- Did you know that there are some people that see the King James Bible as far superior to other translations? That other translations like the NIV, ESV, NLT, and the rest are actually heretical and any attempt to ‘modernize’ the language of the Bible is seen as compromising the very Word of God? I love the KJV Bible but I never bash on other versions. Usually when I read God's Word, I use the KJV side by side with the ESV or NASB to have a better understanding of what the text is saying.

I Will say one verse is only clear in the KJV original. I found this After I received Healing of it though. This why it's good to have different versions. Bcuz at the time, I was only in NIV & receiving Lots from the LORD there to dispute lies I grew up with. (Filling of HOLY SPIRIT/RUACH HAKO'DESH "not for today" NOT! Tongues needed ESPECIALLY for today!!!) NEways, the verse is GEN 43:30 & it couples with JESUS speaking of Forgiveness in MATT 11:28-30; 18:1-35; JOHN 20:21.

There are versions of the King James Bible I have gods word and gods creations as in the holy spirit in lowercase letters, that is spells and spelling
So if I live deep in south america with no way to learn the English language that was used in 1611, I have no chance to be saved unless I can read the KJV?🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ I personally use different translations along with commentaries to try to understand as best as possible. But I mainly pray and rely on God to give me the discernment and understanding that is needed to understand His word.

Agree with you, RobRobSjr, people who live in non english speaking countries don't know that language, surely the KJO people don't expect them to learn English just so they can read their Bible.....these people have their own translation and most don't know who did the work, but it is still God's word

Exactly. This is such a Euro-Centric viewpoint. Jesus died for everyone's sins. The Word of God is for Everyone...not just white English speakers.

I’m so glad to hear this teaching. I have a friend who is KJV only and has come down on me for the NIV or the NKJV that I read. I grew up on the KJ and my Memorizing verses are as such. I don’t feel so guilty any more. Thank you. 🙏🏻😊. I’m 80 years old. I know the difference between paraphrasing and translations.
When it comes to the bible, the problem in the west is that we think that the bible is an American book. The bible is a collection of very ancient books written in very ancient hard to translate lenguages.

The Passion, The Message, and The Mirror are all awful. Thankfully there are _hundreds_ of good English translations. So those three can go into the trash.

My pastor uses NASB and another pastor uses ESV. I like these versions. KJV is hard to understand because of the wording. And NKJV I read because it’s easier to understand
Satan has been trying to keep the Bible from being in the language of the people for over a thousand years.
Rome used to attack those who translated the Bible into the language of the people.

Yes and in Russia, the orthodox church is keeping their old slavic language which modern russians dont understand, so this idea that something old and weird is truthful and Godly is worldwide.

Its actually alot deeper than that it has to do with what manuscripts were used for writing the translation, and where the manuscripts came from

The issue with the KJV is not the words we no longer use. The issue is the words that we still use, but whose definition is now different; sometimes opposite definitions!
YES! That is exactly why I cring when KJV-only people insist on bad-mouthing other word-for-word translations that do their best to help us make sense of context. Yes, we should elevate our understanding of the English language, but holy smokes, let’s make it accessible to the layman, please.
@@melindamercier6811 I think the problem lies in the ever shrinking semantic domain of words.
Personally, I learn much better when someone shows me the root of the word, where it comes from, how it relates to other languages; and I learn very little when I read a word I already have a preconceived notion of what it means, or if I look at a modern dictionary and it gives me the bare bones definition.
In other words, I learn more when I know the _why_ a word means what it means, not only the _what_ it means.
What the KJV forces me to do, is to use my Webster 1828 often, which means the words stick in my head better because I'm seeing how they're related to other words, and I get a more rounded image of the concept, because I'm looking at the word from a different historical angle.
It compliments devotional reading well, like when you're reading slowly, considering, chewing thoroughly.
It's like if you had a jewel in your hand: would you not turn it every which way, so as to have the light catch on it and glisten?

ʜᴇᴢ ᴜʟᴇʜ while I agree with your sentiments, there will always be a common vernacular of the current times. And those people deserve to understand what is said as well. Our language has evolved since even before King James, which is why (to me anyway) it should only matter that scholarly, accurate, reviewed and critiqued modern day word-for-word translations from the manuscripts themselves make it into the hands of those who do not have the inclination or ability to study and understand the language any deeper than at the surface level. I truly believe the Holy Spirit will work in the hearts of those who desire to know the Lord deeper by providing them a way to do so, be it by elevating their understanding of the language with a better word for word translation, or a great concordance/commentary that can still speak to them at their level but help them to further define/refine what is being said.
Some words have changed meaning. I think people should be aware of them. NKJV probably corrects their use to present day replacements that give the correct meaning of today.
Woahh that’s so true! I never thought of that! I haven’t read KJV but there are websites that give the original Greek and Hebrew languages and translate them for you. Bible hub for example👍

The chapter and verse numbers were actually added first by the Geneva Reformers for what became the Geneva Bible. I’ve never heard a KJV-Only person speak on the Geneva Bible, which preceded the KJV by a few decades. They always condemn later translations.

You can't become Reformation Era Bible translations to the corrupt, New Age versions. The Authorized Version was the best of good existing translations, as the original translators pointed out. Whereas the RSV and subsequent translations were undertaken specifically to obscure and cloud God's word.
While you're at it, there are the Douay-Rheims, the Bishop's Bible, the Wycliffe translation, the Tyndale translation, and several others. All of those preceded the KJV. But KJV is mostly in the same Jacobian English as Shakespeare, so it sounds lyrical and poetic to us. Aside from that, there's no reason to prefer it over those that preceded it.
It's scary when trying to get the most truth out of translations...but at the same time, doesn't the Holy Spirt help navigate through what is valid?
Well, you would think so. However, I still meet people that profess to be Christians that don't even know that we are supposed to pray "In Jesus Name"! I've also read a lot of Christian fiction/novels that don't seem to know that either. You would think that both the writers and the Editors would know that, but evidently they don't.

Most definitely! And that's why you'll find authentic and loving Christians who use different versions of the Bible but still find the same answers. The Word is living. The Holy Spirit is in our hearts and will help us understand. And we may make mistakes or have disagreements or not understand at times, but God is with us and we'll learn and grow.
I use KJV because that’s what I learned scripture from. I use other versions as reference/study.

I read the NLT New Living Translation it’s much easier to read and I get a depth understanding. It’s great!

I read The Living Bible when I first became a Christian. Met my Lord and Savior Jesus in there. It is not a translation though, it is a paraphrase. Just saying.
I appreciated your handling of this topic. Just passed this along to a friend who's dad was a preacher and is still a KJV only guy, and religious about it.
Being a graduate student of Latin as well as an originalist I've started translating the Vulgate Bible which was written in the 4th century AD taken directly from the original Hebrew for the old testament and Koine Greek for the new. I've been comparing it to the 16th century Douay-Rheims Bible which was translated directly from the Vulgate and so far it's spot on. I'm finding it a very interesting and rewarding experience.
Basically folks, we’re all at different levels in this walk with Christ. Reading the Word of the Lord is essential to our lives. KJV Bible is awesome, ESV is also, NIV and other versions also. Which one helps you understand God and His ways better? Use it. Reference and study to show yourself approved. Thanks for the upload 😎
Yes! I think it can be dangerous to be so adamantly KJV only, because that can turn away people who have a hard time understanding it from even bothering to read!

She didn’t mean people that simply use it. She means people who think it’s the only correct translation in the world and even better than the original languages. (Which makes no sense. Why would God have apostles write it down in Greek only to correct it with old English thousands of years later?)

Thanks for presenting this topic to your listeners :) I have also studied this issue, and agree that it is very difficult to 'discuss' it rationally with KJO promoters. I agree that using *multiple* versions can be useful for Bible study, but excluding the extra paraphrases like The Message and Passion Bible. Currently, I enjoy using the ESV the most since it seems to avoid some of the 'extra interpretations' that I have seen in other versions.
I used to also believe KJ only , and did a lot of research on how we got the Bible , to realize I was wrong.. which doesn't mean I am not careful to look into whichever version I am reading ! Thank you for taking the time to post this .. I am sure it will be helpful to many
Sometimes we land in such a conundrum seeking truth in the matters of Christianity. It feels like an endless rabbit hole and that does concern me as the age of knowledge seems to be upon us. It seems it’s the age of knowledge with many rabbit holes of truth and deception. At one point in frustration of dealing I was just falling into one more cultish ideology frame of mind seeking to follow Jesus at all costs, I adopted a strict red flag of if someone touts “it’s my or our way or the highway” then I take the highway because it smells like a cult. Then I remember with Christianity, it’s “Jesus is the only way to my salvation “basically another my way or the highway” and I felt weary. So I just pray “Lord Jesus, have mercy one me a child who desires to submit and sit at your feet, that has been and probably will be deceived and led away and astray, pray to God the Father that I might be delivered. Lead me to truth and set my eyes, ears, and little feet on the right path. It’s crazy confusing down here right now and can you come soon before it gets crazier? I want to come home but your will be done, not mine”. When I see Red Flags I surrender in humility with a White Flag prayer least I stumble in my ignorance and arrogance. This was good Melissa.
I grew up in the IFB movement and was taught heavy KJVOism... listening to Scripture on audio (since it removed the verse numbers when read) and comparing between KJV and ESV have really taught me a lot.
I was raised Catholic, converted to Non Denom when I was young, then walked away from the faith and claimed atheism for 4-5 years until I discovered the truth about "science" and about bible translations and their manuscripts , now I'm IFB and KJVO all the way and my faith has never been stronger or my life better
Yea I read KJV and RSV, when ever there is a discrepancy I will go to the Greek parallel or Greek interlinear--for New Testament.

Look for a church that conducts deliverance or fast and revoke them yourself.

Been there and have done that. I was just saved 3 years ago and I was so confused on which bible to read. I finally decided to get a bunch of different versions, read them obsessively and pray for discernment. I've settled in to reading and just absorbing. My favorite verse that really got me going back then is Matthew 17:21. Yep, it's missing from some of my bibles. I actually just write it in the bibles that are missing it. God is good.

My mom told me one time she was visiting a church and was asked to read aloud. But after asking her which version she was using she said the NIV. And they told her nevermind, we don't read the Non Inspired Version here. 😲

@Mom By The Sea There's problems with every single translation. All these versions has caused us to drift from conversation about our Lord Jesus and into debates about Bibles. We're losing focus as is evident in most American churhces
Yikes, perhaps they should read Proverbs 16:18 in that inspired version of theirs. NIV may not be a clear word for word translation, but it’s a far cry from lacking the integrity of the Scriptures like these newer versions that come out without a single scholarly review.
😆 I like that new one about NIV (non-inspired). Too many things watered down in the NIV, it crosses the line. It doesn’t even take a discerning mind to see that. Just read a few good versions before you pick up the NIV and you’ll see it clearly!
The NIV is _the best_ thought-for-thought translation (as opposed to word-for-word, such as ESV and NASB).
Of course Satan opposes God's Word being in the language of the people, so he pushes KJV-only.
One thing to consider when wondering why so many translation is money. Copyrights are given to certain Publishers make money by copyrights
Even the KJV is copyrighted. The holder is the king or queen of England. I've got one KJV that has "copyright" in big enough letters so I don't need glasses.

You aren't kidding! The devil knows the KJV is a stumbling block to learning and understanding God's message to us, so he deceives some people into this KJV-only idolatry to create confusion and division. He also gets the KJV fan to puff up with pride by declaring "I'm KJV". Ok, but I've been comparing many different English versions side by side for six years on a daily basis. Its bad enough trying to figure out the South London dialect of 1600, but then the KJV throws in goofy stuff like unicorns and "Easter". Oh then there's the deliberate mistranslations on top of that.

Although the fact that words change meaning is a problem for the kjv in of itself.
When you have to translate the translation, the translation isn't quite doing it's job.
There is a big difference between praising God and His Word(the Bible), and idolizing a translation.
Praising a translation over praising God's Word is idolatry on a grand scale.
The very fair & reasoned approach you take to all of your teachings is inspiring and edifying. I just love the very tender-hearted, thoughrful way you present your teachings. Who could possibly get (legitimately) angry with you...even if they disagreed? 😊

I’m not familiar with the King James Version I just know it’s popular. I was raised Catholic and for the last year have been truly studying the Bible and moving away from the new age. What I do know or have always been told is that the Catholic Bible is the only version that contains all the books written, while other denominations and versions purposely exclude the 7 books we have included. You’ve just piqued my interest in this and although I’m going to go research it myself, I’d love to see a video on that subject. Thank you I love your videos, they are helping me make so much sense of all of this.
The NIV takes out Acts chapter 8 verse 37. Look up the missing verse see what it says. That to me is a perverted version of the word of God.
When God says I never knew you, who do you think He's talking to? Those who think they are Christian. Those who think they can do better than what Jesus Christ the Lord did on the cross, by working their way to heaven. These perverted versions teach you have to be a good no sinning person to get to heaven, that is not what the King James 1611 version teaches. It teaches that only through the finished work of Jesus Christ are we saved. It's clear in KJV. Only one way to be saved.
I spent years looking for something I thought comparable to KJV. I am finding the ESV as a second love. I think ESV has really helped me understand more easily the KJV and often read them together. Also I have more recently gotten more into research topics and finding greek, Hebrew, etc so interesting!! Loving really searching out the word!
I use the KJV and ESV also - I think it's the best combination when reading/studying the Bible.

🔥🔥 Cannot appreciate you enough for taking the time to do a study of this. I was always a KJV lover but recently returned to reading the Amplified Version and with some persuasion from my teenage daughter, started reading the ESV which I love also. For me personally, I realised that I enjoy reading the Bible more when reading the Amplified or ESV. I still use and quote from the KJV often because it's what I was raised with.

Thank you for this, I've learnt something new and valuable. I believed the kjvo thing for a short while after a friend mentioned it, but struggled with understanding it myself and came to the "understanding" that it is just another translation and God has reached many people through different translations. I'm also aware of being careful with some translations. Thank you for your balanced and insightful teaching.

I had this same question come up in my own studies recently. Realizing that some Bibles have different or missing text can be startling when you aren't aware of how translation work happens. I think it's important to check things on your own, look at different translations, make comparisons, etc. The Word is simple and beautiful. The Word is complex and amazing. Thankfully, there are so many resources available online where you can actually see the Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic texts side-by-side, and other resources that are so valuable in allowing us to bring all of it together. I was so blessed when I started looking at Greek translations along with my KJV AND my NIV...some languages are so rich and beautiful. But a word taken out of context can mean something entirely different than what it was meant to mean....and looking into the original languages really open up a whole new world of the beauty of the scriptures. A perfect example is the word LOVE, as mentioned in this video. Even the names of God throughout the Old Testament...if we only see the name of God as "God" or "Lord", we miss so much in comprehending the depth and beauty and complexities of a God who truly, truly loves His creation. I don't want to miss that...so I will keep studying with every resource I have available to me.
At the same time, however, it is IMPERATIVE to be aware that there is such a huge attempt at deception by the enemy. We need to be aware....we need to be careful, and we need to hang on to the righteous hand of God as we study, as we learn, as we are being faced with all of the New Age/Christian Mysticism stuff that can be so misleading...a lot of people don't even open their Bibles (see the statistics, it's MIND blowing to think that a person who calls themselves "Christian' don't open their Bibles, but instead rely on the teachings and writings of other (fallible) humans. I spent years getting excited about every new book I could get my hands on....and thereby missing the revelations that God had to show me for ME.....it's a billion dollar industry, and every book is not necessarily what we need to be learning from....we need to stay in God's Word....and prepare ourselves so that when false teachings do come across our desks, we will be able to ferret them out. God is so good....

I highly recommend investing in a parallel Bible - I have one with four translations side by side (NIV, NLT, NKJ, MESSAGE). It makes comparison easy because it provides a spectrum of interpretation. My personal study has increased greatly because the more paraphrased versions help you understand what's going on while you still have the more literal translations to compare 👍(I also use the ESV version on my phone which you can download for free👍) how blessed are we to live in times such as these.
BibleGateway.com is an awesome tool. Up to 5 parallel translation at a time. Plus the Complete Jewish Bible and Orthodox Jewish Bible often help with fleshing out a word especiallly in the OT. The Mounce Interlinear Greek-English is a frequent tool, its interesting how close the NIV is to it.

The CSB is my new favorite. But I read with a Strong's Concordance and cross-reference with other versions (like 2-3 other versions) at the same time. I like getting a more panoramic view of scripture.
I love kjv and it is my central bible translation. But I have learned more reading through the old testament this year with a NLT version than I ever have before. I think God will use whatever translation you are reading and excited about and teach you.

Thank you so much! A friend and I a few weeks ago were wondering why it seems some versus were missing. It made me not trust some of the other translations even though reputable pastors use the . Now I see why.
The ones I don’t trust are the passion and message but the other ones I read I do trust
I do read the kjv but I have other translations with me to help me understand what I can’t when I read it
As a newish Christian I fell into the KJV only camp but it put me off of reading it! It was too much! I switched to NIV and loved it but then found out about "missing text" especially Jesus' own words which concerned me so I've got a NKJV now! I just got blue letter Bible to compare too!

I usually use the New King James because I lack any confidence in manuscripts from Alexandria that aren’t corroborated by manuscripts from the Byzantine or Antioch families.

Check out the Modern English Version, it's based on the same underlying texts as the KJ and NKJ versions. It's kind of became my secondary text after the NKJV

I'm not KJ only, but I am KJ first. I use others, but not as much. When I see a difference, I stick with the KJ. If someone has a different version, I don't shame them, but I think it's good to be aware of some differences.
Hi Melissa, I am really enjoying your videos. Please keep bringing us more content to help us understand. I have recently become aware that I have been following a “New Age version of Christianity”. I was hit like a bolt of lightning with this realization while watching a YT video from Ray Comfort. I don’t know a lot about him really but his message knocked me down to where I saw that I have been a New Ager without knowing it. In any case, I have dusted off my BIBLE and am in the process of planning out how to start reading and studying it. It is a NEW CENTURY VERSION. I wonder if this version is OK. King James is wonderful but DIFFICULT. Also, any advice on where to start? This will be my second time around and I would like to read daily from now on.
I enjoy your videos and just wanted to send you a topic suggestion for a future apologetics video. How do we reconcile God´s sovereignty over and foreknowledge of everything that happens in our lives with man's free will? How much of what goes on in our lives (the good and the bad) is our "responsibility" (a result of our free will and our choices) as opposed to God's will? Not sure if I articulated that very well, but it's a tough issue for me and I don't have a good answer. Would be cool to hear your thoughts, as well as any suggested references to other resources
here's my thoughts as a non-denominational Christian I read the new King James version I don't typically try to read the King James version that I bought I do read my new international and I do read the ESV the nsab the RSV etc. I haven't seen any distortions in the King James version of scripture but if there is you know I don't know what those distortions are, but I'd prefer rather to read the two Bibles that I have which are the new King James and the new international.
I've been wanting to get a NLT or CSB, I have NIV, ESV, and NKJV, what do you suggest? I find NLT and CSB easier to read than NIV, ESV, and NKJV.

The “older manuscripts” that were found were from egypt and that’s the reason most KJV only don’t want to trust those manuscripts. That history matters to understand where KJV only is coming from.
Other translations use more recent transcripts. NASB is a more accurate translation
Yes but KJV, relies alot on the Catholic churches Latin translation, the Jewish Masoretic text which dates to around 1000ad, 1300 years newer than the Septuigent (which is what the Apostles used. The JKV was the best the folk in the 1600's could do, I wonder how do it's verses compare with the Georgian, Armenean, Coptic, Ethiopian and Syriac Bibles which were very early translations only a few hundred years a.d. not 1600 years a.d.
I find this so intetesting. I am from South Africa and grew up in the Dutch Reformed church. I my language,Afrikaans, we also have a old Afrikaans translation and a new Afrikaans translation and many people feel the same about these translations as English readers feel about the KJV. You could say many people are old translation onlyist. I like the old 1953 translation because I grew up with it and know it the best but there is nothing wrong with the new 1983 translation. I feel it is more important to read your bible that to worry about the translation. I actually love the Good News English translation because English is not my first language and it is easier to read.
I enjoy your videos, and as a long time Minister, I continue to use the KJV. I generally don't disparage other versions, but you mentioned the really bad ones. But I do believe people such as Westcott and Hort intentionally wanted to discredit the Bible as not being inspired. Have you seen Chuck MIssler's video on the last 12 verses of Mark? So when I was young I was given a King James version Bible. I tried to read it, it was just too hard to understand. Recently I purchased a NLT Bible and was excited because I could understand it. Please tell me it's reliable.

I tend to think those are good to use alongside more literal translations, not in place of them.
Some of these new "translations" are not truly translations but one person's paraphrase, like "The Message".
Those are literally called paraphrases, not translations.

Melissa, I love your channel. Thank you for your videos. I too, used to be KJO for about 20 years! But it was Mike Heiser that helped me see the error of my thinking, and it was through his Divine Council teaching and understanding the Old Testament better. I would like to add something to one of your statements. If I am correct, the chapters and verses was added to the Stephanus 1551 Greek New Testament. Not sure about Old Testament. Maybe the Geneva 1560 ?? But again thanks for what you are doing!
Newer version use text from Alexandria region in Egypt which was known for gnostic beliefs. King James uses texts from Antioc. There are differences that many of the Alexandrian texts have with 1611 KJV and does change the meaning of the verse. You can see some of the reasons by searching for KJV only on UA-cam. I do prefer the KJV, but I do listen to pastors that use other versions. If you listen to Biblical scholars most of them have gone apostate, not believing the Bible is the Word of God, denying the deity of Christ, or that Jesus was fully God and fully man. I would not say the KJV is the only thing to use, but for English speaking peoples, it is the best.

Hi Melissa, your perspective on this saddens my heart, but I believe you mean well, so I'll leave it at that.
For the record ,when I first downloaded the You Version app I saw the KJV was the default. Out of laziness I let it be, I grew to love it. I started reading the NLT when I was in HS. Just recently I came across the KJVO Movement and, I was persuaded to believe that way for a brief moment.

We have the same favorites! I own at least 15 translations, but those are my favorites!

Occasionally the Amplified, but do carefully because I know the words in the parentheses are not always what they would mean in each text of scriptures, and had used KJV, ESV, NASB parallel with the AMP so that I may get a better meaning used between them. There's such an attraction to new age and I realize how much I believed is wrong and I have much to learn, especially at the beginning of my conversion. 🤦♀️ Then had a pendulum moment to the other side (legalism, transactional, fear-based love) because I knew the progressive stuff was wrong after a time. Somewhat related to the video topic. Can the KJV be translated into other languages verbatim or would it have to be "altered" to fit the sentence structure of the language in question. I do happen to know that sometimes some foreign languages do not translate well if you are going from say Spanish to English on a word for word basis, you may understand what's being said but it might be a bit awkward. I tried to read a rulebook for a racing game that was published in Italy and apparently it was translated directly from Italian which makes important parts of it very difficult to understand.
I have actually heard a KJO in all seriousness say, “If it was good enough for Paul, then It’s good enough for me.”
My Grandad and Grandma dealt this way.

Excellent review. I was a third-generation Jehovah’s Witness. I had much of our translation the “New World Translation”memorized. So When I came to Christ for salvation I was so interested in how we got our Bible so I researched this topic, as I needed to know what the Bible really said and what Bible to trust. I bought A Hendrickson interlinear and a Strongs concordance. I also used the Greek interlinear that the Watchtower organization printed. I do believe there was a “conspiracy“ with that publishing house to create a book that promoted their view of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. For instance everywhere the Holy Spirit is talked about in the original Greek it says “He”they changed Him or He to “it”
Praise God that you are out!!! I am getting ready to start a Bible study with a JW couple to witness to them. I know 99% of what is wrong with the religion but have not had much success convincing any thus far. I ask lots of questions to keep them engaged but every time I question their explanations because they don't make since or don't line up with scripture they literal just run away. Any advice?
I was a Jehovah Witness for 30 years, it almost destroyed me when I realized it is a cult. I still struggle with other Bibles at time but I don't ever use the new world translation anymore. Glad your out of the organization as well. Blessings to you. 🥰💓🥰
@@DoctrinesOfGrace my advice is to pray for them and run. The only way to show them truth about their lies is to show them the REAL history of their religion. I met many people at the doors who I studied with and not one ever changed my mind, when I saw the study was not "progressing" , I stopped the study because that's what the organization tells you to do. Thats my opinion and advice.... its actually a very controlled group of people being led in darkness.
I have always been a Christian but I just recently noticed my struggle to say “He” instead of “it” when referring tot eh Holy Spirit and I feel so regretful that I was never corrected until recently! I want to give God the Holy Spirit the most utmost respect that is within me. He is my God who comforts, convicts, and advises me!
I found a new world translation Bible at a second- hand book shop. I noticed down the middle of each page is a column with lots of Bible verse references (Proverbs 3:1, Ephesians 2:5, etc). Is this column a prompter to remind JWs which Bible verse to take the 'student' to next? Is that how JWs know so many Bible verses by heart?
quick question: What should translators use if translating to languages other than English? Would a KJO supporter suggest starting with the original manuscripts or with the KJV?
When translators are translating into say, Swahili or Japanese, they typically use the Critical Text to translate into that language. Each language has its own idioms and colloquialisms. So trying to translate from English into the languages I mentioned would be extremely difficult because English has its own idioms and some of the words we use would be an insult in those languages.
I like this - it's good explanation and it's very important. I started out when I was a kid with the NIV and tried various translations. I think when you start to study God's word most of what you are saying in this video starts to naturally shake out. I find that the Standard Version (didn't know that was another name for the King James until recently) is a very good translation. I like to read the various translations and compare them to either the Greek/Hebrew Interlinear. There are a couple of verses in the KJ that are not so hot IMHO however I find that with virtually every translation which is why I think it's important to read a couple or few different translations referencing back to the original Greek/Hebrew. God tells us "these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God." 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 ESV If we submit ourselves to the work of the Holy Spirit as we read His word instead of trying to be right in our knowledge and understanding by our own power the Holy Spirit will reveal the things of God to us in HIS word. Get a Parallel translation and an Interlinear and compare. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding and the LIVING word of God will be revealed to you. There is good reason why God tells us to humble ourselves before Him. Personally I like the Amplified version as it helps to bring things out like a combination of a literal and a paraphrase. The KJ is an excellent and very accurate translation however I find the thee's and thou's a bit of a slog somethimes. That said when you read "What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh."
1 Corinthians 6:16 KJV it's just such a excellent way how it says What? Know ye not..." It's like saying are you kidding me guys don't you know this!?!? It's like you can hear the shock in the author's voice like how can you not know this.
I would encourage people to be diligent rather than arrogant with God's word and you will find the Holy Spirit will reveal
new things to dry bones ;)
Something with regards to the KJ indirectly I find somewhat concerning for example is what appears to be a transliteration of the KJ into the Russian bible. There are frequently poorly translated passages where I will read in parallel the Russian with various translations including the KJ. Missing wording and/or poorly chosen wording that isn't even accurate to the KJ. Something to be mindful of as I'm not sure how many other languages are transliteration from the KJ rather than the original text.
Lastly.. if you're still with me lol.... someone sent me a verse one day from the Passion translation and it sounded so off so I read the same passage from several different translations and my thought was I had zero interest in using it as a parallel translation or even reading it at all. I won't call it a garbage translation but I'm not coming up with a suitable alternative description. Never really thought about it after until I listened to this explanation about the Passion translation and gives me affirmation with regards to mycexperience so thank you for that.
My ESV has the end of mark in brackets and my NKJV has a footnote saying the earliest manuscripts don't have these verses.
Thank you Melissa I was saved using the KJ V , but now I use the NKJ as my main bible, but NASB, NIV, NLT and ESV as studies. My pastor uses NIV but will add NLT at times. A prior church I attended about 10 yrs ago brought in the Message, and didn’t approve of it at all as the word of God.

I have a question: I have heard from what I thought was a Christian source that we need to be careful about our words because when we make statements we are "making agreements" with either Jesus or Satan, strengthening either the truth or falsehood of our speech. Is this true? Is this a New Age doctrine?

God’s Word finally became fully open to me when I requested and got a NIV translation from my family in my mid twenties for Christmas. I have never since received such a wonderful gift. I have also gotten and read from other translations and paraphrases. To me the most important thing to know in getting and studying a new translation to understand the difference between a translation or a paraphrased Bible, I.e. The Book, The Message, The Good News Bible, etc. or understand when it is a thought to thought which is a firmly held to stand up to strict translations. Also, as the argument goes, the KJB is the “first Bible” ever written. Not so. The first Bible printed was the Gutenberg Bible. All prior to that were scripts or hand copied word by Word which were for the ecclesiastical. The first printed Bible for ‘public consumption’ or language of the day was the Geneva Bible (1560) followed by the first English translation with the KJV in 1611. Many other versions were printed during this time but KJV of 1611 became the law of the land. Since then the Bible began a whole new revolution of thought which led to changes in culture, in law, in religion, and as we’ve unfortunately seen, in politics. This was also behind great revivals and good works driven by faith as well as conflict in interpretations leading to denominational beginnings and conflicts, political conflicts, wars to fight or not to fight, just versus unjust, and conflicts in political realms even as we see today. As Malissa states, it is a fascinating study so I would encourage anyone to do the work of the Berean and study where your favorite translation came from and exactly how it came to be.
Originally the Bible was written mostly in Hebrew and Greek. I'm sure you know that, but I wanted to point out that you're talking about how we got our English language Bible, just in case anyone wondered.

I have an uncle who is a staunch KJO and follower of the Shepherds Chapel. I have listened to hours of what i call"sermons" from him. Mind you, I have learned a lot but I have also picked up on how the shepherds chapel and my uncle tend to believe they ARE God.
I would love to know your thoughts on the shepherds chapel.
I personally see them as almost cultish.
Unless he's it's been changed, Eugene Peterson wrote in the introduction to The Message not to use it as a study Bible, but a readers bible. He said that there are much better translations for study.

My Grandpa (who I owe a tremendous debt to for his sharing the Gospel with me as a kid) was the same. I started with NIV (although ironically I can't stand the newer NIV) and still continue with it to this day.
We never argued about it but it also hindered us from having mutual edifying conversations after I became a believer. He was so dogmatic about the KJV that it really hurt my growth as a new believer and raised my suspicions about the Bible in general ... not a good way to start my walk. I now look back on those days and find it somewhat humorous that he was so influential before I was saved but mostly insignificant afterwards and all because of a translation preference
Then you should propose the idea about LSB (Legacy Standard Bible) it's not a reader-oriented Translation but, Author oriented translation.
Me and my dad have also talked about this. He's KJV only, and I used to be. Since studying and don't research in translations, they all basically say the same thing but the verbage is different.
There's only 3 "translations" I do NOT recommend and they are: the message, the passion and the mirror Bible
I am a staunch KJV supporter, think it is the translation to use. Never have i met someone who says it is more accurate than Greek. There ARE some of us who believe it is the translation to use but aren't hateful.

The pastor at my church sometimes has us read the Passion translation in Bible study but I switch it to ESV or NIV! Our church mainly uses NIV so I keep wanting to question him about it! I love our pastor and I learned a lot of biblical truth from him but I’m concerned about that!

My old church was an ardent KJV onlyist and even spoken about the pastor's wife behind her back about giving a new convert a NKJV Bible.
This was a very thoughtful video and good to get us thinking. I do use the KJV as a good word for word translation. Two verses that the KJV has helped me see more clearly than the modern translations are 2 Timothy 2:15 and Galatians 2:7. The KJV has helped me to see the distinction between the Gospel of the Kingdom for Israel and the Gospel of the Grace of God for the Body of Christ. Studying this out has been a real eye opener for me and has helped me to see God’s Plan for the Ages. Thanks for sharing your videos!
