I love the way Warren takes the time to explain stuff, most don't do that. That said, its way above my level so a lot goes over my head but I certainly pick more and more as I go. I've subscribed to many channels but keep coming back to this one as it's the most authentic I've found. A hard working guy sharing his knowledge without out the fandom. Thanks Warren.

In 1976 I was less than 6 months out of an automotive and diesel repair trade school working for a logging company when I worked on my first Gearmatic 19, on a 74 model 50S Cat 518. They are notorious for rust in the clutch brake compartment. After 3 attempts at cleaning it up and freeing the components I had it working, but not perfectly as the operator required. The boss call the Caterpillar dealer to come out. I was there to watch and learn. I learned their top mechanic had never had one apart yet. Caterpillar's solution was to replace everything from the clutch/brake drum to the master cylinder. It was expensive but it worked. I have never been able to stop the rust issues in the Gearmatics. My only guess is the heat they create cause condensation on all the bare metal. Use lots of never-seize.

I’ve done nothing but learn from you warren, but every once in a blue moon I see you do it the hard way and those are the only times I comment. I’m from Maine and I’m old school and I’ve worked on a lot of friction cranes and we still have cable skidders. We just call that a hydraulic actuator and we “rebuild” aka take em off and clean em out and toss new o rings on em all the time. Every friction drive on any function on all the old link belt crane is actuated the exact same way. You got it figured out right on the function

Fixing anything is not as bad if you have your basics down. As a heavy equipment mechanic I break down the machine in systems. Hydraulics, cooling and electrical work on the same basics. For every electrical component there is the same in hydraulic. It’s not as bad if you step back and work the basics as long as you can before you have to apply specifics.

Back 10 or 15 years ago my grandfather had a guy from Pakistan try to buy our 1949 cable blade d7. It needed a steering clutch at the time. Apparently that's another area of the world that loves those antique machines.

having worked in Guyana for 12 years from mid 90's on, I can tell you one thing, they DON'T have laptops to bring in the forest and they sure can't understand why you would need a laptop to fix a heavy equipment or why there's a computer on one. They can fix about anything mechanical though and fab one up in no time. Really good that way those Guyanese folks. And CAT repair parts in Guyana is crazy money considering the daily 3rd world salary they get. Land is pretty flat where these are used in the jungle too so the winch option is just because they know how it works and have spares they can rig up from old ones..

The old "Problematic Winch"... used one for years on a 1972 Tree Farmer. The narrow bands are used to energize the wide bands. The spring loaded band wraps on the drum for braking and slips on the drum while winching the mainline in. The spring is only compressed during freespool. Rust in the housing is the big problem amplified by the brake fluid leaks. I switched mine over to DOT 5 brake fluid.

Yea I worked both kinds and I like the winch skidder if you can't go drop the drag drive ahead then winch in , grapple is lazy man back up to the logs the feller buncher piled up and take off if drag is to big you gotta work at it , the last timber jack was both grapple and winch I was able to get some work done I also turned the front tire backwards for traction backing up the hill to the drag so it was all good

That unit under the panel to the right of the seat is the air over hydraulic control for engaging the clutch. Pulling the control level back engages the clutch. The farther you pull it the more pressure is applied. Pushing the control level forward releases the brake in degrees until full release is reached at the end of the forward stroke which is the detent position. I doubt if there is anything wrong in the winch itself. If the clutch and brake linings are not broken in pieces or delaminated from the shoes and bands, they will work. The air over hydraulic unit is usually the problem. The inside of the air cylinder will get rusty or the seal on the ram wear out. At the least that unit needs to be bled. There are at least three bleeders on it. Use brake fluid. Keep the reservoir full.

Warren, I have to make a protest on behalf of elderly machinery: To whit, that any DRY mechanical object cannot be called NASTY, in that true nastiness is caused by great wodges of half dried grease modified by sitting rainwater, that is, if you cannot stand a spanner up in it, or touch it anywhere without getting covered in semi emulsified clart, said object is not NASTY, just old and neglected like most of us......
