Aim small, miss small. Best breakdown ive ever seen. 1 good tip I got, is to video record yourself. We don't even realize how bad our form is until we see it from the outside.
Awesome 🙏🏼 Exactly right. It still helps me to this day to watch things back. Can feel one way and look a totally different way. I’ve learned that when teaching/ playing tug, if I feel like I’m moving too slowly with the progression, then I’m on the right track! 😆🙌🏻

@@delcroft7349 Thank you! I like all of those trainers as well, Dave is actually a personal friend of mine! 🙏🏼 Yes I could try and touch on that for sure. Thank you!!! THANK YOU for such an amazing video! I haven't seen this information anywhere and I do the exact mistakes you talked about!! This was really helpful! Please make more videos about tips for tug play.
Damn your videos always come at the right time! What should I do when I let my dog have the foot long tug and she starts chewing on the wrists at the sides? Thank you I admire you ! :)
Thank you That is a dog that you cannot let win the tug without a taught leash attached to it at all times. Use this video for inspiration but don’t necessarily follow exactly. Know your dog 👍🏻
Thanks! Change your mindset about that. You and your dog are not equals. It is not like taking away a fun game that your child is enjoying. They have a time and place to play, when it’s over, it’s over. Just like recess 👍🏻
With this type of content I guarantee you will be sponsored by so many companies in no time. It will be hard for you to choose who you want to accept. Great job, big fan!
Thanks! The first step to the quick release is teaching the dog to ‘switch’ to an identical toy. Have another tug in your pocket, then teach the dog the word ‘switch’ means let go and grab the other toy! The tug in its mouth becomes ‘dead’ and the new tug is ‘alive’ 👍🏻 For the full bite, create lots of tension on a shallow grip, pull pull pull then release the tension and the dog should dive into the grip bc they’re were barely hanging on. Once they do this let them win the toy then rinse and repeat 🙏🏼
Killer Focused video! Awesome. Damn I was doing some of those misses and then pulling back n forth...after watching "Cabral" videos! Your technique just makes so much more sense!!! Thanks!...Jasper has an awesome bite can you do a video how to get such an effective quick release say on tug, ball, etc.. Thanks
Great video Andy! Also thanks for getting back to me via email it was really appreciated. My question for you is, I know in your last Q&A Ivan got brought up and he uses the concept of misses during his "possession games" to build confidence. When the dog misses Ivan suggests that you don't just give the toy/tug back to them, rather make them "chase/earn" it, and the struggle/tug begins where you eventually let your dog win. What is your take on this?
Great question! Yes this is true. My video is focused on targeting. More talking about a dog that likes to bite and knows how to tug, not a puppy who’s play drive needs improvement 👍🏻
It's really a problem on the technique ppl use to give mises , there's a Robert Cabral video explaining it very well, my mal puppy targeting might not be on point but I rarely get bit playing tug, and we do it like 3 to 4 time a day at the end of obedience training, all as sweet and short as posible to keep her busy without burning her interest. So far so good, she turned once on my arm playing tug and I made sure she understood that was not a thing to do and when she went calm again restart the tug play cuz it wasnt really a big deal, she didnt fully bite more like Im going crazy and I switch to your arm when the tug slips out so whatever, was more like a learning experience for both of us lol.
hi andy! i came across your page and have been getting a lot of wonderful insight on working with the Malinois breed. i am potentially adopting a 3 month old who has a congenital deformity in his back legs (no show or work involved for this guy). i am wondering if you have tips on how to appropriately train/work with a trainer given his special condition? he won’t be able to jump and will need wheels as an adult, but i want to maximize his potential nonetheless!
Wow, amazing, thank you for sharing 🙏🏼 Just off the top of my head, I’d recommend building mental confidence and independence. Even though he will be special needs, he still deserves to be treated like a normal dog (physical limitations considered of course) You don’t want to feel bad for the dog, this will not empower him but rather limit him further. I wouldn’t overly praise/ pet him, coddle, have him by you all the time, this will create separation anxiety which will cause a new set of problems. He may be limited, but is still a malinois. If you have a confident, matter of fact presence about yourself, command respect and live with a healthy amount of daily separation, this will actually put him at ease and allow him to thrive!
Awsome video Andy. Quick question: when you start your dog with tug like you showed BUT he does not hit between the hands what do you do? I mean if it is in the beginning missing the center may happen 🤣
Hello Andy! Thanks for the great videos! I'm following your steps but my boy still aiming at my hand or trying to bite the toy underneath no matter how close to him and what level I hold the toy. What can I do? Thank you!
Any suggestions/ dos and don’ts for playing tug with a 10week mal puppy I’d like to get into do protection training with in the future? I’m afraid something I might be doing will negatively affect him in the future
@@JeffOehlsen Unfortunately, every Malinois owner isn’t as well informed and gifted as you are Jeffrey. But I’m sure your positivity gives them something to strive for!! 😃
How do you know when your dogs targeting is ready to move to the next level? Ie. 1ft away, 2ft, 4ft, or different locations(low/high/vertical/horizontal)?
Thanks Andy. Great video. Question, Do you recommend switching up starting position for the bite. For example XX reps from sitting, XX reps from down and XX reps from standing.

If you a vertical tug and the eyes end up on the inside go back to horizontal and slowly increase the angle to keep the eyes on the outside, right?

Attach a leash to the tug and create big action anytime you let her win 💪🏼
If my dog targets well and bites it full, but once you give the reward they drop the tug and get nibbly, do you out and present again ?
I should probably keep the reward on a leash so that I can sustain resistance on it ?
