I bought the gray market version of this lens for a D7100 but also use it on my D600 (the D600 switches to crop mode, yes, APC but better resolution) and I have been very happy with it. No, it is not 70-200 quality, but also it is 1/7th to 1/10th the price, and if you practice your shots you can get very sharp shots with it. I also use it for video, even at 300mm, for wildlife. Highly recommended for amateur/enthusiast/semi-pros.
@@RamSaun Yes, it is; with a crop camera (like the 5600) you will be at a range of 105 to 450, and it is sharp. I have a pretty good shot of a hummingbird with it. Also it is very light, easy to carry; I now also have the 200-500, great, also very heavy to carry.
I have the same setup a d5500 and this lens. It's great for a walk around setup for birds and wildlife. Light weight and fast quiet focus are really a plus. Thanks for review.
I love this lens because of the performance not the quality. It is unbelievably fast, accurate, sharp, within its limitations. Nothing else for this price even comes close. I'm using it on my D3400. If I wanted to pay for a metal mount and all of the extras I would have paid out the big bucks for it. I'll take it up against a $2000 dollar telephoto any day of the week and twice on Sunday. It has served well for a year; the plan has always been to go with a 70-200mm f/2.8 and I just acquired a new Tamron G2 model of that size, so I would keep the 70-300mm as a back-up, and in the instances of needing slightly longer focal length than the Tamron. Images over the past year with the Nikon have been very good; it is a good lens, though I agree, the plastic construction and lack of seals may prove a limitation over time in the field.
Great review. I purchased this lens about a month ago with a D7500 and I've been very happy the results. Fantastic image quality and it's easy to bring along due to its light weight.
Hello I have a question about this lens, when I zoom around when it reaches 200 mm it sounds through the lens one click as if it finds something. I'm not sure it was from the beginning, but I think not. However, there is no malfunction the lens is fully functional. Has anyone noticed it? Also note that the lens has not fallen under me because I look after him too much.
i am looking at getting this lens for my D5500 (to replace my 55-200mmVR) and will be used mostly for bird photography... how is it at the long end? for now this is what i can only afford... and i am failry new to this hobby.
I have exactly this lens, and sometimes it disapoints me. It has problems with focusing, so usually I must switch into manual focus. Even then I have no guarantee It wil create sharp image with VR. The second thing, it's dark with this F4,5 and 58mm wide front.
How do you perfectly manual focus to infinity for astrophotography ? I'm unable to hit the sweet spot because stars are not bright enough to manually focus correctly since the focus ring keeps rotating
I have a Nikon D3400 with the latest firmware but there is no option to switch vr on and off in the menu. Is this because I haven't attached a vr lens to it yet? Will the option appear once I do? I'm asking because I have just ordered this lens and I am hoping that vr will not be on 100% of the time. Many thanks 😊👍🏾
Just update your camera firmware if you haven't. I have an AF-P 18-55 DX on my D7100, and it works flawlessly. I know it's not a 70-300, but it's AF-P. Only the D7100 onwards can support AF-P lens.
You mention a "huge difference in comparrison to old AF-S lenses". After upgrading from a D3100 body, I use my old AF-S 70-300 VR and really struggle with focussing on my D5500. Often the camera will refuse to take the shot at all. Is the 70-300 AF-P going to be my answer? As a side note, the AF-S still focusses well on the D3100 body. Thanks for the video. :-)
Thanks for the valuable information :) M currently using d3300 n planning to buy a telephoto lens , I checked af-p 70-300 and af-s 55-300 , can u please suggest which would be better option ?
I have this camera/lens combo; I was hoping for more reach. Do you know if the Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC HLD would provide better reach than cropping the Nikon 70-300mm lens?
@@TheHybridShooter Yes, I know it has more reach, but I've read the Tamron is less sharp and so cropping the 300mm Nikon in the end may actually give a better result than the 400mm; didn't know if you've ever tried that Tamron lens
Why did you enter the Nikon system even though you already have Panasonic and Sony cameras? Just curious to know, what made you choose exactly these three brands and how do they complement each other?
I have had Nikon long before Panasonic and Sony and I still keep it because there are some great cheap lenses like 40mm F2.8 Macro that not available for Sony which is my primary camera and Panasonic G85 is my secondary camera, because I need two cameras for production purposes, but I will upgrade to G9 in January.
Wow! That was a fast reply. Thanks for the info. Do you think it's still worth to get the G80 or should I wait for the G90? Looking forward to watch your G9 videos. I only expect the best quality from you.
I unfortunately don't know anything about what, when or even if G90 / G95 will be, so I can't answers that, you have to sacrifice some futures with every camera on the market, for some shooters G85 could still be a very good compromise.
Here's a thought piece for you, Adrian: ALL of the manufacturers' APS-C systems have a major problem -- the rather egregious lack of a sufficient range of truly up-to-date native lenses of high image quality (by contemporary, competitive standards), and designed to suitable scale factors and focal lengths for, say, a Sony-sized mirrorless body or a sub-17 ounce DSLR. Fuji, arguably, might get a pass there (apart from a notable gap or two); but X-trans is a flawed solution [in search of a problem] for landscape shooters like me; and Fuji has no FF or "dual format use" upgrade path out of APS-C, except for its limited range, price-y [and not really] "medium format" offerings. Therefore, like our host here, I had no choice for rounding out my compact/EDC, APS-C kit (**complementing** FF Sony + Nikon) but to amalgamate 3 manufacturer's systems (!) to get the **primes-centric IQ** I want in a small form factor, at a minimum practical weight -- therefore, Canon M5 (7-ounces: 11-22mm IS STM; circa 3+ ounces: 22mm/f.2.0; and 4.4 ounces: 28mm/3.5 IS STM macro -- indispensable, under-appreciated, and uniquely tiny) w/ compact EF STM & IS USM primes supplementation... Sony A5000/LCDVF (preferred for better low ISO IQ/rendering and left eye shooting compatibility w/ adapted lenses in manual focus to the A6000) -- for "dual use" of lenses w/ Sony A7-series FF... and, finally, Nikon D3400 for its generally un-noticed tweaks to basic IQ & rendering to near state-of-the-art for APS-C and compatibility with the unique (and unequalled at anywhere near its 14.7 ounce carry weight) AF-P(E) 70-300mm DX zoom on test here. Prime lenses + two **uniquely** featherweight & capable zooms for super wide and long telephoto FL's: No other way to get there, Adrian, without compromising BOTH image quality and go-anywhere lens kit tote-ability simultaneously. All my carry accessory options are highly modular, efficient, & flexible, so it's a "horses for courses" thing for me. Very modular and flexible, by design. No slow, IQ-compromised "walkaround" zooms for me either, thanks; unless fairly brutal environmental conditions preclude practical lens changes. With two small bodies and the right clip/holster system, you can always be ready to shoot, with the effort of a little forethought. 4K video is an entirely separate matter, and [to editorialize a moment] I have no sympathy for fanboy-gearhead type arguments for "gotta have it" 4K that effectively denigrate the primacy and value of stills photography... showing off a kind of ignorant incomprehension or just plain disdain for 160+ years worth of still relevant, enduring art. Though, of course, 4K or plain vanilla Canon 1080P video are fine in their own place(s). For me personally, Canon Dual Pixel AF in conjunction with Canon's STM type lenses PRESENTLY best suits my main real world video & computer power/file storage capacity requirements in a Vlogging scale and offers an easy-to-use, no specialized expertise needed, minimally hunting AF for video w/ pretty high IQ, normal compact primes... which I don't believe a practical Sony video rig could match on that score. Anyway, I hope a few of the ideas here from my own experience might give you some additional insight, Adrian, in answer to your courteous and well posed question. I'm a retired pro, BTW; so no kids, cats, pranks, etc., as subjects... and I've been 'around the block' enough times to know that no one but a relative generally wants to see sports and "action" photos these days not shot by pro specialists with real pro rigs unless it's Go Pro or drone footage... which might further explain my priorities these days.

Dear friend.. Thanks for your great video. ▪ Question 🙋🏻♂️. I'm a Birdwatcher.. So because of pandemia and Budget. I bought a NIKON D5,000.. (old one but still works) Do you recommend this lens for my Old Nikon 📸..? Appreciate it.. 😇
I sincerely hope you can get better border-to-border results from your sample of that lens than I've seen so far online, especially here on UA-cam, T.H.S. I shoot Canon + Sony mirrorless and a lightweight Nikon D3400 in the APS-C format, as required, and am currently holding onto both the excellent 7-ounce EF-M 11-22mm for Canon mirrorless and the somewhat less capable EF-S 10-18mm, mainly to get a 15mm equivalent FL on Sony via a minor mod and a Sigma MC-11 adapter at 8 ounces lens carry weight. I'd prefer to have that 10mm+ FL in Nikon mount, since I have no interest in Canon DSLRs; but the images that I've seen so far from that 10-20mm Nikkor place it well behind the Canon 10-18mm in performance, especially looking toward the borders of the frame. I'd say, provisionally, that the comparative results Chris at The Camera Store got are -- disappointing to me -- all too typical of what I've seen elsewhere. That poor performance outside the center of the frame and the stopping down required would make the Nikkor unsuitable for my own needs, even though I have the Irix 15mm for my FF bodies. The Nikkor may be decent in the center of the frame, but still... Tentatively, I think the 'kit' AF-P 18-55mm is pretty much O.K. and worth keeping for video, etc. -- the only std. kit lens I could personally endorse for some uses since the 6.9 ounce 28-80mm AF asph. element Nikkor from the end of the film era, circa 2003. [I just prefer doing what it takes to use primes and know that a modern 28mm and 85mm primes tandem (in FF here, of course) -- given enough megapixels to work with for some cropping -- can pretty much get it done better in most circumstances than can midrange zooms, if border to border IQ + some useful extra lens speed is the priority.] Canon, at least, can fix one up with super affordable compact primes (very commodity-like in pricing 'used') to obviate most requirements for a midrange-y kit zoom in APS-C, given the ready availability of a cheap EF-S 10-18mm. Kind of odd that Nikon would drop the ball on getting truly competitive at super wide FL's. Well, good luck! I'll be curious to see your results...
Sony A6000 / A6300 is actually the best IMO at the moment for photography and filmmaking. Out those two Nikon is better for photography and Canon for video.
The Hybrid Shooter Using the nikon for video recording I'm trying to see if there's a way where I can zoom in-and-out Near the screen n controls rather than my hands on the actual lens
The lens works fine except that you won't be able to turn off VR, if that's an issue for you (for example if you plan to do long exposures on a tripod with it)
To my knowledge you'll need to update your firmware in order to get it working at all, but no firmware update gives you the VR menu setting. If you're ok with sacrificing some of the AF speed, the Tamron 70-300 is also a decent lens, and is fully compatible.
Just dropped mine :( I forgot that it wasn't screwed onto my D7500 properly, picked up the camera, and plop it fell. Front UV filter cracked, had to clean all the glass shards off the front element, now there's some unexplained glass pieces inside the lens, zoom action isnt 100% smooth anymore... BUT IT STILL WORKS! somehow. I can't discern a difference in the IQ it gives me. And the VR still locks down the image in the viewfinder like it used to.
Ooooo I've a 50mm lens 1.8 and just I can use it in manual mode for the focus do you think that with the software update works the automatic focus in this lens ?
Surprisingly found many videos which says Tamron is out performing the Nikkor version in this lens segment.. especially the VC in Tamron over VR in Nikkor is much superior.. know what? Nikkor reduced its price and Tamron increased its price.. as of today both Nikkor and Tamron cost is same.!!!!
Am I the only one who thinks this lens is "crap"? I mean, I have certainly taken good shots (keepers) but the huge majority of photos taken with this lens are throwaways. The chromematic aberrations are HUGE and sometimes can't even be fixed in LR. Also, the image quality is horrible at 300mm, so soft that it looks out of focus when zoomed at 1x. BTW, this is with VR on (in camera)

I've a D3300, and autocus is not working for this lens. My firmware version is C1.02 and L2.009. Could you guide, please ?
Having the same problem on a d3200
Upgraded the 55-200 version to a 70-300 fx and am I sorry.
I see no advantage in optical quality and the Dx is much lighter.
Should maybe have gone for the f4 70-200 fx?
I have never used that lens, so I unfortunately can't help you with that.
It was just a comment by me reaffirming the quality of the Dx telephoto lenses
Dear friend.. Thanks for your great video.
▪ Question 🙋🏻♂️. I'm a Birdwatcher.. So because of pandemia and Budget. I bought a NIKON D5,000.. (old one but still works) Do you recommend this lens for my Old Nikon 📸..? Appreciate it.. 😇
Had u bought any lens
@@amitkrupal1234 Hi... yes the 55-300 AF-S.. 😇 ✌🏼
What’s are the uses of these lens ?
Hi guys I bought a Nikon d7100. Is the Nikon 70-300 mm VR f/4.5-6.3 DX ED compatible with my camera. I thought so but just to be sure! Thanks.
What kind of software do you use to edit video?
Hi, question: would you recommend this lens for taking landscapes?
If you need that kind of zoom range, it is a good choice within price category.
@@TheHybridShooter would it be good on wildlife?
Does this lens support D3500?
yes
How many times is this zoomed in (for example: 25x optical zoom) for 70-300mm
300/70=4.28 so 4.28x zoom.
Does this lens work well on the 3500?
yes
I have nikon d3300. It will work with that?🤔
Yes.
good morning, does this lens work well with the D800? Warm regards from Peru
No, it is APS-C lens, you would get heavy vignetting.
The Hybrid Shooter Thank you so much 🤜🤛
Is this compatible to d5300 sir?
What portrait lens is the best for nikon d3300 please give me idea
Is this lens compatible with Nikon d5200 dslr
Which lens is qualitatively better to use on D3300 ? 70-300mm VR or 50mm 1.4G?
Those are completely different lenses, 50mm F1.4 is much better optically, since it is a prime lens.
@@TheHybridShooter And what about the depth and bokeh effect ?
Hi, the Rear Nikon F Mount Lens is It a Fake or a reel, also did you recommand reel or fake Rear Nikon F Mount Lens? Thanks
I'm sorry, but I don't understand you question.
Your Rear Nikon F Mount Lens is It a Fake or a reel?
Nothing show in this video is fake, so probably not.
Do you have in plan, to get NIkon 10-20 AF-P?
Yes, I will probably get it in January 2018.
Cool, I also have the d5500 so it will be great to see it with that lens :D
[I just prefer doing what it takes to use primes and know that a modern 28mm and 85mm primes tandem (in FF here, of course) -- given enough megapixels to work with for some cropping -- can pretty much get it done better in most circumstances than can midrange zooms, if border to border IQ + some useful extra lens speed is the priority.]
Canon, at least, can fix one up with super affordable compact primes (very commodity-like in pricing 'used') to obviate most requirements for a midrange-y kit zoom in APS-C, given the ready availability of a cheap EF-S 10-18mm. Kind of odd that Nikon would drop the ball on getting truly competitive at super wide FL's. Well, good luck! I'll be curious to see your results...
How can I fix it it's still blurred when connected to my camera
are u sure the 105 - 450 conversion is right?
+JONATHAN KNAPP Yes, l am.
Doesnt seem right. the conversion would be accurate if it was an FX lens, But this is the DX version.
Focal range is a physical attribute, it is 70-300 focal length, which gives you same field of view as 105-450 on full frame.
Can I use this lance in Nikon d3300 frame? Plz someone help
Yes, you can.
@@TheHybridShooter thanks...thanks for good video
Thanks.. i ordered 1 today
This is an older video but would this lense fit an older *Nikon d90?*
It will fit, but it is not compatible with AF-P autofocus.
Where does it stand in comparision with AF-S 18-140 in 2022?
Completely different types of lenses. Both outdated, much like to whole Nikon DLSR system.
What do you think about the 18-140mm lens?
I have never used it.
sir which is the best for photography n videography Nikon d5600 n canon 200d please answer me i soo confused which is the best for me reply me
Sony A6000 / A6300 is actually the best IMO at the moment for photography and filmmaking. Out those two Nikon is better for photography and Canon for video.
+The Hybrid Shooter but sir how is it Nikon d5600 for videography can i purchase this camera how is it for me??
Nikon D5500 is not good for video, the autofocus is unusable, and shooting video is very difficult.
+The Hybrid Shooter but sir i am talking about Nikon d5600 not d5500 how is it Nikon d5600 for videography
Nikon D5500 and D5600 is basically the same camera.
Do you still recommend A nikon D5500 when fuji and olympus/panasonic exists? 😶
No, I do not.
Nice captures! Will this work on d3300?
Yes, it will.
Does it have only manual focus or does it have automatic one too?
Yes, it has autofocus.
Thank you😉
Anej Tolic he showed that in the video didn’t you listen?
I have d3000 will it support? If yes then will it work in all modes?
No it won't work on D3000.
Would this fit a Nikon d5200
Yes is f mount
im looking for an excellent automatic zoom lens... any suggestions?
I'm not sure what do you mean by automatic zoom lens.
The Hybrid Shooter Using the nikon for video recording I'm trying to see if there's a way where I can zoom in-and-out Near the screen n controls rather than my hands on the actual lens
Just the info I was looking for (white box and more). Thanks.
I have nikon D610 just wonder if this lens fit to my camera?
No, it is APS-C lens. D610 is full frame.
Will this DX lense works nicely on my Nikon d7200 or should I go with f4.5-5.6g vr ?
Does it have image stabilizer???...and which is better nikon 70 300 or sigma 70 300???
Yes, it does, I haven't tested Sigma 70-300 so I don't know.
nikon is better,
Will this work on my Nikon D7100 DSLR?
The lens works fine except that you won't be able to turn off VR, if that's an issue for you (for example if you plan to do long exposures on a tripod with it)
Will a firmware update fix that?
To my knowledge you'll need to update your firmware in order to get it working at all, but no firmware update gives you the VR menu setting. If you're ok with sacrificing some of the AF speed, the Tamron 70-300 is also a decent lens, and is fully compatible.
@@ineedagoodusername3164 Thanks for the suggestion and the help!
going to buy NIKON D5600 WITH 18-140MM LENSE. do I need af-p 70-300mm too..? plz reply
Depends on whether you intend to shoot telephoto.
thanks for your response.. just tell me can birding be done with af-p 70-300mm lense?
Yes, it can.
hii…this setup can use for plane spotting?
Is it compatible with Nikon D3500?
Yes, it is.
Yup
Do you still own the Nikon D5500 and Nikon D5600 and the DX 70-300
No, I have sold both many years ago.
Will this lens suits up with Nikon D3300
Does the Auto focus motor works well with D3300?
yes
Does the Auto focus motor works well with D3200?
What are you using to shoot video?
Sony A6500 + Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 + Sigma MC-11 adapter.
I'm sorry to hear that.
Thinkin I had to sell my D5500 because of debts breaks my heart... I can't wait to make an amazing lens to camera combo again !
Can tamron lens are better than nikon kit lens???

I'm afraid that I don't understand your question.
Hi can this lens fit to a d5100?
Someone can tell me if this lens works automatic focus in Nikon d3300 ?
Yes, but you need to update camera firmware.
So I need change the body camera or what ? I didn't understand you
No, you need to load new software to your D3300.
Ooooo I've a 50mm lens 1.8 and just I can use it in manual mode for the focus do you think that with the software update works the automatic focus in this lens ?
I don't know.
Don’t see a way to turn VR off in D500 menu
Surprisingly found many videos which says Tamron is out performing the Nikkor version in this lens segment.. especially the VC in Tamron over VR in Nikkor is much superior.. know what? Nikkor reduced its price and Tamron increased its price.. as of today both Nikkor and Tamron cost is same.!!!!
Mohan Sundaram so in a nutshell, which would you recommend?
Is this lens better than 18-105mm or 18-140?
Those are completely different lenses.
Hi! I find this lens bad too. Did you use Tamron 70-300 usd?
@@juri_mjatlin no, I still have this lens gathering dust because nobody wants to buy it.
I've been using the Tamron 100-400 which is great
im interesed in image performance betweent this, 55-200vr2 and 70-300 vr.
So ma I, but I don't have those lenses, so I can't do that.
How will it perform on a Nikon d300
There are some restriction www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000035705&configured=1&lang=en_GB
penso di prenderlo x la D7500...faccio bene?
Does it support in nikon D40x
Is this compactable with D3400?
yes
Is this EF mount lens or RF??
Neither, it is for Nikon.
after 3 years of intensive use the mount sanded off and the lens wiggles slightly
In this lense used for nikon d3500?
yes
