For me, inconsistency is a very good thing. It means you are slowly getting better at drawing the characters. Of course they should look mostly the same in the same comic.
I think inconsistency is natural when you start drawing the characters, and with practice you'll get more consistent results just getting used to the character and how you want to portray them.
recognizable, at least lol
an exercise I learned when I was learning animation is Iterative drawling. If you want to draw the same character consistently then set up a page with 4 rows of 5. In each box draw your character in the same pose one stroke of a time for the entire row. So you draw the action line 5 times one in each box same angle same size, the circle for the head 5 times one in each box, same angle same size. etc etc. On the second row you do a different pose. on the third row you do the first pose again, etc etc until you fill up the whole page. Then put that page aside and do another one after a long break. same poses same process.
THIS BURNS the character into your brain and lets you call up their details easily as well as think of the drawing process of the character as you go. Usually the last one on the page is the most accurate.
Thanks for sharing Doc! It's a helpful drawing exercise for sure.
This is, exactly what I needed THANK YOU SO MUCH.
@@francescafrancesca3554 glad it helped
Oh my gosh this is so freaking helpful- I have mostly humanoid characters that aren’t THAT that cartoony so I can’t really do that “turn ur character into shapes” tip that much, AND THIS IS SO HELPFUL THANK YOU
You're very welcome! Glad I could be of help 😄
The advice to break the body into shapes is the same for realistic figure drawing too
A lot of my characters are in the shape of a “Squart.” A square combined with a heart.
good vidio. I need my character to be SUPER consistent because I'm doing animation
Thank you! And yeah in animation it's SO important to have consistency in your character between frames. Hope the video helps!
*thats* why I use onion-skin!
(unless its on paper for some reason, im not made out pf money!)
@@coolskelleton95 it's still not enough tho it helps a lot. it all comes down to practice and how well you can draw your character
@@jaredcortez6709 i guess so.
@@jaredcortez6709 I know this a 2 yr old comment but your only half correct onion skin helps keep head shapes and feature placement easier cause you can view it in motion giving your brain a illusory 3d image of your drawing. With both you can be a phenomenal artist. With only onion skin you can gain muscle memory of 3d spaces building up your consistency with novice level training. Later you should drop the onion skin to practice on your own without handicap.
Good and Simple explanation.
I would also add one more point to it:
-Adding Identifying features to characters.(Like Birthmarks, Scars, Peculiar Hair colors or Body shapes,..etc)
Glad you liked it! That's true, always keep consistency on those specific features, people will notice if suddenly a birthmark is missing.
I'm more worried about face proportions than anything, in my art, facial features are consistent, but not their placement.
@@nosferattusx2 Thats exactly what I struggle with too!
As someone who is recently getting back into art after taking a break for awhile this actually helped
That makes me glad, happy it helped!
i think i struggle the most with head to body proportions, i always feel like the head is too small so i size it up but then when i do i feel like the body is too small so i size it up and then i just go back and forth and never quite figure it out and even if i overlay the exact reference it still ends up looking off somehow and then even if i get somewhere im happy when i look at it the next day it usually suddenly looks wayy off again
It's not easy! So don't beat yourself up on it. When I want to have the proportions right I just start with a quick Head sketch and then do more heads in a straight line until I have 7 or 7 and a half for the whole body. (this of course depends on your art style and what proportions you like!) Good luck scribblecloud, keep going!
@@DonCorgi thanks, it does tend to get more tricky when the character is in more complex poses though
It'll help you to have a Big Medium Small reference, if it's a stylised character you can create interest with shape hierarchy
I remember sketching an random anthro animal, and it looked very good. When I try to do it again a few weeks later, it looked completely different, but not in a good way
It happens! Our brain forgets how to draw things when we don't draw them for some time. That's why I recommend a drawing routine so you keep that muscle memory up! And don't worry, just keep trying and it will get better with every drawing. Have fun with the whole process!
although i've been drawing my comfort character for a while now, i only recently decided on how i want him to look like. it calms me down a bit that the in the original source he looks a little different on each piece too. if you really think about it, you yourself look different on each day too! it's only natural to stay inconsistent as we are living creatures that change all the time. thank you for the video!
That's true! It's parth of the growth as an artist and how your skill level changes over time as well, so things will look different. Glad you enjoyed the video!
thank you! ive been scared to try watching art tutorials for the fear of maybe getting into some bad habit or something idk i was just dumb but this really put some sense in me!
You're welcome Ewaasloth! Glad it helped, I have a couple of art tutorials on the channel. Feel free to watch them whenever you feel ready 😊
My channel photo is a logo a friend did for me, but id like to draw him for future thumbnails. thank you. Your tutorial actually helped!
Hey Huey, that's great! Remember to share with your friend once you do that, I'm sure they'll be very happy :) Glad the tutorial helped!
I love how your pink haired character's hair becomes jagged when she's upset haha
Haha thank you Ryan! I like to use Hair for the emotions of characters.
The most recent character I have made has a VERY specific outfit with a ton of little details, so no matter what it’s going to be a pain to draw him, but this will certainly help. Thanks!
You're very welcome, good luck with your character!
@@DonCorgi Ty!
Thank you for the tips, I'm going to do this for my comic

👍
Alternatively you could just model them in 3D and just use that “puppet”
That's a really good way too! I'm not good at 3D but I've seen other artists use this method very successfully.
Awesome and helpful hints! thank you!!
Thanks Nate, glad they are helpful!

Thank you for this video, it was very helpful for me! I am working on illustrating a children's book for my brother and have never had to draw a consistent character - and it's a dog!
You're very welcome Lark! Haha dogs can be tough, I would recommend you doing a character sheet with the 4 main views of your dog. Have fun and keep at it! 💪

I bet you're a great singer.. I can tell by your voice..
Haha thanks, but singing isn't really my strong suit!
i am learning animation and and my drawings not being consistent is really becoming a big problem. i hope it getts better soon.
Keep up that practice slowly and you'll see improvements! Animation is a tough topic in itself, but if you can draw consistently you'll get a GREAT leg up on the competition. You got this!
Bro, the problem with making a turnaround/expression sheet is when I actually set my efforts to do so, they feel off. But when I'm drawing them normally, they feel fine half the time xD
It's tough! It's part of the process of (eventually) getting those turnarounds perfect.
Wow, this was actually really helpful!
Do you think it would be alright to trace over your old drawings of characters to help keep them consistent, especially when it come to difficult angles? Or would that hinder any sort of progress?
I'm glad it was helpful Brynn!
I think if you're doing it because you thought the old drawing was looking quite good and you want to practice and find out how you did it, it's a good choice! But if you want to keep exploring and progressing your art style (while staying consistent) I would instead make new drawings with the base reference from previous drawings.
Hope that makes sense, enjoy the videos!
It helps build muscle memory for various curves and shapes! I trace photos, my old artwork, coloring pages, etc. (Sometimes I'll trace other people's art, but I'd never post it or do anything with those ones because that'd be plagiarism.)
@@cheddarcheezit2647 Especially for improving yourself, tracing can be very helpful! As long as you don't trace other people's art and post it as your own, like you said!
I so needed this. I have such trouble with turnarounds the 3/4 view especially
I hope this was helpful! 3/4 view can be a pain. I have a video on turnarounds (but not 3/4 in that one yet!) maybe I should do one on just the 3/4 view eventually -» ua-cam.com/video/3gvdGDc1WWM/v-deo.html
@@DonCorgi thank you! It’s been a big help. If you do ever do a video on tips on doing 3/4 views I would definitely appreciate it, but I’m slowly going through all your videos and they’ve been an amazing help

yeah but... HOW to keep then consistant when designing the turn-around/expression sheets ? 😅
