Scuba dive has changed my perspective towards animals deeply. Went from a voracious meat eater to vegetarian, went from believing that animals where just responding to instincts, to actually see that there was something beyond that. I’ve seen octopi meeting my gaze, looking straight into my eyes and reach with their tentacles out of pure curiosity. Sometimes even getting playful. I’ve seen a sea turtle asking for help to get fishing gear removed from a fin. I’ve seen moray eels getting familiar with me after visiting their hiding spot many times in a row… If we could manage to step out from our own bubble just a bit and see and listen to all those around us… We would be so much different.
@@meganglynn6568 🥹 I don’t know if I’d call it open minded though… Its not like I did anything on purpose… I just observed the world around me in awe and at some point something “clicked”. I am very grateful for it

@@gloriousbee9366 huh, I guess after a while it started to sink in… I don’t know how it happened but one day it just hit me. I guess we treat animals the way we do because we mostly see them as products, not as complex organisms, and after being in contact with them for such a long time, that perception simply changed radically.
Octopus in particular are exceptionally intelligent. Fine motor skills require high brain power, it’s why humans are so smart. Need a lot of brain power to work these hands so deftly. So imagine being able to move and do things with 8 arms. Octopus are one big wet hand. Pretty cool!
The fish was like "sup, girl. Ive seen you around you know and I thought Imma just talk to you". Took him 20k dives to muster up enough courage to go talk to you. What a hero.
I remember when I was a kid, my family took me to Aruba. When I was out swimming in the ocean, a beautiful fish about the size of a tea saucer swam up to me and booped my arm. It swam a few feet away and I went over to it to boop its fin. We then proceeded to play tag, where I would touch the fish and swim away, and then the fish would boop me and swim away. My parents were absolutely hysterical, they couldn't believe a wild creature would be so playful and social
Not when you consider this fish seems to be above average intelligence for his species... That mental aptitude comes in handy when eluding predators. Survival of the fittest.
With it's ability for recognition it's not so surprising it's survived. Although I'm also wondering if it does this with every diver thinking it's the same friend lol.

I saw on a TV program that one scientist had actually taught a fish to jump through a small hoop she would place over the water tank. There is so much we still don't know about animal intelligence. Hopefully, more and more people will soon understand that. I would love to see the day when everyone agrees to stop fishing and hunting because they have discovered how much fmore fulfilling interactions with all animals are like.
Koi fish have been bred for thousands of years by humans and they are very smart but they're also motivated by food as they are voracious eaters. They definitely will bond with you. I have koi fish but I also have sliders and cooter turtles as well as minnows and three massive plecostomus in my pond. They get along quite well as a matter of a fact my Plecos love being around the turtles to either vacuum up the mess they make with food or they suck on their shells. I notice at feeding time for the turtles my Plecos will follow them once they notice them going to the area where they're fed. Once I start feeding them the Plecos will sit behind them and wait for the food debris to get everywhere then swoop in once they see enough. Also people underestimate pigeons and how great of a pet they actually make. When I am outside of their aviary they'll fly near the door beckoning to come in especially when they see the food cup filled with seed. Two of them are wild that I've captured from my mom's house or my workplace. They figure out what is what and who is who. My kids or wife will go in the cage and they want nothing to do with them. I'll go in the cage and they'll come hang out by my feed and eat any seed in the grass.
I think its just a natural instinct for animals including us to show other members of a group around all the important places they know. It just feels natural, like inviting friends over and showing them around the place. I just wonder whats so important about all of these places.
A friend of ours had a goldfish in a little tank, he really interacted with too. Whenever he got visitors, the fish started to plash on the water with its tail and when our friend didn't react to that, he jumped out of the tank on the carpet, knowing his human friend would get up to save him and thus getting the desired attention.
Or the water parameters were so bad because of the unsuitable tank that the ammonia started burning the fish resulting in this common behavior for fish who desperately want to get out of a poisonous environment 🐟
I went on a dive excursion at Grand Turk: the dive operator introduced us to Bernie: a large grouper that would tag along with the dive crews on practically every excursion! He loved to be handled and ‘scratched’ and swam beside us the whole trip!
One of these days thanks to the internet people will realize Genesis wasn't lying. The state of death and predator/prey is unnatural, the truly natural state is for animals to have no fear of us and for us to look after them and love them. And they yearn for the day God makes all things new as much as we do, when wolf will dwell with the lamb again as before.
"This eel hates people be careful OH OH here's that turtle that always sleeps OH LOOK A COOL SHELL-" I imagine him like Dory from Finding Nemo and it's great 😂😂
My father was a deep sea diver in the Navy. When he returned home he started a diving club here in Northern Minnesota. Every time he would go into Lake Irvine, he would rap on his tank and a fish would come and swim with him every time. The fish would swim ahead and lead him, but stay near for companionship.
I've had a few amazing encounters with reef fish. People think I'm a bit nuts. So glad to know there is someone else out there that believes! Beautiful story.
While snorkeling in Hawaii we saw some very friendly fish that would stay by us. Some were very playful. If we turned over small rocks they liked that and would nudge us to turn over more rocks. It was pretty cool.
Aw, he's so proud of his reef! Lol, he's like a little tour guide, what a sweetheart ❤ Disney ought to make a movie about him! A little fish that escorts divers around his reef and introduces all his friends (sleepy turtle and timid eel included), I'd watch that, lol.
@Terri Caton Art I believe she was holding onto the coral’s bare exposed skeleton so the damage may have been minimal. Nonetheless I fully agree, divers should never touch corals if not necessary.
'Finding Sunny', about a teenage youngster from the same neighbourhood as Nemo and Dory (who do have cameo's but don't play important roles, but it's a fish movie so why not bank on that brand familiarity and also save some time on designs of the under water world). Sunny is a runaway kid, hiding in a corner of the reef where nobody knows him, but he meets this diver and of all creatures she is the one he confides in. After showing her around in his new 'neighbourhood' he eventually leads her to his home, that's filled with 'treasure' ; items from the bottom of the see that he considers beautiful. Some day, he realizes that the friendship with the diver may not last (or at least can not grow much closer) because they come from different worlds but he has learned to open up to others and share about his life. While there have been search parties out there, whom Sunny managed to ignore and escape from for the longest time, 'Finding Sunny' is truely about Sunny finding and accepting himself in order to find his place in the world. Final scene is the diver meeting Sunny possibly one last time as he leads her to a place where all his friends from his hometown have gathered to show his greatest treasure : friendship! Coming in 2026!
Fish do have personalities and forge bonds with eachother and other species. I think humans think we are the only ones capable of experience emotions and that's just not the case. Thos was so heart warming.🤗🥰
There is a deeply held anthrocentric bias for many people. I hope some day everyone is challenged and confronted by the fact that "we" are not the center of the universe, or the most evolved and adapted, etc.
Think it’s more the inter species relationship that’s amazing. Of course all animals and creatures have emotions but it’s incredible between predator and prey creatures having a relationship
Um no its more like humans only think land animals and very few highly intelligent sea creatures like whales and dolphins of being capable of forming those kind of bonds (I guess sea mammals) no one expects a fish to be like that it's like expecting a lizard or a bird randomly showing that kind of behavior towards a human without being fed
it's kinda' strange to undersand that all we emotionally complex animals are eating each other and exploiting each other while having this dualistic regard... i think it would be neat to have the universe collect the naturally more socially beneficent souls for some afterlife party.
yes i proudly house 40 leafy citizens in my bedroom...although they are less interactive than animals the way plants grow is amazing and I've named 90% of them (:
I’ve had pet fish in the past and there’s definitely a lot more than we realize going on inside their brains. One goldfish I had liked to chase my finger as I ran it along the side of his tank. He would also greet me even if I didn’t have food to give him. Fish are really cool
The exact same happened to me and my friend some 25 years ago with this one fish north of Perth, Western Australia. Multiple different dives the same little fish would proudly play tour guide of her special reef introducing us to all the diffefent characters who inhabited the neighbourhood. All with unique personalities...not all were pleased to see us, especially the Snapper, he was quite the grump! But our little tour guide was a darling fish and I'll never forget the experience, so blessed. Fish are the birds of the Sea. We need to get to know them and respect their needs and right to live.
Sonny is a bored fish and was excited to see human explore his underwater world. He is officially a tour guide for Rachel. Love the friendship. 👏🥰🐠 🦭🐋🌎
There's an old legend that once in a while, a person's soul enters an animal's body, or maybe it's a fish with a soul that she knew from a previous life. It's a rare case, but animal communicator Heidi says that a cat that remembers all of its past lives goes back to the person it was born with, happy with the memory of being loved by her or him
Anyone who has had a fish tank knows that fish recognize you, show emotion, etc. I had a saltwater tank with the absolute coolest pufferfish. He would get so excited when I got home from work and greet me at the side of the tank that was next to the door. He could see all the way across the apartment to my fridge and whenever I got into the freezer he would start freaking out with excitement, splashing the water up top, because the freezer is where I kept his food. He was awesome, he survived my move from from Los Angeles to San Diego but then I went on vacation and I had a family friend take care of him. I had full written instructions and made it clear how important he was to me, long story short she didn’t take care of him and he died. I was heartbroken.
I remember my dad used to have these beautiful lion fish in his office, but when he was away for a while, the janitor decided to refill the tank with fresh water….
Remarkably, I had a similar experience many years ago when I was a teenager. My family and I were vacationing in Barbados, and my father and I went on a local shallow water diving tour with two guides. They took us to the wreck of a small fishing boat in about 25 feet of water, and sitting in a small hole in this wreck was a porcupine fish, which is a species of puffer fish. The fish saw the guides and immediately recognized them (probably because they brought people by the wreck almost every day), and came out of the hole and swam right up to us. Incredibly, the fish let one of the guides hold it in his hands, and the guides motioned to me to pet it. Needless to say, I was mindblown as I very gently stroked my fingers along the fish's stomach. I could feel its bones and organs, and the fish was just as calm as could be; it didn't inflate or anything, like puffer fish normally do. I was like, "This isn't happening! Fish don't let you pet them!" But for whatever reason, this fish did. I'll never forget that day.
There's something amazing happening with animals. I've seen some videos showing how animals save humans, play with humans, greeting humans that have saved them. Wow, that's all i can say. There are very smart animals out there! It's adorable to see this small fish greet this lady more than once and shows her a 'gift' - beautiful!
Animals are way more intelligent than most humans think. I love animals so much. This is another amazing heartwarming story presented by the Dodo. So uplifting. Thank you ❤️
@Ben Lurie Mate you're in every thread on here with your sarcastic comments purposely getting a rise out of people like you're desperate for attention. Why?
@Ben Lurie Again, every created creature has it's own defense mechanisms. Whether they run away or spray you with ink, they ALL have intelligence to run and protect themselves from predators..
I was snorkeling in the East China Sea once and these little fish got in my face and were “talking” to me, little friendly chirps. I quit eating fish after that.
I’ve seen lots of comments about the same thing I immediately thought, the fact that this fish has survived this long, is amazing! Without being eaten or hurt or caught or anything. @@rsuriyop 30 years now. Also called kobudai in Japan, they are fished for food, live up to 40 years, and are one of the fish who can fluidly transgender. This story is quite different from the one you mention. The kobudai was ailing and the Japanese man fed him and saved his life. The bond was formed as a result. With Sonny, there was no feeding nor was there a bond due to life saving measures. The reason so many have commented and expressed joy about Sonny is this human to fish story gives hope that we can happily connect with beings as different from us as fish are but without inducement. And more than that for the connection to be about the relationship itself and that it not be based on conditions. To recognize the uniqueness in another and to cherish it is agape. The fact this is a fish and a human is the special sweetness. This seems to be the central mission and focus of Agape Sailing but they could not have imagined this would manifest with a fish.
