    I really enjoyed your video. I just started playing the Dragon Quest series at number 11 and that was early this year (2020). I loved it so much I bought a 3DS and purchased 4-9. I just finished 5 a week prior to watching your video. I'm 51 and have always loved JRPG'S, but Dragon 8 has become my favorite. Loved the video

    I just really got into the Dragon Quest series about 4 years back. I always thought thet looked generic and dull, but boy was I wrong.
    Although each game feels familiar featuring the same style, overall gameplay elements, and enemy characters, they all have something very different unique to each game.
    There's no way I can choose a favorite as they're all different enough and bring something awesome to the table.

      6 or 2 are my favorites which tend to be the black sheep of the series with 9 and 5 a very close second. There's almost no way to choose a game. It really depends on the day. (Shout-out to 11 for the 16-bit mode. I played the whole game in 2d and it was glorious)

    I will admit that when I was a statue, watching the young couple raising a family only to have their son taken from them from them by a demon, and the subsequent years where that ruined the couple's lives, brought me to tears. Had there not been a way to rescue that child in the game, it would have been unforgivable to me.

    I like the comment about 'Victory Laps', I think the first CRPG I remember doing this was Questron on the C64 (which also pioneered skill games for stat-ups and casino games to gain gold. Of course if you won too much you'd be kicked out and the town guard try to murder you for your money but I digress.) where when you won the game you would be treated to multiple sequences praising you, recounting your deeds, making you a Baron of the realm (rank did matter in the game, you start a peasant) you get a special animated sequence of the Royal Musical Corps playing you the anthem (all this was pretty impressive on the Commodore 64!) as well as special magic from the court wizard Mesron, then you are free to keep playing if you want, hunting for the best gear. it really stuck with me how winning really ment something in the game world if you kept playing. If I remember the later Dragon Quest games really did the same. Great stuff.

    Idk...this was the first game, I saw for NES, when I was about 4 or 5, and it blew my mind. It was also one of the first games I ever beat, by myself, back in the 80s.
    Games like Dragon Warrior 1 and Final Fantasy 1 always appealed to me, even as a 5 year old.
    I blame Dungeons and Dragons.

    I think both potential wives are members of the heroic bloodline, like distant cousins. All three, when the remakes gave you a redhead option. That's why no matter which one you pick, it's the right choice; you're merging two heroic bloodlines together no matter what choice you make, and whoever the other girl(s) marry is just an ordinary joe so no heroic children.

    90% of my experience with Dragon Quest comes from the spin offs, namely Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Heroes. Builders is a great game, Heroes is okay, but they definitely made me think of Dragon Quest as 'generic'. The other 10% of my Dragon Quest experience comes from playing the first couple of hours of DQXI, which, I have to say, also struck me as incredibly generic, albeit extremely well crafted. But after watching this, I figure I'll have to reappraise my perception. Clearly this game was a sophisticated JRPG in a way that FFIV wasn't.
    Great video, by the way.

    Didn't realize how much of a graphical upgrade that the DS is for DQ5. Also I thought both Nera/Flora and Bianca were descendants of Zenithia, but they needed the main character, who was from Gotha's royal bloodline to make the hero.

    • @JasonGravesPoser
      @JasonGravesPoser  3 роки тому +2

      That's another valid read, they could both be descendants.

    • @real-horse
      @real-horse 3 роки тому +2

      No, not because of the gothan blood line the hero is in, but because of the lofty peaks bloodline he inherited from his mother. That's where being able to recruit monsters comes from too

    • @nhlvan
      @nhlvan 3 роки тому +1

      @@real-horse That's what it was, I played DQ5 a while ago and couldn't remember if it was his dad or his mother's bloodline. Regardless, it's definitely more than just the wife like was said in the video.

    • @ZerogunRivale
      @ZerogunRivale 3 роки тому +2

      There is nothing that implies it's more than the wife. The game hammers it in over and over again that it's the Hero's lineage that matters. Nera, Flora, and Bianca are all sisters who were some reason, orphaned. The end of DQ5 DS if you talk to whoever you didn't marry reveal that they all actually have similar origins, having been found in similar areas after having been left behind.

    • @nhlvan
      @nhlvan 3 роки тому +1

      @@ZerogunRivale I'm confused by this comment because you say it's not more than just the wife, but then you explain how it's more than just the wife. Clearly any of he wives all had the bloodline necessary to make the legendary hero, but they also needed he main character's bloodline to complete it all.

  • @valiantparagonvideos2383

    Never trust someone who needs a haircut? More like never trust someone who doesn't pick Bianca.
    In all seriouness, I always feel a little left out when people talk about DQ5, because while I do like it and think it's a great game, I actually like 4 more (both DQ and FF) and can't really get behind its reputation. I do think its gimmick of following one guy from childhood to adulthood through fatherhood is a good one and super unique and memorable and have no problem placing this game high on any list of amamzing RPGs. But when we're drawing comparisons to Chrono Trigger you're in rarified air and its there that I just can't make it to.

  • @LotusGramarye

    The best about DQV is the DS remake that just is like "classic beloved JRPG that crafts a story that drags you in to love its characters? hold my beer" and makes it twice as good by adding a script the size of the original *to* the game in the form of the extra party dialogue, where u can ask every character wot they think after just about literally everything and they'll have a unique response.

    Surprised to come back here and realize that I never actually left a comment, so here goes. Dragon Quest V became my entry point into the series a couple of years ago and, coming off of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV and anticipating Final Fantasy VII's arrival on Switch, it was surprising to come across a much gentler storytelling approach. It's rare that those early Dragon Quest games will fling the player into overly dramatic setpieces or theatrical scenarios. Tension between party members is scarce, and earth-shattering twists are few. It was pretty jarring at first to be dropped into such an earnest kind of world, where the grand plot to defeat the big evil guy took a backseat to smaller, personal victories and NPC interactions. EarthBound was my only point of reference for such a game, mechanically and narratively, but I'd assumed it was done to facilitate its offbeat style. There was something oddly profound about finding it here, directly after Final Fantasy IV kept trying to blow me away by cranking up a set of increasingly absurd stakes. I shed a genuine tear when my son told me, without truly understanding the gravity of the moment, that he could wield the Zenithian Sword; the blade whose true owner my dad had spent his life searching for, a quest I had inherited and continued over the course of my life, and there was no flashback or bombastic cutscene reinforcing the magnitude of this discovery. It's not the sort of twist the player can't see coming either, it's the execution that sold it to me. A few lines and his ability to equip the sword were enough to recontextualize whole lifetimes in Dragon Quest V, and I was allowed to sit with the ramifications myself. You put it best, it's about how we live so that future generations can live better.

    I love the Dragon Quest series. I was watching your video on James Rolfe, and a comment you made on it stuck out to me when watching this. That James is not a gamer, by that it reminded me that I myself am no longer a gamer. I grew up as an only child with video games being my only hobby. I'm 30 now and I avoid video games these days. The only video game series that I play with any regularity anymore is Dragon Quest. Something about this series speaks to me and I always find myself coming back. Reason 1: You will level grind, whereas CT is near perfectly balanced.
    Reason 2: Soundtrack. DQ5 cannot even TOUCH Chrono Trigger's music.
    The only game I have ever played that truly rubs shoulders with Chrono Trigger, in my opinion, is Suikoden II. Even then CT still edges over it slightly because of that soundtrack.

      lmao. I wasn't even alive when DQ5 came out for the SFC, I didn't know what a dragon quest was until the 2010s and only recently played this game to completion after getting 11 and completing it. it isn't nostalgia, its just that good. even the flaws it has were fixed in the DS remake. DQ5 and Chrono Trigger are both good for vastly different reasons, as well as the fact that Dragon Quest's A-Team worked on Chrono Trigger instead of DQ6 which ended up being developed by a team that only made the SFC remake of DQIII iirc.

    6:40 You may have that backward, it's your genes that matter... not hers. You're the descendant of the legendary hero, the hero blood runs through your veins, just like it does your mothers.
    You're just not the hero, your children are. That's why the hero equipment reacts to you, but you cannot fully wield or wear it, and why you get so many spells known by the the true hero.
