The Ancient OrthoDox Fathers were crystal clear how to tell a Christian from a nominal "Christian". OrthoDoxy/CathOlIcity/Christianity is a spiritual status of someone who adheres to and infallibly applies Total Divine ReVelation. We're not at liberty to pick and choose.

My biggest pet peeve when I hear that… when every scholar understands and knows that the Bibles of today match the ancient manuscripts of the first century. Not to mention that the Old Testament that we use and the Torah that Israel uses matches nearly word for word with extremely slight variants that are so minute that they are only noticed by a high level expert.

We live in a strange period at the end of time where when someone says they are a Christian you have no idea what they believe.

    • @Ignasimp
      @Ignasimp 3 роки тому +31

It's a two edge sword in my opinion. It's good that we don't blindly follow everything we are told at face value. A good Christian should be always learning and often we'll have to rethink all our believes because they don't make sense to us anymore, and to get to a deeper understanding there will me moments of doubt, moments we lose faith...
And there is still room for disagreement even in the Church. Both Orthodox and Roman catholics don't agree in everything, yet we wouldn't consider one group the real chrisitian while the other being fake when most of our doctrine, belives and trsdiction, art, iconography is the same.
Well, there is people who say those things, but that's their problem.

I know it's something you said in passing, but I wish people wouldn't casually throw around the idea that we live at the end of time. There's no support for it, Biblical or otherwise, and it leads to some foolish and irresponsible behavior toward the world.

    • @deadvikingtrolls

@@michigandersea3485 There's been plenty of support for this being nearly the pinnacle of human depravity. Between that and different endtime events explicitly noted in the Bible I'd say this is probably about it. We don't have to agree, we just both have to be able to state our opinions freely and continue living our lives as grounded Christians.

I had a coworker who claimed to be Christian. So Christian in fact that she uses tarot cards, dowsing rods, practices pyromancy, communes with spirits, thinks is funny or cute that her friend is getting visits from a demon calling itself Azazel, laughing off my concern at said visits saying she taught her friend all the most powerful runes and wards to protect her from evil spirits, denies everything about the Bible and Jesus, and refuses to answer the question "What defines a Christian in your mind?"

I wasn't JW but I used to be a heavy conspiracy theorist and this is what I was told. Although I am a full believer in Jesus ONLY now, I still can't help but think it's true about the smurfs. That way the JW's are kept constantly insecure and are therefore dependant on the organization's ok on every little thing.

Jesus died....Jesus didn't actually die....Jesus was celibate and sex is a sin....Jesus was married and sex is a celebration if life..... Jesus was condemned to death but a look-alike was crucified instead of him....Jesus was a spirit who never had a physical body to start with... and on and on. The idea of the virgin birth was tacked on to the story decades after the crucifixion. Jesus was trying to upgrade Jewish teachings to prepare the Jews for the end of the world, but Saul if Tarsus ( who never actually met Jesus) took over the Jesus movement and added in teachings Jesus and His Apostles did not teach, and expanded the teachings from Jews only to the Gentiles so that the Roman Empire could use the religion to control the masses. Pagan...
Meaning the religion or custom of that place.

I'm guessing a lot of people who grew up going to church can relate with that. It wasn't until going through catechism in an ELCA church and our pastor teaching us about Luther that drove me to dive into scripture for myself.
After reading start to finish, the church I attended got a new pastor who just told personal stories. I got my driver's license and started attending a church about 45 minutes away on my own (sometimes I could get friends or my brother to come with), because they were teaching from the text.

*Has flashbacks to when I was once a Jehovah's Witness* 😵‍💫
I'm really glad Jesus got me out of that... still working on correcting my beliefs. There are so many wrong thinkings and social pressures in this world that it makes it really difficult to get my mind straight on things and just listen to God instead of the influence of wrong ideas and internal desires. But I know Jesus is enough to be saved, he really is and that is what is important, no matter how much we fail. His grace is so amazing bruh 😭😭😭

Almost spit out my coffee when she said "SMURFS." Ha! Here's one for you, an exchange I had on FB with a neighbor: I teach a faith-based dance fitness class at a local church. We don't charge, we take donations and view it as a ministry to the ladies in our local area. A neighbor of mine teaches yoga and offered to come to our class and lead a yoga practice. I kindly told her that adding another fitness format would be against our culture (culture of the company whose format we teach) and wouldn't fit with our group because we are Christians. She told me, "Oh, I don't know if you know, but I'm Presbyterian, but I haven't been in the church for a while. But in my classes, I try to be more agnostic because I have many Hindu and Buddhist friends who attend. So I try to be more agnostic." I couldn't believe it-- no true Christian walking with the Lord would say "I try to be more agnostic."

You need to tell her that her understanding is way off and start telling her the facts bit by bit. At least that's what I did when I was in her place a year ago.

Hang in there, control yourself.. I went down that path too. And its draining, for there is no true life in it. Sooner or later she will get exhausted and will turn to Christ and God. Living without God is a destructive path that ends in death in the end... Spirituality just keeps your head above the water but the Bible is the real nourishment for the soul. Reading Isaiah opened my eyes.

There are very few, infrequent door to door visits from the JWs also . Perhaps these religions are aware that more and more people can now find out information concerning them via the internet and therefore are better placed to ask them tricky questions ?
