I have the Akaso V50X and am very happy with it. I found a firmware bug with the camera and nearly returned it to Amazon but contacted Akaso who responded within a few hours on email with a fix that worked. Ie download a new version of the firmware. The camera cost about £80 on Amazon comes with everything you could ever want in the way of hardware. The wrist remote is great on an ebike. The mounts are well made and sturdy, the 4K is smooth as is the image stabilisation and gyro mode. I have no links to Akaso I’m just a user but if I had to buy a camera again I’d have no hesitation in going for the V50X especially as it’s about $100ish on Amazon. Customer service was excellent and much better than I expected. I recently took some slow motion 4K shots and they worked out really well of a fast moving steam train. ps I’m a photographer so have a good eye for image quality!
Totally agree. Not a fair comparison, given the fact that the Pro is 4k/60fps. To be fair, I guess it hadn't been released at the time of production, as the GP8 is out now, and she mentioned the vague upcoming, unnamed model.
@@canadianroot False. The V50 PRO SE is 4K/60 and was released on September 24th 2019. The V50 PRO is 4K/30 and was released on October 24th 2018. That's why she didn't use the V50 PRO, but also now she should update her review, cause this is clearly biased towards the GoPro.
I have the Akaso V50 Pro. It's a step up from the one she reviewed here. It performs much better. Think I paid $109 for it on a sale. It's nice and gets the job done. I don't have too many complaints about it. But as an owner of it, my advice to someone would probably be to just keep saving and get the Gopro Hero 7 Black. Yes, it's more expensive but this isn't life-changing money we're talking about. It'll be a few hundred bucks more. Given you'll probably have the camera for quite some time, you simply can't beat that picture and better yet stabilization. Another perk is that with the stabilization gorpo has now, the need for gimbals (cheap ones are at least $100) is no longer a thing.
While I appreciate the work that went into this I do believe the video stabilization test was not done properly. The yi+ was on a flimsy metal rod that was also held higher up than the other two. It's definitely going to shake more than the other two in that sort of situation....

Hi! The stabilisation test was not made properly! Gopro and the cheap one were at the bottom where there's little vibrations, while the Yi 4k+ was on a stick where shaking was way more! I'm not taking any sides because I own both gopro and Yi 4k+, but I know that 4k+ has way better EIS than you showed in this video!
An action camera is on my checklist of things to buy, and since I do a lot of MTB stabilization and image quality are my two main needs. This video helped me a *lot* to make my mind on the one I need to buy in the end, this is one of the most extensive, informative and fun review I've seen on the matter, if not the best, thank you very much for that 😁👍
Great comparison. I have a YI 4K+ since it was released (to replace my Hero 4 Silver) and also have a Hero 7 Black since it was released. The YI is surprasingly good and I even like it's 4K 60fps video more than the H7. Colors are not the same and have to be tweaked and EIS on the YI is not comparable with the H7 Hypersmooth but I use them both on a Feiyu Tech G6 gimbal so I dont care about EIS. For its price the YI is amazing and has better sound. Battery lasts longer and never freezes like H6 and H7. With its price drop, the DJI Osmo Action is a better choice than the YI in the middle between the YI and the H7. Let's see what the Hero 8 brings.
the biggest turnoff from the yi for me was the durability...I mainly will be using it to record indoor sports and know it will ake a tumbling here and there...I dnt need all the extra features from the pro (though image stabilization on the pro makes me want to shoot a film lol) but the durability on the pro is whats appealing; especially since I dnt need the case.
This video was pretty biased have to be honest Why the most expensive GoPro? I use yi but would've liked to see the GoPro that is closer in price this is miss leading that it's not worth the money when it has more features them described how does the $199 GoPro compare to the $199 Yi would've been a more honest comparison for those wanting to get into this space

I'm using a GoPro Hero 3+ Silver as my main action cam, not the latest model but I got it for free from a friend so I can't complain. There are some actions cams available on Amazon that are clones of the Akaso made in the same factory with the same chipset, but half the price or less -- I bought a DBPower EX7000 Pro for $20 and it performs almost identically to the $70 Akaso EK7000, with the same chipset and Sony image sensor. That budget tier of cameras perform similarly to a GoPro Hero 3, so it would be more fair to compare them with that rather than the newest model.
While I own the Yi 4K and a GoPro 6 Black, at the end of the day I think it's safe to assume that one would be buying an action camera mainly for video/image quality and all other things would be secondary. Letting this logic guide me, I would safely state that the GoPro 7 for this particular test would be the clear winner.

I bought an Akaso and ended up sending it back, it was junk. They also offer you free attachments for giving positive feedback, which explains the positive reviews. I bough a used GoPro and it works great. The GoPro build quality is great.
I have the Yi 4K+ It has been good but audio isn’t very good. When volume is set to low, it’s acceptable but external mic options are very limited. Oddly mine did not come with the mic cable that yours did. Maybe that’s a newer item to address the audio issues. I’ve had a few hiccups with the phone software and the initial set up but it’s served me well so far. Great review!
Nice reviews. I looked at the knockoffs like Akaso awhile back and even had one in my cart ( but I hesitated). I found the selection of the cheapo models confusing and it was hard to pick out the best based on specifications. In some cases I didn’t know how important a give specification was. The GoPro 7 was reviewed here but they’re selling the 8 black now which claims to have significantly better stabilization. The 7 has dropped maybe $70 to $330 USD but may be even cheaper by “Black Friday”. When the choice between quality v cost becomes too painful I just say no to the whole enterprise as it’s no longer fun.
Hi Lexy, extremely lively presentation, though somewhat unjust comparison. Comparing GoPro 7 with Yi 4 k+ is okay. But comparing Akaso lower model with these (Akaso V50X maybe?) - Not okay! You could have chosen Akaso V50 Elite to compare, which is the only 4K 60 FPS model.
The YI 4k+ also has a universal screw mount on the bottom which is very convenient. BUT, the stabilization is terrible (just like you showed in your video). I had a YI action camera for about a year and it just died on me. It did, however, take great photos. I'm using a DJI OSMO action camera now and it's my new favorite.
I found three second hand gopro 7 blacks for $250 - $300 one had never been used, it kinda hard to spend $200 on a knockoff when you can find a gopro 7 black for $50 - $ 100 more.

The Yi 4k+ is very old(2017 launch), it was meant to compete with hero 5 not hero 7 ... It's kinda due for upgrade in terms of sensor, lens and the processor. Xiaomi get to work my man.
Just REMEMBER the Akaso is a super budget option. The one she reviewed is a $70 to $75 action cam. It’s the Akaso Ek7000 Pro. So it’s actually not a bad option for that kind of money.
Interestingly thorough and highly entertaining - but no surprises. With respect, I think the rich-man/poor-man format is a bit like scowling at puppies. Naturally, anyone with the money will spend £400 on the Yay, I'm So Wealthy Cam. After all, what's a few hundred quid when people willingly blow £1,500 on this year's latest iPhone? Hmm. Marie Antoinette was right: "Stop being so poor, Elli! If you can't afford that £1 loaf of bread, buy this £35 cake instead!" Zut alors. I'd love to be able to pay out 400 dollars for an action camera (whatever a 'dollar' is...). Or £7,300 for a semi-pro model. Or £658,000 for a one-off aerospace-grade unit suitable for mounting on that rover I'll be sending to explore Enceladus. We all know that it's more fun to climb a mountain by relaxing in the back of a chauffeur-driven limo, sipping an iced drink, than by pedalling along behind it on a clunky ol' bike. But a lot of people (like me) will be working on a tiny budget. As a genuine pleb sans cash I know I can't afford anything nice. If I can scrape together no more than, say, £100 [about $130], I adjust my expectations accordingly. If the camera's image stabilisation is rubbish, well, I'll just have to switch it on, hat-mount it and think smooth thoughts. (Hard-mounting a camera on a bike's handlebars is an extreme, unforgiving test. I wouldn't expect a cheapo cam to do well.) Battery life is a cash minefield. The GoPros eat batteries, and spares ain't cheap. Fine if money's no object, but turning on all the cool extra features just drains the battery even faster. The (nasty) simple cameras tend to run longer. Of course, they're producing inferior footage, but that's just a matter of lowering your expectations and filming suitable subjects. At least the batteries are affordable... And nobody, anywhere, needs a touch-screen. Note: 'needs' is not the same as 'wants'. So... A review of 3 low- or mid-spec cameras might have been more helpful. Is the Akaso really the king of the budget cameras? I'm pretty sure I've seen better results from equally cheap ones. Comparing a poor cheap cam with one of the best of the expensive ones is entertaining but not too revealing. Please be assured that I'm NOT criticising you or any part of your video! As I said before, your video's highly entertaining - which is the whole point of UA-cam. You're bright, engaging, and obviously love what you're doing - and you do it very well. I just can't afford to eat cake. ;-)
Thanks for this information. I have a Gopro Hero 7 white that i use as a sort of vlogging camera as addition to my Panasonic camcorder. The Gopro is a good camera for the video's that i make. And the sound is ok because i'm never far from the camera when i talk to the camera. Looking at the different camera's in your test, i think i will stay with Gopro and even buy the new model now.
After watching this I am leaning more towards a refurb gopro hero 5 black. It has a lot of the features of the 7 she covered, and can pick one up for just over $100. Now I have to decide if I really have a use for one.
The AKASO image stabilization was about the same as the Yi. Not as drastically different as she made it sound. Of course, this is CNET so this is a sponsored “review”.
Simples you buy an SJ 4000 or similar for around £50 or you go to your local super market and buy an action cam for around £50 pounds or less some with 4K ability and very good night vision. I have two the footage is incredibly good, the apps are good as well and they are wifi or Bluetooth. Oh and make sure it uses MOV H264 or you will have been ripped off.
...For most people, it's about bang for the buck and depends a lot on how much they are going to use the device. GoPro is the obvious choice for companies that dont care.
I would look for refurbished GoPro. I saw a version 5 for $99. That the version image stabilization started. I am getting more into video now so its a very compact and image quality is far superior to my phone's.
Keep in mind those "colors" you're seeing on the GoPro aren't representative of actual real-world color. It's tweaked in the same way that TVs are when they're put on display (biasing vibrancy over accuracy for "appeal"). The Yi 4k+ isn't nearly as biased (though there is a similar setting should you desire it), and can be further refined for the truest image reproduction available in an action cam. Note: Post-processimg will be required.
Absolutely! The flat profiles give you the most scope for tweaking in post, although I think many (if not most) people will just shoot on the defaults :)

FYI: the front display and red light will tell you if the GoPro is 'on'! Not good reviewing. However, like your usage of technical terms like 'crunchy'.
Might be not worth it to some, but worth it to others. In this case, the stabilization and water-proofing make the top of the line far more worth it for me.
You can always get the same hardware for cheaper price, but the reason why GoPro is priced high is because of its software enhancements. They spent a lot of time and money on getting the colors right, image stabilization right and the overall user experience better.
bought the hero7 for my dad for xmas last year, and not really worth the hype. The mobile app and desktop programs are straight garbage. It overheats like crazy too
Question... I have the Yi 4K + and it is certainly respectable image quality both for stills and video... even under water. But I found the screen was virtually useless on a sunny day at the beach for example. You cannot even see what you are shooting and that's with the screen turned way up to max. Did you have this issue?
This just popped up for me eventhough it says from August. Anyway, why not test in 2.7 K or even 1080? Many people can't do 4k all the way because of the long, long or not at all rendering!

Maybe for you but for everyone else around the world the difference might be as much as half month salary
I think the stabilization would be the sticking point for me. An action cam with shaky footage is pretty less than ideal.

Zut alors. I'd love to be able to pay out 400 dollars for an action camera (whatever a 'dollar' is...). Or £7,300 for a semi-pro model. Or £658,000 for a one-off aerospace-grade unit suitable for mounting on that rover I'll be sending to explore Enceladus.
We all know that it's more fun to climb a mountain by relaxing in the back of a chauffeur-driven limo, sipping an iced drink, than by pedalling along behind it on a clunky ol' bike.
But a lot of people (like me) will be working on a tiny budget. As a genuine pleb sans cash I know I can't afford anything nice. If I can scrape together no more than, say, £100 [about $130], I adjust my expectations accordingly.
If the camera's image stabilisation is rubbish, well, I'll just have to switch it on, hat-mount it and think smooth thoughts. (Hard-mounting a camera on a bike's handlebars is an extreme, unforgiving test. I wouldn't expect a cheapo cam to do well.)
Battery life is a cash minefield. The GoPros eat batteries, and spares ain't cheap. Fine if money's no object, but turning on all the cool extra features just drains the battery even faster. The (nasty) simple cameras tend to run longer. Of course, they're producing inferior footage, but that's just a matter of lowering your expectations and filming suitable subjects. At least the batteries are affordable...
And nobody, anywhere, needs a touch-screen. Note: 'needs' is not the same as 'wants'.
So... A review of 3 low- or mid-spec cameras might have been more helpful. Is the Akaso really the king of the budget cameras? I'm pretty sure I've seen better results from equally cheap ones. Comparing a poor cheap cam with one of the best of the expensive ones is entertaining but not too revealing.
Please be assured that I'm NOT criticising you or any part of your video! As I said before, your video's highly entertaining - which is the whole point of UA-cam. You're bright, engaging, and obviously love what you're doing - and you do it very well.

I have a Gopro Hero 7 white that i use as a sort of vlogging camera as addition to my Panasonic camcorder.
The Gopro is a good camera for the video's that i make. And the sound is ok because i'm never far from the camera when i talk to the camera.
Looking at the different camera's in your test, i think i will stay with Gopro and even buy the new model now.
After watching this I am leaning more towards a refurb gopro hero 5 black. It has a lot of the features of the 7 she covered, and can pick one up for just over $100. Now I have to decide if I really have a use for one.

The AKASO image stabilization was about the same as the Yi. Not as drastically different as she made it sound. Of course, this is CNET so this is a sponsored “review”.
Simples you buy an SJ 4000 or similar for around £50 or you go to your local super market and buy an action cam for around £50 pounds or less some with 4K ability and very good night vision.
I have two the footage is incredibly good, the apps are good as well and they are wifi or Bluetooth.
Oh and make sure it uses MOV H264 or you will have been ripped off.

...For most people, it's about bang for the buck and depends a lot on how much they are going to use the device. GoPro is the obvious choice for companies that dont care.
I would look for refurbished GoPro. I saw a version 5 for $99. That the version image stabilization started. I am getting more into video now so its a very compact and image quality is far superior to my phone's.
How much was the waterproof case though? Not a good price comparison ..
Keep in mind those "colors" you're seeing on the GoPro aren't representative of actual real-world color. It's tweaked in the same way that TVs are when they're put on display (biasing vibrancy over accuracy for "appeal"). The Yi 4k+ isn't nearly as biased (though there is a similar setting should you desire it), and can be further refined for the truest image reproduction available in an action cam. Note: Post-processimg will be required.
Absolutely! The flat profiles give you the most scope for tweaking in post, although I think many (if not most) people will just shoot on the defaults :)

Thank you! So many of the budget action cams on Amazon are full of fake/paid reviews right now, so it's become difficult to pick a good product (I've returned two). After watching your video, I'm done messing around--time to toss down the money for the GoPro!

The GoPro seems oversaturated a lot of the time. If I want to saturate I can do that in post, but removing it usually looks worse

Might be not worth it to some, but worth it to others. In this case, the stabilization and water-proofing make the top of the line far more worth it for me.

not well matched comparison as Yi 4K+ should be compared to the similarly prices V50 series Akaso, the EK7000 is way cheaper.
What about the Akaso V50x with super smooth image stabilization for under 100 dollars?
Serious problem with the Yi 4k+ It's completely unavailable - can't be found at any online shop - even the Yi website - sold out.

You can always get the same hardware for cheaper price, but the reason why GoPro is priced high is because of its software enhancements. They spent a lot of time and money on getting the colors right, image stabilization right and the overall user experience better.

bought the hero7 for my dad for xmas last year, and not really worth the hype. The mobile app and desktop programs are straight garbage. It overheats like crazy too

DJI has an Action cam that is probably the most comparable to the gopro and slightly cheaper. But people like their super view....

Question... I have the Yi 4K + and it is certainly respectable image quality both for stills and video... even under water. But I found the screen was virtually useless on a sunny day at the beach for example. You cannot even see what you are shooting and that's with the screen turned way up to max. Did you have this issue?

This just popped up for me eventhough it says from August. Anyway, why not test in 2.7 K or even 1080? Many people can't do 4k all the way because of the long, long or not at all rendering!
