Bob the bandit here. Very interesting to hear expert commentary against the decisions I made in the game. I agree with the analysis and especially it was a mistake for me not to use my yop to get my 3rd settlement instead of second city. You were both right that the reason I did not buy the extra dev card after my monopoly was because I had drawn yop and road building. I figured I should try and use them but realised there were probably not enough turns left. Hard for anyone to come back after loganian’s ore monopoly but jwarrior came close. thank you Hawkeye and Treeckosaurus.
I think that YoP was your game killing mistake. It was like trading 2 rare bricks (which you don't get with any possible roll) for wheat and ore (the 2 resources you already had so much of). Only 2 uses for that YoP should have been 2 bricks or maybe 2 sheep for early dev cards.
Treeckosaurus Gaming it was to allow me to get the extra dev card (which I ended up not doing). Probably it was too generous, but I didn’t really see any other way for me to stand a remote possibility of winning. No other trade for sheep was on the table.
vrej was damned if he did, damned if he didn't on that 2nd placement. Either he gives JWarrior a monster on 8/5/10, or gives him monster wheat production with 6/8 wheat
It seemed like Jwarrior had the best starting set up. Just goes to show how strong it is to be able to pick those 2 points from longest road. Of course the monopoly card was also critical, Jwarrior would of likely won the game without that set back. I like how Treck picked up immediately that the monopoly card was going to be played based on the trades.
I can tell you the mood was not good. At the time it left a sour taste in my mouth. But in retrospect it’s all part of the game and you just need to be on the lookout for it.
I personally choose to not do it, but I can see why others would do it. I have no problem with people use tricks like dirty monos. People can defend themselves against it.
From an offensive perspective, yes. From a defensive perspective, you leave the three best spots (8510, 5910 and 9411) open for the other players to take. Your relative strength makes it unlikely for you to win in that case. But it's possible.
@@Treeckosaurus Good point. Thanks for the reply. I need to get better at looking at what others have and what I might be leaving open. Also, would you ever do a video on tips on how to beat casuals? My family is mostly casual and they will often block randomly or do trades without thinking about how much it helps the other player. I have been watching a lot of videos and diving into the strategy. I think next time we play I should do fine with an OWS Hybrid setup but I am worried that thier lack of game knowledge could make the game more random
As 4th position I would have taken 8/4/10 and 8/5/10. You'd have the best sheep, there's a good chance the 9 ore will be open for you, and you can build to the wood port quickly.
Interesting suggestion Dr. Gonzo! If the 9 Ore would be left open, that's a pretty good set-up. But if someone takes 9/10/11, I think you lost, because with so much ore, I believe your set-up wouldn't be fast enough to play against the other players on a high Ore-Wheat board.
So I have a moral question for you? I trade away my wheat for ore then monopoly to get my wheat back. Is that an unacceptable thing to do in the community?
I personally don't do it, but I don't judge people who do. I mean: people can pay attention to it. Is it smart to win one game and damage your reputation? I don't know
Not impressed by Red's play. I am sure that at 59:21 he didn't even consider that he could buy 3 bricks and a wood, and steal the 5-2 settlement from Orange. Thanks Treecko for the upload! 😃
Yes I did consider getting the settlement but that doesn’t help me win. Trying for 4vps, although only a very small chance, was better than no chance at all.

Would have been fun if you won the game with 4VPs at the end
Why did you have to 2:1 with Jwarrior in the end? (wheat for sheep)

Dr. Gonzo yep, agreed.
Ah okay. I assume Vrej had no sheep or no hope left then
vrej was damned if he did, damned if he didn't on that 2nd placement. Either he gives JWarrior a monster on 8/5/10, or gives him monster wheat production with 6/8 wheat
Yea, I think he overall made the right call, he also was unlucky to get a strong start

Strong analysis!
Just a minor thing, I feel like the perspective makes it really hard to see what’s a village and what’s a city. Otherwise great video.
Thanks for the feedback, Jochen! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Who did you expect to win after the placements?
Wonder what the mood was on the table at the dirty mono by green at 43:00. What did Treeck and Hawkeye think of that?

Woudk forth position taking 8/3/4 and 9/10/2 be viable? You would be playing for wood port and 8/10 settlement
And you start with a free road

How to beat casual players is an interesting topic, thanks

I think you'd be able to get a few ores through trades with so much ore available and port them with wood once you get the wood port
Perhaps. I think with so much wheat on the board, players are not typically looking to trade their ores away, because they are used together

I think going for 4 VPs was the only way to win for him
Indeed. At this point he had already put himself into a practically unwinnable situation.
