Never liked colouring wood but I have to say that is stunning. Absolutely beautiful bowl.
Thanks! I try and do things so people will like it a little more. 😉
I was inspired by your rich looking bowl. I took it one step further: after dye, I applied a coat of sanding sealer, and then applied JoSonja iridescent paint on top of the dye in little "splotches" in the bottom of the bowl and around the edges, to create the "BIG BANG" artistic look. Followed it with 20 coats of gloss lacquer. Fantastic.
Nice! I’ve seen some interesting things done with the iridescence. The string method is pretty cool also. I red dyed a willow hollow form and used some crumpled Saran Wrap to dap it on a while back.
Beautiful Piece and interesting process, thanks for sharing. Hope you and your family had a good weekend. Full View and Like 👍
Thank you very much! I hope the same for you and yours! Thank you for watching.
Omg that is absolutely gorgeous.
Terrific finish and Deft is my favorite as well. I first used Deft lacquer in 1962 and have used it since then. Back then it was all brush on so I would thin it to spray and bought it by the gallon. Today I buy the spray cans. Much easier.
There’s another one I’ve been interested in trying. It’s Mohawk. It’s precatalyzed in the spray can. It’s just much more expensive. I’ve looked into using automotive since it has hardener in it but for what little I use I’d have to be careful to keep it from gardening in the spray gun.
So beautiful! I’m assuming that deft lacquer is not food safe?
It came out absolutely gorgeous! I enjoyed watching the whole process.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this technique great job.
Hi just subscribed from watching Doug's Channel. He made ambrosia from watching your this vid.. I must say wow that is really gorgeous. The color and shine is so intense. I would have thought I was looking at colored Mica's and epoxy had I not watched the video. I don't know that's might look even better than than that. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Transparent dye really can help pop out the grain of the wood and make it so much more!
Awesome!! that come out incredible
Thanks!
Damn Brother that came out awesome! I used the Keda dye on an oak ply Subwoofer enclosure I built a while back. It came out so Good I want to try and make some bookshelf speaker boxes for the garage and try my hand at the Multi color dye on those. Extremely important not to get this on your skin while rubbing the dye! Ask me how I know! I had blue fingers for 3 weeks when my glove had gotten a hole in two fingers and I didn't notice it!! LOL!
Pohl Barn sent me your way! Glad he did! I subscribed!
Welcome! I try and mix it up with a little bit of everything.
new subscriber here, only just found your channel, love that bowl there is some real depth of colour to it
Thank you! And sorry for the late reply! 😬
That was a beautiful piece
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful bowl. what type of dye you are using in this video?
Really gorgeous!!
Thank you!
Truly stunning 👍
Nice work!
That looks fantastic, 👏
Thank you!!
That is gorgeous!
Thank you!
Wow, Nice job. I agree Deft is the best, that's all i use
Absolutley! Besides going full on mixing auto lacquer it’s the best
Looks good, nice work.
Thanks!
That looks great!
Thank you!
That looks awesome
Thanks!
Beautiful work
Thank you 😊
beautiful work, great colour combinations, and a fantastic finish, thanks for sharing.. subscribed!
Thank you sir. I see you play around with the iridescent paint also. It can have a cool ghost effect when over color! Have a willow hollow form I dyed red and marbled it on.
@@EppsCreations I have been known to stand in front of a lathe and destroy a piece of beautiful wood... I'm a big fan of colouring, especially spirit wood stains... loved the finish you achieved ... thanks for sharing..
But the high figured white wood is the best for it! When I turn maple and it’s curly it’s just a knee jerk reaction. I have a black and blue one on my Instagram that I did without a video and that thing turned out crazy. Sometimes I just enjoy turning without worrying about the camera and all the editing lol.
This is about the most stunning beautiful bowl I've ever seen! And I'm the type of girl who likes colored resin and wood. But this totally knocks any of those out of the park. Again absolutely gorgeous. I can't find the one you talked about doing with the iridescents? Have you done it yet or did I miss it? If you have please link so I can see. I would love to own one of these! Thanks so much for sharing. Subscribed
Thank you! Yea I’ve had questions on if it was epoxy, but nope, just dye. I’ve found some grain just needs a little extra attention and it goes from good to great!
But here’s the link to the one with iridescents

@@EppsCreations Awesome! Thank you I'll check it out. But NO you misunderstood I KNEW there was NO epoxy. I just have to say it one more time it's about the most stunning bowl I've ever seen truly it is 💞
That is awesome! I love it!
Thanks! You should see the jungle green one burl vase I just uploaded. Beautiful!
Nice work. I like how you went through the process. I have some Keda dye powder arriving soon to play around with. Deft is Def the way to go. One question: why the sanding sealer after the Danish oil and not the other way around?
Thanks! The danish oil is a urethane with oils. Lacquer will react with it. So the mylands acts as a barrier to prevent the two from reacting.
@@EppsCreations thanks, I didn't know that!
@@misfit4777 I learned a lot about clear coats and show room finishes from my dad. He use to do paint and body work.
OH MY GOSH!!! I Love this!!! Teach me your ways, Obi-Wan!!
Lol, it’s a fun process. Just have to remember you color mixing. And don’t forget to oil! Makes the grain pop.
Beautiful & perfect 😍
Thank you! ☺️
Those are stunningly beautiful. When you say "go light", could the same effect be achieved by diluting the dye concentration? I was also wondering to what grit you finished the bowl before applying the dye? Sorry if I missed it. Again, gorgeous bowls and hollow forms. I also really dig your resin and wood hollow forms.
Diluting it will make a lighter color. I finished it with 320 grit before dying it. Just keep in mind the thickness or you’ll bleed through in the pours of the wood.
Terrific job mate! Is Deft still your goto gloss spray?
Wow big bug on your shirt there at the beginning
Haha yea, dang stink bugs are an issue. They’re harmless but produce a stench when threatened or smashed. So it’s leave them be or swat/smash and get an stunk out. Have a serious hate for those things, but that’s what you get when you live in the woods in the south.
First one was still pretty sweet though
I was wondering did you sand any between coats of Laquer?
Fantastic. When I try to do multiple colors, they end up mixing and changing the colors completely. I don’t think I’m letting them dry long enough
Let them dry yes. But double dying is one of those “you have to choose your color wheel (mixing) due to going over with another color. Black is great as a base. You really can’t color it. So it’s best to use the blue + yellow = green and work it accordingly and layering as such.
What do you wet sand and buff with? I’m just getting into coloring and have gotten as far as multiple coats of lacquer. Thanks.
Just regular wet/dry paper. Start at 400/600 depending on how good you lay a finish. Then go all the way to 2000 grit. Buff with car polish on a foam pad and done.
Awesome video man! Couple questions, did you mention the type of dye you use? Also is that a harbor freight lathe? If so, how did you get it to go that slow? Thanks for any help u can give.
I used keda dyes. And yes it’s a harbor freight lathe but I removed the old motor and installed a 2hp 120v treadmill motor. I had to step down the speed with the right sized pulleys since it was a 6,000rpm motor.
@@EppsCreations oh wow... is it still a reeves drive or normal pulleys and you can control the motor speed now?
Brads Workbench I had to remove the reeves drive since the shaft on the motor wasn’t long enough. It has the flat belt pulley that was on the motor at 1” with a 4.5” flat belt pulley on the head shaft. The treadmill I got had the turn dial speed controller so that’s now what controls the speed. I added a tachometer with a wall plug in 18v dc converter. It will turn as low as 54rpm and high as 13000.
Love it
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I like it and ordered some keda ! Will zinsser sanding sealer work with lacquer?
Is it lacquer base or shellac based?
@@EppsCreations shellac
@@dirtysouth269 eh, it works but I’ve had better luck with mylands.
@@EppsCreations thanks for your time ! I will order some .
How are you mixing the die, 50 / 50 water and alcohol ?
is it just regular wood dye?
Did you just mix dye with water or did you use alcohol as well?
I used keda dye. Mix it as directed. You can use water or alcohol with it to dilute it. Alcohol flashes off faster and water makes it sit/penetrate longer.
wow
Thank you!
DON'T BOTHER with anything BUT DEFT!
IT WILL LAST, it WILL NOT YELLOW!
i have used it FOR YEARS and i guarantee it IS the real deal!
I had proprietary lacquer made by a very professional paint company specifically mixed for my art work( that includes wood) and even
as I thought this "special chemically designed" lacquer was going to give me an "EDGE" in my art sales and getting into galleries -- it really DIDN'T turn out
better than DEFT--- one thing my "specialty lacquer" did was; I was able to use LESS COATS, but- for the time and expense--- it was NOT better than DEFT!
So, I am back to DEFT, hopefully this gives you some feedback as to the quality ---don't forget to use a FULL MASK, protect your lungs!
Is it aniline?
Yes. But you have to mix t it. It’s dissolvable in alcohol, water and lacquer. Possibly urethane.
@@EppsCreations interesting. I once used powdered aniline in the thinner and alcohol.
@@RogerioDuarte that’ll work but if you’re going for a double dye, you may run into sealing the wood grain preventing it from absorbing more.
So nice, im trying this myself and after iv rubbed the oil in its gone very dark and the colours have lost their brightness, is this normal?
What oil did you use?
Danish oil, the same as you, iv just gone and cut it back and re dyed it and it looks better now, may just have left too much black on and not dark enough colours.
Yea you just have to remember the colors will become darker. And the danish oil has an amber effect on the colors also so just something to keep in mind. You don’t have to and can use just mylands but to me I think it pops the grain when you soak it with oil first.
Thank you, will remember that
Did you find the stink bug on your shirt?
😂 I did! They’re bad around here in the fall and winter. Like I’d love to torch the whole place sometimes they’re so bad.
Chatoyancy!
Absolutely. My favorite shimmer! Lol
Buongiorno, come si chiama la pasta colorata che ci metti sopra?
Bowl - Good.
Beard - Biblical
😂 love it! Short, sweet and to the point! That comment made my day! Thank you!
