The M50 is not constant AWD-- it will cruise using mainly the rear motor to save battery and engage the front motor when needed-- either for traction in the corners or the extra 200 horsepower in the acceleration. Awesome review. Now if they could just make enough of them. Although the other day, I was at an intersection, of the 4 cars there, besides me, 3 were Tesla Model 3's. No thanks, I will take the BMW.
BMW made this car very well 👌🏽. It’s important you have all the extras in the i4. Otherwise it’s not the same. I have a fully loaded i4 and I recently had a basic courtesy car. It felt different and not as good.
Totally with you on the Tesla CarPlay integration. I’d happily pay the £9.99 per month to have CarPlay in my Model 3. And an option for less-firm suspension. 😵💫 Great review Stef.
SPOT ON. I own a 2022 BMW i4 edrive40 and is best car I have ever owned. I have test driven a lot of electric cars including the Tesla model 3 and the only car that is better than the BMW i4 in my opinion is the Porsche Taycan. That sadly is way, way out of my league price wise.
The I4 is nice. Can’t get over the front grill unfortunately. Although it’s a handsome car and better looking at most angles than the Tesla. No Apple car play in my Tesla is bloody annoying tbh. The software updates on my Tesla and jump in a drive etc would be hard to replace. I am just happy there are a lots of good choices now. Really well produced video. 👍.
What you mean by "The software updates on my Tesla and jump in a drive etc would be hard to replace."? The i4 is remotely updated when there is an update. My 330e 2020 model has received several updates so far (no bugs to fix but improvements) and I expect my i4 will also receive updates remotely.
@@VickiStokes BMW had that for a long time also. Even my 330e have it. I am no fan of the front grill, but I prefer that over a Tesla front, and after my last test drive, I began to like it. The problem is the long waiting... I just placed an order and have to wait at least 10-12 months for delivery.
From reviews they said it didn't have seamless go. I.e in my car I walk up open door select drive and go. The car is awake and ready to drive. No start buttons or anything. Be interested in seeing if the software updates are all aspects of the cars firmware. I know in some it only does bits. So a BMS update would be back to dealer. Hopefully BMW have this OTA.
Enjoyed the vid and the production and footage was really good, which kept me entertained. Lots of really good points about the BMW; it just doesn’t feel like a massive jump to EV ownership. In this respect the Tesla stumbles before I’ve even driven it - I don’t have instruments in front of me. Just weirds me out. Want to sit IN a car not ON it. But equally the one question that all potential EV owners get super anx about wasn’t answered which was to do with range and efficiency. If I’m to commute on the motorway in the BM is that going to work for me? Or put another way was there enough difference in range/efficiency for this to be significant in a decision? Subscribed: enjoyed the presentation and the visuals. Look forward to more!
Now that Tesla has learned a thing or two about building cars, their strategy is build a ton of these toys and make as much money as they can before the real car builders catch up with electric
I major thing you missed. Telsa has a superior charging network. Advanced navigation with super charging stations built in. Try driving your bmw out of town at night with your wife and kids. Apples and Oranges. Is Bmw is a better built car ? Yes. Better is relative depending on your requirements.
I’m guessing you’re in America. That’s just not the case in the UK. Tesla uses CCS and their network isn’t as dominant as it is in the states. Also, a decent number of tesla super chargers are “open” to all vehicles here as well. I’ve used several Superchargers in my I-Pace. But also, non-Tesla rapid chargers are all over the place here as well and in general have a much higher reliability rate than I believe EA has in the States. So here, the charging network really is a non-issue.
I4 is a beautiful car, but is a heavy car, without efficiency, less range, in the back you don't have enough space, it's not faster, it doesen't have the advantage of supercharger. I4 looks great and If you don't have a problem with the consumption, I think is ok.
@@gcr3990 in real world range test the i4 actually beats out model 3. And it’s still fast 5 sec 0-60 is no slouch. You don’t need that extra sec lol. The back space def sucks but for me and I’m assuming most who get this car, we aren’t getting it to haul passengers around the back much. The trunk is 100% better though with the hatch entry and build quality is infinitely better
Shorthand for an E40 that's carrying the M Sport exterior of the M50. Most obvious cue to tell them apart would be the mirrors-- only the M50 has the winged housing.
I can't agrees less. The i4 Is amazing and such a step up from our Tesla. Still waiting for our delivery in the US but got to test drive one for a while. It's sorcery whaat BMW have done!

Totally unbiased review about a car that happens to be electric. How about some charging speed tests, handling, cornering, efficiency (I'm sure your "car that happens to be electric" is quite thirsty), and the most important consideration, super charging infrastructure.
You are quite wrong... It happens the i4 is quite efficient, even in highway. Now, the charger infrastructure, Tesla is quite ahead but at least here, in Portugal, we are getting a huge rise of chargers every month... As we are in a small country that isn't an issue here. Anyway, the news that Tesla is opening the superchargers to other brands is great! Let's wait and see in what conditions (price and times allowed).
I had a Model S until last week and here is my opinion: tesla is a powerful car equipped with onboard entertainment, the bmw is a car where the powerful driving is the drivers entertainment. 😊
The model 3 performance is just the slower no luxury option. Its a poor mans bmw i4. Nothing about its exterior or interior look special or expensive at all.
@@nakkadu The car is funny without it. In a Dr Seuss Cat In The Hat kind of way. People compliment my car like they are worshiping it every week. That's right, go out of their way, walk over and tell me how much more desirable my i4 M50 is to them than a Tesla.
Those 2 HUGE liver shaped grills are really ugly in my opinion. I like the look of the model 3 more, just personal preference. My friend owns a Model 3 and I think all around its the much better car than the BMW. Nice try for them but not good enough.
@@hotrod182 Maybe to you, which is fine by me, just a difference in opinion. I like the tech, engineering, safety, interior, etc more in the 3. But again, everyone has different tastes which is one of the reasons we don't all drive around in the same car.
@@dboy203 I've driven a Tesla on numerous occasions and yeah, I love the interior. YOU may not like it but many many people do. Isn't it awesome how people aren't made with liking the same thing? That would be "Boring" if we did.

Consumers decide - Tesla sells BMW 15 to 1 why is that - Teslas are awesome BMW’s are compromised because they were not built as an electric car. Plus the public charging is garbage , the Tesla super charger network is 1000 times better- located everywhere, reliable and integrated with tech on car - ie tells you if all the charging points are occupied and re routes to the best location. I was an early ev adopter and had a bmw I 3 so am speaking from experience
In the UK, the charging network is not an issue, Tesla doesn’t have a dominance and converting to take other brands. It’s purely about the drive, which the BMW wins and Tesla just screams electric car with its futuristic bubble shape I’m not a fan of. The BMW is a drivers car and a beautiful looking car at that with real presence on the road.
@@borinvlogsok but it is a matter of taste, I think the i4 is a lovely looking sleek car whereas all the Teslas are boring looking bubble cars. I love the i4 because it doesn’t look like one of those futuristic EV’s personally but if we all liked the same cars it’d be boring! 😂
@@borinvlogsu seriously did not say the model 3 looks better then the i4 lmfao. Comparing sales figures is bogus. Comparing tesla to bmw is like comparing porsche to Toyota. Bmw is a high end luxury brand. The model 3 gets tax incentives and cost less. Everyone that has switched from a model 3 to a bmw has had nothing but positive things to say about the quality and ride difference. Plus the i4 m50 is faster. What else more could u want.
Tesla is a software company their cars are built like poop, very cheap. I've driven the Plaid and looked over at my friend the car owner and said why would you waste your money on a 0 to 60 car, and in fine fashion he said because I can. I have always found BMW the step child of Mercedes-Benz, but since they have started building high quality EV cars I believe Mercedes-Benz is now their step child. This is what happens when an actual car company starts building EV cars #perfection. I hate to say it but the Ford f 150 lighting top model might be better than the BMW.
How is bmw a quality car when they keep on going back to workshop to fix problems, i supplied equipment to car workshop and I know bmw is not a good quality car.
Bad review and very bias. I wish he could have compared the bmw to the tesla instead of talking about the bmw all the time (range difference, quality inside of both, speed, horse power, etc)
You missed the point of the review, he owns the Tesla and doesn’t need to review it. This was him approaching the BMW as a Tesla owner and how it felt to him in comparison. Hmmmm. Was hoping for an actual comparison, which was very much suggested by your title… but it was yet another review of the i4. Nevermind. Carry on.
Totally agree!
You nailed it! Honest review 👍🏻
Id pick the BMW i4 too
Im gonna have my i4 e40 soon
How long the waiting list?
Awesome review. Now if they could just make enough of them. Although the other day, I was at an intersection, of the 4 cars there, besides me, 3 were Tesla Model 3's. No thanks, I will take the BMW.
Great video! Very professional. 👍
BMW made this car very well 👌🏽. It’s important you have all the extras in the i4. Otherwise it’s not the same. I have a fully loaded i4 and I recently had a basic courtesy car. It felt different and not as good.
Oh God ""You "Hate yourself".... That was a great Exit.
Totally with you on the Tesla CarPlay integration. I’d happily pay the £9.99 per month to have CarPlay in my Model 3. And an option for less-firm suspension. 😵💫
Great review Stef.
Awesome review
BMW has over-the-air software updates too. Not just a Tesla thing.
Our i4 is on the boat to the USA. One great thing about driving it is that you can’t see the beaver teeth.
Look forward to more!
if not for the 20k price difference, then definitely i4. also wish BMW will make the next Gen i4 lighter.
I prefer to have the instrument panel in front of me rather than in centre of car plus heads up. To much distraction otherwise.
Now that Tesla has learned a thing or two about building cars, their strategy is build a ton of these toys and make as much money as they can before the real car builders catch up with electric
The real builders are already catching up lol
The i4 looks way better than the Tesla
Totally agree
Teslas just look awful.
Like the pope mobile
I4 is a beautiful car, but is a heavy car, without efficiency, less range, in the back you don't have enough space, it's not faster, it doesen't have the advantage of supercharger. I4 looks great and If you don't have a problem with the consumption, I think is ok.
@@leemarshall3649 if they looked awful they wouldn't sell.
Space eggs
@@gcr3990 in real world range test the i4 actually beats out model 3. And it’s still fast 5 sec 0-60 is no slouch. You don’t need that extra sec lol. The back space def sucks but for me and I’m assuming most who get this car, we aren’t getting it to haul passengers around the back much. The trunk is 100% better though with the hatch entry and build quality is infinitely better
Picking up one in 10 days. IA
Thank you! Really good review)) hello from Ukraine 🇺🇦 I'm waiting for new videos !
i4 M40? Very professional…
Shorthand for an E40 that's carrying the M Sport exterior of the M50. Most obvious cue to tell them apart would be the mirrors-- only the M50 has the winged housing.
This one has the visibility pack
I4 is better than Tesla. Well that’s subjective. But it’s a lot more promising than Tesla. I love mine.
Great… now I want to buy a new car!
I can't agrees less. The i4 Is amazing and such a step up from our Tesla. Still waiting for our delivery in the US but got to test drive one for a while. It's sorcery whaat BMW have done!
Electric car\ car that is electric 👍👍
This guy is hilarious
No matter how beautiful the computer case is, the technology inside is the core, how powerful , how smart, what it can do, what is the whole new future tec experience, I prefer tesla here....
And here in lies the problem with Tesla, computer first, car second. I prefer a car that happens to be electric powered
@@leemarshall3649 not really whom is first and second it's more like a what tectonic smart things built-in a car and how really smart is it. like if you really want to build a successful smartphone like changed the world level , the technology is the key, not only technology but it's a most important key for not matter smartphone smartcar or future smartrobot. you want to make it really smart not just looks smart and just keep the old things old habits like everyone did before iPhone came out. does Tesla make a perfect ev? of course not, it still need a long way mprove everything to become a better car. but has Tesla made a huge contribution to the future of the ev influential brands in the world? big yes
The other brands are just the subscribers/followers. You are right about that.
Simple rule... if you look for efficiency go for a Tesla, if you look for driving experience go for a bmw i4 50m.
How many records or races has the i4 won over Model 3?
ua-cam.com/video/BxGGP8UCeI0/v-deo.html
The i4 and the 3 have pretty similar efficiency.
Why would one need Autopilot to relieve the effort of driving when you can have a car where driving feels like no effort in the first place?
You're adorable. :)
The model 3 performance is just the slower no luxury option. Its a poor mans bmw i4. Nothing about its exterior or interior look special or expensive at all.
The BMW has an on off button.....how quaint
The tesla has a fart button....how 8 year old adolescent
@@gregmiller9957 Yes but you don't have to use it if you don't find it funny.
@@nakkadu The car is funny without it. In a Dr Seuss Cat In The Hat kind of way. People compliment my car like they are worshiping it every week. That's right, go out of their way, walk over and tell me how much more desirable my i4 M50 is to them than a Tesla.
It also has a steering wheel which doesn’t fall off when you’re driving it. Is that quaint too?
@@AbuDhabiDude I've never had that problem or even heard of it.
Those 2 HUGE liver shaped grills are really ugly in my opinion. I like the look of the model 3 more, just personal preference. My friend owns a Model 3 and I think all around its the much better car than the BMW. Nice try for them but not good enough.
BMW has way more character, quality, and premium drive experience. The Tesla is plain vanilla Camry common around here.
@@hotrod182 Maybe to you, which is fine by me, just a difference in opinion. I like the tech, engineering, safety, interior, etc more in the 3. But again, everyone has different tastes which is one of the reasons we don't all drive around in the same car.
Ever looked inside a Tesla 3? Boring There’s a difference between simplistic and nothing at all
@@dboy203 I've driven a Tesla on numerous occasions and yeah, I love the interior. YOU may not like it but many many people do. Isn't it awesome how people aren't made with liking the same thing? That would be "Boring" if we did.
@@ronin7645 The problem with a Tesla, you are driving around the same car as everyone else, lol. There are 3 at every intersection in my city. I don't know if there is more than a couple i4 M50's in my city as I can go weeks without seeing another one.
Look, I love BMW. But Tesla is still the EV king.
Massive 19" wheels hahah
@@vollers999 New BMW are just so ugly except the M8.
The model 3 looks super outdated espicially it's bulbous plain jane head lights compared to bmws aggresive lazer lights. The model 3 is shapped like and egg and has cheap plastic looking rims. Ur def in the major minority if u think the model 3 looks better 😂 u get 0 luxury aswell not even a HUD or gauge clusters. Nothing feels special or expensive in a tesla
Have you seen the Mercedes EQS and EQE? They are really luxurious. However, I'm a BMW gal all the way. The i4 will be my 4th BMW.
@@VickiStokes this car just shocked me to the core, I couldn't believe BMW had it in them to land a knock out punch on their first luxury EV.
How is bmw a quality car when they keep on going back to workshop to fix problems, i supplied equipment to car workshop and I know bmw is not a good quality car.
They learned a lesson from the i3.
BMW I4 E-DRIVE 40 ADVERTISEMENT!
Bad review and very bias. I wish he could have compared the bmw to the tesla instead of talking about the bmw all the time (range difference, quality inside of both, speed, horse power, etc)
The result would have been the same and you’d still be unhappy.
You missed the point of the review, he owns the Tesla and doesn’t need to review it. This was him approaching the BMW as a Tesla owner and how it felt to him in comparison. It was a very honest well put together review and I liked it done in a slightly jokey way compared to some of these egotistical maniacs from the car magazines.
