Thankyou for sharing. Everyone wants to share the cool stuff but this type of video and constructive comments are excellent learning opportunities. Glad you didn't get hurt.
It can be tricky there when the wind direction is very off shore. Very hard to pull off the wave to the inside, the kite just keeps you in the impact zone. You have to exit to the outside if you wont make a section before it closes out. Then to make it even more fun as you get closer to shore the wind gets lighter and blocked by the mountain. If you crash your kite on the inside best to always swim hard away from the kite to keep the lines tight. If you keep them tight you wont get tangled in them and it keeps them off the reef. Best chance for a quick relaunch. Hope to be back in June. Like your vids, keep them coming.
Looked fun all the way right up until that close out section! It's easy to second guess after the fact but I'm pretty sure I would have climbed on the board after detaching from the kite. Either way, you'll take a beating but at least getting on the board could allow you to ride a wave off that sharp reef. Glad you're ok and will be back at it again!
0:34 though it might feel unnatural it’s really important to not pull the bar that much when you’re trying to quickly get out of a situation. He pulls the bar all the way in which makes the kite ‘semi-backstall’, it doesn’t drop back but it looses a lot of power (can happen a lot with lower or unstable winds). As you know the kite flies up and thus gains speed when you push the bar out which is really important for getting that extra necessary power in this situation. The kite dropped a few moments later cuz it was already tending to backstall
I agree. Kitesurfing may be very safe sport. But if you crash in waves and get lines tangled; any extra buoyancy might be between getting next breath or not
Count the mistakes: 1. Not changing direction when seeing the wave about to break 2. Not changing direction after recovering the board 3. Dropping the kite 4. Not using the board to get clear of the surf zone 5. Standing on the reef 6. Kiting in sunglasses that cost more than $10 7. Kiting too far out to swim/paddle back in Tempting to also put 'ditching the kite', but probably it or the lines were snagged on the reef by that point, leaving ditching the only safe option.
Definitely some mistakes but first of all with off-shore wind you can’t just change directions on the wave, he should’ve just jumped over the breaking section. Secondly you’re pretty much required to kite that far at One eye, that’s just where the waves break and that’s where you want to be with a surfboard of course.
Kite-boarder: MOM?? Mom: WHAT??? Kite-boarded: CAN YOU COME PICK ME UP?? Mom: DAMNIT!!! WHERE YOU AT THIS TIME COS THE BOAT IS STILL IN THE SHOP FROM THE LAST TIME!!!
Hey, first I'd like to say that I don't want to talk down to anyone or seem arrogant. This can happen to experienced riders aswell, and I'm not saying it can't ever happen to me. But to me it seems that many kiters who go out in the surf don't have much experience actually swimming in those conditions. As a surfer I would gradually work up to a swell like this, especially with rocks or reef underneath. If you want to kite there, why not take a few afternoons when the wind isn't good and just go out with only the board? Paddle around, see if you can get out over the waves, maybe even swim where the waves are breaking (on a smaller day first!!!) and get really comfortable. The guy in this video was really tense and got fucking mangled by whitewash that was not even that high. I do realise that your kite complicates things a lot, so get comfortable without it first. Key things to keep in mind: -If you are where the waves are breaking: Dive deep under them, keep your eyes open, get out of there. -Get your board as fast as you can. Use it as a boogie board, whitewash will gently push you to shore, DO NOT try to paddle into green waves, if you are to slow they WILL throw you. -Never hold your board as a shield infront of you. Waves are fast and water is heavy, you get the idea.
leash for surfboards is tricky, you can end up messing this and your bar lines together in a wipeout, i don't use a leash in big waves, i rather bodydrag downwing pretty fast but then again if you surf in rock area you need to have one for sure.
Thank you !!! I was very upset with my eletricity bill - brazil company -it-s belongs to aes ( american company) is is not the first time they mess , so after i see the video I am so relax now - beatiful place to pratice kite surfing , And i fpass for the same experince as you everthing wil means nothing!! Cherrs from Brazil!
Yes, second wave crashed me because was not enough wind for my 9m kite. I think that best decision in this situation is kiteloops without board like my friend in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PYa9dA6CEL4/v-deo.htmlm56s
Thank you for the reply, glad you are safe. Two weeks ago i had a similar situation. I lost the board, i had the kite at low angle going behind the wave, while i was inside the wave under water and couldn't see the kite, i thought that everything is fine since i still had tension in the lines, didn't think that waves were high enough to crash my kite and roll it, after it went down from me i couldn't see it anymore because of the waves, so i couldn't relaunch it because i wasn't sure if the lines were crossed so i released immediately. Also the wind was not strong i had a 14 m kite and it is very slow to turn couldn't get it up quickly at first.
at 0:12sec you made the wrong choice. my instinct when watching first time was to gybe right then, or go out over the top left of that wave, you need to read waves better and quicker dude. also even at 0:05sec I was already thinking this wind is on the lower range of this kite, to stay away from the waves and just enjoy some easy stuff, since the wind was too light.
Maybe you are right (I'm s surfer so I dont know about kite) but it's easy to say sitting in a comfortable couch. He was in it, with the adrenaline. Hard to think that way that fast in those situations.
Yeah, his problem was that kite pulling on him. If he was just surfing, he could have just pulled in his board and paddled back out duck diving under the waves or just let the white water wash him into shore. But he didn't want to lose his kite (strapped in and holding on) so he was getting pounded by the incoming waves. I wouldn't have any interest in kite surfing in or around large waves.
Bad timing I'd have waited till right after wave kept the kite high.. Yeah been in similar conditions always keep the kite high when off board, don't go low unless you wanner drown... just my tuppence worth to bare in mind.. glad it ended well tho ☺
Where's the horror? Try this but your kite splitting in half and couldn't get out of the waves for 30min.... One after the other and no-one to come pick me up... Ended up ditching the kite and swimming back to shore... Didn't lose my twintip thou... That's horror...
i dont understand why you stand there for so long? could you not walk on the reef to get your kite then paddle in on your board ? or am i missing something?
Thankyou for sharing. Everyone wants to share the cool stuff but this type of video and constructive comments are excellent learning opportunities. Glad you didn't get hurt.
Go kite surfing they said. Its fun they said.
Think Ill stick to collecting stamps

daversj it’s not the smartest to go out in offshore winds on your own ever really.
How you mean gets blocked by the mountain. He is going head on to the island, did you see a different video?!
Not sure what I just watched.....were you in a washing machine??? 🤔
in like 5 washing machine to be exact x)
Next to all that, the wave looked beautiful

Wow scary, glad you are ok!
Looks like you had a leash for everything but the kite.
I realeased leash of my kite because lines caught on reef. After I called to safety boat we take my kite.
wow I did not see that bit. Glad you were ok. Awesome spot too ;)
Yes, I am fine )) Spot is really good ;)
Pryde Club Mauritius haha i See This .
U would just get on my kite as a rescue boat
But I was not your position tho
I*
Something similar happened to me. Since then I've always worn a life jacket! Looks uncool? Who cares!
I've seen something called Restube. Just inflates when you need it, something like those lifeguard tubes!
I agree. Kitesurfing may be very safe sport. But if you crash in waves and get lines tangled; any extra buoyancy might be between getting next breath or not
I almost got drowned WITH life jacket.
And you would have gotten drowned WITHOUT life jacket? :)
dude a life jackets looks cool to me I love it xD

Golden... you almost made it that second wave... good stuff
Kite-boarder: MOM??
Mom: WHAT???
Kite-boarded: CAN YOU COME PICK ME UP??
Mom: DAMNIT!!! WHERE YOU AT THIS TIME COS THE BOAT IS STILL IN THE SHOP FROM THE LAST TIME!!!
That didn't have to go down like that.
As a surfer, my instinct. Grab the leash, pull in the board...
Seems like your place specializes with kite horrors.
Hahhha
All surfers should carry waterproofed cell phones with them when they go surfing.
How much water did you drink ?
- Yes
Beautiful wave before it closed out!!!!
he didnt realize how big that wave really was until it stould up on the inside hahahaha
Glad your alright!! That was quite a fight there!! Praise Jesus you got out!!
I’m out of breath just watching this
You know it’s big when it looks big on a GoPro 😬
Bravo, I wish I could give you a trophy for that ! Awesome !!!!!
Paradise turning into hell within seconds...

This should be a virtual reality experience.
How do you even handle to do some kind of surf with so much equipment on you, jesus sometimes having a board is trouble enough
That didn’t go to plan....glad u came out it in one piece bud....
leash for surfboards is tricky, you can end up messing this and your bar lines together in a wipeout, i don't use a leash in big waves, i rather bodydrag downwing pretty fast but then again if you surf in rock area you need to have one for sure.
If you will surf on One Eye without leash you loose your board after first wipeout!
Glad that you’re okay. Maybe avoid June 3rd every year.
I know that feeling 😁
Did you call for an Uber at the end? Looks like your kite belongs to the Sea now
To be fair a beautiful place
Horror! No bars when I go to call my mommy to tell her my Oakleys broke

a good advice... never step those reefs, there are stone fishes there
Me paso en bodyboard y como te pille bien una buena sucesion de olas, de ahi no sales. Es una experiencia muy desagradable

I think Tom Hanks must have been the instructor?
man i hope your kite is ok it seems bad
Can you please explain what did happen to make you lose control? i see you were back riding then crashed again, is it because of light wind?
Yes, second wave crashed me because was not enough wind for my 9m kite. I think that best decision in this situation is kiteloops without board like my friend in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PYa9dA6CEL4/v-deo.htmlm56s
