It’s about horses and the Kentucky Derby, where the horses race for a blanket of roses that is received by winning The Kentucky Derby. No metaphor, just about beautiful horses, and he wrote for the Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby is otherwise known as the Run for the Roses, open to 3 year-old thoroughbred racehorses. There 's only one chance to win. I believe Dan was commissioned to write this to commemorate this yearly tradition.
Oh man haven't heard this in ages. For the Great Secretariat. At the Kentucky Derby AKA Run for the Roses. Don't think you'd be mentioning Flanks and Manes or Sire and Mare for people. No it is for a specific Horse. Yes a Trophy of roses over the shoulders of the winner.
"The Run For The Roses" aka "The Kentucky Derby " Secretariat freaked out when they placed the big banner of roses over his whithers at the winners circle celebration, after setting the (world) track record. I believe the next race was "Run for the Black Eyed Susans", where a banner of black eyed susans were placed over his whithers, but this time it didn't bug him. I remember 2 days after my 11th birthday, my dad turned on the tv and said, "Lets see if Secretariat can win the triple crown", and he did, setting track records at all three events.
When Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito was about to win his first Kentucky Derby, his horse Strike The Gold pulling clear in the stretch, he shouted "Run for the roses as fast as you can!" at the top of his lungs. There were cameras on him at the time and it was shown in the broadcast after the race. Great song.
What an interesting take on his song I never thought about - it could be a metaphor for life from birth, guided along by parents until you're old enough to go out there and take chances based on how they raised you. Thanks for the new insight :-)

Secretariat raced with such heart. He won all three races in the Triple Crown and set records in all three. Those records still stand today. In the Belmont Stakes, which is a long and brutal race, he ran faster in each successive quarter mile. Other horses slow down over distance; Secretariat sped up. When he died, his funeral was broadcast on the radio; nine eulogies were delivered. He was a genuine celebrity. He is included on the list of the 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, the only non-human on the list.
Not a metaphor. Throughout the song, there are all kinds of references to horses and thoroughbred race horses, in particular. Also, the "Run For The Roses" is a phrase describing the Kentucky Derby, which is one leg of the Triple Crown of horse racing in the U.S.
Triple crown of horse racing. Kentucky is the 1st leg 'Kentucky Derby' (roses), Maryland, 2nd leg 'Preakness' (black eyed Susans), New York is 3rd leg 'Belmont Stakes (white carnations). "Secretariat" is a good movie on the race for those three races called the Triple Crown. All three are very hard to win for that coveted title on a horse.
