This is a really valuable video. I'm a professional writer, but for years I've been wanting to make a comic and combine my writing with my drawing hobby. This gives me some clear ways to get organized and ultimately prove to myself that I can do the art side of it. Ooh! It’s been three years. Have you published your comic somewhere or have you changed your mind and directed your talents elsewhere? If you’ve already made the comic I’d love to check it out. :)
@@mommy-mar Ended up learning 3D modeling instead, in Blender. Plus, a hundred other writing projects that have taken my attention. I am almost at the point now where I can make my character models in 3D with clean topology, render them with cartoon shading (actually have a lot of those shaders and techniques worked out), and make my comic that way instead of drawing them. It’ll look drawn, but it’ll be a very flexible way of doing things. I could also do animation relatively easily. Not all the pieces are in place, however. A couple of them I may want to revisit. Check back on me in another three years, and maybe I’ll have started the comic by then. I wrote a bunch of scripts though, most of the world building is in notes, got some general outlines for a bunch of other chapters. Who knows, I’ve been developing the comic since probably 2008 or 2007. It may be more than three more years before I finally publish. But I’m not really working on it currently. Model sheets are fun! Something I've noticed more and more as I cross between mediums is that the final product in one medium becomes the reference in another. Models are a way of summarizing the things you need to reference the most for animation, but the model usually comes after doing concepts, and the concepts might come from a story idea, which in turn might have come from some general themes and research. Just like how it never totally matters that your lines are perfect, it never totally matters that any one part of the process has been nailed down, just that you can put it in some kind of healthy iterative cycle that develops the concepts farther. A reason to go for T-pose or its common relatives A-pose and star-pose, is if you want the model sheet to be transferred into a 3D package directly. 3D animation rigs prefer having the base be "in between" the extremes so that things don't stretch too much which is why these poses have become common. The modelling process is most straightforward when you can put your references into your 3D view and essentially trace the outlines, because then all your effort can go to technical details like the topology, so it often works out that the model sheets in 2D will start in these poses too.
Something I love about LavenderTowne is that she doesn't spend an entire calling out others and uses an example of herself like she is teaching us from her past experiances and I guess it helps me learn much better knowing she did the same I might have did
This is really helpfull, I recently started to design my own characters, at this point I consider myself skilled enough to make a good character, not only to draw with correct anatomy, but giving it a good story and make it look interesting, at least the most basic things, I haven't made one yet. Also I love your style and it helps me a lot!!!
I remember watching this about a year ago. I wasn't as serious about my work and definitely wasn't confident in my ability to do something like this. Today, I opened my drawing program and told myself I was finally going to do a turnaround sheet for my character. Looking at sheets online didn't seem like enough, then I remembered this video, and I went straight to it to get tips. Not to my surprise, you helped so much! Thanks for everything!!
I am so glad I found your channel. I'm a major perfectionist so I usually get really discouraged and give up for long periods of time. Your content helps me to keep learning and drawing. 💙💙💙
You sound so much happier and more confident in this video than in a lot of your older ones. You're really improving on these! The points are super helpful, too ^^
Can you redesign Danganronpa characters? Ilysm! Edit: I now know you did once, but maybe you could make a series were you redesign each of the main trios. Thanks!
5:17 - A simple solution to this hat problem is to treat it like Mickey's ears or Angeldust's hair. No matter what direction she's facing, it'll be turned exactly the same way (unless she's flipped, of course).
i really like the design of planchette's shoulders especially. the way that they're skulls, and that the frills resemble teeth is awesome, and i never noticed until seeing this model sheet. I guess that goes to show one of the important roles these things play
Hello! I just finished your Webcomic on this cute witch and I don't know if you'll see this but I would like you to know that I really love your character designs. I mean the skulls on the puffy sleeves on her dress? That's genius ♥
Thank you so much for making this video when you did. After finding and watching this video, I figured that when I draw my characters, I only rarely draw them at different positions and angles. Your tips were very useful and I adore your art style. I also tried drawing all these positions(they didn't turn out great).
This is really helpful! I often find myself looking back at my previous drawing of a character in order to draw them again, and it would be a lot easier to just have a reference sheet nearby:)
This is SOOOO helpful! Thank you! I started writing a long comic, by page 62 the main character looked completely different from the first page. I'll use this now and hopefully keep the rest of them consistent!
This is actually really convenient of a video for me right now! Thank you so much!!! Also it's awesome to see how incredibly well your channel has been doing lately. I'm glad that you're getting so much recognition for your hard work. I just hope it doesn't become too hard to stay afloat in the sea of comments. Also, those references you showed around 1:30 made me so happy! I loved watching those movies when I was little!
2:29 "They'll be consistent within this episode" once i saw an episode of su where between a shot reverse shot Pearl's nose went from a more dorito like shape, to an incicle shape. 😐
Miguel is, and will always be, my favorite character from, “The Road to El Dorado” He’s such a peach, truly a great “god.” Miguel’s got a heart of gold, he’s such a lovable character
I’ve committed myself mentally to making a Webtoon comic. I’ve realised, a little into character design, a few things; I can’t draw men, I suck at motivating myself, and I can’t draw perspective. I trust that eventually, through the demand for results from my drawing, I’ll get better at those things. Still, it’s gonna be a rough start. Help.
Someone like so i can come back to this later when i have a note pad, but this gave me an idea for a character concept for a girl with hair that works similar to a mood ring.
I really appreciate how specific and practical your advice is. It’s incredibly helpful. Also feels like I’m getting art-school wisdom passed along to me since I’m self-taught. Lol
This was super helpful! I'm always creating characters for fan fictions, fandom etc and I'm always drawing them so this really did help since I want to share my art as well.
Don't worry about it just draw when you draw the characters a bit differently from shot to shot that isn't so bad you are getting better at drawing your Characters they will always look slightly different over time. The real challenge is drawing other people's charcaters.
Thanks Lavender! I have been trying for months to master this, but with exams coming and so little time, I have been having problems with character models and finding my style and with my teacher's not -so-constructive criticism that I draw too anime like and not realistic enough...I am stressing out and it's the week before my final exams... I have seen one of you videos that talks about finding your style, but the pressure on me is making me lose focus and the frustration is really tearing me down...I can,t digitally draw a ref sheet because my computer charger isn't working and my tablet cord is frayed, so I have to do everything by hand and I lost some sleep over it... But, other than that...by on the video. ^^
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I've been considering starting to learn animation so this really helped me and I am going to be making model sheets for my characters too! >U
You're definitely right when I made my comic book I drew my characters from tons of angles as well as expressions If you do that it's very easy to complete your story without worrying about what the look like. 🙂
This is the video that i’ve been searching for since I started designing ocs and I couldnt find any tips for that so now my fav youtuber made it so I’m super happy & grateful 💗

also compare heights to other characters with a gird of like one square per 2 inches so you know the exact comparison between heights

The modelling process is most straightforward when you can put your references into your 3D view and essentially trace the outlines, because then all your effort can go to technical details like the topology, so it often works out that the model sheets in 2D will start in these poses too.
i tend to get words stuck in my head, sometimes i get “hey everybody it’s lavendertowne!!” Stuck
Me--
Watching this while making a character reference sheet
You--
"Try to resist putting them in a t-pose"
Me, finished with the drawing--
"....oops"
Making model sheets are one of my favorite things about the animation process
I'm really proud of her for going out of her comfort zone and drawing in 3D angles ❣️
Thanks!
Anime Trash she actually did!
yUSsS
yeet yeet Oh shit! I remember now!
5:17 - A simple solution to this hat problem is to treat it like Mickey's ears or Angeldust's hair. No matter what direction she's facing, it'll be turned exactly the same way (unless she's flipped, of course).
I would LOVE to watch a video of you talking about your comic characters and drawing them
I’ve started a comic recently and this helped a lot thank you so much!
Haley: You shouldn't really make your characters t-pose when on a model sheet
Me: *thinks of white diamond*
My favorite thing to draw. I love concept art and sheets like this so I love learning how to make them better. Thanks so much!
I am currently finishing thr design of my characters for a comic. This really helped, thank-you so much!!
i really like the design of planchette's shoulders especially. the way that they're skulls, and that the frills resemble teeth is awesome, and i never noticed until seeing this model sheet. I guess that goes to show one of the important roles these things play
Hello! I just finished your Webcomic on this cute witch and I don't know if you'll see this but I would like you to know that I really love your character designs. I mean the skulls on the puffy sleeves on her dress? That's genius ♥
yesyesyesyes!!!! i’ve been thinking about my ocs again and i’ve been missing these types of design and help videos!! we love perfect timing!!
Me: Look, this is Planchette.
Friend: she got some big thighs
The gif looks so cool... thats great advice i needed that thankyou 💜
Even companies need's to take notes form this
(°ロ°)
Thank you so much for making this video when you did. After finding and watching this video, I figured that when I draw my characters, I only rarely draw them at different positions and angles. Your tips were very useful and I adore your art style. I also tried drawing all these positions(they didn't turn out great).
yesss ily lav, i 100% needed this 😭
This is really helpful! I often find myself looking back at my previous drawing of a character in order to draw them again, and it would be a lot easier to just have a reference sheet nearby:)
Someone missed the like button, this video is perfect
This is SOOOO helpful! Thank you! I started writing a long comic, by page 62 the main character looked completely different from the first page. I'll use this now and hopefully keep the rest of them consistent!
T-poses are mostly for translating into 3d programs. Comic model sheets run with different rules.

"They'll be consistent within this episode" once i saw an episode of su where between a shot reverse shot Pearl's nose went from a more dorito like shape, to an incicle shape. 😐
Miguel is, and will always be, my favorite character from, “The Road to El Dorado”
He’s such a peach, truly a great “god.”
Miguel’s got a heart of gold, he’s such a lovable character
I’ve committed myself mentally to making a Webtoon comic. I’ve realised, a little into character design, a few things; I can’t draw men, I suck at motivating myself, and I can’t draw perspective. I trust that eventually, through the demand for results from my drawing, I’ll get better at those things. Still, it’s gonna be a rough start. Help.
LavenderTowne, you're my only source of inspiration right now. I'm struggling with art block but your videos help me get inspired!
I'm about to start a comic and this is such a helpful video. Thank you :]
Well, I did this with my characters a while ago. I mostly did everything in this video, even the rotation GIF. Good to see I did everything right. ^-^
"Sometimes, different episodes are animated in different studios"
Oh, that's what happened to pokemon-
You should do more videos of designing characters! I love watching them and just love your style!💕✨
I love to do this all the time for my own charcaters for fun. I'm a geek. Funny thing I am working on one right now for Animation class.
Someone like so i can come back to this later when i have a note pad, but this gave me an idea for a character concept for a girl with hair that works similar to a mood ring.
You should do anime girls being turned in your style! E.g. Yandere-Chan, Sailor moon, Voilet...
I really appreciate how specific and practical your advice is. It’s incredibly helpful. Also feels like I’m getting art-school wisdom passed along to me since I’m self-taught. Lol
Hello, I just want to say that I love your videos, and love you drawings! Keep it up girl! 💖💖💖
This was super helpful! I'm always creating characters for fan fictions, fandom etc and I'm always drawing them so this really did help since I want to share my art as well.
Aaaaah this is the main thing I struggle when drawing comics 😭
Don't worry about it just draw when you draw the characters a bit differently from shot to shot that isn't so bad you are getting better at drawing your Characters they will always look slightly different over time. The real challenge is drawing other people's charcaters.
I love character design sheets, they're always so inspiring :o
Anime: I’m gonna have to stop you right there
Art skills: Yeah! What she said!
Me: I hate you all....
You're definitely right when I made my comic book I drew my characters from tons of angles as well as expressions
If you do that it's very easy to complete your story without worrying about what the look like. 🙂
I'm doing an art study on Kasey Golden. Not that anyone asked, just thought I'd say.
This is the video that i’ve been searching for since I started designing ocs and I couldnt find any tips for that so now my fav youtuber made it so I’m super happy & grateful 💗
i am just 12,
are you expecting me to understand all of this?
*_yes_*
(edit: i was 13 when i wrote the comment and i don't remember or know why it says "12". i think cause i tend to confuse it easily. but ye i think ima understand it now
edit 2: g'dae am 14 rn and i start to hate gacha life videos :D also the past few minutes i've been doing some stuff with my keyboard ♣░ ←i can now get these with my keyboard instead of copy paste from google)
sokatschu AW LOL
@@LiveLoveAnime66 why "aw"? :I
Gacha
Well if you're a young artist even just listening to these can help you. I wish I had these videos when I was younger lmao
@@ss-cp2uy lmao ay i think if i rewatch it now ima understand it.
I have no consistency in my character drawings. It's mostly the hair and the specific eyeshape that trips me up
Your Character reminds me of Marisa from Touhou :) Not that I'm accusing you of 'copying' or something stupid, but I just like the style of clothing.
1:52 FANTASTIC MR FOX
This Amino add... Aaaa Ibuki! My favourite girl!
exactly what i thought!!
yeah ibuki's great
In the beginning, she said she loved Ibuki! Honestly same girl same. 🎸🎸
Click.Clack.Lavendertowne always got our back.
Too bad I don`t have an oc.
I love how this video is both informative and shady @ SU without even trying. Especially the height differences and “mood ring” characters (cough cough lapis and peridot)
