went to the Shueisha buildind because i heard there was a shonen jump gallery to visit, but it was closed because of covid 🥲. I wonder if it's open now.
When I lived in Japan I loved wandering around Jimbocho. Picked up quite a few woodblock prints and stationary. Is the Jimbocho Theatre still open? I saw many classic Showa area movies there by Japanese Masters like Naruse Mikio, Shimizu Hiroshi, Ichikawa Kon.
Yes the Jimbocho Theater is still there. Did think about featuring it but as my content is more shopping/thrifting/antiquing-related I cut the footage out😅Hope the video brought back some natsukashii memories for you!😊
@@tokyotique I found it by chance: it's Golden Pheasant with Pine Cones in Snow by Hiroshige. Thank you for the great episode. I just discovered your channel yesterday. Have you done an episode focussing on fountain pens and stationery? That would be yummy!
Glad you found out the info on the print😊The content for this channel is in the main thrifting second hand, vintage, flea and antique markets with the occasional area walk (but still with a shopping slant)…so much as I love stationery it’s unlikely I’ll be making a video solely on that. For now anyhow. Thanks for watching and the suggestion though!🥰
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment😊Hope you can add Jimbocho to your itinerary when you visit. I’m from Tokyo so not familiar enough with Kyoto to answer your question😅
Thanks for watching and for your comment😊The prices are already in yen, either on the products or on any signage! You can work it out in your own currency from there✨
Hi there, specifically which ones are you referring to? Some are woodblock, some are regular printing press. Usually the price will indicate which you're getting, but some in this video are vintage woodblock prints regardless of the low price😊Best to double check with the vendor when you visit if you're not sure. All the best✨
There are hanko shops all over Tokyo so you shouldn't have a problem finding one near where you're staying. If you Google "Tokyo Hanko" there's a website that lists hanko shops in Tokyo.

Amazing! All of my favourite topics, books, posters, dolls and Japanese art❤❤ thankyou so much,I learn so much from you, beautiful 😍 x
Thank you so much!✨So happy you enjoyed all the places we visited and all the items!😍
Oh I would love to go antique shopping in Japan.
Hope you can visit sometime!😊
Thank you for a lovely tour of all the Wonderful shops. I was hopping you were going to get some shots of the Ohya Shbo Edo Period Ukioye.
Just fascinating subject matter.
Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment!😊Unfortunately filming is not allowed in there (there's a big sign as soon as you enter😅). Hope you can visit it some day!
Kanda/Jimbocho area is a hidden gem that is mostly frequented by the locals. Thanks for the upload and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Tokyo.
Thank you for watching and enjoy visiting the area when you’re next in town!😊
Some of those prices are crazy cheap for handmade woodblock prints.. they take a huge amount of skilled work to produce. I’ll have to pick some up next time I’m in Japan.
Always bargains to be found if you know where to look😊Hope you find some prints you like when you’re next in Japan!✨
Awesome vid, luv Japanese Prints, Artwork. Thanks for the location of the Jimbocho Area, I'll be back in Tokyo in Mid November so I will definitely check it out.🙂
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment😊Hope you can add Jimbocho to your itinerary and explore it when you're here in November!✨
Going to Tokyo next year, will make sure to visit! My wife is gonna love these.
Have a great time checking the area out😊
@@tokyotique sure! I also want to check out nearby Ochanomizu for the music instruments. Can't believe it's been already 16 years since I last went there
Wow thanks for taking me along on your beautiful video I can't wait to go to Japan
Thank you so much for the watching and for your lovely comment😊Hope you can visit Japan soon!🎵
I enjoyed this walk through and how clear your introduction to the art is 😊
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!😊Glad you enjoyed the walk through Jimbocho!🥰🎶
@@tokyotique yes, i will definitely consider when i go to Japan 😊
I will contact you 👌 i am a Singaporean 😊
It is interesting that there are many buildings in this area, known as pencil buildings, that have bookstores and curry shops that offer easy cooking.
Hope you can visit sometime! Thanks for watching and for your comment😊
Love the video🎉
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!😊
This is cool, thanks for sharing mokuhanga with your followers. I'm frequently asked about spots to buy prints so I'm gonna like them you vid!
Oh awesome! Glad the video was useful!😊Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!🎵
So much details and information, Thanks for the video. How did you learn so much? What did you study in unversity?
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!🥰Hope you can explore the area next time you're visiting and find some wonderful treasures!😊
I just unlocked a whole other place to dream about going to
Hope you can visit sometime! Thank you for watching and for your comment😊
Thank you for such amazing videos!! I'm planning my trip and this video is exactly what I've been looking for!
Thank you so much!🤩Hope you can add Jimbocho to your Tokyo itinerary!🥰
Loved every second of it, and certainly appreciate your sharing your obviously vast knowledge of Japanese arts and culture with us. Loved learning about Shikō Munakata -- wonderful creative work. Very sad to read that his house and most of his pre-1945 woodblocks were destroyed during the war. And fellow stationery addict here. I think I have enough to drop a note to the citizens of a country or two. :)
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment. Love Munakata’s creativity too. Such originality! If you’re a stationery enthusiast a visit to Tokyo is a must😊🎵
Omg loving this video and content. I’m going in November so thanks for the tips!
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment! Glad the content is of use and hope you have an amazing time visiting this November😊
Great content. May I ask youto prepare more videos about stationaries such as pen and pencils.
Thanks for watching. My content is about thrifting second hand, vintage, antique and flea markets with some introduction to certain areas in and around Tokyo…so much as I love stationery it’s unlikely I’ll make a video dedicated to that. Thank you for the suggestion though😊
awesome video ! I find it very intriguing thus i must ask, how one shall educate themselves about these historic and cultural relic ? Thank you.
Thank you for watching. Personally I research by reading mainly!😊
this is the freaking paradise, jesus
Haha!😂Thank you so much for watching! Hope you can visit Jimbocho sometime😊
I'm dying to come to this neighborhood and shop! Too bad we don't have a lot of wall space left!
Ahhh, maybe just one more print to add to a gallery wall?😊Hope you can check out this area when you visit Tokyo!
I stayed at th APA hotel in jimbocho the last time i went to tokyo and it was books heaven to me. Also, try different kissaten (retro cafés). Good video 😎
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed when you visited the area😊

Thank you for watching and for your comment😊
Jashin-chan Dropkick anime brought me here 😊
Nice!😊🎶
Wonder if I would have missed this area without this video showing in my feed. Let's see if the wallet can withstand Ohya Shobo.
Hope you had an enjoyable time checking out Jimbocho and Ohya Shodo! Thank you so much for watching😊
hey there, thank you for sharing this video, any shop recommendation to look for old automotive books and things like that?
Thank you for watching! I’m afraid I’m not aware of where they sell books of that genre😅
Sold in the basement of the "TOKYO ASSOCIATION OF DEALERS IN OLD BOOKS"= (東京都
古書籍商業協同組合)

i would like to own an original ukiyo-e print, how much does an original costs by a new artists ? and where can i buy it ?
Apologies I don't know!
Do you know the name of the print at 1:25 showing a colorful phoenix or peacock on a branch?
No I don’t know the name of it🤔
@@tokyotique I found it by chance: it's Golden Pheasant with Pine Cones in Snow by Hiroshige.
Well done video. I'll be sure to visit Jinbocho next time I'm in Tokyo. I presume there's also a similar district in Kyoto as well?
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment😊Hope you can add Jimbocho to your itinerary when you visit. I’m from Tokyo so not familiar enough with Kyoto to answer your question😅
❤
🥰
Nice video thx for posting. Could I humbly suggest to just leave prices in yen unless of course ur viewers are 90% Americans :)
Thanks for watching and for your comment😊The prices are already in yen, either on the products or on any signage! You can work it out in your own currency from there✨
Are the prices in yen or dollars?
Thanks for watching! Please refer to the description box under the video😊
Are those "handmade" woodblock prints, or copied reproductions?
Hi there, specifically which ones are you referring to? Some are woodblock, some are regular printing press. Usually the price will indicate which you're getting, but some in this video are vintage woodblock prints regardless of the low price😊Best to double check with the vendor when you visit if you're not sure. All the best✨
where to get hanko ?
There are hanko shops all over Tokyo so you shouldn't have a problem finding one near where you're staying. If you Google "Tokyo Hanko" there's a website that lists hanko shops in Tokyo.
