Engineers should work in the field before they are allowed to design anything, as far as I'm concerned. By the way, I have a brother-in-law who worked for Freightliner in Portland as an engineer and told him the same thing. This is coming from a 73 year old master mechanic who's been doing this for at least 50 years both in Vietnam and in civilian life. I think you are doing a fantastic job and you are not afraid to work on anything. I am from North Dakota.

Waren. In your mechanical field your the best there is. When you do this for so many yrs. and your customers keep coming back That just means your an excellent mechanic. My Dad used to do this for a living. I used to watch and hand him tools. I started by asking questions. And off I went. Your damn good. Your customers are damn lucky.

quit comparing hours when used on a farm 90% of the time it gets fixed is when it fucks up, "maintenance" isnt in the budget lot of times its redirected or renamed at lease payments let you fund us for life while we give you a redesigned model of what didnt work this year next year at lets say 2% for 25 years lmao

When my dad bought the new farm in early 60’s previous owner left a 49 Case that the engine was locked up. Put some diesel fuel in the cylinders and dad instructed me to hand crank it daily. After about a week it broke loose and it was the best tractor. Used it to get the newer Ford 9N started by pulling it. 🥱

Back in the 1970's I worked on a farm that had a Case 970. It spent more time in the workshop being fixed than it spent in the field. It too had the three speed powershift. In Winter it needed a loop of pipe on the spool outlets and left to run for half an hour to heat the transmission oil before it would even move. This was on the coast of Scotland in an arable farm area, not in Alaska.
In the end the tractor driver refused to drive the thing because he thought its constant breakdowns reflected badly on him. It was replaced by a Ford 7700, which was a four cylinder giraffe of a thing that lacked engine operating range and low end torque, but kept going for the most part and was easy to maintain and repair when something did go wrong, which was rarely.

We had one come in our shop with the exact same issues. We found all the brake PTO and clutch disc had come apart. We split and reassembled it seven time before we got everything right. Customer had traded a Jeep Wrangler for it. The engine block was cracked as well. And steering cylinder poured oil as well. Local international dealer ship informed us to knock a hole thru the screen as that's what they did. In the end the customer payed more for that trackor in parts and labor then he could have bought a good used tractor

Been here many times myself. If the suction screen is stopped up with fiberish material, start with the PTO clutches and then the turning brakes as they share the same paper like friction material. If the hydro filters are loaded with a fine sparkly material its generally the powershift clutches. Kinda miss wrenching on these tractors!!

1982 Case 2390, in Australia, cost new $84,000 Aud. I drove it and at about 5000 hours I lost function in the 3 speed power shift. The 4 gears worked. The repair was $20,000. My boss was livid. But he didn't blame me. Everything was fine one minute ,the next there was a pause before the power shift engaged then she wouldn't engage and just stayed in straight 2nd. I've seen other power shifts fail. Massey 4880, John Deere 4840 and Case 9350. Very expensive. I own an International 4586. No power shift, 5 by 2 pressurised Spicer box. Last forever.

Warren this same thing happened to me on a ford 555 backhoe all brake lining was in the bottom of main final drive case. The problem was that some mental giant put the wrong oil in that wasn’t compounded for wet clutch/brake service that’s what delaminates the friction material bonding agent .

  • @thetolleyranch1909

So you can indeed inspect the suction screen without splitting the tractor. You need to drop the oil, remove the rear pto housing, and remove the RH shift cover. It’s not ideal but it can be inspected and then the rear end flushed out without splitting the tractor. In most cases the suction screen should plug up first if it’s the PTO clutch or the rear wheel brake linings that shred. If it’s the C1 through 4 that dies that material is small enough to make it through the screen to the charge pump filters. If your finding medium to large flakes of a Blake composite material in your charge pump filters then the suction screen is shot, or in some cases guys poke holes in it. And you would need to split in order to replace.

Are the brakes held on by springs and released by hydraulic pressure? That filter screen might seem like a poor design but maybe they realized that if the screen plugs, the tractor has to be split to repair it anyway? Of course it's always the most difficult parts to get at that fail.

Theres a love and hate on these ji cases.. Just brought a case 1270. 2nd powershift was slipping on a hill climb and 3rd powershift slipped but not as bad as 2nd powrshift. There was hytran fluid leaking, pto is on and there's no switch to turn it off... It's at a shop for repairs on the Powershift. Lessons learned. Not every big 50yr old tractor is gonna run perfect with no issues. These case 70 series to 90 series have powershift problems, Depends how hard they beat the crap out of it, and there the third owners and So on.... If you want the cases on the fields with no issues.. Always come up with another 10grand to repair the Powershift and transmission. On the bright side. Once the Powershift and the transmission is fixed. It will run for a long time until it needs repairs. again.

Warren, was it just a combination of wear from all those clutches over the years that produced all that junk in the filters? I expected to see something more tore up than what you found. Also what are the total labor hours in a job like this?

The computer is just a tool. The problem started when design was controled by accountants, not engineers.

Have you actually tried to run a similar Case long term? They were NOT reliable.

Huw Williams, I’m not a case fan but our niegbor has a 2590 and a 4690 and the 2590 other than the A/C it’s been perfect and the 4690 has had a head gasket and that’s it. They have had them since new and have been very reliable!
