I had played The Near Future (Akira the psychic) chapter on emulator, but then went headfirst into the remake doing an otherwise blind playthrough. The Middle Ages was my favorite chapter and I definitely didn't see the twist coming at the end. The remake does a really good job fully realizing this game IMO.
I've only played the remake, and I loved it. I'm sure the presentation in the remake is better than the original, but I'm curious about the fan-translation's narrative. Did it not explain that each chapter's end boss is an incarnation of the big bad from the final chapter? That's why the heroes are summoned to face him in the end, it isn't random. In the remake, they're all linked with variations on the name "Odio," and there are statues of each one in Odio's sanctum. Were the statues not also in the original version? EDIT: Commented right before the end and there are the statues. Don't get me wrong, nice review. Did you ever play the remake? It has the same issues with certain chapters not having much going on, but its a lot more polished, probably better translated, and there is a more climactic and satisfying ending.
I agree, and I haven't even seen anything about the remake until now. Even in the fan translation, it was pretty obvious that Odio was the antagonistic driving force in each storyline, with you taking him down across the eras delivered through a variety of gameplay mechanics. At worst, he just shows up as the story's boss without much indication that he's coming, but it never really felt like there needed to be more. I'm surprised this is the only comment that actually brings up the fact that the reviewer thinks the stories are too disconnected.
I dunno, a big part of the game for me was making sure characters had full inventories of the best items to carry into the final chapter. It makes a big difference, especially for the robot dude (I forget its name)
Huge fan of this game. Had never played anything like it before. I really liked the robot story, super original and legitimately suspenseful, also really dark too.
Congratulations on your move and new job! Hope that's all going well. Great video as always, looking forward to more! This title feels kind of like a complement to Romancing SaGa and its extremely open structure, while experimenting with the typical JRPG Format in its own way. The distinct stories and protagonists are an inspired choice, and are a bit reminiscent of literary works like 1,001 Arabian Nights or The Canterbury Tales.
This is genuinely my favorite SNES Square game, but then i'm also that guy who listens to the Gerogerigegege unironically. Give me a weird-ass idea over a tried-and-true formula executed to perfection any day~
Your probably know by now seeing as how its been a year, but the Street Fighter reference one plays out like Mega-man. Each of the bosses has 1 move that you can learn that does "Super Effective" damage against them.
Great review, but just for clarification: The evil tribe in the caveman chapter worship the T-Rex. They want the woman so they can sacrifice her and appease him. The guy who you said transformed into the T-Rex was actually just eaten/mauled to death.
I have to ask, watching these chronologically and all, and having come off Alcahest... Are the Super Robot Wars games on the list? 3 and EX are in English fan-translations!
I agree with what DavidVinc says about Live-A-Live. It isn't too great and was kept in Japan for a reason. Wasn't a fan of it when I discovered it back in the day, and not a fan now. Hopefully the remake is better.
Aw man I made the same mistake the first time I played live a live. I started with the ninja chapter and was overwhelmed and put the game down. Came back and played the cowboy chapter and thought oh this is how the game works. Love the game and looking forward to the remake
These ideas ore really damn cool. I have yet to play the remake, but hopefully the remake connects all these cool ideas together. I can understand why this game is only "good" and nothing beyond that, but the ideas in this game is a 10/10 to me even execution of the ideas is a 6 or 7/10.
No hate, but the part in the video where JG complains about how there's no incentive to do extra challenges in this game cos every part is too small and self contained and thus doesn't carry over to, well, anywhere... gave me big Simpsons' "That was an imaginary story, it never REALLY happened" vibes XD.
Rather in my view in the caveman chapter, the ritual leader gets eaten by the horned t-rex-like dinosaur and then you fight rather than him turning into a dinosaur.
Square Enix: Oh no! SmallAnt threatened there will be hell to pay if we don't meet with his demands for the remake! **Months later** SmallAnt: Okay, why did Square Enix send me a restraining order? Jason Graves: Who the hell is SmallAnt and why is he stealing my credit for saving the remake?
Seems like an interesting game for sure but after watching this I don't think I have any interest in playing the remake when it comes out now. Like you said the premise is great but it doesn't seem like there is much tying it all together and I think I'd leave feeling disappointed. Thanks for the review!
Mixed bag all the way. Cowboy and Wrestler were too short to satisfy or leave any real impression. I actively hated the repetitive structure of and bad comedy of the Mecha one. The rest...they're pretty okay. It's only a decent game in the end, but I'm willing to bump it up a point or so into the above average range on novelty value alone.
That singing LMAO 10/10 great video :)

Another awesome video. Just found your channel and am so glad you’re still making new ones! Was always so curious about this one!

Robot is 👍
It’s an anthology and like any anthology, it’s parts are greater than the whole.
You're an anthology!

Great video Jason always look forward to the content
Megaman IS a jrpg because it has hp bar, a menu, boss fights etc.
subscribe. speaking facts
Live a Live kinda reminds me more of Sonic Adventure than Megaman
Password systems, too. Only thing most of the franchise is missing is XP and leveling.
This is genuinely my favorite SNES Square game, but then i'm also that guy who listens to the Gerogerigegege unironically. Give me a weird-ass idea over a tried-and-true formula executed to perfection any day~
Live and Learn has an RPG?! WHAT?!!!
whats the song at 0:45 ? I feel I should know
The boss theme from this game called Megalomania
Your probably know by now seeing as how its been a year, but the Street Fighter reference one plays out like Mega-man. Each of the bosses has 1 move that you can learn that does "Super Effective" damage against them.

Thankfully, the remake made that clearer. 👍

I like the editing on this video, bro! 👏

I loved the Meet the Robinsons intro. Great stuff.
[12:20] These guys have black belts in karaoke.
Did the remake said Right on?
Aw man I made the same mistake the first time I played live a live. I started with the ninja chapter and was overwhelmed and put the game down. Came back and played the cowboy chapter and thought oh this is how the game works. Love the game and looking forward to the remake
The cursor starts on Ninja too.. Thankfully the rest of the game is nowhere near as exhausting

6:38 nice angle

Sorry but after trying the demo I can say with certainty that it doesn't say "Right on!" XDD
I got rid of this one, probably record quick. I liked the idea, and concept, but playing it felt like wasting my time.
I pronounce it Live A Live
Seems like an interesting game for sure but after watching this I don't think I have any interest in playing the remake when it comes out now.

CONGRATS ON 2K 👏

Don't do too much dialog
