You are my favorite person
I don't know if you guys need a drummer, but you should definitely try and get this man to at least fill in on a tour. I would pay to see you guys and him in killing your tracks at a show.
whats this song called
(tl;dr) Cover is dope. Album is dope. Track is called The Edge of Time.
WHAT R U DOING HERE DADDY?
Hey Nick
Jazz-influenced metal is now my favorite genre
Check out Naked City or a handful of other John Zorn projects
Check out the album Vile Luxury by Imperial Triumphant too, the song Cosmopolis is sick
Cynic is the godfather for that lol
Check out literally everything Sean Reinert has done. Immediately.
Native Construct and Thank You Scientist are two great jazz-metal fusion bands
Zack needs to get hired by drumeo and do jazz vids
And metal vids
Pls no
@Drumeo make it happen
He has to do all vids. 😍
@Drumeo make it happen
Dude, with even like a months worth of practice in the style of metal, you could honestly be one of the scariest drummers in metal. The fast ass jazz fills and embellishments just go SO HARD with the heavy syncopated guitar riffs. Fucking sick
"I'm not playing jazz drums over metal. That would sound terrible!"
*proceeds to show how actually not terrible it is*
The smashing pumpkins half the time be like
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Yeah lots of bands use jazz flair and influence haha
Sick boogie murder - trepalium
Animals as leaders... Literally a jazz drummer who hits his drums so much harder than they need to be hit, while playing Djent. Gartska is wild
as a metal drummer, I really enjoyed this, you are right, you do put a jazz influence on it and its really nice to see, very refreshing
Facts
Matt Gartska is a great example of a drummer with jazz background playing metal
I agree!
Big facts. Metal drummer #2 agrees lol. That breakdown friggin slapped dude
Djazz
Zach: I'm not trying to play this like a jazz drummer
Also Zach: Finished fill on beat 2
😂😂😂
You made no mistake if you are a jazz drummer, it's just pure jazz
I didn't even hear any of the so-called mistakes! I thought it was brilliant!
@@tobynsaunders that’s because he comped in a new take on most of them

it sounds like the drumming in Gorod a progressive deathmetal band
Nik and Andy lowkey training Zack how to be a metal drummer so they can have him in Termina :o
CHESS NOT CHECKERS
DEAR LORD! Zack, from a follower far... far away from you... KEEP POSTING! You are one of the few that can "talk through the vibe"... Congratz for being such a sensitive musician. Greetings from a friend from Brazil.

COME TO BRAZIL!
Zack: For all you metalheads I'm sorry for what ur about to see
Also Zack:*nails the song making all of us bang our heads like there's no tomorrow*
"pretty freaking cheeks at breakdowns" proceeds to do a more musical breakdown than most metal drummers.
It's the cue hits on the cymbals, usually they just go for straight quarters. But I fw the cues so much more 😩

Duuuuuuude, that short burst from 3:30 to 3:32 was heaven
absolutely without a doubt one of the best fills/setups i’ve heard in metal
Nailed it!
You guys still making music these days?
Omg
Takeaway: this dude is just talented.
Yessir
Playing drums ain't talent🤣
@@Pro1938ftc3ch ok, you try and play this song half as well
@@RespectThePouch1028 Well to me it's a new song never heard of it but you do know that practicing ain't talent right 🤣
@@Pro1938ftc3ch oh that’s what you meant... I see
Well, to be honest, Jazz being his main thing, you can totally see it in the small details, the swings, the ghost notes, the groovy build-ups and break downs etc. I admire this dude for steppin' out of his comfort zone and trying extreme genres. He surely has loads of talent and creativity. Keep it up and you might make Jazz-Djent a real thing :D
It's not too far off from Matt Halpern's style of playing tbh
It comes through a lot in the fills

@@Beatstruck That was my thought exactly

I know we’re not about to sit here and ignore the fact that the groove and chops made this fucking sick. 10/10 got my vote to see more videos like this 🔥

I love your profile pic
Buenísimo el Malina!
Oh i'm with you
Okay I cannot for the LIFE of me find one single thing in this video you should be insecure about because this went SO DAMN HARD. Your jazz embellishments are RIGHT at home. Wonderful work.
100% agree with this!
3:30 that fill sick af thank u for that **mwah**
that cross-over fill at 4:30 was sick!
Scrolled down to make sure this comment was here. If it wasn't I was going to make it.
Your jazz background makes this 1,000,000 times better.
This is actually spectacular. I'd pay real American dollars to hear you play a whole djent album.
Real ones? Not monopoly ones? Daamn dude
This isn’t Djent wtf
Zack Grooves Dilla/Djazz EP when?
You're trolling us dude. Your metal drumming is pretty sick. When you say "struggling", you're still tearing it up!!! I like all music from classical to black metal, and you are definitely holding your own in unfamiliar genres. Keep it up brah!
Love this guy playing heavy music. The dynamics, and different tendendies are great! It's also awesome to hear real drums in a genre that typically sample replaces or programs everything!
1:19 - exact reason to do it again
@Berna are you crazy? I watch all of zack's videos
Heyy!
Haven't even seen a single person say this smh
@Berna Berna ? Asıl sen napıyon burda 😅
no joke, you actually become the drummer of this band. this fits so well. I think they only program everything at the moment and I cannot help and notice it every time. your stuff is muuuuuch better

try Dillinger Escape Plan, they sometimes did that, just sometimes, most of the time they are a little more heavy :D
sounded like Panic! At the Disco to me
That fill at 3:38 had me weak, you’re too talented!
Bro you play EXACTLY like Matt Halpern or Matt Garska, the overabundance of ghost notes, the elongated fills... You might have a carreer in metal
Remind me a lot of Morgan Berthet (kadinja) with those fast hands
@@darthvader11p b r u u u h you're right, can we please get our boy Zack to play some Kadinja next?!

damn, boy! might wanna get that snare exorcised.. shit's haunted by all them ghosties
As a metal/punk/country/jazz drummer I cannot get enough of this series. I couldn't go a minute without audibly laughing watching this, keep it up fr
Aww thank you brother!!
Laughing with or at him?
@@maxalaintwo3578 why would I laugh at this man he’s so much better at drums than both of us lmao
@@RyanOConnorDrums big facts lmao I could never
@@ZackGrooves I could be wrong but is sounds like you are behind the beat and metal drummers are exactly on the beat and you can't get rid of that little swing element in your playing. Anyway I have an idea. Do a Jazz , Djent funk hybrid. "A" section is B section is Jazz but not done in a gimmicky funny way, C is funky. Or it could be more integrated. The key is look on youtube "metal drums programming" and watch some videos about how to program metal drums. Then imitate the programmed drums. Playing like a machine here is a virtue, the opposite of jazz drums but a B section can go into a swing feel. Also you could add some electronic drums to you kit with Djent guitar chords sampled. A couple could be one chord but a third could have a sequence set up where it has four chords that trigger in sequence after each stick hit on this same pad.
Check these out on youtube they are pretty great:
Hell - Clown Core
'Giant Steps' Metal Jazz by Panzerballett.
DJENT JAZZ FUNK (channel = Mike Le Rossetti )
Panzerballett - "Take Five" Live at Theatron Munich 2013
Dude…I played metal for years. I wish I was a quarter as good as you are. Thanks for doing these! Don’t be discouraged or insecure- you’re so freaking good!
Djent breakdowns are amazing because if you play through a mistake like it didn’t happen nearly no one will even realise. You absolutely killed it! Keep up the good work! (plz do a jazz cover of a metal song, the memes, plz)
You really demonstrate the power of having jazz as a drum foundation and how it within metal can create something totally unique instead of just follow conventions
I desperately want the full version of that song with the straight-up jazz drumming
bump
Bro as a metal drummer I think literally everything you did was great. I can see the jazz techniques being used and the funny thing is a lot of djent band drummers use those techniques. Honestly reminds me of watching Matt Halpern play. I would say just keep at the style and you’ll get the nuances down. You obviously have the chops, it just takes some practice learning new styles on any instrument. 10/10 man.
Your playing never fails to bring a smile to my face. Amazing stuff my dude.
Made my night man. I hope that these videos are as fun for you as they seem and that they always are.
Much love from a stranger.
as someone who enjoys jazz and metal, these vids are some of the coolest most honest stuff out there. also, ur chops are nasty af nice job
Metal needs more jazz chops and this is the perfect example of why. Smashed it.
If you watch Garrett Miller's reviews, you'd notice there are actually a TON of jazz influences in metal drumming.
Yeah, only a couple bands like periphery or animals as leaders utilize a certain degree of chops
@@ElijahJohnsonDrums animals as leaders is sick
@@theelectricant98 yeah, they are one of my favorite bands!
Prog metal has some jazz stuff!
This is straight how Alex Camarena approaches the genre and I love it
Facts they’re both super groove based
I’d say Matt Halpern as well, that man doesn’t leave a cymbal not moving and a ghost note unplayed😂
This is totally refreshing to see/hear. So much about metal (my opinion) is about precision (trigger pads, drum replacement, etc). But this - it’s more organic. It’s not like you cooked this shit up in a lab and played it like a robot.
Ya killed it.
Been waiting on this one
My guuuuuuuuuy... You killed it. I'm a deathcore dude at heart and you got me super into jazz about a year and a half ago. This is very impressive, honestly, what made it so good was the fact that you were straight feeling that ish. Heart is everything when it comes to metal. Kudos handsome man, kudos indeed.
At this point, I'm pretty sure Nik wants to hire you as Termina's official drummer!
The sneaky little jazz bits somehow made it sound better
I love how even when you are out of your element it is still SOOO unbelievably clear that you are phenomenal drummer
the super jazz high tuning of your toms is killing me lmfao. Fits perfectly for this genre.
Using Stevie T as a reference is an instant like.
Ikr
Unequivocally yes
As a metal enthusiast, I'm really liking this series 👌 I would love my videos like these in the future
These videos are an absolute delight. A primarily jazz-oriented drummer who isn’t afraid to dip their toes into metal is a rare gift in this world. I hope to see more of this in the future. Keep kicking ass Zack!
dude u are nailing it. u're jazz character making it even better
As a metal drummer, I damn love your metal playing. So unique and actually adds so much to the music that wouldn’t necessarily be there if not in influenced by Jazz! Amazing! Keep it up man!
Fucking love the fills, such a cool mix. If you keep practicing with that double bass pedal you’d be a fucking assassin on the double bass you’re already a beast
the look he gives the cymbal at 3:31 about to make me act up
🔥🔥🔥🔥🤝
That fill at 3:30 put such a grin on my face. This is so sick!
This is my favourite of your vids so far ! KILLED IT !
My boy please make more constant vids, it can be literally anything, we just love seeing your face
This sounds like if Abe Cunningham would play in a metalcore band. Great drumming as always!
The jazz influences really help with those compound time fills.
Mate this is tight AF. The jazz background definitely rings through with a lot of the OG djenty type bands who infuse Jazz fusion elements into a metal setting, dudes like Thomas Haake(Meshuggah), Stef Broks(Textures), Jamie Postones(Tesseract), Matt Halpern(Periphery) and Matt Garstka(Animals as Leaders).
Dude you're amazing. Great cover! Your technique is (as always) awesome and I fucking love your other jazzy grooves as well. Keep it up! Always! Please keep giving us the privilege to hear you playing over and over again. Also, humor and music is a brutal combination. Congrats
4:21 man 👌👌👌👌👌👌 ... Un abrazo mi hermano y gracias por los videos, son muy inspiradores.
I can’t believe I haven’t seen someone comment on how he is subscribed to Lana Rhoades’ UA-cam channel at 0:25
Same
Def didn’t notice. 😂 What I want to know is... Does she have some sort of side hustle going on on UA-cam? Orrrrrr 🧐 🤔
@@DaMorg3 Not a side hustle I guess, she quit the industry a while ago and is now a sort of whistleblower for the exploitative nature behind getting started in the adult film industry and both her positive and negative experiences within it. I believe she continues to model tho.
There's prob enough Rhoades material to last a long time and then recirculate
Can you blame him?
Dude, I love your metal playing. Sounds fresh and exciting. mwah.
That chorus is so catchy though
I love how much you push and support other musicians. You are an amazing role model for people getting into playing music. Also, yea, I want to see more metal from you. 🤘 Djent is a groovy style of metal that focuses heavily on odd time signatures and syncopation. I think your jazz background makes you perfect for this style.
Love it. And seeing your channel grow makes me happy! Keep it up
i love the jazz tuned toms over the metal track
That C L A S S I C Stevie T video is pure gold. Timeless
Nik is secretly running you through band tryouts because he needs a real human to play his drum parts on tour.
Man, this is awesome work! Good to hear the nuances on the drums over djent for a change
Youre evolving and expanding and i cant wait to see where you go next hell fucking yeah
Bruh this needs to happen WAY more often
You should try learning an Animals as Leaders song like The Woven Web or something, I think their style would suit your metal playing well.
@Spenser Cook Those songs have some really hard double bass parts and coordination in there... Will take a long time to learn that!
The double bass in the woven web is minimal, there are some hertas in the breakdowns but it isn't too bad, the rest of the song is hell since Matt likes making songs outrageously hard.
Bruh, if you don’t do more like this, my soul would be crush.
bro i love so much how you threw those tasty fill in your grooving! it really gives me some sort of gospel-metal vibe!
You say this isn't your finest work, but influence and diffusion in music is one of the best things about it. I always love to hear something new and I love it even more when it works despite what one might think. Your jazzy nature adds a melodic feel to what can be seen as a ram straight through scene. Keep up the sick grooves, this was awesome
I had to stand up for that breakdown gawd DAYUM
Right?! I fell out of my bed, when that breakdown hit bro. Then the second wave hit and I almost got sucked into the 9th circle of Hell.
We definitely need to see Zack attempt a gojira song, I feel like their varying time signatures could be very challenging but interesting to see Zack doing it
Your Byzance crash sounds so good in this song. Much juicier than a china imo
Edit: that breakdown was really well played with the jazzy take on it. Subtle but definitely there
Love the stevie t but at the beginning
Zack you fuckin killed it! Really enjoyed seeing you have fun with it and loved your fills. Great job.
This feels like the perfect time to recommend Trioscapes for a phenomenal blend of the ideas/styles you’re talking about. Their drummer is the most fluid, technical, confident player I’ve ever seen and their blend of jazz/metal really nails the best elements of both. Grow up, and get on it!
Trioscapes is fucking awesome
Actually, anything Dan Briggs is involved with works out awesome
Those Jazz drums over the metal track were awesome, imo.
Your drum face at the beginning 😜
Dude you actually sounds really good. For real real. You nailed it.
I was here for the last metal video, and loved de jazz accents, im here on the new metal video, and love the jazz accents.
Metal drummers need to learn jazz now.
Boi Zack breaking boundaries here.
These videos actually made me watch the jazz ones and those inspired me to mess around with jazz stuff on my own songs.
So thanks man!
Very good, my man. Djent is a very robotic style of metal, with obnoxious time signatures. Your smooth hands on the fills gave it more life and human element, and you naturally have a gift with dynamics.
Playing jazz over metal is just Dillinger Escape Plan bro. Amazing playing 🤘
Also getting serious Sean Reinert vibes on some breaks... Althought Cynic is playing metal over jazz rather than the other way around
I 💕 dillinger
3:29-3:32 i got such a burst of energy when listening to this part
That was actually tight af
Love the little accents you put basically everywhere lmao sound so good
That snare is so crispy! But your metal chops are coming along nicely!
BRO THOSE GHOST NOTES IN METAL KILLS ME I'M LMAO
2:02 I lost it when he plays JAZZ on DJENT 🤣🤣🤣
Try doing either "flat earth" or "toilet" by clown core
Honestly man you nailed it. Like it doesn’t sound like a jazz drummer playing djent to me, it sounds like a drummer with a non generic sense of style is playing and I dig it. If I heard playing like this on an actual track I’d gravitate towards it.
Dude your a really cool person over all and your in my top 3 favorite drummer's . Keep it going !!!!
