Yea, I know. It's just not too worth it to go from the 1600 to the 1700 atm. After a generation though, with higher clocks and better IPC, it sure will be though [:
Dingleberry Tech from here only ryzen 2 its an worth upgrade, and only at 4.5 ghz minimum. That 1600 wont bottleneck any gpu in the next few years anyway
My Ryzen 3 1200 was surpringly good for gaming, overclocked pretty well too on a mediocre motherboard. On a better motherboard I could probably have OC'ed it over 4 Ghz permanently.
Jumped from what is basically prehistoric tech, aka an fx-6300, to a ryzen 5 2600x recently. Couldn't be happier. Now my 1060 can actually spread it's wings and fly.
They're *generally* better binned, some of the lower end Ryzen 7's can't hit 4.0 whereas nearly all of the 1800X Chips can. But overclocking an 1800X can be counterproductive as you lose it's 4.1Ghz XFR boost on one core at the cost of slightly better multicore over stock. It's a weird position to be in and you really have to think about your use case. Do you really want that one faster core? In that case, the 1800X might make sense. Are you mainly doing multicore? OCing a 1700 or 1700X then makes more sense. Theres also the very rare case of finding a golden Ryzen 7 that can hit 4.1 or 4.2 all core stable at safe voltages, but those are very, very uncommon.

I use my computer mostly for gaming, and after five years of gaming on my old FX-8350 I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 1700. While I know that in today's games that CPU is overkill and will not be fully utilized, I'm banking on keeping this CPU for at least five years. Hopefully with the extra cores and threads, the 1700 will still perform well even in 2022. I've learned when building my computers that although I may get a new graphics card every two years, I usually keep my CPUs for a lot longer, so I wanted to invest heavily in a higher end CPU for the sake of longevity. I couldn't be happier, my Computer runs better than ever. With my GTX 1070, I play all my games at Ultra settings on my 2560x1080 ultra wide at 60FPS or higher, even with multiple background downloads or programs running. It does all I need and more.

To think for a brief time in January-February 2020, if you paid attention, Micro Center was selling Ryzen 5 2600X 6 core 12 thread for $79.00. The 2019 made, mature manufactured 2600X(T) performs 5-7% faster than release version 2600X and are nearly on par with Ryzen 3600 at half the cost. Pay attention, not money. In August 2020 you can sell them for $120-150.00 with a $40-70.00 profit margin each.
Ryzen 5 1400 overclocked to 4.2 GHz here. Absolutely love the performance I squeezed out of it. And it's not even running a high end cooler; just a Hyper 212 and still relatively cozy temps. And after the huge letdown that was the FX series, I finally have some faith in AMD restored.

I think you should also have include telling people to buy faster ram even with higher latency with ryzen. It boosts performance by quite a bit. And also I still think that you shouldn't buy 4c4t nowadays. More games start to utilize those extra c/t and when you have anything in the backround it could have a bigger impact when compared to a more c/t model. 6c12t should be quite future proof I think and it also clocks in at quite a good price/perf
Shortyman17 I was thinking the same thing. its like you don't need it per say.... there's only a few games that wont be as good... but then a game gets released that you want to play but its an aweful experience because of a low end processor. Should always have some headroom I think. I still get a feeling of regret not buying that 2500k oh so many years ago.
The thing with going for a 1200 is that you save 100$ right now (so you can buy a ssd or better gpu) and that next year when zen2 comes out you can go for the R5 (2)600 or whatever for not so much :)

+BBear Why would you want a stock cooler anyway at that high level? At that point overclocking sounds like a nice idea. Prices depends on where you live, and custom coolers...don't cost that much..
I've used the Spire LED cooler on my 1700 for around half a year before I upgraded to AIO cooling. Great cooler for a bundled product, looks nice and allows for a mild overclock. It served me well.
Wonk 2600 just because with the 1700x with all that you are doing frame drops, slower loading and run times, freezes are gonna hit you hard. There won’t be an insane amount of drops but still to the point where you won’t be happy with the 1700x.

So far: Rendering, multi process calculations, Cernel Recalculations (Especially Linux systems profit for alot of cores). In gaming: A few exceptions can allready use 16 threads and the trend of "4 core being mainstream" will change with the new consoles. Because developers will now have systems as a base with 1 Zen 2 Chiplet, meaning 8 Cores 16 Threads as a baseline.

Got myself an R5 1600 not too long after release :] You know what's nice? How my upgrade path doesn't end at the laughable 1800x. I can theoretically upgrade to Ryzen 2, and possibly Ryzen 3 if 2 more SKUs come out before 2020 :D
Dingleberry Tech hello again ))
Aye, hey again :D
You can even take Ryzen 7 by now ;)
Yea, I know.

I didn't even know that the AMD Ryzen 3 is actually a good processor for gaming.
My Ryzen 3 1200 was surpringly good for gaming, overclocked pretty well too on a mediocre motherboard. On a better motherboard I could probably have OC'ed it over 4 Ghz permanently.
I played RE2 remake on ryzen 3 1200, without any problem.
Ryzen 3 doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's an excellent budget line-up.
Jumped from what is basically prehistoric tech, aka an fx-6300, to a ryzen 5 2600x recently. Couldn't be happier. Now my 1060 can actually spread it's wings and fly.
the audio for this and latest LTT is so ugh
I have an 1800X.... wish I would've known how easy it is to copy by just OCing a 1700/1700X. Still, minimal regret, I love this CPU.
Shiftyeyesshady I thought the 1800X was slightly better at overclocking
I know the minimal regret is less gaming performance than intel huh xD? But ur not regreting it is like 40% - 50% faster at multithreding xD.
I got a AMD Ryzen 5 3550U with 16 GB of ram and 512 PCie (Huawei Matebook 13) its so fast and fly through my work application - I dont game mostly lots of typing and several apps (Like Teams, Whats App, browser based systems & ETC ) This spec is more than i need - i have not had a single app taking no more than 3-4 sec I love this and i paid only 800$
I use my computer mostly for gaming, and after five years of gaming on my old FX-8350 I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 1700.

I treated myself to the Ryzen 2700x. It's not the CPU that is expensive, but the ram and graphics card and mother board.
A good 2700x build will run at over a thousand US dollars.
I just took a 2600X because I've barely scraped together about 900 USD, but the setup I have allows for quite a bit of upgrades.
Yeah, a better CPU or graphics card would definitely run me over 1000 USD.

Pay attention, not money. its been 5 years, you guys should do an update to this topic with the new CPUs that have come out.
One problem though...DDR4 prices are expected rise once again.
Still... For now, 4 cores and 4 threads are fine. In the future, when there will be more multi-core support, you can go for a Zen 2 or 3 chip instead.
The thing with going for a 1200 is that you save 100$ right now (so you can buy a ssd or better gpu) and that next year when zen2 comes out you can go for the R5 (2)600 or whatever for not so much :)
if u only play games, buying 3200mhz ram still not worth it since it only boost a bit, unless u also work with it
is it possible to download cpu?

+BBear Why would you want a stock cooler anyway at that high level? At that point overclocking sounds like a nice idea. Prices depends on where you live, and custom coolers...don't cost that much..
I've used the Spire LED cooler on my 1700 for around half a year before I upgraded to AIO cooling. Great cooler for a bundled product, looks nice and allows for a mild overclock. It served me well.

Wonk 2600 just because with the 1700x with all that you are doing frame drops, slower loading and run times, freezes are gonna hit you hard. There won’t be an insane amount of drops but still to the point where you won’t be happy with the 1700x.

but ... how many applications take advantage of multithread processing?
So far: Rendering, multi process calculations, Cernel Recalculations (Especially Linux systems profit for alot of cores).
In gaming: A few exceptions can allready use 16 threads and the trend of "4 core being mainstream" will change with the new consoles. Because developers will now have systems as a base with 1 Zen 2 Chiplet, meaning 8 Cores 16 Threads as a baseline.
Made my first build with ryzen 5 1600, no regrets.. Future proof cpu, imo...
