While I was in Tokyo a few months ago, I met a 21-year-old girl named Karin who currently lives inside an internet cafe in Tokyo. Her room is 3 feet (1 meter) wide by 6 feet (2 meters) long, and she doesn't even have enough space to sleep horizontally. Believe it or not, more than 5,400 others in Tokyo are living in internet cafes because it's a much cheaper alternative than paying rent for an apartment in this expensive city.
Karin's situation is a sad one -- she was kicked out of her house a year ago, and physically abused by her father before becoming homeless on the streets. With little money in her bank account, she found a safe place to live at this internet cafe, and now she makes $1,300 a month by working at a hostess bar.
But she's still struggling to get by.
This story highlights the extreme pressure of Japanese society, as well as the social isolation that comes along with it. I'd love to hear your thoughts about Karin's situation, and the overall oddities of Japanese culture in the comments down below.

This concept of living in Internet cafes in Japan has intrigued me for the last 10 years - and I’m glad to finally have told this story. What do you think about Japan’s cut-throat society? And extreme social isolation? Do you think it’s a good or bad thing? Would love to hear from you in the comments here so we can discuss some of these issues 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
✌️🙏
Wish u helped her 😥
I love your story telling bro.
Hey drew i think you should advise this young lady to start a side hustle maybe a youtube channel in english she can post cool vlogs n we can subscribe n watch and maybe move to the Philippines
Her monthly income falls short of monthly accommodation 😢 where else does she stay? How does she buy anything else - basic necessities 🤷♀️ it is like this worldwide. This is the true and current global pandemic 😵
Tokyo seems like social media in real life: super shiny on the outside but depressing on the inside
Very true
Life isn't that difficult in Tokyo. Overworking is a problem, but there really isn't that much poverty in Japan compared to most European or Asian countries.
Well, she's obviously better off than drug addicts living on the streets of America and Europe. People on social media seem to overreact when it comes to social issues in Japan.
@@AIIIAKS-vn4coYup Americans love to criticize the far east, yet we have far bigger problems at home. We can’t even ride the metro or walk peacefully at night in our cities anymore.

She is a very brave woman to leave the situation of family abuse. I wish her all the best ❤️🙏🏽

@@ryanshaw4250seems sketchy to me but maybe she’s trying to live as if she doesn’t exist no trace or maybe she’s lying.
$46 a day is still $1,399 per month, that’s devastating 😔
It's possible she can only pay the daily, as she lives off tips from the hostess bar - yet an other thing poor folks have to deal with - higher rates cuz you can't pay a month or year in adv
There are places in japan less than half that price that are an adorable place to live
@@littlewigglemonster7691 I'm guessing you can't pay a daily rate tho, and would need a large sum every week/month/year to pay the rent, vs the daily payments one can make in places like these. We have a similar situation with residential hotels in the US. It's more expensive, but you can pay smaller increments, which ends up costing more in the end, but all one can do when their income isn't stable
💰
She can stay at share house its available anywhere in tokyo its much lesser cost than uncomfortable sleeping in internet café
That poor lady 😔 She has my sympathy. I hope she’s able to pull herself back out of this situation.

I mean she lied through her teeth the whole time and it hurt to watch. The story about the taxi.. wow, go look at a tokyo subway map and train map, Shinjuku where she works is like 300 yen away from places where 10% of properties are vacant.
In general, Japan is very very affordable and in that apartment i mentioned, i had a room mate and spent a total of 100,000 yen per month all in for insurance, rent, cell phone, internet, going out to eat 10 times a week, and dont forget drinking ahrd twice a week. I thought the video was about someone attempting a challenge, but as soon as I realized this was someone living there out of necessity, this took a really sad turn for me. These locations are really terrible not because they are small, but because they allow the marginalized to be forgotten in a vicious circle of poverty. It is just enough to help you get by but expensive enough to make it difficult to save up enough money to get ahead. This is indicative of a society where people have been forgotten and the availability of a societal safety net is gone. She is essentially a homeless youth fleeing abuse. She is literally one paycheck/downturn from making some very poor choices in a her life. I pray for her safety and that she makes it out of this situation okay.

Well, I live in Tokyo, but I think she could easily get out of this life. To begin with, $46 a night is not cheap at all. And if she lives there for 30 days, it will cost her over 200,000 yen a month, which is obviously more than the average Tokyo rent. There are plenty of apartments and share houses in central Tokyo for less than $500 a month. I don't know why she still lives in an Internet cafe over one of those places, but I'm sure she can move out immediately.
She spends 7000 yen/night at a net cafe ????
My Tokyo apartment is 60,000 yen/month so she's paying a lot more for worse living conditions.
She could stay at a sharehouse with a real room until she saves up for her own place.
OMG THATS REALLY GOO D RENT PRICE
@@audreyl704 it is. I'm right in the middle of the action, too. Between Shinjuku and Shibuya. My place is only 20m2 though.
When I lived in Tokyo I was paying like 130,000 yen and that was for quite a fancy 2 bedroom place in Shinjuku. I can't imagine why she's paying so much to live in an internet cafe
I came here to say this too. This doesn't seem convincing. There are so many shared houses that are cheaper than what she's paying.
Do you think she may have a gambling addiction to stay in the internet Cafe? I'm not sure if their internet cafes are the same but in the US it's a place for internet gambling. Could it also be a lack of knowledge about shared houses or places with cheaper rent?
Drew, I am so happy to see that you and your crew were able to make her feel comfortable, open up and share her life and most of all, her smile.
I stayed in a capsule hotel in Akasaka for 2500 yen/night. I think I got a discount on top of that because I was staying monthly. But it was really brutal on my wellbeing. The worst part is you have no private space, or even what private space you have you can still hear things. A lot of nightlife workers lived there, and I would often go to McDonald's or similar until they closed to eat and have a desk/chair to sit on and watch videos or do work. Tokyo is a brutal city to be alone, and culturally most Japanese people don't make friends with strangers easily or quickly, so those that I met were either on the fringes or immigrants.
Because you don't speak Japanese fluently. The language barrier in Japan is a real thing. And those who are willing to learn Japanese and integrate into the Japanese community can make Japanese friends easily.
Don't they have apps or websites people can get together to share a room? With so many old people there I'm sure a young woman like her can live in with an older person and help out with chores and take them to the clinic. $46/night can cover a nice hotel room in Thailand or the Philippines.
Regardless of whether you speak Japanese well or not it's still more difficult to make friends in Japanese culture than most other cultures. It's a fact of life, even amongst Japanese themselves they are not open to interacting with others easily.@@user-qm7jw
@@ontheroad5555 In Tokyo too. The prices he mentioned are completely delusional bs and I have no idea where that's suddenly coming from since I've never heard that kind of sensationalist misleading in any other video here.
This young woman is so beautiful. May things get better for her
Beautiful?
$46 a day? I highly doubt that. I live 25 minutes from Kabukicho by train and I live in a 57 sqm aparthment with two big bedrooms, livingroom and decent kitchen for 137,000 Yen a month. If she is paying $46 USD a day, that would mean she is paying about 220,345 Yen per month for that small internet cafe. She can sleep at a capsule hotel for cheaper. She can sleep in a guest house in Shinjuku for like 80,000 yen per month and have a lot bigger place, a better life, and a lot more money. How can she even afford that as she said she makes 200,000 Yen per month working at a hostess club. The math does not add up. They have 11 sqm apartments in Tokyo with no guarantor or landlord fees for 35,000 yen per month. I just watched a video on it yesterday. So she is wasting her money. I have lived here for 7 years, I know the prices here.
She’s living in deficit. At her young age (if she’s really 21) and giving her past history… she’s doing the best she knows to do. Hopefully… she’ll get to a better living situation some day soon.
@@MadAudi Yo cannot live in deficit here. Internet cafe's want cash daily. So if she is paying 7,000 Yen per day x 30 days = 280,000 Yen. It is not possible on a 200,000 Yen a month salary. The banks will not loan someone money that has no fixed address. The government will not give any financial support without a fixed address. In fact, they wont even give her a bank account if she does not already have one. Cell phone companies will not give her a phone contract without a fixed address either. I been living here for 7 years and I know Japan very well. In fact, she cannot get any help from the Shinjuku ward office as she has no fixed address and does not pay her monthly ward tax. Without a proper fixed address in Japan, you cannot do anything. She most likely would get paid in cash per month as that is 100% legal here if you request it from your employer. So based on what I know, and basic math, this story is BS and only here to get views to make money from the view counts. There is no way she lives in an internet cafe based on basic math.
this story is BS indeed
True i agree i did the calculations and it’s not adding up at all.
7,000*30 days = 210,000 and she earns 200,000 per month. I don't get it. Why stick around that cafe? I think she can find a sharehouse at Kita Shinjuku for around 50,000 yen a month. Not sure if that's still the same price now. But at least she gets better accommodation than that expensive tiny room.
i doubt she stays there, probably cheaper internet cafe
also would massively prefer this to a share house
She's fleeing domestic violence from the main man supppsed to protect her and thatbis traumatic. No way would she feel comfortable sharing with strangers to feel safer and get some form of rest in her exhausted present situation
Not sure if she even knows alternative places to stay
Yeah, I live in Tokyo, and my apartment(not a share house) rent is $350 a month. To be honest, these accommodations in Tokyo are not that cheap. She can probably find cheaper apartments even in Shinjuku if you look for them.
@@drewbinskyBut she speaks Japanese and is 21. I find it hard to believe she doesn’t know. She spends her whole salary on rent??
Something aint right, she makes $1,318.495 a month but the Internet cafe is $1,380.00 a month then how does she feed, clothe and pay for transportation or personal expenses? I hope they meant that’s what she makes a week because the MATH ain’t MATHING!!!!!!
She's almost certainly lying and the guy is clueless or just wants the clicks and doesn't care. First of all she's clearly not even a native Japanese speaker despite claiming to be raised in Japan (she has an accent), and at her income level she could afford MUCH better accommodation. I lived in Tokyo personally for $500 / month. The big sunglasses to hide her face make it even more likely lmao
She seems very intelligent and she will definitely succeed in time sad knowing the living conditions in relation to home but i have hope

@hockey_highlights_and_more It's not cheaper than America, it's cheaper than the most expensive places in America.
Where I live, you can get a 2 bed hotel room with indoor pool, hot tub, gym & breakfast for about $20 more per night than she is paying for that closet.
@@pewpewTN you missed the part where I said only a few dollars for food, you can’t eat a full course meal anywhere in America for $5
Ok let me say this as a Japanese person living in Tokyo, this girl is living this way by choice. Society is not forcing her to live this way.
If she has trouble working from say mental issues she can apply for public assistance.
There are numerous unskilled jobs that pay over 1500yen an hour in Tokyo. After taxes that's north of 190,000yen. She can find higher paying jobs if she worked night shifts.
For housing, there are apartments for 60,000yen in the middle of Tokyo.
Maybe she's too tired or it's too daunting for her to deal with searching for a job/apartment or she just wants to get paid while drinking and that's fine but that lifestyle is by choice.
we don't know all the details in her story to judge like this. sadly i was only able to spend an afternoon with her to tell this story, but it's not complete
@@drewbinskyI think that’s why there are many comments like this. Her story doesn’t really make sense. You should have found someone had no choice but to live in Internet cafes from time to time.
I didn’t think she was a good representation
Drew is right, we dont know the whole story of this Lady to jump into conclusion, One thing is visible, She is very traumatized because of the abusive father and screaming for help. Hoping we can help find her mother in the Philippines
Maybe because she ran away, she doesn't have the proper documents and identification to apply for public assistance. Those things require really troublesome paperwork in many countries including Japan. Plus if you have mental health problems, you might have to prove it with a diagnosis from a doctor, which is even more paperwork and obstacles.
I agree that there are apartments that cost much cheaper, but again, most landlords might require documents and a few months of deposit/down payment. In Japan the deposit/down payment can be more than 1 additional month of rent because some landlords charge "key money". And some landlords might refuse to have a tenant who works in a hostess bar because the culture still view red light district work as "shameful".
The only thing I'm wondering about is why she doesn't go to a cheaper internet cafe. I'm just confused because it's really easy to find cafes in Shinjuku that charge much less than that for a 12-hour stay (I've quickly found one through a Google search). Or maybe she doesn't feel safe elsewhere?
That's right. She must be an ignorant and lonely person.
That's sad. I feel sorry for her.
I'm in Thailand and my 350 sq ft hotel room with jacuzzi tub, separate shower and 16th floor view of the city is less than $25/day. water/electricity/room cleaning/amenities all included.
Tokyo seems so bad for people who don't make a lot of money.

Yeah idk. I lived in tokyo in 2017 for 6 months. I made a great deal: My room was 8 m² in a big shared house with a fully equipped kitchen for 200€/month. 5min walking to the train, 15min from there by train to yamanote line. Food was super affordable in many places. Most expensive thing was commuting, so I cycled a lot.
You can actually get a micro apartment in tokyo for 400 dollars nicer than that internet cafe , equipped with bathroom, laundry , kitchen……….

I wish there was more of an opportunity for micro housing in NJ and all over the US, but it’s still so expensive
If you have a fixed contract, and patience/luck you might find one.
However many people don't have a stable job. This lady is perhaps selling her body every other day...
So much for being progressive 🥱🥱🥱
$46 a night is crazy for a closet, but I guess it is Shinjuku so it makes sense. Based on her income she barely makes enough to eat at that price. Ive seen capsule hotels for cheaper but I guess since it’s more of a long term living situation you’d want to have a computer/TV at least. I imagine that’s the main reason she’s choosing that vs a capsule hotel. That’s a tough situation. Hopefully things get better for her and for all the people who are living this way.
From my experience, everything in Shinjuku is insanely expensive. Kabukicho is interesting to see, but generally I was not a fan of Tokyo.
Yes and that there is a huge TV / computer with internet included !

@@user-qm7jw Yeah I am a foreigner living in Shinjuku in my own apartment and I pay much less than she's paying at the internet cafe. Apartments are ridiculously cheap here compared to any other developed country. It's misleading to present Tokyo as a super expensive city when it's not. The prices listed here are way off too. The $230 taxi ride would less than $5 on the train. You can get a hotel room like that for well under $100, not $190. That restaurant that supposedly costs $83 for a meal is Kura Sushi and only costs $0.70 per plate. You could eat over 100 plates of sushi for $83. Current minimum wage in Tokyo is $7.06 per hour which is over $1200 if working full time, not $700.

Hi Drew, with more than 4 million subscribers, you can do better. Too many loop holes and mis-information in this video. I'm currently staying in Tokyo on tourist pass and I pay less than her for my own 21sqm apartment. Tokyo is not an expensive city to live in. Japan-made products, food and essentials are affordable by any developed country standards. Average salary here is USD$3400. There are shared houses where one can live comfortably for less than USD$600 a month and save their salaries, and no deposit is needed. I believe you have been scammed by her story.
Oh wow, thanx for the information
Clearly he doesn't care about telling the truth, he starts the video saying Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world...
You can find places to rent all over tokyo for 315$-600$USD no problem. I don't know how you can make a video like this and start it off with so many lies.
That hotel room is not 190$usd - the meal is not 83$ its actually exactly (5.85usd) - and a 40 minute taxi ride is around $50 usd. I guess being truthful and honest is dead nowadays.
I do understand your point about the possible misrepresentation of some of the facts about cost of living in Tokyo and what not but it is true that Japan has a huge problem with many people living in Internet cafes and the like. The country claims to have a supposedly low homeless population but the reason for that is that while homeless, people who live in cafes and such have shelter and as such are considered as truly homeless. Additionally, Japan has a tendency of shutting down homeless encampments and forcing them into the countryside and outside of the city thereby giving the appearance of a lower homeless population in comparison to other big cities. These facts are damning enough on their own and I think this story would have been better served without the exaggeration/misrepresentation over cost of living in Tokyo vs. living wage.
All of this doesn’t even get into the topic of Japan’s ongoing struggle with homelessness in teens due to bad home life and poor support systems for them. As well as the steadily increasing number of homeless elderly people due to the rapidly aging population. As an outsider looking in (specifically as an American) the homeless crisis in Japan seems far different from how it is in other countries. Even in anime I’ve noticed that being homeless in Japan always seems like more of a job than it is in other countries as there always appears to be very little support options available for them. Instead the only way a character is ever depicted as escaping their homeless situation is if they have family who either decides to take them back or take them in. I’ve never seen any depictions of shelters or even resources offering aids for those in crisis.
Instead the most help offered always appears to be in the form of soup kitchens held in public parks. Meanwhile the government officials spend all their time and resources shutting down encampments and people away from the makeshift communities they establish for themselves. I understand that this is fiction however I’ve found this portrayal of homeless life in japan to be consistent among every program I’ve seen where the topic is brought up leading me to believe that this stuff is considered common knowledge in Japan.
@@Ama0890 no it's not possible misrepresentation of some facts. it's total and utter lies and misrepresentation of pretty much every "fact" and information in the entire video.
Homelessness in Tokyo and Japan is childsplay compared to any major city in the US.
Having a job and living in a manga cafe or internet cafe is NOT homeless and many people that do it prefer it.
There are homeless on the streets here in Tokyo but so few compared to any major North American city and they're even allowed to sleep inside the train stations at night.
Soup kitchens in public parks, governmetn shutting down encampments? You're talking about your own country. Tokyo has all sorts goverment support programs as well as NPO's should people c hoose to use them. Most of the few homeless that do exist prefer to actually be homeless.

21 sq meters is nothing tho..that's 226 sq feet. My sister lives in the apartment in my house and it's double that size for 1200 USD.
Good morning my brother Drew. Looking forward to another adventure❤
Let’s not exaggerate here. Tokyo is not nearly as expensive as living in LA. Japan also has a very robust train system so having to take a taxi is more of a luxury unless it’s after midnight. But it is also safe to walk at night in Japan. She works at a hostess club by choice and chooses to live in an Internet cafe. She is the one who ran away. She had a chance to get a good education but threw it away. She still dresses well and it is so cheap to eat out in Japan. Just like any other city, go to a fancy restaurant, and you will pay the high price. I would like a to live in a nice apartment in Newport Beach Ca. but guess what? It’s too expensive. All my friends in Japan are doing well. Videos like this are nothing but exaggerations. Of course times are tough but that is not only Japan. Ask anyone in the United States and they will say the same. Dont believe everything you see. If you hang out in the pubs and bars, you can easily meet people.

These days, far too many people immediately stop accepting new information the instant they detect an opposing opinion.
These people are prime targets for trolls/bots from consumer marketing to political propaganda.
Many will knowingly and/or unknowingly help entities with very bad intentions by taking bits and pieces of information from real social problems, manipulating then multiplying these “hot button” issues.

its really quite concerning how far people go to protect themselves from being wrong on social media.

@@KyDarknight Thanks! :)
There are a few important points that aren't highlighted enough in your video:
- She’s not Japanese, which probably creates additional challenges for her.
- She has suffered from family violence, yet it seems like no one cares. Are there any support or protection programs in Japan for such cases? If this issue is ignored, it’s likely affecting more than just 5400 people.
I have to dislike your video because it feels like a bit of a stretch overall. Here are some reasons why:
- It's not true that you need to pay $80 to eat at a restaurant in Tokyo, not all restaurants are that expensive.
- It's uncommon to need a 40-minute taxi ride in Tokyo, especially with the widespread availability of public transportation. Who actually does that in Japan, apart from foreign UA-camrs visiting for a few days?
- Your only housing option isn't a hotel or something in the city center. Just because you work in the city center doesn’t mean you can’t commute. Renting in Tokyo can be significantly cheaper. For example, you could rent an apartment (with your own toiled and shower!) in Nakano for $400-600 per month, which is just a 20-minute ride to Shinjuku.
- The minimum wage in Tokyo is higher than in many other parts of Japan by law, so it's not $700 and it's measured in $/hour, not $/month. Additionally, many people earn more than the minimum wage.
- I watch other channels about Japan, and they show plenty of social interaction, I think "extreme social isolation" is an exaggeration.
Thanks for the clarifications

I am from Prague, Czech republic. A while ago I had nowhere to live for about 3 months so I lived in a pension where I was paying 900 CZK per day (thats not even $40). The room was about 12x bigger than this, had a balcony, shower, fridge, big TV, kingsize bed, pool in the backyard. I'm really grateful for where I live. Btw, the minimum wage is also higher here. And 40 minute cab ride is like $20 and the meal from the intro would be like $10-15. I'm not kidding.
I've lived in Tokyo for 12 years and I've never seen more crap in my life than in this video. Firstly "Karin" is not Japanese. Tokyo is not one of the most expensive cities in the world. If she's working as a hostess it's probably because she's working there illegally without a visa. It's a country of 125 million people, 38 million in Tokyo and only 5,400 of them are living in net cafes??? Not to mention how epically rude it is to speak to someone with sunglasses on in Japan. This is a hostess scam. And so cringe.

How then is she able to get into an internet cafe? I remember when I visited in 2012, when I wanted to get in just to use the internet (I was staying at a business hotel), I was told that unless I had a Japanese driver's license or identification, I couldn't get in.

That opening is extreme. Tokyo is quite affordable to live in compared to other major cities around the world. I have a friend who lives in Tokyo and he says he pays only $750/month for an apartment and there are lots of apartments under $1000/month. Tokyo is a massive city so maybe it has ultra expensive neighborhoods like SOHO and Tribeca. But I would also think it had more affordable neighborhoods like NYC like Flatbush and Washington Heights.
The more expensive areas of Tokyo are Minato City which includes Roppongi Hills, Azabu and Asakasa. Chiyoda City (stayed in Chiyoda the times I've gone to Japan, loved it) and Shibuya City which includes Shibuya (there's extensive neighborhoods away from the skyscrapers), Ebisu and Harajuku.
Shinjuku generally isn't overly expensive. The cost of living in Japan compared to say the US is WAY lower (the beginning of the video is VERY misleading) and people are able to live comfortably for the cost that here in the US many would consider is struggling for a single person (i.e. $30k/year)
@@emssasukeisunderrated7946 Thank you. That's the same thing my buddy says. He makes about $50,000 per year from what he tells me and he says he can live way better than he could when he was staying in NYC making $85,000 per year.
