"You are gods..." What Did Jesus Mean?

  • In my opinion, one of the most misunderstood passages in the gospels is in John 10:33-36 when Jesus is talking to the Pharisees. It says, “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came-and Scripture cannot be set aside- what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?"
What did Jesus mean when he said the phrase, "you are gods"? Many people claim this is a verse saying that humans were meant to be gods, but this is against everything Jesus and Scripture stood for. Pastor Mike helps bring clarity.
We both understand there are different understandings of this passage. I'd recommend checking out Dr. Michael Heiser's research about this as well.
There are a lot of scriptures that are used to support WoF (Word of Faith) new age/new thought teachings. This is just one and the ones that I see mostly misused in churches and from new age/new thought teachers.

We both understand there can be different understandings of this passage. However, compared to Psalm 82 it becomes clearer.
Bottom line... its definitely *not* saying humans are gods. This contradicts the entirety of scripture, not to mention undermines the identity of God Himself.
I'd recommend checking out Dr. Michael Heiser's research about this as well for another perspective. Thanks for watching everyone! 🤓

@@imWillJ Brother, I think you have to Re-watch the video. Jesus spoke in many parables and metaphors, and also in the old testament. Everything I could explain is basically what brother Mike here said. So I just want to tell you that when you read God's word, you can't just read it to read it. You have to pray about what you are reading and ask for revelation from the Spirit to show you what His word means. Calling ourselves gods first of all is very self-exalting and taking from God's glory which He does not a share. Most Christians in this country believe they are entitled to everything they want. But what about the poor Christians in 3rd world countries? If they are gods then why don't they just speak clean water into existence? Or a warm meal into existence? Or shoes, clothing, etc. We sometimes think that we should get everything we want because we are used to having all these blessings already that we don't realize we have. God bless.

Psalm 82 is a great example of God rebuking celestial rulers over the earth, assigned some time after Babel (Genesis 10-11, Deuteronomy 32), who did not rule according to His purposes but according to their own. They became corrupt and accepted human worship apart from God and practically erased the memory of the true God from the nations, until Jesus showed up. In ancient times, kings, emperors and holy men in high positions of power (ie high priests/priestesses) were revered as gods amongst their people, or incarnations of gods. This was common practice dating back to Mesopotamia unless I’m very much mistaken. The Roman Empire and Egyptians did this too I believe?
Whenever I see that passage I always assume that’s the kind of thing Jesus is referring to, gods as in a position of high power and authority politically speaking.
Still, Mike’s explanation also hits the nail on the head. Satan said man can be gods, and look how well that turned out in Genesis.

Correct! This is how sons of God are supposed to represent Him on this earth. The benefit is not only for us, but for the World. Adam was originally intended to be a representative of God on the earth, but the Fall into sin ruined this. God had a plan before creation to put it all back right, the way it was originally supposed to be. If we understood this better, I think it would be a powerful weapon against falling into sin. Because we are coming back with Christ to rule and reign during the millennium. So we should be practicing now while we're here.

Verse 9 and 10 then go into a commentary of Genesis 12 and the beginning of God's chosen people through Abram. What's confusing and problematic and cause for debate is why separate people according to the number of the sons of Israel if at the tower of babel Israel does not exist? The idea is that God's portion started through Abram, but God didn't forget about all the other nations. He, The Most High God, appointed spiritual beings (type of guardian angels if you will) that were supposed to watch over and guide the nations. Psalm 82 is judgment against these sons of God for dealing treacherously with the nations. Psalm 89:5-8 continues this idea. Throughput second temple biblical writings 'sons of God' language is used for this 'Divine Council' idea. The Ugaritic texts found in 1922 show that the Divine council was a common concept among the Ancient East. Dead sea scrolls found in 1947 dating back to the 2nd century bc, have 'sons of God' wording which all gives credence to Divine council concepts throughout the Old Testament

The hebrew word elohim is used often as a name of God but it is about a plurality of power. This is part of the reason why the word is used to refer to the council of judges which are set up as a part of the government of Israel according to the Torah. Understanding that this word is specifically about an attribute and not just a name helps bring better context to this issue. The Complete Jewish Bible translation does a good job of noting this so that those who read English can understand it better.

Why is Elohim translated God and not judges, if elohim can be either God or judges? Do elohim and shofet both mean judges? Doesn't use of the word elohim suggest the nature of those that are being judged in the divine assembly for judging incorrectly? Or is it God that established them as elohim as an extension of His rule? Or are they setting themselves up as elohim in their own eyes because they are judges?

Jerry Savelle: I have known Jerry Savelle before his affair and divorce from his first wife. (A long time ago). He is an apprentice of Kenneth Copeland. He aligns himself with Copeland's teachings.
One day I stood before Jerry Savelle for prayer for herniated discs in my neck. What did he do? He put his hands on my head, popped my neck and shoved/forced me down. If God had slain me, I would have been helpless to stay on my feet. But since God did not slay me and make me fall I wouldn't go down until Savelle pushed me down causing great pain. So much pain, i could hardly get up by myself. I was so angry! What a phony...

Even if people just read the rest of the passage in John it’s obvious that merely calling Himself the Son of God is enough blasphemy to get Jesus killed. Clearly psalm 82 cannot refer to humans as “gods” the way that the new age defines it because if scripture supported that notion nobody would have batted an eyelid at Jesus.

I was blessed to have read and understood it as: hey, those people in high authority -given by God - have the power to decide who lives and who dies in a court of law. Usually and ultimately, only God decides at that level, but since He bestowed that level of authority to some few men, only they could be considered as people under and Wiith God's level of operation in that aspect -but dying as regular folks in the end.

Thank you so much for teaching and keeping the teaching Biblical and focused on glorifying Christ. I would love for you to do video using your platform to show how to discern whether a “Christian” author is legitimate or not. I listened to Lysa Terkeurst speak on several platforms. She seems like a very godly woman. I kept hearing her say forgive, and God, but it seems like her use of pronouns were heavy with I, and me. Her help came almost exclusively from her counselor and her ability to forgive the other person. In one video she mentioned her counselor instructed her to write a list of all her pain and all the offenses against her, and to forgive. I think red felt and 3x5 cards were involved in this exercise. I kept waiting to hear Bible verses for which to use in conjunction with depending on God, and to admit, our own unworthiness, but because of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, I can humbly come before God and place my faith in Christ alone for salvation, and Kay this burden, then, before God. I don’t hear this from her. I am sure she is a very nice lady, but her focus seems to be on she herself doing the heavy lifting, in which she gets lots of praise and sympathy. I have to ask, Is Jesus being glorified in her testimony? Please consider, when you have time, to do a review and show us more ways to spot truth or deception in the “testimonies” of famous “Christians.” Thank you so much.

As far as Psalm 82, have you guys looked into Michael Heiser's take on it? In a book he authored, The Unseen Realm, the assembly referenced in the verse 1 is said to refer to supernatural rulers of regions as opposed to human judges. Another interpretation points to the Canaanite high god, El and his divine assembly being the point of reference here.

I believe there are two points that could be helpful to consider. Firstly, debate in the comments concerning the most accurate understanding of the meaning of elohim in Ps 82, whilst interesting, misses the point that it doesn't matter so much what we now understand it to most correctly mean, what matters is the meaning that the quotation would have had to Jesus' opponents at the time. That's what Jesus is targeting. And if we propose that those in John 10 saw elohim in Ps 82:6 as deities, rather than "judges" or "mighty ones", then the power of Jesus' challenge is lost. He would either be saying to them "Look, God is saying gods are gods!", to which they would reasonably respond "So what?", or worse, it could make Jesus appear to be saying he is merely claiming to be one of the inferior divine beings. Neither of these is a good position to believe Jesus was putting himself in.
Jewish commentators of the time commonly held that the Psalm referred either to the errant judges of Israel (called elohiym in Exodus) or Israel itself receiving the Word of God at Sinai and failing to be the "mighty ones" that Word commissioned them to be. Holding either of those views would provide the target for Jesus to challenge their acceptance of judges or the nation of Israel being named elohim but rejecting as blasphemous the claims he had been making of equality with God (I and my Father are one...).
Secondly, the argument in John 10 is represented to us in Greek, not in Hebrew, meaning the gospel of John has Jesus issuing his challenge about theos, rather than elohim. To quote from Psalms in Greek, Jesus would surely have referred to the Septuagint, which first century Jewish teachers regarded as a divinely inspired translation. And indeed, θεοί is what the Septuagint uses to translate the line "I said you are gods". I suspect when Jesus said "Is it not written in YOUR law" he then quoted the Septuagint to them, meaning "In YOUR official translation, the ones YOU accept as being the judges of Israel are called θεοί (deity)." Additional clarification: In using this refutation, Jesus would not be pronouncing judges as divine, but driving home to his detractors how completely unsound their position was.

I know Dr. Michael Heiser is the best source. I think TheBibleProject touches on the use of 'elohim' very well in their Divine Council series.

  • @wolves201
    @wolves201 2 роки тому +16

Dr Michael Heiser takes a different view. He believes that Ps 82 relates to the celestial beings and the order there-in.
Verse 1 God (Elohiym) stands in the midst of the gods (Elohiym). It is therefore a council of the ruling gods of the nations, a divine council in the heavenly realms. We see this alluded to in the beginning of Job.
The word elohiym is used a thousand or more times for God, gods, angels etc but whenever a reference is to God (Yahweh) it is made clear. For example, Ps 82:6 'I said you are gods (Elohiym) and all of you are children of the Most High (Elyon)'. Or Ps 97:9 'For you O Yahweh.....are highly exalted above all gods (Elohiym). And Deut 3:24 'What god (el) is there in heaven...who can do according to your works and...mighty deeds'.
Also, according to Dr Heiser, the notion that Ps 82 is referring to a fleshly council is flawed. Nowhere in the bible does God make the Jewish leaders rulers over the nations. In fact, he tells them to be separate from all the other nations.
So, this verse does just what it says on the tin: it is about the ruling council in the heavenly realms where God Almighty is admonishing (we assume) some of the rulers. This concept would have been understood by the ancient Hebrews.

As long as we bow down to the one true God and do His will, we are "reflections" of the one true God. When we don't submit to the one true God's will, and we do our own will, then we are false gods, who Jesus will not recognize. Other false gods (demons) will be our tormentors...
