He has a lot of great songs like Same Ole Lang Syne, Run For the Roses, Longer, Hard To Say Missing You, and Power of Gold. I always thought he was highly underrated!
He was such an amazing storyteller. "Another Auld Lang Syne" is a beautiful Christmas song that makes me cry every time I hear it. He left us too soon.
Dan was a soothing favorite for me in HS and College. When things were down.....he helped. Try "Netherlands" one of the first songs he wrote as a teen. Amazing artist. RIP Dan. The end of the song is a sectiop of a Beatles song...

Dan & I shared a hometown, Peoria,Il, we were the same age, went to different schools. He passed far too soon, and it felt like I lost a brother, although we had never met. His music was & always will be our connection, I think it was just a " Part Of The Plan". Thanks DAN!
I don't remember this being a hit for Dan, but it is a very well-known song by the Cascades in 1962 when it went to #3 on Billboard's Top 100 and #1 on the Easy Listening chart. It was written by one of the Cascades and is frequently played on classic or 60's radio stations. When you are in the mood for some pre-Beatles music, you might like this song.
I'm not finding it released by Dan as a single but it surely would have done well on the Adult Contemporary Charts. Dans version has a much slower tempo and more soulful interpretation of the Cascades offering in 1962@@chrisoakley5830
This is a lovely cover of the 1962 hit by The Cascades (with a little quote from "Rain" by The Beatles at the end), but covers rarely show what an artist is all about. (This was the last single Dan ever released; it didn't make the main Billboard chart.) What would be more on point is Dan's *own* work, such as his biggest hit "Longer" or "Hard to Say" or "Run for the Roses". That last one is now the official song of the Kentucky Derby, so you'll get a chance to hear it next Saturday. Also, Dan's collaboration with Tim Weisberg, "The Power of Gold" should not be missed.
It bugs me when they react to remakes when the originals are usually so much better. It's not their fault, so much as the people recommending songs without telling them. I mean, who are these people they're taking their requests from?!
Agreed. This is a really good cover of a classic song, but doesn’t show his greatest strength, which is his songwriting. There’s so many gems in his own songbook.
@kevin farrell I'll check out Jacky Wards version. I've not heard that one. There are a few covers I enjoy more than the originals, two of them happen to be Rolling Stones covers. Linda Ronstadt's "Tumbling Dice" and Bette Midler's "Beast of Burden"
Twin Sons Of Different Mothers, Dan's 1978 duo album with flautist Tim Weisberg, had a little known sequel called No Resemblance Whatsoever after Epic dropped Dan and he went more or less indie. Some nice stuff on the second album too, notably the Jobim-like Is This Magic.
The original of this was written and recorded by the Cascades. It's more up-tempo and a classic example of the one-hit wonder. At the end there he was singing part of "Rain" a Beatles track by John Lennon. It was the first major track to use backwards tracking of the tape.
There is a song that was a number 1 hit in the early 70's. Many of your viewers will remember and love this song. It is "My Maria" by B.W. Stevenson. He is another singer that died way too young. He had an operation, and died 3 days later at the age of 38 from an infection.
Can't believe it is only the second song from this outstanding performer. Try Longer or Heart Hotel or Auld Lang Syne. You guys won't be disappointed!!

Dan's music did well on the charts and he had 16 top 40 songs on the US Adult Contemporary Charts. There were many other songs that I sure thought should have been released as singles: To the Morning, Wysteria, Morning Sky (could have been a great bluegrass hit), Comes and Goes, Give Me Some Time, Since You've Asked (a great cover of the Judy Collins tune), Along the Road, Only the Heart May Know (a great duet with Emmy Lou Harris), Tuscon, AZ (Gazette) (a long tune telling a tragic story with some amazing guitar work), Believe In Me, Go Down Easy, Seeing You Again (my personal favorite), Sunlight (a cover of a Jesse Colin YOung song from '76), and Song Bird (with Tim Weisberg). Dan was an amazing writer, musician, and singer. I got to see him in concert 3 times and 2 of them were just him solo (including one in his home town of Peoria, IL.
Wow, I loved Dan Fogelberg (RIP dear one). His voice was like a warm blanket, even on harder edge songs. The first album of his I bought was "Souvenirs" from 1974. This is such a great version of this song! He has written and sang some really great songs of his own! You have listened to lots of Beatles songs but he pays homage to them with a line from their song Rain as it fades out!
Ah. My kind of DF fan. Those aren't the familiar hits. Except for Longer, all my favourite Fogelberg songs are "deep cuts" never heard on radio. (Was delighted to find recently that there is a karaoke version of Believe In Me...)
Originally done by the Cascades back in the early 60's. The guys were shipmates with my father and we had them to our house for Thanksgiving when this song was a hit on the radio by them. I love the remake here but the original with John, Dave and the others will always have a place in my heart. My sister still has the album they signed for her on that day.
Let me suggest his song "Souvenirs" from the album of the same name. Dan is one of my favorite 70s/80s artists. So many great songs. A little bit of trivia for the Dan Fans...he wrote three songs that were recorded by the country rock band Fool's Gold: "Choices," co-written by T. Kelly and D. Henson, "Old Tennessee," and "Love Me Through And Through." And for a really great collaboration album, Dan's album "Twin Sons Of Different Mothers" with Tim Weisberg. Thanks for reviewing ROTR.
Dan was a great and thoughtful artist. Performed many good songs as listed in these comments. One of my favorites of his was called The Reach. It was about an area where he lived and sailed. A beautiful song.
The end of this song…”When the rain comes…”. Was a lyric from The Beatles, “Rain!” Love that ending, that tribute to The Beatles! Dan’s Run for the Roses song is the official song for the annual Kentucky Derby horse race…everyone who loves horse racing knows it! They will play it on Saturday, May 6 at the Kentucky Derby!!! Great song! Dan’s very famous song, Same Auld Lang Syne…great storyteller that he is….gotta hear that one!!
The last part about "When the rain comes..." is actually from the Beatles tune "Rain." And as mentioned by others, the overall song "Rhythm of the Rain" is a rare cover by Dan, almost all of his other tunes are his own. "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Longer" are absolute MUSTS.
Great singer songwriter. Every song tells a story. He's uptempo on Power of Gold, storytelling best on Tucson, Arizona, and my fave is Heart Hotels. All his songs have those soothing horns!
Dan Fogelberg YES. You can't go wrong with a Fogelberg song. He was so talented, he did all types of tunes, Rock, Jazz, Country Rock, Classical, even did a Bluegrass album. I echo what many others have said gone too soon. To many great songs to even start to suggest just pick one you won't regret it. PS don't wait so long next time. Love your growth in music, take care.
Omg! DAN! Yes we need much more of this. I think one of these days you should react to his Greetings from the west concert...available on youtube/dvd/etc.
Great talent, multi-instrumentalist, will be missed. R.I.P. My favs, "Longer" (1979), "Same Old Lang Syne" (1980), and "Leader of the Band" (1981). Thanx so much, take care, many blessings
It's almost Derby time. You should have done Run For the Roses. Seems like I always hear that song somewhere around the first Saturday in May, when they actually do the run for roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Same Old Lang Syne might be one of the best songs ever written by anyone, anywhere. The story behind it is 100% his and real too. Gotta do this one soon. You won’t be disappointed.
You guys gotta do "Power of Gold" by Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisburg in the "Live Greetings from the West" concert footage. Two absolute masters with a great band. Mind blowing!!!!
Dan Fogleberg is the king of the wedding ballad. Which is such a small part of his musical journey. If you’ve ever heard his “Power of Gold” or “Face the Fire” the world would know that Dan can rock and play the heck out of that Fender.
That last part is from a Beatles song, "Rain." A good one to try, by the way! Also, the Kentucky Derby is coming up on May 6, and the tv coverage here in Louisville always plays Dan Fogelberg's "Run for the Roses" at some point during the day. Beautiful song about a thoroughbred born and raised in Kentucky. Could you maybe react to that one next week to go along with the Derby? That would be so very cool.🐎🐎🐎 Thanks, guys, for all the happiness you bring.
The Cascades original went to #3 on Billboard in 1963 and was #4 overall for the year (lots of great songs in '63), iconic and great sounding song. The original featured thunder and rain effects and use of a celeste and a guy's conversation with the rain after his girl left him. A little bit of The Beatles song Rain is covered (one of Ringo's favorite drum pieces). :)
This is one of the few songs he recorded that he didn't write. If you listen to his cover of Muddy Waters' "Blow Wind Blow" you won't believe it's the same guy. His voice is gritty with a hard edge on it. He's known for his love songs but Fogelberg's well is deep: jazz, blues, bossa nova, rock & roll, country, bluegrass...
You both would absolutely LOVE “The Reach,” “Longer” and “Magic Every Moment” from Dan. A true artist and poet. I grew up listening to those 3 in particular.
Here are some of his songs to dive into...."Longer", "Same Old Lang Syne", "Run For The Roses". My personal favorites are....."Believe In Me", "Only The Heart May Know"(with Emmy Lou Harris) and "Ghosts", this song is very intense, but I love it.
That song was written in haste so as to give that mainly instrumental album a potential radio single. Dan flew to Europe on vacation and to hide from the critical pasting he expected over the album. But Power Of Gold was a moonshot and turned the album into a big hit; Epic had some trouble finding Dan to give him the surprise good news!
!!!ALERT!!! !!!ALLERT!!! Kentucky Derby is in about 10 days. One of Dan Fogelberg's biggest hits is "Run For The Roses" and it's about the horses running the Kentucky Derby.
Just fantastic. The original recording had a different sort of charm, just as affecting in its way. Cudos to you guys for featuring this exceptional version!
Oh if Amber likes orchestral stuff, the whole Nether Lands album merits a listen. Dan had something like a twenty piece orchestra in the studio for that project...
Dudes, I love how many different artists and types of music you get into. For me, if you want the quintessential Dan Fogelberg experience, it is "Leader of the Band". One of the most moving songs ever recorded, it is a tribute to his father. Trust me, it is worth your time. A second to that is "Longer", a love ballad which is insanely beautiful.
"Longer" was our wedding song, and definitely deserves a listen. I also recommend "A Place In the World For a Gambler" (That was the first song I heard by him on the soundtrack to a movie called "FM". A little harder, more rocking Dan can be heard on "Power of Gold" and "Tell Me To my Face" (From an album he recorded with Flutist Tim Wiesberg. But worry not, those song rock!)
He slowed this song down a bit, originally released by the Cascades in 1962... Ya'll should check out the original, it has that classic 60's sound to it...
Hidden treasure, that little Christmas CD. And it really is a Christmas project, not just a "holiday" one; except for a sort of "echo" edit of O Tannenbaum, all the vocal numbers on it are sacred carols, no "holly jolly" claptrap. I particularly like This Endris Night and the lyrically-complete version of What Child Is This from that CD.
Ok I have a big problem.... I discovered you guys 4 nights ago and have been up to 3am on three of those nights pouring through your reactions to songs and artists that I love. Dan Fogelberg is one such artist. For your "Female Friday" selection you have to get your box of tissues out and check out Winona Judd doing "Is It Over Yet?" You have reacted to her singing with her mom (The Judds) doing "Grandpa" and you liked her voice. Also, if you want to swing back around to Steely Dan, get into "Deacon Blues", it's tight!
Dan was performing at an outdoor event back when I was in my early 20s (I'm 69 now). We'd bought tickets ahead of time. A storm came up. The outdoor event was canceled. However, Dan wanted to honor those who had already bought their tickets. We were since to the local armory. He walked out with a guitar, no other band members, and gave one heck of a 2 hour show for us. There was a house piano there, which he played also. A few years later, we saw him live at the Palace Theater in Louisville with his band. Another amazing performance. But, nothing compared to his solo performance in that old armory.
With the upcoming Christmas season, I was hoping that you’d play and listen to Old Lang Syne by none other Dan Fogleburg. This song is a bittersweet type of love and loss song set on Christmas Eve it’s what I consider my favorite Christmas song.
This wasn’t one of Dan’s songs, he just covered it marvelously!! It has been covered by a ton of singers from the 60’s and 70’s but originally done by the cascades
This cover version feels like an adult version of the original. I love The Cascades song because of the nostalgic feeling. The little sounds of the rain and thunder, the bell sounds (and the 'pitter patter' ;)). But Dan Fogelberg's version does have some sax!
He wrote some very heartfelt, emotional music. Missing You is a personal favorite of mine. It really resonates with those times we are away from loved ones and just want to be back home.
One of my favorite artists. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. He wrote so many great songs such as "Longer", "Leader Of The Band", "Hard To Say", "Missing You", "Make Love Stay", "Run For The Roses", "Same Old Lang Syne", "The Language Of Love", "Believe In Me" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.
This is a cover from the group the Cascades 1963 with the ending a part cover of The Beatles" Rain" which is a fantastic song. Over all great cover and I enjoy Dan Fogelberg! Thank you
Great updated version, but let's get the history straight on this song: [from Wikipedia so I don;t have to type lol]: "Rhythm of the Rain" is a song [originally] performed by The Cascades, released in November 1962. It was written by Cascades band member John Claude Gummoe. On March 9, 1963, it rose to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and spent two weeks at number 1 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart." So Fogelberg did NOT write the song, and most adults already knew the song at the time he did it. If a song has any good substance it can be done in any style. He did a great job turning this into a "torch ballad" with a funky soul feeling. The sax solo became quite a common thing on records in the 1980's, although this was in 1990. Billy Joel helped start lots of sax solos on many of his records in the late 1970's, as well as groups like Earth Wind and Fire, etc. Sounds like at the end they sang a piece of the Beatles "Rain" song.
You absolutely need to listen to “There’s a Place in the World for a Gambler”, “Nether Lands”, “Longer” and “Power of Gold”. All fantastic songs by one of the best (and most underrated) singer-songwriters.
Love that you listened to Dan. He was an amazing musician, songwriter and singer. His albums are beautiful, start to finish. Yes, he was very creative and experimented with a variety of sounds. Saw him live many times. Gone way too soon due cancer.
He was such a talent. RIP Dan. I had the opportunity to see him live in the early 90 s great show and the voice and performance was great. Always great music.

Dan was a great and thoughtful artist. Performed many good songs as listed in these comments. One of my favorites of his was called The Reach. It was about an area where he lived and sailed. A beautiful song.
Mine too!❤
I always feel blessed when I hear DF singing. Great artist
One of my favorite Dan Fogelberg songs! Thank you for this reaction!
Great singer songwriter. Every song tells a story. He's uptempo on Power of Gold, storytelling best on Tucson, Arizona, and my fave is Heart Hotels. All his songs have those soothing horns!
I like how he tagged the Beatles song "Rain" at the end.
His "Longer " was played at our wedding. Kentucky Derby coming up check out "Run for the Roses"
"Longer" was the first dance at our wedding. It's a beautiful, simple song that says it all.
Have you heard his album with Tim Weisberg "Twin Sons Of Different Mothers?" Great album.
@@johntiggleman4686 Yes he actually did two albums with Weisberg, the other was called No Resemblance Whatsoever from 1995.
I had the biggest crush on him when I was in college and saw him in concert. Love his sound!!!
Omg!
Guys, treat yourselves and check out Missing You. Dan's songs are very heartfelt, and this one certainly delivers that quality.
One of my favorites, brings me back to my childhood listening to the original by the Cascades on the radio. Definitely need to check out the original.
Missing you is a very underrated song.
Love it! One of his most beautiful songs is the title song from the album 'Nether Lands.' Enjoy Dan's musical legacy.
Netherlands is as beautiful as any thing ever recorded by anyone.
Dan Fogleberg is the king of the wedding ballad. Which is such a small part of his musical journey. If you’ve ever heard his “Power of Gold” or “Face the Fire” the world would know that Dan can rock and play the heck out of that Fender.
Same Old Lang Syne, Leader of the Band, and Make Love Stay are my favorites by the late Dan Fogelberg. May he Rest in Peace.
It's been a minute since I heard this song and I've never heard Mr. Fogelberg's version before. :) This was beautiful.
I have loved Dan Fogelberg’s songs for ever. My favorite is “Wisteria”.
Ooo, an early deep cut...
A haunting and beautiful song.
Jay & Amber, only song I remember from him was "The Power of Gold" (with Tim Weisberg)!. Very good song!
Dan had so many wonderful songs. I’d love to see y’all react to “The Reach” (my personal favorite) or “Netherlands” (Amber will LOVE it….orchestra!)
Love “The Reach”!
Oh if Amber likes orchestral stuff, the whole Nether Lands album merits a listen. Dan had something like a twenty piece orchestra in the studio for that project...
Hey guys. The end part was a tribute to the Beatles and their song Rain. RIP Dan.
You HAVE to do "Same Old Lang Syne". His absolute best!
Love the tribute to the Beatles' "Rain" at the end.
As always, thanks so much for sharing.
Steve
I have always adored Dan Fogelberg. RIP.
His Christmas album, The First Christmas Morning, is in my top ten for the season. The title song is hauntingly beautiful.
I remember buying the original in 1963 by the Cascades. One of the few that Dan didn’t write himself, a great version!
the most underrated singer from the late 70's early 80's.
He passed away way too young. I wore his albums out in college.
Try Dan Fogelberg's "Part of the Plan" with Gram Nash singing background vocals and Joe Walsh's guitar solo next.
"Is It Over Yet" ua-cam.com/video/_bn1RpE-sjg/v-deo.html
The Cascades recorded this in 1962. Fogelberg's cover of it is smooth and soulful.
I love all the songs he sang. In 1980 the song "Longer" was sung at my wedding. I still cry when when I hear him sang it. Love
Dan's Song LONGER IS ONE OF TUE SWEETEST SONGS YOU WILL EVER HEARD
One of my favorite artists. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. He wrote so many great songs such as "Longer", "Leader Of The Band", "Hard To Say", "Missing You", "Make Love Stay", "Run For The Roses", "Same Old Lang Syne", "The Language Of Love", "Believe In Me" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.
Language of Love was my Ham!! That Guitar!! That Voice!! 👍🏿
It's Christmas time. You must listen to Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne.
This was released in 1963 by The Cascades
Love that you listened to Dan. He was an amazing musician, songwriter and singer. His albums are beautiful, start to finish. Yes, he was very creative and experimented with a variety of sounds. Saw him live many times. Gone way too soon due cancer.
He was such a talent. RIP Dan. I had the opportunity to see him live in the early 90 s great show and the voice and performance was great. Always great music.
One of the very best singer/songwriters ever!! Gone too soon. ❤
