Some good Information but this dog already walks perfectly. It Would have been more interesting to See a dog, who is not socialised yet and how to handle it
I am working on socializing my Treeing Walker and now have a Catahuola on the way!! I love hounds they have such great personalities. They are so easy to work with just a bit stubborn!!
It's funny that you made that observation, cuz when I watched the video all I could think of was "Damn.. It's no one's fault, but seriously, there's like no pedestrians in the US... As a European, it looked so surreal/sad..". I think I counted 5 pedestrians in the whole clip.. It would've been hundreds if that was any town/city in Europe :) And tonnes more dogs too of course!... Not always a good thing when you're trying to socialise a dog on Day 1....
Man, this dog is already an angel. Walking nice, looking at the owner, *confident*, doesn't have his nose to the ground. Though he is like my Mal and looks like he wants to make friends with everything on 4 legs.
Is having the nose to the ground a bad thing? Mine eats cigarette buts as he used to be a stray so I let him sniff and then give him a NO if he starts to eat.
@@justacitygirl Not all the time, no! But when we're trying to go for a walk walk, or work on something outside, yeah, it can get annoying. Plus I have to watch his mouth really closely, make sure he doesn't try to eat anything, which as someone with ADHD can be a lot.
@@FenrirAldebrand I just let him eat it half the time. I figure he will learn the hard way. I think I have adhd too so it's too much work for me to concentrate on him that much and enjoy my walk. I just go with the flow and allow him to mature on his own with a nudge here and there.
@@justacitygirl Yeah, that would be fine if I lived somewhere else. Our city has a major opiate problem. So much so that I carry the nasal spray version of Narcan/Naloxone on my person for my dog in case he sniffs/eats something bad and ODs. Plus, I so could not afford an emergency vet bill.
Totally agree on how important socialization is at puppy stage. I have been guilty of neglecting in sending my little mutt to puppy school. I have since published many videos on my channel on the importance of SOCIALIZATION.
I recently rescued a Malinois that is about 2 years old. She is awesome. The only thing I struggle with is walks with her so alot of this information was majorly insightful and I see things I do wrong and that I'm doing right. Thanks for the great tips, I will definitely watch more of your content for help!
You can just walk into CVS with a dog?! WHAT? That's so cool, would not fly where I live. Great video. I want to be out walking my dog but he's on bed rest from breaking a nail
The sniffing your so right. My pitbull tries start to finish. I try to limit it despite his tenacity beginning, middle, and end. Little tricky because there are only a few places he goes number 2 since it seems to be part of his marking. 🙄
It helped me to define designated areas where the dog is allowed to sniff for a few seconds/minutes. You can even incorporate a command "go sniff", he will get the hang of it pretty quickly because the sniffing is so rewarding. Don't forget to use a command at the end of the sniffing session to get him back to the walk-mode.
I rescued my youngest Mal at 6 mos. He was terrified of everything. Wouldn’t go upstairs and was scared of my older Mal(now they’re BFFS). I’ve socialized him 3-5x week for the last 5 months but he still overreacts to other dogs and absolutely hates going inside strange buildings.
@@LauraBeeDannon dumped with his littermates. That’s all I have other than his Embark. Obviously it was a backyard breeder which explain the outcome. Nervy and unstable but super sweet with myself and family. I have hope he will gain confidence with me working him.
Yes Michael. That’s why you start with small parks, playgrounds before kids are out of school etc… then gradually move your dog to the populated areas.
Yeah probably why he chose this street. Basic training for the dog and the owner. Would you make a kid fight a professional boxer to teach him how to box?. Start small start easy, step it up when he improves.
@robert I have a female malinois that was socialized but she doesn’t like others so I can’t take her anywhere.. she’s extremely high prey driven and very aggressive when in her kennel/ barrier aggressive 😢 I’ve tried to get her to stop but can’t.
😮 You desperately need a top notch trainer. That only gets worse with Mals if you don't have superior help. Most trainers cannot handle them. It takes someone very special and then, you have to follow up 24/7. I speak from experience with a Malinois X.
I’ve had her since she was 4 months old she’s 5 now.. she started it when I first got her but I corrected her right away because I have 2others that will and can put her in her place they will fight till one of them loses unfortunately 💔😢 but I don’t ever let it get that far at all… blue heelers are so notorious for that..
@@amyedwards5169 if you had her since she was young and shes 5 now maybe your form of correction isnt correct. when you say she doesnt like others do you mean dogs people or both?
I have a year old mali cross she didn't get the socializing she should have and now I'm playing catch up. How do you suggest I teach her to "play nice" and not drag me across the yard to get to people or other dogs?
Watching this video, and I was finding this mal has the same challenges in terms of staying down. This is a seemingly long work in progress. We have gotten better with this, as I am sure you have as well. We added pressing walk buttons at intersections to help engaged; although, the double-edged sword there is it became an obsession.
How many dog owners have dog-reactive/aggressive canine pets? AFIK there may be *millions of us with a dog that will not be sufficiently socialized . Can every dog be "saved" ... ? Hypothetically I would guess Yes. Practically speaking No. I occasionally shudder to think who would care for my gorgeous 4 yr old, 65lb blue Pit Ellie were I gone. I heard from a good professional GSD/Mal trainer that Pits are "dumb as rocks" I would add stubborn to that. I've done lots of training with her but not enough to curb dog aggression. When you drill down, worst case senarios are not common but will spoil all social walks because you just can't risk it. Lucky for her, Ellie has my heart, home, and resources... I'm retired, have a large fenced yard for our home base... I take her virtually everywhere, but on a short leash.
I have a 1-year-old malinois pit mix who is scared of cars to the point where if he sees one, he's bolting the other way and won't go into my front yard unless I'm basically dragging him (I haven't done this nor willI I do that) I live in a semi quiet area, next to a road, but it's normally quiet unless it's lunch and rush hour how can I socialize him again? And for him to not be afraid
My Mal was 4 when we adopted her, and absolutely terrified of cars (she would cower when one passed us). I would start with having your dog just look at a parked car from a distance (have high value treats or a toy on hand). If there's no reaction, reward (you will probably spend months on just this). After you're successful with this, then you can gradually go closer. It takes time and a lot of patience, but you'll get there!
My mal missed the early social stuff basically a junk yard dog who doesn't discriminate when it comes to threat analysis... enforces a bark at everything in sight at any distance policy
Socializing a dog doesn’t mean going to dog parks or every single store. Only trained service dogs are allowed in non pet friendly places. Dog parks are going to do way more harm than good.
CVS. in Vermont is dog friendly, I was surprised. Maybe in other states also. There are more dog friendly stores. Did some research while training my Shepherd for pet therapy. Barnes Noble, Home Goods, Home Sense, Hobby Lobby. Many banks, they even give dog treats.
Very impressive, my dog should be so anti-social. But I don’t want to see you pulling clean dishes out of the dishwasher, I want to see what the dishes look like before you put them in. My large dog is standing on his hind legs choking himself trying to get to other dogs. Do you have the before video you could link for us?
@@mjl.9-19 been taking him since a puppy to training and still at it. Just got a new instructor that isn’t all rewards based. Food does not motivate him.
Some dogs are more interested in dogs than other dogs. And, if you always have let him sniff /socialize with other dogs, the dog will expect contact with the other dogs, and he will pull towards them. If you are interested in teaching the dog walk besides you without pulling towards other dogs I would recommend you to watch Beckman's dog training.
If you ever find a solution, please let me know. My rescue came outside her puppy year and it is a struggle. Everyone is like go to UA-cam but almost every youtube training video is a puppy.

Walking on a leash and socializing are two different things

Ziggy great young dog. Nice to see the loose lead. Robert superb trainer.
I'm fascinated by city folks walking with their dogs. Like another world. I live in very rural Alaska, not many places to socialize my dog.
