It's almost ironic. Back in the day, people used to bash the N64 for being a "kiddy console" and the Xbox was "mature". And yet, the Xbox version of Conker has MORE censorship than the N64 original!
***** Not just that but for a very long time Nintendo were the worst when it came to censorship. Outside of Japan they had a policy where a long list of of stuff couldn't be put into games in an attempt to make the brand "family friendly".
Censored Gaming I would say though that their censorship policies in Japan were much worse than in the US though. I remember when Dr. Sparkle of chrontendo fame noted that American titles had much more sexy girls in them (just compare Taboo: The Sixth Sense (US only) to Chuugoku Senseijutusu (Japan only) and '89 Dennou Kyuusei Uranai (Japan only) and you already get a pretty good idea of what he means). That being said I hear that publishers such as Vic Tokai (The publishers of Golgo 13: Secret episode) never had problems with nintendo's censorship policies. Everything about the games they published (including the aforementioned Golgo 13: Secret Episode) was always fully detailed in Nintendo Power. The fact that they were probably the closest you could get to the current AAA industry courtesy of the fact that they were a branch of a huge media conglomerate may have something to do with that.

+dannydsi3d I personally loved most of the censored content. I agree with Chris' opinion of some things sounding funnier when beeped out. I always got a bigger laugh out of watching Family Guy or Robot Chicken with tv censorship, compared to the uncut dvds, especially when the characters start swearing non stop. I'm also glad they replaced that disturbing deleted scene with that humorous scene with the 2 Tediz getting into character. The game just wouldn't have been the same without it, even if it was going to be a part of the credits. With how sadly the game ended, I don't think animated outtakes would have fit that very well. The game already took a surprise turn, when they ended a comedy filled adult game, into a sad story that reflects the vague beginning of the game.
Bad fur Day at least, would be almost the same tbh.

Whoever thought of the idea to censor the Great Mighty Poo in Live and Reloaded deserves to be fired. They seriously thought it was a good idea to censor easily the most memorable moment in the entire game? How would they even keep it from being offensive considering that you fight a giant boss made of shit throwing shit at you. (No pun intended since he literally says he's going to throw his shit at you in the N64 version of the song) (The word shit is also uncensored)

I don't understand the stigma of a Censored game = a bad remake. I get that It subverts your expectations with cartooney animals swearing, but here's the thing, "Swear words on their own are not inherently funny." And honestly, I think it adds another layer to the subversion and even makes some cutscenes even funnier, although I do say that some of the censorship is kinda ass backward at times. But ppl need to stop assuming the game is bad just because of added censorship.

To be honest, the surgery scene was dark but to me, it was fitting. They were based off the Nazi's, who tortured people, and so there the tediz are, torturing people! Yeah its hella dark but I want to see that scene in the game, since I honestly think it fits the game well. You have a M rating, go big or go home is what I say!

It’s mainly Josef Mengele who was one of the Nazi doctors, he was very messed up. I feel like the scene is based on him, but I’m just saying of my opinion.

You know, it would be awesome to ask rare to start a kikstarter or similar for an actual "uncut" remake of Conker. And I know this would piss Microsoft off, but maybe they will understand that they can make money out of that!

Here's some extra tidbits regarding the removal of the Halo cameo and censorship in Live & Reloaded:
In an interview with Chris Seavor on the defunct fansite Rare-Extreme, the magazine (along with a Halo reference in one of the multiplayer maps) was changed because Bungie took offense to the material being used without their permission.
"R-E This is that lava map, but look whats up in the sky. Anyone familiar with a little game called Halo can remember what that is. Seems Rareware has taken lots of goodies from Halo eh.
Chris Heh, Mr Bungie wasn't too happy about that being on there (last E3 if memory serves me correct)

According a Tepid Set (Rare's Q&A on specific games) that used to be on Rare's official site before the Kinect frenzy, Microsoft had them further censor it because they wanted to sell Live & Reloaded in more retail stores than the N64 version.
"Chris: If we allowed the swearing to be uncensored, many of the big retailers would not have sold the game. It is as simple as that. We had it all set up and working, but we had to remove the code when the decision came in. As for the rewards, they are an incentive to get and play Live. At least you still have bots!"

Wow, how disgraceful! Living proof that Microsoft didn't actually care about Rare when they bought them out from Nintendo, they just wanted a big name developer to work for them so people would buy their console for something besides Halo!

It seens that you're not well informed, actually the *Resident Evil 4* was being developed EXCLUSIVELY for the GameCube by nintendo's request, crapcom fucked the contract od exclusivity and ported to many plataforms but censored these later, only the RE4 CG was uncensored, unbelievable! Right?
I wish the Xbox version had stuck with the "Live and Uncut" thing, with an option to enable/customize the censorship from the N64 version. (well, I guess they'd have needed to change the Pikachu thing enough to avoid infringing on Nintendo's copyright or whatever)

I'll admit, the Tediz operation scene was pretty disturbing to watch despite it being in 64-bit graphics, and I'm kinda glad it wasn't included in the final version of the game as well. :P

On the Conker Live and Reloaded you could disable the Beeps in Single Player after you completed the game once.

That autopsy scene just goes beyond balls-to-the-wall too far. What really makes it fucked up is the music. That song can get stuck in your head for hours and hours and it would fit perfectly for if you're experiencing such trauma, like someone from your family died right in front of you.

Surprised xbox was so stupid as to censor the game more than Nintendo did. I can't think of any way that could have helped business wise. Must have just had some really dumb executives or something.
Well remember the N64 version flopped largely because Nintendo refused to give it press coverage, any several retailers refused to sell due to its mature themes. Microsoft's censorship policy for the remake actually makes sense because more retailers would actually carry the game in their stores if it was censored. An uncensored version (even less censored than the N64 version) would be difficult to sell as most retailers would refuse to carry it. That said, I think it actually sold less than the original; although I can't confirm. If they did make a new Conker game, it would probably be less risky to make it extremely mature and uncensored due to the popularity of digital store fronts and online retailers like Amazon to bypass troublesome retailers.
I love describing CBFD to people who've never played it and them being totally confused and intrigued.
Chris Seavor has since updated his stance on the humor of Conker's Bad Fur Day, saying that if he were to remake the game now, he would remove certain jokes because he no longer found them funny and is embarrassed by them now, one of which being the infamous Mr. Cog sequence, which he sees as making light of sexual assault and could be triggering to victims. Cloud Connection's retrospective on the game mentions Seavor's modern stance on the humor in the latter half of the video, around 47 minutes in.
Microsoft needs to remaster this game in an uncut version ! Censorship sucks and it's a shame this game has been censored so much, sadly 20 years later things haven't changed that much and the industry is still not mature...
an option to turn on and off the language should have been included, gears of war and brutal legend had them, i wouldn't censor it but it's nice knowing that the option is there.

Well, Rare were actually quite naughty in general, at the time. In fact, as many of you will know, Banjo Kazooie and Tooie are full of pretty (low key) iffy innuendo (even stuff that would warrant a T/16 today), and the bartender in Tooie would be borderline illegal in some places to portray nowadays in exactly the same ways due to certain speech laws. Conker was a lot more explicit, of course, and, like 'Naughty Bear' (PS3/360), no amount of warnings on the case will deter oblivious parents from picking it up for their wee ones due to quickly scanning the fluffy main characters on the cover and assuming it's suitable.
Poop humor and pop culture references were able to hide the dull level design and platforming when I was a teenager, but looking back... It's a rather shitty game
I never knew this game was mature. Now that i've seen this video, i'm really glad i bought Rare Replay. (Next thing i'll buy, is an xbone. :P) I'm cautious about Rare Replay selling out like hotcakes, like that mario game, and the kirby one..

Like (and/or reply) if you find it odd that Conker's Bad Fur Day, EASILY the most inappropriate and overall gross game, at least for the N64 days, had to be CENSORED.
+Mojo Yomo I agree, although I do find the removal of the Pikachu cameo reasonable (Nintendo did not want a character from one of their newest kid-friendly cash cows being involved in an M-rated game, even though it was originally going to be kid-friendly).
Even the giant cave woman looks toned down in the xbox version.

The Xbox version had another form of censorship, but it wasn't a cutscene censorship, and is actually a censorship of one of Conker's idle animations. In the Xbox version, when standing still long enough, Conker would pull out a dirty magazine with Berri on the cover. In the original N64 version however, there was a picture of a topless cartoon beaver on the magazine. The image itself is so low res though, and can barely be seen, especially since the N64 version had poor camera controls, compared to the remake.
Not to mention that there's a strange edit in Live and Reloaded where Conker pulls out a nonspecific handheld device and plays Killer Instinct on it. The sounds are all from the Arcade version, so it's rather bizarre in hindsight. I believe in the original Bad Fur Day, the same device appears to be playing Conker's Pocket Tales instead.

is too bad that Rare replay only have the nintendo version which in most people's eyes is the superior version. The xbox version of Conker live and reloaded can definitely be added as downloadable content. We gonna have to wait and see if they add the Xbox version plus they can also add additional games of their Cadillac as downloadable content as well.

Holy shit, i forgot completely how good the Xbox version's graphics were in comparison to the N64 version, its unsettling almost.

If I was to guess, the reason why the other two squirrels were censored in the N64 version was that it resembled the site of Jesus's crucifixion where the other two men were also crucified and Nintendo has a policy of no religious references in their games. Microsoft doesn't have that policy so they probably let Rare put it back in the game. However, that's just my theory and as far as I know, nothing is confirmed.

Wait so the censorship on Conker Live&reloaded that everyone is going on about is actually just beeped out swear words? That's it? The way everyone goes on about it you'd think they changed the entire game.
It's not just that though. For example the last part of the War level where Conker was running back to the boat and Sarge had the snipers take out those Tediz was different. In the N64 version the snipers hit them with headshots that took off half of their heads while the Xbox version didn't. The headshots was one of the things taken out in the Xbox version that disappointed me. There was a lot more censorship not covered in this video but this video gives a nice overview of the differences.

Toning down Conker (and most games, to be honest) is stupid. Sure, the surgery scene is kind of hard to watch, but it perfectly fits.

The reason Conker wears pants in the remake is because Microsoft was afraid of "public nudity", and indecent exposure.
The outfit was actually intended for the rejected Conker 2, but it ended up being used here for convenience; At this point, Rare was working on 3 projects at once by order of Microsoft and all 3 games were rushed, with Conker: Live and Reloaded being the only game to make it into the original Xbox and the other 2, Kameo: Elements of Power and Perfect Dark Zero, were pushed back into the Xbox 360.

With the Xbox modding scene being as it is, and the innards of the game being fairly easy to rip into...I wonder how hard it would be to graft the N64 audio into the Xbox cut.
Hard I guess. There is not many ROMS or emulators for the original Xbox. That's a very good question, but the audio wouldn't match the controller layout and it would be pretty low quality.

XandXTV Even more ironic is the tale of a famous rapper called 50 cent. He allows his kid to play M-rated games such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but he makes sure that the game is played in mute first so that his kid does not get exposed to the swearing.
Battlefield and COD are censored. Or, rather, scenes and other things are removed or changed in the final build. You just never hear about it because that's how game development works.

I wonder if you would someday also talk about games that experienced the exact opposite of the censorship you detailed, such as was the case with Shadow The Hedgehog. When it was first translated it turned out that the game would only get rated E in the US, which is in general a very unprofitable rating to obtain. So they added some extra swear words and slang language so that it would get the T rating instead. (I wonder if that last bit is still considered censorship to you).
It got the in between rating (E10+) instead so they missed it by a notch.
The Xbox version looks amazing honestly, the censorship sucks but rare does a fine job getting the most out of the hardware.

John Leone The original censorship was done for a "comedic effect". Nowadays censorship is a much more sensitive topic so if this game came out nowadays, it wouldn't be censored at all most likely.

However, if the older version, which was released on a NINTENDO console, didn't censor "twat" or "shit", then why the fuck is it censored in the Xbox version? After all, the original Xbox, just like the 360 and One, was and is still meant for more mature audiences.
John Leone Because Rare was bought out by Micro$oft's dumbasses and they fucked it up. The original devs themselves talked about how they were unhappy with the extra censorship in the remake.
