I just came back to let you know I viewed this video last year and today it was the day to remember this video.. got hit with high wind gust arround 25-28 knots with a 10m and I was unable to hold it.. thanks for this video! It did keep me safe on my way to the beach.
I have used this exact technique on the Baltic Sea where wind can pick up without the classic signs. Even with my mere 55kgs, I've managed to hold my kite on the edge of the window when everyone else was pulling the release. This video is a must-see for all kiters because it's not just about knowing what to do but understanding the mechanisms for why one should do it. Your videos are the best at explaining the mechanics of kitesurfing.
Today in the Baltic sea were two kiters - my friend and another one, both with 8m2 kites. My friend got overpowered and released after just 15 seconds of raising the kite. The other guy lost one of his lines (it opened for some reason) after some kiting, jumping, etc. Since the wind was stable at around 13 m/s and gusts went as high as 20m, these were pretty extreme conditions. There was also sharp snow at this velocity. A bit later I decided to launch my trainer kite and it hat crazy amounts of power and made a high pitch noise similar to drones from the wind. And then one of its lines broke. Crazy stuff. Anyway, I thought bringing it up would de-power it but thanks for proving why this is a myth.
Yes, it's a common thing. A lot of accidents happen, because people keep thinking, that 12 o'clock is safer, which is wrong for both heavy and light conditions (since in light wind it can fall directly down 12 if there is a wind gap). Spread the word to fix it!)
@@antonchernyshov8759 Yes indeed, this might save lives. By the way Anton, do you have any good tips on how to self rescue with a two front line flag out system, especially in strong conditions? Is it safe to self rescue via a steering line?
Wow, that was probably one of the best kite lesson edit I have seen. Especially on a subject that as a beginner kiteboarder has been confusing. I have heard very opposing views on the subject and was never able to get a precise answer. Thanks a lot, that definitely clarified it for me!
Yes, I was trying to achieve that. To bring a reasonable explanations of things and to provide some info for the beginners on the thery of how the wind works.
True. I've seen too many times, when people were getting hurt and loosing their equipment, while they could easily avoid that. Share it, if you have a chance. Take care and thanks for your comment!
So many technical details with excellent communication. I would say these are essential skills for anyone kiting in the great lakes in NA. Great video!
This lesson was very important, thank you so much! By instinct we let the kit ate 12 o'clock when overpower when the most secure is bring the kite low.
Thank you very much Anton for another bunch of invaluable tips! Every tip from you I applied has made me a better and more confident kiter. You also helped me to get rid of some dangerous bad habits. Whenever possible I spread your tips among my friends so your positive influence on our kiting skills is really visible. So please keep up the great work! Big ups from Slovakia! 🤙
Hey, nice to hear from my Slovenian brother) Thanks a lot. That's a big part of my motivation, to help someone to be a bit better, to feel confident, to progress. Thanks for you message, wishing you many cool sessions out there on the water!
I've received an important correction from my friend. I probably had to say "Slavic brother" or Slavonic, to avoid misunderstanding) That's what I meant. Sorry)
Excellent lesson to all.... I think most people were told on their first lesson that 12 0 clock was less Powerful... Well done in re-education! Subscribed for more pearls of wisdom ! 😀
Your videos are gold they have a unique way of explaining and presenting the information well done brother I really appreciate your time and effort and your information
GREAT video. Thanks for the tips. I was out on a 10 this morning (i'm a beginner still) and the wind picked up like crazy and I was wayyyy overpowered. Kept the kite at 12 thinking i'd limit the power, but it wasn't the case. Had to release the chicken loop in the end, and get back to the beach.
Fantastic video, thanks for posting! Keeping it low felt like I had more control in higher winds but did run counter to what I was initially taught (keeping kite at Zenith for low power). This confirmed my suspicion that your center of gravity needs to be behind the harness' attachment to the kite in order to maintain your leverage and the most control.
Great video everything make sense I use to have tendency to bring kite to 12 when powerful gust hit Once i almost loose the kite I was kitesurfing in Mazatlan with 21 soul kite I saw storm coming but i ignored that when gust hit me i started sail very fast then i panic moved kite to 12 & released kite instead flag out went vertically up the line broke & flu 500m & landed in water & sand
Yeah, you never know when it hits. Even in my middle Russia plain region, far from any sea, we sometimes have those 40-50 knots monsters, a lot of people flying over another, hitting cars etc. You'd better be ready)
Awesome videos. One more tidbit. Instead of just holding position in the water (which can become untenable in some extreme circumstance), you can ride in the opposite direction from the kite. Any speed you gain, subtracts apparent wind, and surprisingly I've found it to be very controllable. You can't go upwind (or even hold position) but you can get home downwind quick and flag out when you get near your beach.
Thank you some much) that's the thing I wonder about. Why everyone doesn't know it) Share it on some kite forum of your choice, it would be great and help my work.
shared it. Please keep them coming! Maybe a vid on launching a kite in different wind conditions and how to properly position yourself? This is another thing I sometimes struggle with
WOW - your videos are AMAZING!!! Thank you 🙏🏽 this was really helpful and so technical in so many ways 🤙🏽🤙🏽🏄🏽♂️💙 i learn a lot watching your videos !!
Nice vid well put together. I'd liked to have seen more emphasis on pushing the bar out rather than the few images of "leaning back" which causes the kite to power up.....
I stumbled across your video two nights ago, watched it several times, then next day when I was out kiting the winds went from 30 to 42 knots whilst I was out with an 8 metre. I am not much more than a beginner but I want to thank you for saving from serious injury yesterday. I had few bruises and a headache but it would have been much worse without heeding the lessons from your video. Just one request, what is the best way to I self land in the conditions shown in your video (because when i returned to shore, there was no one around) many, many thanks
Thanks for your story, really appreciate it! Well, I always use something to fix my chickenloop to with a safety leash and then put the kite on the ground to self land (walking to the kite, after my chickenloop is fixed). In case if there is nothing to fix the kite to, I would put the kite on the ground (or better water) and activate QR to let it hang on a safety line. Before that I would make sure there is nothing that blocks the way for the kite, that would likely roll over itself towards the center of the wind window before it settles on the ground.
Wow had been nice, I had seen the video two weeks earlier. It was kinda a horrible 10 minutes on the beach and in the first few meter in the water, fighting to get finally upwind in 53 knots of gusts...
I used to believe keeping the kite at 12 was the easiest and safest way to deal with overpowered conditions instead of bringing the kite low and dig your edge. That until I truly got once overpowered kite completed depowered bar all the way out and the kite started to lift me off the water during 40+ gusts. I finally realized that proper board edging and keeping the kite low is the best thing you can do on overpowered situations. To all fellas out there please keep it low and dig your board with a super aggressive upwind angle trust me it really works you can stomp loads of power by doing that.
Excellent advice! I made the mistake to wait for cool down on the beach w kite at 12 once, not knowing what to do. Veeeeery awkward 🤯 I'm surprised you don't recommend to push the bar far out however, or shouldn't it be done?!
It doesn't matter to have the bar far out, if your kite is at 12, once you are lifted your body will be faster going up than the bar since it slides freely, so you will end up pulling the bar unintentionally. You won't have time to react and land while the bar is pulled and maybe launch again if the wind is still strong enough to lift you again.
Good to know information but it is important as well that one doesn't rely on these techniques and go out in rough conditions, thinking if something happens he will apply the techniques. Sometimes if you decide to return to the beach or stay away from obstacles you will have to change direction and move the kite to 12 for a moment.
One day I was on my 17m on a light wind day when out of no where I was hit with a front gusting up to 30 mph. The kite was generating insane amount of power and I could not edge against it anymore. Fortunately, I was able to bring the kite all the way down and drag the lower wingtip on the surface of the water until I made my way back to the shore.
Hi! Thank you. Yes, I was thinking about that upwind episode. It is connected really close to the topic of holding a proper stance and loading the lines. That's how you go upwind. And it's neccesary foundation for good vertical jumps. To save some time, you can check out episode one here: vimeo.com/ondemand/learningtoflyepisodeone It's all about proper stance.
I just brought one of these for my kids to use, and I wished I had watched this video first.. Cuz one of them is still missing, and I'm starting to think I'm going to have to buy another kite now!
One this this didn't mention is when you're riding and suddenly speed up massively, skipping over the water so you can't edge the board. Easy solution: just lean back and stick your arm and ass in the water. A move I call the Handbrake
Hey this is a great idea, I had this situation exactly already and my only idea was to let go of the board completely and get down. Your idea is probably much better, will try that out next time it gets too rough, thanks!
Keep windsurfing, but know that when your body finally gives out and you can't Windsurf anymore, kiting will be there for you. (ex-windsurfer myself). And then you will be amazed at how easily you can travel AND rig up.
I saw people struggling in hurricane ciara, people were flipping over all over the place, I kept on falling over without a kite, and it was in 2020 and it hit the uk
I love your videos, watched all of them and learned tons of stuff from you, so thanks a million times. With regards to this video I completely agree that due to wind gradient wind is stronger at 12, but another factor that I think you must consider Is that it is "sometimes" easier to kill a considerable of power with you weight while completely leaning against the kit between 11 and 1 and keeping as much of an edge as you can and going as much upwind as i can. I do that when I feel my legs are burning because I am pushing to hard while edging to hold the power when the kite is lower. Does it make any sense?
Could you kindly prioritize mentioning the Safety System first? 🙏🏻 I truly appreciate the clarity and ease with which you explain concepts in your videos, especially regarding handling storms while in deep water. However, I respectfully disagree with the approach to beach reactions. Don’t you think it’s safer to emphasize teaching kitesurfers what’s safest rather than what’s coolest? Let’s make safety systems our number one priority; it could greatly reduce accidents in kitesurfing.
As an instructor and school owner I do not recommend to follow the advices on this video. It’s not safe! The only 2 right things I see in this video is not to keep your kite at 12 and how to use your board under the water to slowly drag with everything. But he failed to mention how to depower it. This video disregarded simply every kiteboarding safety rule...first of all: pulling on the bar will only put more tension on the lines and move the kite deeper into the power zone giving it more and more power, it will not move towards the edge of the wind window where there’s less power if you pull on the bar. It's the other way around. Must push the bar out. That’s why number 1 safety rule is “LET GO OF THE BAR”! Not tension on the lines. Kite will fall. It’s better in the water. Then you have your QUICK RELEASE, The Number 2 safety rule. “Kill” or flag the kite. This video also fails to mention the use of your DEPOWER/POWER TRIM. Utilize it! So basically putting the kite on the water, letting go of the bar and depowering would be the best thing to do. And get ready to eject is it doesn't get any better. Quick release. It's an emergency.
I catch a storm with my 12 Slingshot rally, it was so unexpected and so quick. The conditions before storm, was very light wind, we event can't go upwind. Suddenly I realize, that I go upwind, when I stop and brought my kite at 12, I go up to the air. So I decide to reliase my chiken loop. Grab my kite, and lost my board, which I was able to find later. No way, to keep kite at 12 or 9 or 3, the wind speed was crazy!!!
На видео нигде полиспаст не затянут (чтобы ослабить "производительность") и тянет планку на себя - еще добавляя газу, возможно конечно это сделано чтобы продемонстрировать овердоз и как тянет по пляжу.

Solid advice
I catch a storm with my 12 Slingshot rally, it was so unexpected and so quick. The conditions before storm, was very light wind, we event can't go upwind. Suddenly I realize, that I go upwind, when I stop and brought my kite at 12, I go up to the air. So I decide to reliase my chiken loop. Grab my kite, and lost my board, which I was able to find later. No way, to keep kite at 12 or 9 or 3, the wind speed was crazy!!!
but should you depower the kited as much as possible? because it wont go as much to wind window right?
На видео нигде полиспаст не затянут (чтобы ослабить "производительность") и тянет планку на себя - еще добавляя газу, возможно конечно это сделано чтобы продемонстрировать овердоз и как тянет по пляжу.
