So we have an "already" judgment, and that works its way out in the Gospel. And we have "not yet" judgment, that's the eschatology. Israel is the "gods" in Psalm 82, the "gods" are human NOT nonhuman like this Heiser guy promoted.
Israel was unique from the pagan nations that surrounded them, Israel had the law of God, 10 commandment, prophets and a Levitical priesthood. Since Israel had the law of God, it put Israel in the position of being "gods," becuase God chose them, Israel was God's chosen people.
Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you;

Have you ever considered that you're the center of the Universe?
This is something pretty obvious from a subjective point of view. It has nothing to do with narcissism. Jesus has a 'Father Jesus' and a 'Son Jesus'. He is both, but mostly the Son. DRMSH has a 'Father DRMSH' and a 'Son DRMSH'. You are a 'son' of God (the Father), your 'Father'. You're not the Son of Jesus' Father. In someone else's mind 'you' are just an image, call it false god, call it an idol, whatever you like.
Of course when Jesus starts slaughtering and killing and destroying, he'll kill all gods/angels/demons and so on... but when is he going to destroy 'you'? Never. If he ever existed, you were never part of his psyche. This is just pure Rinzai. Would he slaughter his own students, sure, but only in his mind. It's like weeding a garden. To reach the father. Kill the mind.
He would never be able to destroy 'you', if you were both alive at the same time. Sure, in the realm of the creator, call it Yaldaboath, demiurge, 'God' or whatever, he would be able to put a knife in your heart and you will die. But never could he prevent you from reaching your soul, if you would want to do that. Only 'your' Yaldaboath wants to do that. You kill the mind, he brings it back.
If you use a map of the stars to find a village in Spain, that would be ridiculous. Same thing... don't misuse the map that points to the inner realm to find 'Gods' in the universe 'outside'.
This knowledge has been misunderstood by people because they do not rigorously follow a method. They are unaware. Too busy and shattered in the outside world.

Dr. Heiser, I always knew there was more to the bible than what I was being taught. I knew this was a book not only about being Holy men and being good. This is a book about a Holy God and His government, administration and purposes. It is so much more than a Sunday school reference tome. It is a book of hope. It is the words of God to mortal men regarding the universe and its complete redemption. Thank you for your study, hardwork, insight and teaching.

I was a hindu and now a Christian but learnt so much more from Dr heiser forum about the bible
Amen. Even as a child, I could feel there was more to the scripture than I could see or was being taught. The knowledge I have now has changed the way I view everything. Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father and not just in the new testament.
Because of Dr heisers work, I have been able to cohesively represent Gods narrative to many skeptics in ways that furnished understanding for the first time, God bless him and his family!!

I've been following Dr Michael Heiser since his "ancient aliens theory" slaying days. He just keeps on getting better and better. Totally agree with you that William Lane Craig is outstanding, as is Professor John Lennox and of course C.S. Lewis' (RIP) work is also a great benefit.
I'm not a Catholic, however I love my Catholic brothers and sisters. Catholics also have some remarkable theologians and apologists. From the not so distant past, G.K. Chesterton, Bishop Fulton Sheen (may they Rest in Peace) were and still are giants.
There are also several contemporary Catholic doctors/priests and Bishops who have been doing remarkable work lately. It's almost as if parts of the Catholic Church have awoken from from a deep slumber. I like a lot of Dr Brandt Pitre's work, but there are also other Catholic doctors/priests and apologists that I hold in respect, such as Fr. Chris Alar. I may not agree with all of their theology and doctrine, but that doesn't make them irrelevant. I find myself agreeing with them more often than not.
Still, Dr Heiser goes where few dare to tread. Bless you to brother in Christ. HalleluYah!

And do you even know why Jeremiah was torn apart like a dog between the altar and the temple, where blood must be shed for any man to enter before the holy of holies?
It is because Jeremiah dared to say that the temple mount would be given to Allah, as it is this day.

I came here because I got stuck on John 10 while reading. I am so glad I watched this. I read several commentaries, and they weren’t cutting it.

Amen! Your rigorous scholarship here is of great help to all of us, Dr. Heiser. I will be sharing this to my fellow church members of whom I am sure would find this not only interesting, but even beneficial for their spiritual lives.
There is only one Lord worthy of our worship and who is sovereign over all things. The triune God for whom all things exists rule over all the powers in creation and that is more than enough to ground my security for eternity in the finished work of Christ Jesus.
Please keep on doing this, Dr. Heiser! We are being edified in our study of the Word of God as we also use your teachings as resources.

Lets go word by word here:

"knowing not to discern they walk in darkness, all the foundation of the Earth will shake." - Psalms 82:5
"amarti (I utter) elohim (gods) kullechem (all of you are) uvenei (sons of) alah (The most High)." - Psalms 82:6
"I utter Elohim, "all of you are sons of Allah."" - Psalms 82:6
So we can know Jesus is speaking here in the Psalms.
Jesus says in John 10:34 that the book of the law reveals, "I said, Ye are gods?"
Jesus is declaring he was Elohim speaking in Psalms 82:6.
Do you deny this? Jesus is Elohim.
Jesus is calling them the sons of the devil or Allah.
"achen (surely) temutun (you will die)" - Psalms 82:7a
Yahweh promised that in the Garden of Eden.
"achen (surely) temutun (you will die) ke'adam (like man) tippolu (fall) uche'achad (the one, the head) hassarim (prince)." - Psalms 82:7
"Surely you will die, like man fall the one, the head prince." - Psalms 82:7
This is end time prophecy. The Muslims know they must walk in darkness. They are denied even opening the book of the law to read it in Islam.
Satan is the head prince, the coming one to fall, but Jesus is declaring from the Garden of Eden they who sin are following their father and are like unto the coming one whose lawlessness will be revealed. He is declaring he was that Elohim who declared the fate of all ke'adam (like Adam).
@Mrs Edna Welthorpe, wrong. Allah means "the accursed" in Hebrew, so I doubt a man who is God would be confused by the message of His own book. You might say "Allah" to speak of God because you come 3,600 years later and are confused, but Jesus would only have spoken of Allah as a damned thing, for no other term in the ancient Hebrew is more damned than Allah.

Thus, the reading with English for all words, but the key ones, is the following.

What's interesting was that early Christian apologists used to argue the defeat of the gods (whom they saw as demons) based on the historical record. Plutarch I believe writes that, during the reign of Tiberius, news was heard that "The great god Pan is dead".

Dr. Heiser, I wish you would publish a study Bible. It would be awesome. You are a great scholar, teaching “the rest of us” in a way we can understand.
I stumbled upon some of these ideas early in my walk. CS Lewis - not with nearly as much depth, but clearly understood there was room in the Biblical narrative for other powerful spiritual entities. That disturbed me about CS Lewis for a long time, but now I simply understand he read the Bible well.

Great explanation for Jesus's discussion late in John 10.
I know some who believe that this means "we are gods."
I believe we are his children as the scriptures tell us. Eternity is a long time, don't you think we will progress? I can't imagine sitting around singing and nothing else. As a parent, I want the best for my own children as they choose who they will become. I can imagine a loving God who feels the same about his own. I pray we all remember the great sacrifice Christ paid upon the cross in our behalf as we celebrate Easter Sunday by worshiping Him as our Lord and Savior, the great Redeemer of the world.

Jesus at John 10:34-35 makes it very clear that He is talking about Israel as a whole as the ones who received the Word of God (sarcasm and figurative speak, hyperbole, and so on). So, any strange interpretation about other gods in the spiritual realm is completely out of context and just demonstrates how someone can become so fixated on a subject outside of what we are commanded to do that their vision is obstructed.
