Just a big thank you for everyone who clicked that like button, this video already has more likes than other videos with 3-4 times the amount of views! You all rock!
I do just want to say that over the past couple of months I have followed many different artists who have informational videos, and they have all helped me but you’re the only one that has a wider spectrum of videos to help improve art, making a comic, webtoons, writing, et cetera. Because of that I think I am retaining information so much better because you teach each topic in a consistent manner and I’m retaining things easier. So thank you so much for the effort and time you’re putting in these videos, it has helped me improved so much in such a small amount of time.
Thank you so much for your comment. That really means a lot to me. So happy I've been able to help you on your art journey. Let me know if you ever have any specific questions.
Usually what I do is draw my character a lot, once I find a design or a specific drawing I really like I’ll study how to replicate the qualities I like about it. I find that doing some quick sketches of the character helps me push their unique features a little more. I haven’t done real turn around yet, so I’ll give it a go!
I think the hardest thing for me when I have a new character, since my art is a little cartoony, is trying to figure out what the face is actually doing in 3d space, like is the jaw jutting forward or falling back. 3d spatial depth is a huge weakness of mine. The turnarounds help me think through it.
This honestly feels reassuring ☺️ Even tho I've noticed for a long time some artists don't make their characters look consistent all the time, there is still that little pressure of wanting to make them look the same in my drawing. The landmark thing is pretty helpful, thank u so much for this vid! Can I also ask if u could make a vid of how to age characters? Like what an infant's facial structure would usually be like and their difference from teens, adults, and elderlies?
Yeah, I may be able to do that. Do you mean drawing characters of different ages or do you mean drawing the same character but growing from a baby to an old person throughout the story?
Ghenesa Paulma idk if this will help, but you could try changing height, posture, more ‘mature’ expressions, adding wrinkles overtime, hair growth or colour or style?
Great vid. I'm working on my first webcomic for webtoon and consistency is one of the biggest things I struggle with, art-wise. Your videos are a huge help. I also started reading Haxor yesterday and it's awesome so far. I love the MC and her crazy hair reminds me of my own. :)
4:20 That can clearly be seen in manga and anime. All of the character facial structures are the same, however there are different accessories or hair styles which make you able to distinguish which character is which.
Found this channel just a couple of days ago and I can’t believe the quality of the content thats hidden inside it. Even specific problems like this is getting analyzed and solved with a video 5 minutes long. Amazing work, one of my biggest inspirations for making my own webcomic.
Thank you! Just happy the videos are helping and making a difference. I appreciate you watching and your comment. Good luck with your comic, let me know if you ever have any questions.
Another great tip video! It is sometimes really hard to makes all characters different, coloring does helps, but changing hairstyle and accessories are important for me
Haha Walter at his best 😂 The SSS method, is really smart and super duper straightforward. Even if I like to rely on something more anatomy based (i luuuv anatomy). But I'm gonna use partSSS of thisSSs method anyways because it's so practical advice!! Well, a good big thank you Mr Ostlie!
I worry a little about doing more "artsy" videos, because art is so personal and I don't want artists to think that this is the only way to do it. It's important to see how a bunch of different artists hand the same problem, and then pick your favorites and blend them. So yeah, totally get what you're saying ;-)
Thanks Walter!! Not sure how your videos are always spot on with what I'm struggling with...you're like a magic comic creator guide! Either way I'm grateful!! Keep being you! (:
I got a magic eye that sees the future by defeating a science wizard when I was teleported to steampunk alternate dimension. It's really useful for making youtube videos.
This is really helpful. My strong area is drawing very tentative one-offs with very distinct expressions , but it's tough to turn that into anything I could make into a repeated thing. Interestingly, and I apologize if this was said before (I hate endposting, but I also am too tired to read 160 comments), the tip for the singularity heads is almost exactly how my faceblind friends seem to navigate the world. They can't really discern facial geometry and proportions and instead look at hair, ornamentation, accessories (and clothes). So while I'm agonizing over subtle details, if some of the people looking at my picture are also faceblind, it may not be nearly as important as ensuring that I don't give three ladies the same Edwardian "cottage loaf" hairstyle. :) You've gained a subscriber! Thanks for your output!
this is great! I wish we just got this video at art school instead of "lol just make a character sheet without explanation what a character sheet is and needs"
Walter Ostlie the art school I went to made me very depressed. I came there to learn and I guess I learned to bs? I asked feedback on anatomy and the answer was ‘idk maybe use a different color’... I found out that they didn’t care about illustration and they saw it as the least important study at the school, and in general after 2 years I learned way less than the time in my holidays I spent with UA-cam. The talking to and meeting other artists was nice, but that’s all I think was good about my experience (with a few exceptions, from every bad experience there is still something to learn!) So anyways corona came and my classes got cancelled for a while, and it was going so well at home I didn’t want to go back anymore. So I’m gonna try to set something up on my own now ^w^ I hope to publish my WEBTOON coming September! Sorry if that was a bit long haha
@@CaitlinBongers Sorry to hear that your school experience wasn't great. I have all kinds of opinions about college in general. I dropped out of college for a computer science degree and never did art school. But it's great that you realized that it wasn't for you and that you could do it on your own. I think school is great for some people and not so great for other people. So I'm happy that you got something from it but also that you realized it wasn't for you. Thank you Mister. This was my number one problem. This was the same trick that was used by Masashi Kishimoto Akira Toriyama Hirohiko Araki Sui Ishida Geoff Johns. Jim Lee Stan Lee Jack Kirby That's rather nice.
So whenever a individual wants to get their character to look the same from different angles and positions, they have to do the character turnaround process with all the horizontal lines to match up the facial features?
Thanks for watching. When you post your comic on Canvas, Webtoon the company (or an employee) is not notified. The editors at webtoon do browse the canvas platform though, so there is a chance that they will see your comic at some point.
my problem is that my character is your usual anime school girl with a different hairstyle, and it's hard to check whether it look like her in the more extreme angles. It's really difficult!
extreme angles are always tough regardless of style. Look on sketchfab.com and search anime head. Maybe those 3d models will help you with those angles.
How to manage the story for a specific number of panels? when I write an episode one seems fine for panels the other episode feels like it will have more panels than the other episodes, I want to make 35-40 panels and some episode might take more because of the story how to manage the episodes and also adding a surprise/cliff hanger at ends
Good question! I struggle with this also. Sometimes, there's nothing you can do. Sometimes I have to do 60 panels, other times I have problems writing even 30 panels. I think with too many panels, you have to think of ways to clear out panels that may not be needed, or ways to combine actions. Or maybe just split it into 2 episodes. When you don't have enough panels, spend more time with pacing and cool moments, use it for character interaction and growth.
Other artist: shiiitttt!!! I can't break outta this same face syndrome Me: shut that's a blessing cuz u know if I draw ten faces it all look unique but they are of the same character
What should I do when I'm stuck at writing an episode? and I also wanted to ask why do creators change brands like turning Chanel into hanel is this because of some copyright thing?
When I want to think about my story, I go someplace quiet, no distractions. I put on healing mantra videos on youtube, put my headphones on, and just sit quietly with a notebook. I'll do that for 30 to 60 minutes. Just keeping myself company. Distractions are the enemy of creativity. If you need a break, take a walk, do some jumping jacks or stretches, yoga is great for thinking.
Oh the brands thing, it's either because they think it's funny or more likely because of copyright. Changing it slightly just avoids any potential headache. It could also be because they don't want to give chanel free advertising.
those characters have been drawn by so many people in so many different styles, that would be tough. They have their house styles which is prolly as close as you'll get.
