Jared I really enjoyed your videos, funny thing happened to us, hubby hooked up the water to the black tank sprinkler instead of the city water. 😢 I was in the bathroom setting up and heard the burping sound, I stepped on the flush pedal and 💥 boom the pressure exploded and yucky water went flying. Got all that cleaned up and replaced the seal and no harm no foul.😅
If I ever do see you on the road, I’m gonna have to spend hours checking out your electrical bay. Every time you show that thing it’s just a work of art.
I have been trying to figure out the "sewer smell" on my month old camper since I got it!!! Now I know and case is closed. Thanks Jared!!! I truly have learned so much from you.
Great video. Something to add about side lights. The side lights forward of the axle have to be amber. The side lights rear of the axle have to be red. I learned this when replacing the side lights on my boat.
Tip: If you wear a metal wedding band remove it prior to working on the batteries. Feb 2021 I was working on my bass boat trolling motor batteries while wearing a tungsten wedding band. That band came between the wrench and a positive terminal as I was loosening a negative terminal. One spark turned that ring instantly bright red hot and caused 3rd degree burns to my finger. 20 years of working on boats and a little complacency makes me rethink everything. Burns absolutely suck, by the way. :) Another thing. If you have your bathroom vent fan on while you flush the negative air pressure inside the RV from the fan can actually suck in sewer gases through the toilet as you flush. I always turn off the fan prior to flushing to avoid this.
Thank you for sharing these things... I figured out the toilet burping, didnt know why but knew I needed to empty the tank... I didn't know why I was getting the smell into the RV so now I know to keep that fan going if it is open so the smell doesn't come in.
Hi Jared great tips I’m a commercial driver the markers lights also have to be reflective so they can be seen at night without the lights on if they are not you have to have a reflective decal beside the light thanks 😊
If you're waiting until your toilet burps to empty your black tank, you're overfilling it. Also, you should always drain your tank before using the black tank flush. I'm sure your owners manual clearly says to never use the black tank flush without the valve open. Great video, though. I love how you give clear and concise info that is mostly geared towards people new to RVing, but also can be incredibly useful to people that have been doing it for years.
Thanks for your short, helpful, straightforward videos! I've owned an RV for 6 months and learned a lot from UA-cam. But your videos are among the BEST.
Wise words from the GURU of RV’s!! Thank you for the edu on how stuff works in the RV. We’re on the road and I’m loving learning on the go. Learned by near miss about battery terminals. Am happy to know about causes of sewer gas in the RV 2nd hand!! Thanks again!!
Hey Jered, as always superior content. The lights of three can actually be used to estimate distance when following. If you see one your distance is far compared to seeing three at much closer. Keep up the good work!
I have a couple of wrenches that have burn marks on them from where they have contacted the wrong battery post. The arc was VERY scary, and that was with a single 12-volt battery in a car. Can you imagine how big the spark will be when you have a series of batteries? Also, I drove a tractor/trailer for five years and no one ever told me about the significance of the lights on the back of the trailer. Now I know.
Metal rings and batteries don’t mix. You learn this in automotive school for just the reason you mentioned. Some of us were around for positive ground (earth) cars so the the process was reversed. While people may think this is basic info it’s good review. Thank you sir!
Spot on about the batteries. I've seen mangled fingers from wedding bands arcing and witnessed a battery exploding in a friends face because of an errant spark.
If you bath room max air is running and you flush your toilet, your going to suck the air out of your black tank and into your camper. You are in a rough spot, cause for just while you flush you need your fan off then immediately turn it on to prevent the wind from blowing it in your fan from outside. Something engineers at the Manufacturers should look into when designing a floor plan. Great video and tips!
Ha! I had a sewer smell in the bathroom when I was at the dump station. I couldn't figure it out. A real head scratcher for me. Now I think I know how that happened. With the LiFePO4 batteries, the number of amps that can flow is way, way higher than a lead acid battery. I usually wear some type of glove, even just nitrile gloves, when working on the electrical system in my RV.
Great video. Never knew about the lights on the rear and sides. I was just about to replace one with a rear view camera. Have one comment on running the fan all the time in the bathroom. If all the doors and windows are closed, running the fan can create a negative air pressure in your trailer so when you actually flush your toilet air can be sucked down through your black tank vent, through your black tank, and then up into your trailer resulting in a very unpleasant smell. Always make sure you have other vents or windows open.
I'm designing and building a trailer right now. I arbitrarily decided not to mess with those lights when installing a camera, not knowing it mattered. I will definitely be conscious of where I put the black tank vent. Thanks for the info!
Add to it to check the plumbing vent cap on top as well. They become brittle after a few years and not only can they crack or chip, but they can invite the animals or insects you mention to make a home there. The vent caps are usually 2 pieces, and I was able to just replace the top piece as the lower piece covered at the base with self-leveling sealant is often still good. I carry an extra one in case hail cracks them as what happened to me.
@@marcrejas1634 There are many models sold on Amazon, take a photo and match them up. Most have a tiny hole on top where a screw secures it to the other half below. One of mine was misaligned and the screw missed the socket below, but by fate latched onto the outside of the edge of the socket below. If you get the same brand you might only need to replace the top, but if you have a shade tree and a tube of self-leveling lap sealant you can have the whole thing replaced in 30-45 minutes working slow with the putty knife, being sure not to tear the TPO or rubber, etc.
Another great video. Have to really pay attention when working around batteries. I had a auto shop teacher in high school who was wearing a Twista flex watch band. He touched the watchband on the positive terminal of the battery it arctic across the battery and grounded out on the chassis of a car. Three of the links of his watch band welded together and gave him a pretty nasty scar on his wrist.
THX for the electrical safety suggestion for the nylon ring. Another reason to use nylon rings is that metal rings can catch on something rigid (like when climbing or descending a ladder) and a finger can literally be ripped off a hand. Safe travels.
Yes good reminder. I switched to them when I was doing construction. My old metal ring was oblong when I tried to take it off one day. I saw that and thought that is a recipe for disaster.
Great video! For a future video, would you consider explanations on vents found inside the cabinetry (i.e. bathroom, kitchen sink cabinet)? This seems to be a growing trend among manufacturers, and in some of the social media boards, more questions are being asked about them....
To limit the holes in the roof for plumbing vents some manufacturers are putting burb vents in the plumbing under the sink. It serves the same purpose to allow air to equalize the pressure in the pipe, allowing water to flow into the tank.
Love your videos. Question tho, when your on a 30amp hookup what do you do as a 50amp camper to not overload the 30amp? What do you do not to overhear your surge protector, trip the pedestal, yet still enjoy all of your campers options?
That is just our front bedroom fan. If you have a window open and the fan on when flushing it won’t bring the smell in. Without the window open it pulls the air through the plumbing vent and up through the toilet.
Maybe for next video content:: Please explain how to keep smoke from fires out of your RV, I had a neighbor who burned some brush, lucky for me my AC was off and the smoke did not get inside,. But would like to know more on how to prevent smoke from coming in RV thru roof vents.. Thanks and Happy Trails !!
Yes that can be a tough one. Good thing is you can still run your ac and not bring in smoke. The AC doesn’t pull out side air in, it cycles the inside air.
Hey Jered, I recently installed a tankless water heater. But noticed that it takes awhile for hot water to come out at the bathroom sink and shower. Do you recommend a certain recirculating pump to install on a tankless water heater in an RV. The reason for being is don’t want to fill my gray tanks to fast.

You can wrap the wrench/ratchet with masking tape to help cut down the accidental welding when dealing the positive post.
