100% Agree Ryan...Pete should thrive in the formidable METS batting order...With Vladdy Jr, it would become easy pickings for Pete...BUT, much is up to Pete to improve by stop pressing in his at-bats which was so obvious last season...The harder he tried, the less effective he was...He needs to revamp his approach...He took WAaay too many clear strikes and hittable pitches early in the count, and then helplessly waved at down-and-out sliders in the dirt late in the count...More discipline from Pete will yield a higher batting average AND more HRs, RBIs & higher OPS...He has great cover for his power bat in the METS batting order as it is now, never mind if Vladdy Jr is added to the mix which is distinctly possible before Opening Day
There is no way I would have Alonso batting 3rd. The lineup should be Lindor, Vientos, Soto, and then Alonso batting 4th. Vientos can hit 35 or more home runs with a better batting average than Alonso. Soto batting in front of Alonso would benefit Alonso and Viento's run production. Based on your analysis, Alonso would get the opportunity to get more RBIs with Soto batting in front of him. And the lineup, as I said, has the Met's best three hitters batting 1-2-3 in the order.
Agree 💯 % on the lineup you are proposing. After Pete I'd have Brandon Nimmo, then DH, my 2nd basement, then Alvarez and center fielder platoon, unless we sign Jurickson Profar in which case the back half of the lineup would adjust according to whose playing that day.
How would Soto in front of Alonso benefit Alonso? So teams can pitch around Soto all day and get Alonso out? Lol…we want Soto to be able to swing the bat and Alonso behind Soto takes the bat out of Soto’s hands. Not sure why so many people think Alonso belongs in the cleanup spot. Alonso is very similar to Schwarber. Not saying Alonso should be leading off but he should definitely not be hitting cleanup. Since Pete’s sorry ass needs protections, it should be Lindor, Alonso, Soto, Vientos. Teams won’t pitch around Lindor to get to Alonso. Soto behind Alonso will protect Alonso.
@@TheKilrmy Well, as Ryan said above, "either way, that would be one of the best top fours in all of baseball. It would do wonders for the lineup if Pete returned."
I also believe Pete will have a great bounce back year in 2025. He should take a short deal with high AAV and enjoy the ride. He's unlikely to be a lifetime Met.....but that's because it's hard to do for any first baseman. He will make all the money hes looking for if he continues to put the effort in and his family will enjoy a wonderful life.
He was asked about his poor performance in 2024 I think it was in August and he said he was an "all star" and would hit 40 bombs. that really changed how I felt about him only reason he was an all star was because of that stupid hr derby. and he FAILED to hit 40. if he signs a contract there should be a NO HR DERBY clause. it messes up his swing
Ryan, if they sign Pete to a long term team friendly contract, then Vlad wants to play where his younger brother was drafted, do you think there’s a world where Pete plays at DH? Or is that too much money to allocate to the DH even if Pete was willing?
I get what you are saying, and it is logical. But there is a consideration that needs to be added in. Players factor in “security” when they seek a contract, especially when they only hit FA at age 30. It is easy to say the player “should bet on himself” or note that he can make up salary down the road after taking a shorter term contract. And it makes sense - so long as they remain healthy. And that’s a big caveat. Consider David Wright. Wright signed an 8 year deal before the 2013 season. Then he barely played after 2014 because of his spine issue. If he’d have signed a short-term contract instead of that 8 year deal, it would have cost him more than $100 million. Players think about these things even if fans don’t.
Wright had no idea that his back would go on him so he got " lucky ". I get all the business of so called "security " but......$25 mil a year is nothing to sneeze at...
@ Nobody ever knows that a catastrophic injury will occur. But sometimes it happens. And that’s part of the reason athletes seek security. $25 million is “nothing to sneeze at.” So what? Every player wants to maximize his value. Saying $25 million is “nothing to sneeze at” from a player perspective is no different from saying $150 million is a “drop in the bucket” for an owner worth $25 billion. There is nothing wrong with Pete, someone who was blocked from the market until this year, trying to maximize his value and seek security. I’m really baffled by the fans who have turned on Pete over this contract standoff.
@dashx1103 what you also are leaving out is the market determines the value of the contract. Pete has no market currently. When there us no market then the contract won't be there. Regardless of what an owner is worth contracts have zero to do with it. The team needs to make money. 25 million is more than enough playing a game. You and I will never come close. Players today are overpaid cry babies. Imagine playing 25 years ago these guys would really be crying
@@gold_ram_5.780 "The market." I'm not missing the point about "the market." You are, frankly. Part of what I'm saying here is that players like Pete are NOT PAID MARKET VALUE unless, and until, they serve 6 years and remain healthy. Nobody cares about "the market" during the prime of Pete's career. I'd have a different view here if Pete had been allowed to seek "market value" at any time previously. He simply wasn't allowed it. It is sad/funny to me that fans love to throw out the "market value" argument when a player finally hits free agency, but couldn't care less about market value before that. Pete is an instructive example. Pete, in his first year, broke the MLB HR record for a rookie. In his next season, was he able to seek a "market value" contract based on having established himself as the top HR hitter in the NL? No. He wasn't. Pete made well less than $1 million dollars in the season after hitting 53 HRs as a rookie. Since then, he's had no opportunity to test the "free market" until right now. He's been blocked. So, let's either do "market value" or don't do "market value." But let's not constantly spin it in favor of the billionaires who own everything. And I personally hate how fans deride players for being "cry babies" over money. We go to the ballpark to see the players play, not to watch the owners sit in a luxury booth. But when there is a contract dispute, fans are conditioned to side with ownership. It's "so much money" that the player should just take it. Right? That's the line. Nobody ever says it is "so little money" to the owner that he should just pay it. Let's be honest ... if Cohen paid Pete the $125 mil or whatever it is a complete drop in the bucket to him as a dude with $25 billion. It would be less of a percentage of his net worth than what I gave the Salvation Army bell ringer at the grocery store on Christmas Eve. But, it is always about the "greed" of the players. It just leaves me shaking my head. I say pay Pete. Bring him back. Let him be a Met for life. And if it costs the multi-billionaire a few extra bucks, so be it.
Alonso made $14.5 million in 2023 and $20.5 million in 2024. He didn’t play like a $15-20 million player but he got paid. So, now, he can get paid what he is worth going forward, not what he previously did is worth.
Dont allow Boris tu bully the Mets. Nobody is willing tu pay Alonzo that type of money. I would let him go. Boris believes he own the MLB. Boris ego is involved and Alonzo is on a decline and Boris dont want on his record that he lost his player alot of money.
Pete has proven that he is not a guy that performs well under pressure. Not saying he never does, but let's be honest. I don't think Pete wants to bet on himself like last year.
Pete either doesn't want to come back, or is only interested in the highest bid. Manaea is a Boras client, wanted to come back, and already signed with the Mets. The extension offer a few years back, and the short term high AAV are fair to both sides. He has the Soto $ rolling around in his head and Pete is way ahead of the market in his contract expectation (after 2 years of decline while in his prime). Time to switch gears and move on. I love Pete but he is making a big mistake for himself and if he is not careful, will wind up hitting 25 HR/year in cavernous SF for no $. It is telling thst there are no rumors out there of any real contract offers because they likely are all on the low side. Someone in his inner circle needs to make an intervention or he will be into spring training unsigned and with the Mets having moved on.

I want to see Pete and the Mets come together on a 6 year deal possible 7th year option etc but a short term deal could be best for both sides and the future especially if Vladdy is a target for next year. 3 year 90 million deal for Alonso with an opt out after first season. Break down would be 35m, 30m and 25m
Used to love Pete. No more. BTW a lot harder to hit hrs at Citi than at Yankee. Still sick of Pete's attitude. Good riddance. Hopefully get Vlad.next year. Hopefully Vientos or someone else moves to first and plays well. I have such a strong feeling Mauricio starts and lights it up. Heck maybe even Baty may shock us and finally hit pro pitching.
Let’s how this all plays out first. We could be completely wrong about Pete. It’s not fair to accuse him of things and jump the gun prematurely. Most of what we hear in the news is false. I’m going to wait it out til the end and see his final decision before I write him off completely.
Why not offer Pete a form of the Juan Soto Op-in? On top of the 3 year $90 million, include a 3 year $60 million op-in the Mets can choose to keep him from testing the market. In essence, they can buyout his op-outs at any time, which gives him a 6 year $150 million deal in the end. It saves Pete the anxiety of testing the market again.
Excellent analysis Ryan thank you ! Let’s get Pete done now !!
