    One thing not mentioned here that I think is a mistake in this game is that it has both more party members than can be used at once and also a job system, it just feel overloaded since they overlap too much. Multiple party members with distinct classes serves the same purpose as having a job system, not to mention how late the job system comes into play. I don't like to compare Dragon Quest with Final Fantasy but FF 3 and 5 did it much better since the jobs were available to switch between after just once dungeon (well the first act in FF 3 but still very early on) and if we're just going to compare Dragon Quest VI to other Dragon Quest games, DQ 3 and 9 let you pick jobs from the get go and even though job switching wasn't available until later it at least let you work on the starting jobs from the start, on that note DQ 7 has the same problem with its job system. GQ 6 is interesting in its failures but I do only recommend it to Dragon Quest completionists or people looking to design JRPGs since a big book of "don'ts" is a useful tool

      No, you're failing to account for the possibility of swapping characters in and out of battles to take advantage of different vocations _within_ the same battle. Rarely is this needed, but just the fact that you can do that is really cool. Even if you never swap characters, it's still nice having the option to have different characters on different vocations. It's not like you _need_ to use them all, but it's still nice to have.
      I feel DQ6 is one of the best games in the series, and the best of the Zenithia trilogy. Some reasons why:
      • I generally prefer the Zenithia trilogy over the Erdrick trilogy, just because they feel more advanced and modern (at least the DS remakes)
      • I liked it more than 4 because you follow the same characters throughout, rather than jumping between different ones in each chapter (although I also love 4 in its own right)
      • I liked it more than 5 because it emphasizes human characters rather than monster recruiting. I appreciate that 5 invented the monster recruiting mechanic in RPGs, but I honestly don’t care for that and prefer to use a core group of human characters throughout. (Needless to say, 5 is still an amazing game for lots of reasons.)
      • I liked it more than 7 because, while 6 is a bigger and longer game than 1-5, it’s still relatively streamlined compared to 7, which actually feels tedious at times. I feel 6 strikes the perfect balance for length and content. (However, the 3DS remake of 7 fixed some of the tedium and was more enjoyable for me.)
      • I liked it more than 9 because, while there is a vocation system, there are also characters with actual backstories and personalities written for them, rather than the completely anonymous player-creations in 9. Also I felt like 9 was designed more for the multi-player experience, which I never got to take advantage of. (I haven’t played 9 since 2010, so I plan on replaying it soon.)
      • Just the fact that is has a vocation system is an advantage over all the games that don’t have a vocation system, because I love RPGs with job/class systems. And I prefer the way it was done in 6/7 over the style of 3/9.

      @@ArcadianGenesis GC's right, you're freaking insane. Regardless of your arguments 6 is a massive slog even before vocations are unlocked. If you like it that's fine but it is *not* one of the best DQs in the series

    • @ArcadianGenesis
      @ArcadianGenesis Рік тому +4

      @@wilsonkierankitsune Lol, I'm insane for liking a slightly different game from you? What a bizarre thing to say. All DQ games are fundamentally similar, so if you like one, you should like them all. I gave you a list of reasons for preferring 6 over others in the series, and I left a comment on the video with additional reasons why I liked the game. Do these look like the rantings of a psychiatric patient to you?
      I literally just finished playing the game yesterday, so it's very fresh on my mind, which makes my opinion arguably more meaningful than one based on a distant memory. Go back and play it again, and maybe you'll gain a new appreciation. After putting 55 hours into 6, I can confidently say it's in my top 3 DQ games. The only ones I liked more were 8 and 11.
      There is no right or wrong when it comes to personal rankings, but you guys are wrong to think 6 is "objectively" inferior. I'm providing a defense backed up with reasoning. If you thought 6 was a slog, for example, you'd _have_ to say 7 is even more of a slog to be logically consistent.
      I know 6 is commonly overlooked by fans of the series, so I'm here to give my uncommon take that it's an underrated gem. Even if you disagree, you gotta respect a unique comment when you see one. At least I'm not merely repeating the same view you've seen a thousand times before.

    To answer your question on why people can access the dream world in this game: It's because of Archfiend he connected them when they aren't meant to be connected by taking over Zenithia. Didn't you notice the two worlds become completely disconnected after you beat the final boss during the ending sequences?

  • @RockRage8962

    I know this review is old, but one interesting thing that dataminers found in the DS remakes is that DQ5 and DQ6 had the same enemy encounter rate. It just felt like it happened more in DQ6 due to the amount of reused enemy designs. Also, DQ4's enemy encounter rate was lower than intended in the DS remake, but was corrected for the mobile port, which also reimplemented the party chat which was absent from the DS remake of 4. DQ6 has it's flaws, yet it also introduced a lot of good things the series would use for future titles to come. I don't entirely blame Heartbeat for the shortcomings. Yuji Hori did admit 6 wasn't as good as it could have been, and largely due to his absence during development of DQ6, and the fact most of his time was spent focusing on Chrono Trigger during that time. DQ6 was more a victim of circumstance than outright incompetence. I still enjoy it for what it introduced, and if the Zenithian trilogy get another set of remakes in the future, hopefully 6 will get the treatment it needs to become something far greater than what the DS remakes did for the trilogy as a whole.

    • @GCVazquez

      I would love it if 6 got a redo, but honestly I'd just want the series to move on instead of trying to correct it's one contested mistake. I can't really remember what I wrote for this video, but given how different my way of seeing things are, I'm pretty sure I went the wrong direction with it. I still stand on 6 being poopy, but of course being the worst Dragon Quest game just means you're not as good as the other DQ games.

    As someone who played Dragon warrior monsters before playing this game, and overplaying that game when I was younger, I was so hyped in this game when I found out Terry was in it. It felt like a continuation, and seeing that I could recruit him, and seeing that one general, who was a boss in Dragon warrior monsters? It was so hype for me.

  • @TheIcecypher
    @TheIcecypher 11 місяців тому +1

    I think there were mentions of the last boss in towns way before the end. Perhaps only few people talked about him, but they did brought him up.
    As for the lesser Demon Lords, at least for Jamirus we could see his influence in a town before battling him. I don't remember if Grakos is mentioned by the mermaids or in one of the coastal towns.
    The people on the Dream World are not only dream versions of actual people. (I mean, what that person sees himself as when he dreams.) They can also be dreamed by someone else, or be remnants of themselves after death, like a certain red-haired character who no longer has a counterpart in the real world. Remember that the more physical manifestation of the Dream World was an aberration caused by the big boss. It was never meant to be so connected to the other world like that. Remember how the young king ended up being the real world's queen? Or how the "demon lord" was actually the king? All this while other people were idealized versions of their waking selves, or memories kept alive in dreams of things that could have been, or repeating nightmares of the last moments of an entire kingdom that perished at the hands of a powerful demon.
    Nothing that happens in the Dream World has to adhere to a consistent rule of what happens somewhere else in the Dream World. It could be physically accessible due to the big bad's manipulations, but it is still just based on whatever can happen in dreams, not of one person, but of the entire world. Floating island and flying bed? Expecting it to be like a normal world is where things go sour. Just enjoy the three worlds and be amazed at what you find in the collective dreams of the entire population.

    This was the first Dragon Quest I actually played through and completed (I tried IX and 1 but couldn't really get into as well as this one) and I absolutely loved it. I will admit I got annoyed wandering world trying to find out what to do next but I also felt like the game encouraged you to go out and explore to find new things and any time I did, I felt very satisfied. I enjoyed the sub-plots and events that happened throughout the game too. Like: the introduction to Terry, the Isle o Smiles, Snowhere, and a lot more. Also, I REALLY don't get what you mean when you say that the dungeons were long. No they fuck they weren't. I know I sound mean but legit THEY WEREN'T! And this is coming from someone who plays a lot of JRPGs. I never felt like they overstayed they're welcome. They were just about the right length. Except for maybe 1 or 2.

    Dragon Quest VI is one of my favorite games in the series. Having only finished the game last year, it's still fresh in my mind. Personally I think a lot of the complains within this video are a little too nit-picky. I definitely agree with the enemy variety being highly boring, and that's my biggest complaint. But the game is about an adventure, and quite literally finding yourself. You're dropped into a world with little to no direction about yourself and the world you're in. Within the journey you meet friends, and have self-discovery. The characters show a very genuine bond within the party chat and are incredibly memorable in my opinion. My closest friend and I still even make jokes about Carver to this day. The dungeon progression I found to be similar to what is expected in ever DQ game, and I found it to be more diverse than some games, i.e. VII. The towns I found to have a ton of fun and memorable self contained stories, so that comparison to Dragon Quest III felt like very strange as well. The class system I found to be very fun, but definitely grindy as you said, but that's a trend that doesnt stop in the series at all, so I give it a pass. Plus making Milly a dragon to kill Mortemor was hilarious in my playthrough. I find the game to feel more like a personal adventure than a lot of games in the series. It was exciting to explore new place for the fact that I'd be able to see the dream world version of them or vice versa, and the whole two realms mechanic was very refreshing and done well. Collecting things like the Zenithian Armor just by doing exploration felt very fresh and open as well. And not to mention going into every new town just got me excited to see what my party said about every NPC. The whole game feels very different in tone than other DQ games, and that's why I find it to be so enjoyable. I think stating that it is a bad game with a lot of polish is incredibly harsh, because it isn't a bad game by any means. The whole game is not perfect, but it's definitely a really enjoyable and memorable experience. What other game do you start as someone's dream only to halfway through find out you were a prince the whole time? Overall, I feel like everyone complains about this game too much and doesn't give it any of the praise it actually deserves. Also that joke at the end stigmatizing mental disorders and saying fans of DQ VI are crazy was childish and distasteful.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  6 років тому +13

      Samuel Cridland I'm glad you enjoyed it! Lots of people have written in to say likewise, but I enjoy that you found your own takeaway from the game that meant something to you.
      I'd like to clarify: I'm not stigmatizing mental disorders. The preface to the joke is made in the case that me calling the guy crazy is offensive due to the unknown knowledge of that person having a mental disorder, since calling someone with a mental disorder "crazy" is indeed, highly offensive.
      I didn't want to make the joke and have that be the case, hence the qualification before the joke is made. Though in hindsight I probably should have just called him crazy and avoided being thoughtful about it altogether.

      GC Positive I completely understand that everyone views games differently, and I more wanted to share my two cents on how I find this game to be special and that if you ever find it in yourself to replay it to possibly look at it differently. Just that remark at the end that I found distasteful myself was kind of a tipping point so I was a little more rude than I'd like. We all make mistakes or come off different than we expect though, so no worries. Hell, this is an old ass video anyways. I've been watching the whole retrospective and I overall have enjoyed myself, but I found this video disappointing compared to the rest is all. Definitely keep it up though, there aren't enough people on UA-cam who talk about Dragon Quest afterall.

      I'm another fan of VI, and I really agree with all of your points. Just one other thing that bears mentioning, I think, is how much of a giant leap forward aesthetically DQVI was over V in their original versions. It's kind of a shame that they both look identical graphically on the DS, because I really can't emphasize enough how much raw pleasure and fun was added to the series by this game and its fully animated enemies and general excellent use of the SNES hardware, unlike V which looked like a higher resolution NES game. I played all of the DQ games released up till then as a teenager out of curiosity and with VII being announced, emulated (and cheating with savestates for DQ2 because fuck that game), and while III, IV, and V are all wonderful games with more personal stories than VI (although the thing is, with all the praise of V especially, from my perspective I'm generally not looking to Dragon Quest for emotionally affecting stories and characters... that really has never been a focus of the series, to me anyway), VI was the game that gave me by far the most fun experience actually playing through it. The graphics and music were utterly gorgeous, the opening is one of the coolest and most mysteriously fascinating I've ever encountered in a JRPG, and the Dream World mechanic made exploring the world and talking to NPCs about 10 times more interesting than in any other game in the series... and then there's the Job system, which is incredibly fun and brilliant, and gives the game lots of nonlinear freedom and potential replay value. What can I say, I just adore Dragon Quest VI, and it is a shame that most opinions on it to be found online are very negative for reasons that honestly baffle me, and seem almost universally nit-picky. I would really suggest checking out the original versions of V and VI via emulator for anyone who is curious; the difference is shocking

    I don't get the point about the big bad demon lord showing up late in the game.
    Malroth wasn't even present. He was only mentioned briefly throughout the game and he was summoned 5 minutes before the game ended.
    Zoma was just a voice. Nothing else. You only saw him once he got up from his throne to greet you personally.
    Nimzo was also only mentioned by npcs, because he spend the game doing nothing.
    It is a typical trope for dragon quest to hide his main antagonist behind his minions. The only difference is, that Mortamor was intelligent enough to employ more than one.

    I must say im torn appart, playing the snes version on an emulator, love the aesthetics and with regulary speed ups, the battles etc take just seconds. Story/Worldbuilding wise i like that everthing is vage and undefined but those small quests per town are just boring, watching those scripet events, would be even more interesting if one just get to send out and slay monsters.

    This game ushered in the new era of DQ...
    Both good and bad.
    I personally like VI quite a bit.
    The characters were best in the series up to that point (sans Deborah).
    The job class system was better designed than 3(as it should have been with time, not knocking 3)
    The characters themselves fit into that system well if you want a streamlined experience. (To match the feeling of DQ4s characters with roles)
    - MC to Hero class
    - Carver to Gladiator
    - Ashlynn to Sage
    Etc.
    But for the crazies who wanted to grind out super characters... the possibility was there while not being at all a requirement.
    The dungeons “dead ends” were more organic than ever before... The NES games had worse design which was of course to make you grind more or straight up to waste your resources in an effort to kill you. The series is basically famous for this haha. It’s still here in 6 but not nearly as bad as predecessors.
    (5 not as bad an offender as well)
    The world being large and complex is a plus for me... in some ways.
    (More exploring and the feeling of earning that progression like in 2)
    But it fails in many others...
    Like i get the wells but.... Stairs? Has nobody else noticed these?!
    Plus, while i love areas being gated off until better modes of transportation are available..... this game had a bit too much of that for a double world game that already has pacing issues.
    Like seriously the flying bed is cool but did we need that with a ship, and a sub, and a magic carpet, and a flying animal....
    (A good example is actually FF7... Buggy-> Tiny Bronco-> Highwind-> Colored Chocobos)
    So while it definitely has its issues...
    I feel it offers a better version of any game before it mechanically.
    (It’s like if they smashed 3 and 4 together really)
    While also being the torch pass into what the series would become.
    (With things like items/equips or even things like story - think 8s ending building on this one-)

    Us old gamers who played Dragon Quest on NES enjoyed being tortured and looked at it as a challenge. Most sane people would give up and move on, but not us. That's why we moved on to games like Everquest eventually. I actually didn't play Dragon Quest 6 or 9 yet. I've played all the others. I do enjoy random battles though. It's was interesting trying to make it through certain places when you got a random battle every few steps. My first experience with the Dragon Quest switching classes was in Dragon Quest 7 many years after it was released and I didn't enjoy that much. I'm more in it for the stories, art, music, and adventuring.

    Great video, but I kind of disagree. The job system in this just absorbed a lot of my time. I decided to play through all the DQ games once lockdown started and just finished the series a week or two ago. This ranks as probably my third favorite, especially playing them in order as you can see how it evolves from the other ones. I also like that it remedied the situation of both selecting jobs and having characters that maintained deep personal stories despite gameplay shifts. The dream world was a bit lazy, but magic in DQ isn't always consistent so I gave it more of a pass than I normally would. I still liked 11 and 9 more, but I just had so much fun with this one. I liked the longer dungeons as it reminded me of the earlier games where resource management is the biggest overall threat.

    One of the biggest problems in this review is that it seems to handles the highly modified DS remake almost exclusively. The original Japanese SFC had much nicer graphics instead of the more generic DS engine they used for all DQ game remakes on the system. The encounter rates are different etc etc. You can't review DQ6 and pretend a lesser port is representative of the actual original game.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  2 роки тому +2

      Fair enough! But my issues extend far past the encounter rates, and I don't even bring up the Artstyle as an issue with it. I don't think the vastly outdated originals of these games hold up particularly well either, so the DS was literally the best shot 6 had with me.

    It was quiet awhile since I've played DQ6 DS. It was back then when I only started to get into this series and and after completing DQ4 DS I skipped DQ5 DS for DQ7 PS1. After completing DQ7 I still tried some more DQs before finally getting to DQ6 DS. And a journey for majority was really smooth for me. I never had a problem knowing what to do next or where to go. Like in previous DQs I always talk with every NPC and party chat after every dialog or event so I always was informed on various stuff. The class system was easy to get into since it's almost the same as in DQ7. Enemy recolours didn't really bother me as most of DQ encounter designs tends to reuse enemies in early points of adventure so the more you progress the more varied they will be. Dungeons was alright.
    What I didn't liked is how there is so many characters to have. I did not get Amos when I decided to tell him the truth, so until Murdaw I only had 5 characters and I didn't bothered leveling Nevan. And suddenly my go to mage Ashlynn was like "I don't feel like fighting big demon so I'll sit this one through." made me suffer fighting the boss. And I know people like Terry, but we get him so late in the game I simply have no place for him. Maybe if he had unique weapon and armor set like Psaro in DQ4 remake I would swap Carver for him, but in the end my main party was Hero, Carver, Milly and Ashlynn and enjoyed those characters the most.
    After completing main quest I couldn't decide if this was my favorite in the series or DQ7. High encounter rate was certainly a problem for me, but not a dealbreaker since I understand it's a remake of an old game. Now DQ7 was remade with almost no random encounters, but there is other reasons why in the end I decided that Dragon Quest 6 my favorite in the series so far. And I've played every numbered Dragon Quest up to XI with the exception of X and I still like DQ6 the best followed with DQ7 and DQ1 while the popular ones at the bottom of my list. Like always I like the most what most people hate...

    Of all of these earlier games in the series, I think 5 is my favorite. But despite the issues it has, I really enjoyed 6. I do think it would have benefited from having the job system introduced way earlier in the game, and having more self contained storylines would have been nice. Even if it was like "Find village in the real world, learn that there is a problem, go to the dream world village to find out how to solve it, go back to the real world to solve it." repeated 47 times it would have been better than "Go to this village, solve half a problem, don't get told anything, randomly stumble onto the solution to the rest of the problem 6 hours later because nobody told you this mountain has magic seeds that restore sanity on it, but your party thinks they told you. Are you insane? Are you losing your memory? Or did the developers not put the clue in the game? Nobody knows anymore!

      @@GCVazquez just rolled credits on this one for the first time and I have some thoughts. Overall, I liked it a lot, especially the music, visuals, and dual world design. The characters are visually compelling and pretty memorable (with the exception of Nevan who just didn't need to exist).
      Many of your points are valid though, especially the stupid high encounter rate and reused enemies over and over. I swear that same gargoyle showed up in literally every dungeon. The jobs need a stupid amount of grinding, and I finished at level 39 having never even gotten the Hero class. Also, figuring out where to go post-Murdaw is impossible without a guide, or at least it was for me bc I have fuck all patience to figure it out. This didn't bother me too much, but if you're someone who doesn't like looking up help then I imagine it would be very frustrating.
      VII is the superior game but this one definitely laid out the groundwork for what they were going for, and I think it mostly succeeds. Personally, it's far more interesting than IV, and is barely talked about in comparison.

    So I just finished DQ6, and I absolutely loved it. You had a lot of complaints, but I feel like none of that stuff actually _matters._ None of the things you complained about actually detracted from my _enjoyment_ of the game, which is the only thing that ultimately matters.
    A few reasons why I love DQ6:
    • The vocation system
    • The dream-like themes and atmosphere of the game
    • The graphics and animations in some of the cutscenes were actually really cool and impressive compared to previous games in the series.
    • The variety of methods for traversing the world. There are so many unique ways to explore the overworld like the flying bed, magic carpet, and Pegasus.
    • The variety of worlds to explore. There’s the real world, the dream world, the dread realm - and you can even go under the ocean to find secrets there!
    • The final battle with Mortamor was incredibly epic and tense. I can’t remember the last time I felt so satisfied for beating a final boss in a turn-based RPG. I had to do some level/vocation grinding for it, but I also had to use actual strategy by swapping out party members during the battle and ranking up specific vocations just for that battle. I used two Dragons to take out the hands within one turn of each other, and then I subbed in Ashlynn just to use Magic Burst as a last gasp effort to take out the head - which I did with just a few turns left before I ran out of MP. And it worked!
    One caveat is that I did play the game with a walkthrough because I was trying to finish it in time for TotK. I can imagine it would've been a lot more confusing had I not used a walkthrough. But honestly, that would be true of _all_ Dragon Quest games (especially 7), and most RPGs in general. That's why walkthroughs exist.

      I would agree with you, but DQVI recycles enemies within it's own boundaries way more than the other entries. With other Dragon Quests you might get enemies with a total of 3 color schemes in large quantities- but they're supplemented by tons of other interesting monster designs. VI lacks good monsters, AND reuses the bad ones.

      @hendrikkranen662 6 років тому

    I just finished Dragon Quest VI, after playing DQ IV and V... And although it had a ton of awesome ideas, and I did have some fun with it... I feel like all your criticisms are true, and they hold me from loving this game as much as IV and V. So many good moments, but... It really felt like a weird and bogged down version of Chrono Trigger at times. Me being a huge fan of Chrono Trigger and knowing that DQ VI came out in 95 made these comparisons jump out way more easily in my mind too.
    I think my biggest problem overall with the game was the vocation system and how it affected everything else. I generally don't hate random encounters, but DQ VI made me groan with how frequent they were, and how they just seemed like annoyances rather than a challenge, most of the time. The bottom of the sea part of the game almost made me drop it entirely. And although I love the vocations as a concept, the sheer amount of battles you need to master each one just makes it feel like a chore rather than a cool thing to explore.
    Yeah... Fun game (not always, though. The battle with Mortamor can go f*ck itself), but it had a LOT of problems that makes this my least favorite DQ so far (but then again, I only played IV, V and VI so far)

      @@jordankelly4684 oh I agree completely. 2 years is a long time, I’ve now beat the DS version and it’s one of my favourite DQ games :)
