    Hi Chris can I give you some advice on long range casting set up with the shimano fixed spool reels. When putting braid on the braid should be no more that 3mm away from the lip of the spool not like Ken done for you on here as you will now have tons of resistance against the line from the spool. The shock leader should be 2x the length of your rod + 4 or 5 extra wraps on the spool again reducing friction from big heavy mono. The way Ken has set your reel up you loosing at least 50 yards on your cast if you have the potential to use a long distance casting style like OFG OR PENDULUM. I hope I don't upset you with this post and I know this post is 3 years ago but the shimano surf and carp reels are designed for full capacity of line on the reel spool and certainly not 96 yards of mono that is just going to throw everything off when casting. I have this same reel and I'm using 50lbs daiwa evo 8 braid with a 80lbs spiderwire leader and when I'm casting I have about 5 turns on my spool and I'm using a century T900 Sgt 14ft4 rod and I can cast with a plain led 230 meters with a simple modified pendulum cast for fishing. 96 yards of leader on a reel in most anglers hands you wouldn't get much braid off the reel maybe 20 yards maximum. Hope this helps you 👍

    A little pointer for setting up your long rod quicker. Align the guides and reel as good as possible, then use a craft store paint pen to draw a small line where the rod sections connect. Now you just line up your marks and you're ready to fish. It's much faster than fine tuning the guide placement every time you get ready to fish. I saw this on another channel and do it to all of my big rods.

      Sounds like a great way of aligning the pieces faster! Thx:)

    Another great video scuba. Im an avid surf angler here on Texas coast, what is your opinion on the shimano torium 20 multiplier reel? Is the torium good for surf. casting? Can u get the Ultegra here in mainland, is the teel good for saltwater?

      Since i made this video the Shimano Ultegra 14K is now sold in the US. It's now my favorite surf fishing casting spinner. I also have the 5500 CI4 & the 10K. I've never used the Torium 20, in Hawaii the Torium 30 is the "go to" reel for the majority of GT shore anglers. I assume the 20 would be a great drum reel. Thanks for always watching my videos Albert Cervantes! Have a super 2018:)

    Hi Scuba, nice video... with this reel, how far can you cast? thanks

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  6 років тому

      Never really measured the distance. All my Ultegras (5500, 10K, 14K) casts extremely far so i never had the curiosity to measure the casted distance yet. But since my 14K has a 50lb mono top shot it shouldn't cast as far as the others which are all braid. I compensate for this by putting on a heavier casting lead to increase my distance.

    Hey scuba chris... Is the main shaft on the ultegra thicker than the one on the okuma surf 8k?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  4 роки тому

      Sorry, i don't have the Ultegras anymore. Also was getting "wobbling" issues with the 14K & had to send it back. A battle with a stingray mis-aligned that shaft. The 5500 was the most solid by far. The Surf 8K's have exceeded my expectations. Only a $100, high line capacity & powerful. For the price of any Ultegra i can purchase 2 Surf K's w/extra left for line. Shimanos are good but they s***w you on what they charge for it.

    if you gotta send this reel in to get serviced do you send it to the UK or will the Hawaii/USA shimano service it for you? Also, what is the purpose of the mono topshot?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  7 років тому +1

      The USA Shimano can't service this model. Like certain Japan Shimano's you need to send back to the country of origin. Here's a link of what Shimano models the USA service branch will accept-

    Hi guys...I have a problem, and i dont have any explanation for it.
    I bought 2 xsd....they r brand new, 1 mounth old...never been on rod, and mono free...
    When im turning handle on the first one it goes smooth, easy, like it should be...when im turning handle on the other one it doesnt go so smooth, it feels like its having resistance of some kind....
    What it could be wrong with other one?
    Tnx a lot.

      Assessment would be impossible without reel in hand to troubleshoot the possible problem.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  4 роки тому

      I got mine via eBay from the UK. It came in with the same issue. The seller refused to address the problem & ignored me. I sent it to CA Shimano. They said it was a bent spool shaft & they fixed it. I said before using this reel when i have a decent strike (shark,ray,,etc) that reeling get's "sticky" afterwards. The spool shaft is meant more for carpers than for salt water use. I got rid of my 14K/10K because of this. Now the 5500 lasted because of the thicker spool shaft. I wrote the Don Coffey US connection about my concerns but again i was ignored. This was the reason i got rid of all my Shimano's.

    So how long are your casts?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому +2

      I haven't gone back to that rig in a long time. I found after using the 14K that it was really the same in size and castability as the 10K. Also the stem was a bit wobbly when i got hung-up (a big concern shared by others). The 5500 unit was a much better unit. I now use the Surf 8K for long distance casting. One has 250yd of 50lb braid backing to 100yd 50lb mono top shot & the other 250yd of 65lb backing to 80yd 40lb mono topshot. The latter casts much further because of the thinner diameter top shot line. Also when both 8K units get hung-up i can power break that line with no wobbling stem that's inherit with the Ultergras.
      I used all 3 Ultegras for years so was very familiar with the pros & cons. I spent over $300 for just the smaller 5500 but was better built then the 10K & 14K. The 14K was better for Carpers, not for salt water usage. The 5500 was perfect for salt water. I've been using the massive Surf 8K's for almost a year and i'm extremely happy with them. MSRP only $99.99ea. 40lb max drag. Built for salt water usage. Casts far with deep spool line storage & line layering system. I was into Shimano during that time, ran me broke because i'm purchasing the name. Like my dive boat, my 17ft McKee costed me 1/2 of the cost of a name brand 17ft Boston Whaler. The McKee was a true 17ft boat vs the 16'7" Whaler advertised at 17ft.
      I had to learn the hard expensive way when it came to diving & fishing. But i learned. Could've bought 3 Okuma Surf 8K's vs 1 Ultegra 5500 that's half the size. But at that time it was the only long distance line layering spinner on the market. Good luck Alexei:)

      @@ScubaChris Thank you for your answer, let me ask you, whats the casting distance was on 5500? lets say if you throw a 3ounce weight?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому

      Casting distance was ok, it was the power of bringing the fish in & the price were the main issues. I hated getting hung-up using Ultegras. Hard to break the line without putting strain on that spindle.

    • @thesaltysquirrel3425

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  5 років тому +2

      @@thesaltysquirrel3425 I'm currently using the Okuma Surf 8K ($99.99 MSRP) & the Okuma Rockaway 6K ($89.99). These are extremely inexpensive compared to the Shimano's. Both are long distance caster w/no wobbly spindle issues. And at a fraction of the cost of these Ultegras.

    you killed that spool bro.... why the hell would you use BRAID backing instead of the reductions....???

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  6 років тому

      I NEED line for runs. Can't get yardage using thicker mono so have to use braid backing. I 8 & bait using this monster spinner. Rated at 44lbs so not bad. Can handle big fish. I went with a long mono top shot for 2 reasons-
      1) Tells me how far i casted.
      2) If i slide it's far easier using slippery monofilament over braid.
      Where i live & fish we have big critters from sharks & rays to GT's waiting to strip spools. I'd prefer going straight heavy braid for those long runs but most areas here has coral reefs. Now that you've brought this to my attn i should use the 2nd spool for all heavy braid.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  8 років тому +2

      I've had the rod new in the case for awhile now. I never used it because i felt the reels available in the US weren't the correct match-up to compliment the SeaHawk. Then i read about Shimano's European release of the 14000 Ultegra for long distance casting. I was sold. Just had to find a retailer willing to ship International to Hawaii. This is a pain as some US dealers won't ship to Hawaii, or it'll cost extra. Then i found out the company i've been dealing through eBay, Anglers Corner (www.anglerscorner.co.uk) where i've been purchasing my Breakaway Cannons at 50% of what other dealers are selling, just started carrying this unit. Only $23 shipping and just 8 days latter i received it. I wanted to field test it today but a huge storm rolled-in from Kauai last night & parked itself over Oahu. At 8:40am now it looks like late evening outside & pouring big time. For it's size the rod is unusually light, in comparison my Daiwa 3pc Ballistic weighs more. Also the "Matt Black" edition of the Ultegra 14000 is extremely light, much lighter then expected. Once the rain passes and i can find some "clear" water i'll try this out.

    How much 80lb braid can you load on a 14000 size reel? Can you fish large sharks with that set up?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  2 роки тому

      Ok, guess i'll have to spill the beans on this. I hooked a Cow Nose Eagle Ray using this. The shaft bent out under the pressure. At the time i had 3 large Ultegras. Shimano took care of me & had this replaced/repaired & sent back. I got rid of all of them. I even noticed how the diameter of the shaft was extremely thin. And i spent big bucks purchasing Shimanos. That's when i switched to mostly Penns, Okumas, & Quantums. Wanted to try Daiwa but was already dismayed at the high prices & noticeably thin parts used by Japanese companies (plus i was the one who discovered a faulty Daiwa rod that broke on 2-sizes-they took care of me as well). But i must say in all fairness i did keep my Shimano Twin Powers. Those were built right! The earlier Okuma White Azores were my favs from Sports Authority. The price of 3 large units was still less than the 5K Twin Powers so i made the jump. Those spinners held-up! Never got rid of them after all these years. The only spinners that i have now that can take a huge strike are my Makairas, Twin Powers & Azores. They've stood the test of time.

      It's one of my favorite lines as well. I recently noticed i use 50lb mono & braid a lot. Might invest in a bulk spool. Recently i've had an episode which has limited my ability to get out & fish. I did go out before sunrise this am with only a backpack & a light 8ft whipping rod. It was ok but taking everything slowly.
