Woodturning | Wet Wood Coloring and Finishing Experiment on Arbutus - Sneak Peek at Shop Chicks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лип 2024
- In this video I turn a basic vase from wet Arbutus, very wet. I test coloring wet wood with Hampshire Sheen intrinsic colors and try a lacquer finish. This wood is amazing to turn when wet! I hope you enjoy this trial session, I think it is the best way to learn. Stick around till the end to see the chicks that have been making noise in the background for the past few weeks. I hope you enjoy this video, thank you to all who watch!

Well, I like it as it is. Thanks for letting me stop by 🌞
Always welcome Ray! I appreciate you watching!
You are a true artist with that skew chisel Lewis. What a lovely piece.
Thank you Jane, I have a long way to go with a skew! I appreciate it!
Hello my friend,
Fine Arts; These are the things that the human hand, head and heart work together. I watched a great design. Congratulations. See you. Big greetings.
Thanks Sahane, I appreciate it!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman see you. be happy.
I like both the darker colours and the lighter… both are beautiful. Hope you get the finish sorted out. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
I think it will come out ok, one way or the other! Thanks Sandra
Great work, Lewis - the coloring turned out great!
Thanks Rick, I appreciate it!
Gorgeous Lewis, just gorgeous.
Take care Lewis.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw, I appreciate it buddy!
The coloration technique was something that I’d like to try some time. Thanks
It is a lot of fun. I need practice but will get there! Thanks for watching!
I agree with you. I like the colors better after you sanded it back. Nice job.
The grain shows through better for sure. Thanks for watching!
That's a beautiful vase Lewis. I liked the dark colour, but the lighter colour works really well.
Thanks Jiggsy, it was nice wood to colour. I still haven’t refinished it but need to!
I like the green color, looks real nice.
Thank you , I appreciate it!
Thank you
I'll be watching , God bless
Thanks Bruno! I’m hoping it works out!
That is a beautiful little vase. I love the colors. It's possible that trapped water in the wood prevented the lacquer from sticking.
It could be James, a lot of variables. I appreciate you watching!
Great video thanks 😊😊
Thank you Henry, I appreciate it!
It looked different at several times but it looked great at the end.
It did change a lot Ronnie. I like the end colouring, just need to fix that finish! I appreciate you watching!
great job Lewis thanks for sharing
Thank you Shane, I appreciate you watching!
Beautiful.
Thanks so much Jack, I appreciate it!
Nice work mate. The colours look great knocked back, take care
Thanks Gav, I like them knocked back as well! I appreciate you watching!
Very nice. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Ward, I appreciate it!
Sometimes less is more I like the lighter color. Nice wo.
I like it better as well John, thanks for watching!
Very nice Lewis. I think if you can get the laquer to take it's gonna look amazing. But, it did turn out beautiful as it is. Great project and nice chickens :D
Thanks Japie! I’ll get it worked out! Thanks for watching!
Love it I'm an artist turned lather def going to try this can't wait ty
Lots of fun Rick! Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Good turning, beautiful finish, but I would prefer it with pedestal, the look before you part it off.
Thanks JC, I considered refining the pedestal but the colouring effect doesn’t work as well. Thanks for watching!
It's a nice subtle colour that doesn't hide the grain. I look forward to seeing how it turns out once cured.
I know it's easy to go from saturated to black, in a second of too much colour. I have a platter I redone platter I wrecked with a slip of 180 grit when finishing the bowl. I got the scratch out, but the colour just wasn't the same, after that. I know it can be a bit of a gamble when dyeing, but I'm anxious to learn and have a degree of consistency in my work.
Thanks for the demo, Lewis.
Thanks Jay. It is not fun when you touch any finish with sandpaper! It takes practice for sure an I am new to colouring so I have a long way to go. I appreciate you watching!
Gracias por transmitir . Buen trabajo con Buenas Herramientas
I appreciate it, thank you!
Looking good so far. :). I usually color with alcohol ink. Had to learn the hard way to give plenty of drying time to the ink before starting with sealer finish; in the case of sealer, if the ink is wet the sealer can start picking up the ink and moving it around. wet ink + shellac == oh those are some weird brown discolorations. Good luck :)
Yeah I think there were too many variables on this one! I appreciate you watching Aaron!
a really nice vase Lewis! odd that it wouldnt take lacquer. ive never had that happen, but, first time for everything.
them birds sure are gettin big. youre gonna have lots of eggs before you know it!
Thanks Dave, the consensus is too much moisture. Yeah I moved the chicks out of the shop, they outgrew the brooding pens quickly. They should be laying by October. These will triple the flock. Thanks for watching !
Lacquer on wet Madrona wood does not always work well. I sand it back, then wait until it dries to refinish the piece. Hope you get some good distortions as it dries. Usually it will pull more where the grain is figured. One of my favorite turnings is a piece with five knots in a circle, turned thin, and it pulled toward center at each of the knots without cracking. Quite unique. Hope yours dries evenly. The wet shavings don’t hurt for slowing the drying.
Surprisingly this isn’t moving. It is very thin so we will see when I get to the refinish work! Thanks for watching Valerie
Beautiful vase, Lewis! Well done! I LoVe how the color turned out and I can’t wait to see you get the finish lined out.
Thanks Seth, I’ll get I video out regardless of how it turns out. I appreciate you watching buddy!
Lewis, I really like the way the very subtle grain comes out with the colour. We have quite a bit of Arbutus (pronounced arbeutus here on the wet coast). I wonder if there might be some oil in the sap, especially if it was cut in the spring? This is a very cool experiment that I might try with some Poplar I just got. Cheers, Rick
Thanks Rick! It is great to turn, unsure of the issue, oil, water, bad execution haha. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful vase..Hope it dries with no problems..
Thanks Fran! It dried perfectly!
Great turn Lewis! I like the light color, but kinda wish the purple at the bottom hadn't gone away. I think the blend from purple to green would have been amazing. I don't have an airbrush yet and have only tried color blending on 2 pieces: it"s not easy using just a brush, paper towel, and denatured alcohol.
Great video.

One option, Joanne's (craft store chain) sells small spray bottles of alcohol ink. Usually works well for coloring, just have to wait for it to dry fully before moving on. I spray on and then rub it around with a lint free cloth.
Thanks Wesley! It will take me some practice to get decent at it but it is a lot of fun! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for that Aaron! I appreciate it
I love how the colour turned out Lewis! Hopefully the finish works out!
Thanks Heather, it will one way or another! Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed watching that Lewis, looking forward to seeing how you get on with the changes 👍👍
Thanks Brian, we will get it straightened out one way or another!
Well done on all accounts. The wood is very interesting. Looked like it was extremely plain until you added color. The color really enhanced the grain and made the piece interesting. Your shape, while being very basic, is a classic and will look good in any decor. The stain colors you selected worked very well. They looked great even before you added the sanding sealer. So sorry you had all those issues starting with the sanding sealer. Hopefully they will work out once cured and you are able to work on it again. Looking forward to seeing how you work it out. I’m sure it will be gorgeous.
Thanks Doug, we will call it a learning experience! I’m anxious to get it fixed. I appreciate you watching buddy!
Love the colours Lewis, looking forward to seeing the end result. Any ideas why the lacquer didnt take in some places?
Likely the moisture content Gary. Hopefully I can get it fixed! I appreciate you watching
Lewis
Like what you have so far!
Hope you can get a good finish on it.
I’m no expert but I’d say moisture.
I’d be interested in your thoughts on the pro edge diamond belt?
Tim
Thanks Tim. I think moisture is the issue. I really like the proedge with the diamond belt. Really great for the longer grinds on gouges and nice for the skew. I still prefer to do my traditional grind on the CBN and wolverine jig. I appreciate you watching!
I like the design. Looking forward to finding out how the finish turns out. If you find out why the lacquer didn’t take, it would be nice to hear about that as well.
Thanks Mark. I will not likely know for certain what the issue is but likely moisture. I’ll show the end results soon. Thanks for watching!
I have never heard of arbutus wood but it sure turns brilliantly, at least when it is rather wet. In fact Lewis, have you had any experience with turning it when it is very dry or knowledge from people who have turned it dry? It is a ver nice shape & the finish is very interesting in spit of its difficulties. It will be nice to see the final finish in the near future. Don from South Aust.
Hey Don, I turned a goblet out of dry arbutus 2 weeks before this one I believe. It is hard and finished nicely. Thank you for watching!
Very nice. I've had that issue with laquer as well. I wonder what the issue is.
Moisture content is the popular consensus. Thanks so much for watching!
Arbutus (Madrone in the US) is one of my favourite Timbers to turn. If turned wet it distorts in interesting ways. I have done hollow forms that were coloured and lacquered with very good results. As this is prone to crack I ruff turn and then boil and finish once dry.
Just wondering if you used a lacquer sealer? I spray on two coats before the lacquer.
I used a cellulose sealer. No cracks so I’m happy with that! I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for the experiment, I've often wondered what the results would be. Could it be the wood is just wetter in those area's. Looking forward to see finished item. Cheers Geoff
Thanks! Hoping to have a “fixed it” video out soon. I appreciate you watching
That wood looks a lot like Bradford Pear.
I’ve never tried pear. This was fun to turn. Thanks for watching!
I’m a new wood turner and I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for putting them out. Just curious…why did you use a skew and not a gouge?
Thanks Aly! This cut so well with the skew it really didn’t need sanding. I need the practice with the skew so when it makes sense I use it. Gouge would have been fine also. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Ah! Thanks for the reply!
Is it a vase to put flowers in or a cup to drink out of it it's very beautiful
Thank you Curtis! I going with vase in this one. Thanks for watching!
Do you need to sand to 1000, as sanding beyond 400 is undetectable when applying a lacquer or urethane. Sanding to higher grits is beneficial when applying a thinner oil finish. Will you add another coat of lacquer to cover the dull spots near the bottom as seen at 15:25.
400 is detectable in the colouring so I took no chances. I’m on the fence about the fix but will show what I do. Thanks for watching!
I’m thinking the moisture content of the wood caused the finish problem. What breed of chickens were those?
Most likely the issue. The chickens are barnevelders. Thanks for watching!
Did it not take the Lacqure because it was wet
Very possible Rob, thanks for watching!
Maybe it was still too wet for the lacquer?
Possible Eric, seems odd it was great in most places. I appreciate you watching!
