I was going to say something like "wow you made this video right when I was looking to buy a beetle" but I'm not going to lie to myself... Im always looking for another beetle ;p
Great video! I love all the Beetles, but the ones I would go for are 1969 and 1971. 1969 was the first year with the updated rear suspension, and Beetles in this range of years have high back seats (anti-whiplash) and still sport the "traditional" steering wheel. A good option is the 1967 Beetle because that is the first year of the 12 volt system, yet they retain the chrome bumpers, a metal dashboard, etc. No high back seats, though! :((
You are very accurate on every statement you made there my friend! I prefer the IRS, unfortunately I didn’t end up with it this time around. But I can assure you next time I will. 😁
swing axle double joint drop spindles Have you considered writing and selling a decoder list for the doughheads among us who are overwhelmed by the amount we don't know?
first time on your channel and appreciate this video. I had a 1977 beetle back in 1982. Kept it for a couple of years and then traded it in for "new" car that I won't mention.... .damn I wish I would have kept it ....anyway the nostalgia is back big time. I love beetles and this channel is awesome... And I just subscribed. Truthfully, I've always wanted a super beetle and your tips are great but I'm going to keep looking at the other videos too for extra information and recommendations
I like the older ones overall… but I grew up with my moms 1974 green love bug edition. I had a tired 67 bug in college, bastardized with older fenders and decklid. Always kept my eyes out for a deal on another bug. Ran across a really nice 74 Love bug. and bought it as soon as he dropped the price a bit. Nice and rust free Georgia car, needs a few things, but most of the mechanicals have been restored. Just put 900 miles on it over the weekend, really fun to drive. Needs a few things yet, but the $ stuff is done. Hasn’t leaked a drop of oil yet.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Thats just awesome! Especially one that doesn't mark its spot! I like all of them, but sure do like the old ones also. Congrats on your find, and please keep me updated! If you can, go to my website, and click the members section, if you're interested, please send me photos, and a brief description. Would like to add your ride! Thank you!
Great video. I just bought a 73 super beetle for 3200 in decent shape. I'm in the process of rebuilding the front end due to the famous shake problem. The only issue I have now is I can't sleep because I keep thinking of everything I want to do to it.
That was my first project on this channel was a 73 super beetle! Congrats on your purchase! I changed every single thing on the front end of mine, I have a few videos up on here of the process. That car goes straight up to 75 mph with no shimmy. Anything you need just ask my friend. Thanks for being part of the community here. Oddly enough, I lay there in bed at night since I have trouble sleeping. Picturing all the parts in my mind that I’m going to buy. 😁
I used to have 14 of them, buggies, a bus, karmann ghia and bugs, now I only retained the karmann ghia and a 73 1200 bug, my friends are surprised that I sold them and I'm not tempted to buy another haha
@William Tanner They are truly a great car, I know they’re not fast, and they can be made to be fast. I just still am amazed by the engineering and thought process of these cars. I hope you’re doing well my friend.
@@bubot17 wow Gilbert, you had quite a few that’s for sure. I want a Ghia really bad, but that will have to wait till spring. I’ve always wanted to own one.
Right on for mentioning, “not jumping on the first one” I’m considering buying a nicer 1974, but i live in an apartment complex and wonder about maintenance not having cover.
Good info. It’s all about supply and demand. Newer cars are going up because of the lack of towel bar cars in the market place. I recently used the Hagerty evaluation guide for my 71. Needless to say I was surprised at the values. Concours 50K. Excellent 25K Good 11K Fair 6K. Now I realize that this is all subjective. But it shows that the “ people’s” car has come a long way. And by no means should anyone think that their car will get these values when selling. By the best car you can afford and have fun 🤩
They sure have gone up Gordon, there’s no doubt about that. I am actually surprised for an economy car clear back in the day are bringing this type of prices. They are such a unique vehicle, all of the air cooled ones. It surely puts a smile on my face knowing there are so many around.
Yes I agree my friend, that’s why I said there are plenty out there for sale, don’t cut them up if you don’t have to. Thank you so much for being here.
These 58-67 bug prices are climbing a little too much for me. The 68 and on are are 6k and up now out in socal. Great idea and video as always you keep pushing the needle 👍
Thanks brother, yes you’re right, 67 and back the prices are going crazy. I never thought these Volkswagen beetles would even climb that high in price.
@@SladesVWBeetle At this point I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. At least I know that I won't get robbed if decided to sell but also ruins my chances on finding a budget friendly project in the future.
@@PopularityContest there are still some budget ones out there brother, I wouldn’t overthink it. But, the prices have definitely climbed. You have a great ride, Herbie is what a lot of folks want. Old school!

You can still find good deals on buses too, as long as your not looking for a split windshield (67 and earlier) those are ridiculously priced right now. I have a 73 I picked up recently, not running but solid for 1500. You just have to get out there and look. Same goes for any type.VW except (early models) always look for rust. By the way, love that punk rocker sweet 16 photo. Lol
Yes you’re right, there are a lot of good deals out there, you just got a really luck. I live north east, so most of the stuff is rotted out here unfortunately. Unless you spend big dollars. I don’t know which photo you meant? Do you mean the poster on the wall? Suicide squad girl?
Thanks so much my friend, and thanks for always taking the time to watch the videos. It’s amazing how high the prices are going on these cars I never thought I would see that.
Thank you Kenneth! Thank you for being here. The IRS is the double jointed axles with CV joints on each end of the transmission they used starting in 1969. They did do it at 1968 only on the semi auto stick transmissions. Earlier was the swingaxle.
Can you make a video someday on properly towing a bug with a tow hitch bar with tips if you’ve done it before? My mechanic is 100 miles away & i do not want to depend on roadside services if I need to make trips, but I also have 0 experience towing anything. Anything helps!
Honestly I think that is a really good idea. I think a friend of mine has a tow bar.. I will find out in the very near future. And if he does, I will have him bring his Beetle over while mine is being worked on. And show the procedure. Thank you for taking the time to be here Gary.
You mentioned having an auto stick and converting it to a standard manual, have you done a video on that ? I've got a 74 Super and would really like to make the switch.
I have not done a video on that, I don’t have a car to utilize for it. I could probably do an explanation on it. It’s truly not that hard. Maybe I’ll do a write up, like an article. And put it on my website in the tech section.
You have to actually have the decklid unbolted, then position the spring in place...in the slot....then press the decklid into place and bolt it back up. True pain in the butt!!
