As for Skull Face, I always thought the black face was to represent shadow. He's a mysterious creature, a lost Kokiri transforms into a skull kid. Makes total sense in the world of Ocarina of Time.

i think it does, but you know how paranoid nintendo is about their image, they probably just didn't want to risk it.
I know this is a whole 4 years old, but people are more sensitive to that sort of stuff in the West, just take a look at Twitter nowadays, it really doesn't take much to set them off so it's completely understandable.

Yeah, I wouldn't really want to buy something that was being advertised with "Willst thou get the girl? Or play like one?". Maybe it could've been funny 30 years ago, but today it would just be confusing and stupid. Unless it was being deliberately sexist for some Duke Nukem type of game, but that wasn't the case.

Curious Cat I don't see how the skull kid is racist. He was black because he is supposed to be made of nothing, not because he is black. That's why you only see his eyes and mouth because the rest of his body is darkness.
Dark Shadow he may have been created without racist intentions but some ppl can still have certain feelings of it so they were right to change it

The 3ds version also censored the shadow temple. The wall and floor patterns in most rooms are mostly skull and bones in the original 64 version but are now just dirt. They also removed the blood in the shadow temple in the later versions of the original 64 game.
I always loved the Islamic chants in the fire temple. I thought it really matched the theme of the dungeon. that and I thought it sounded beautiful. one of the main reasons why I always play the n64 version.
I am Muslim. And I am a fan of the legend of Zelda series. The chants in the fire temple are actually calls to prayer and it's not allowed to play music during it.
I like the chants too, it feels like a hellish environment which fits the theme of the temple and music.
hazam ahmed they are also calls to kill christians. at least our prayers werent used to "lawfully" execute people for believing something different.

3. It's not strictly forbidden, but it's considered disrespectful to have music over it. They were just trying to show respect and avoid controversy by having religious content in the game.

VirusPF I can't speak for the others, but I know about blackface. I don't know any black Americans who don't know about Blackface. What we were saying was that it didn't come to mind to us when playing and I was in my late teens when playing OoT. I viewed the characters as having shadowed over faces because of their hats or hair. With the way Jynx looked when defeated in Stadium, she loses her hair. I thought of them in the same way I did Orco from He-Man.
I think the only way I would've associated them with Blackface, was if they were acting moronic or stupid. Neither character did.

You forgot that the Forest Medallion was changed in OOT3D due to its slight resemblance to a Swastika.

I remeber when my dad bought the n64 game as a present and neither of us knew that different versions existed on the same system, but by pure luck the copy he found was the original.

Skull kid was changed because nintendo thought it was blackface. Not every character with a black face is offensive
unfortunately, Japanese game companies and SJWs don't understand that.
While I think the need for censorship with characters that are colored black is ridiculous, I like what they changed it to. Those eyes and mouth on just a pure black face looks weird.
Honestly thought Skullkid's face was shrouded in shadow similiar to Black Mages from Final Fantasy. No matter how hard you try though some people will go out of their way to be offended just so they can complain.
The whole black face thing is completely ridiculous. im surprised it never happened with vivi from final fantasy 9.
and really...i think skull kid and vivi/black mage are really going for more of a Jawa thing than a blackface thing, what with the yellow eyes peeking out from a hidden/featureless face

The symbol on the blocks are a nice touch regardless of what version you are playing. You see the symbol is actually Ganon's emblem. Namely the one associated with the Gerudo. It's similar to how the blocks in Majora's Mask have the Majora symbol on it. The symbol on the blocks in both games represent the main antagonist of the respective game.
You forgot about the blood in the bottom of the well and the shadow temple and the change to dead hand.
It's also possible that the Skull Kid change was done for consistency reasons with Majora's Mask, as English copies of the game also change his face to have a wooden texture. Japanese copies might have too, but I'm 99.9% sure it was on all copies of Majora's Mask 3D.
I'm really glad I still have my Gold Cartrage. Damn the changes! I love the original Fire Temple and Mirror Shield!

Not that I agree with the changes.. but I do want to point out that people tend to mis-use censorship. This is not censorship, censorship is the governing authority of the land forcing changes to fit their agenda.
While it's questionable if any of these changes should have been made, it's really no different than an editor making edits to a book before publishing.

Ah, the memories of the gold cartridge. The sample is what really makes the Fire Temple music pop, though. The Gamecube version just loops the music before hitting that point while the 3DS music awkwardly replaces it with Shadow Temple wailing.
The fire temple ost gets edited, but then Majora's mask still has the dark/catastrophic themes in the remake. Rating is E for everyone.
The 3DS version was further censored in the well and shadow temple. Now there's no blood to be found anywhere on the torture devices. Makes both locations way less creepy..
There's still blood. It's just darker, seemingly dry blood to indicate that it's a very ancient temple
Also in some rooms in the shadow temple they replaced the skull and bones wall floor pattern with dirt.

Didn't know that Nintendo used a sampling program for that chant. I guess they're not directly responsible for it being made, it just sounds like the perfect atmospheric sound though for the fire temple. Kinda sucks we live in an age where feelings are too fragile to make sense. Give the people a true experience, not a softened version.
4 years late, but I've actually heard that they removed it because nintendo did not want to put anything religious in their games. I would fact check that though
I never saw Skull Kid as that at all. His beak and eyes do not really resemble them to me, unlike Popo and Jynx that is. He looked way more unique and I have seen many black figures with eyes like that where I honestly did not pick up the reference at all and had to wait until I found out why it was censored.

I have the uncensored 1.0 release. Unfortunately, the Game Pak was destroyed by a hurricane shortly after it was dumped. I have two copies of the rom now: one as-is and one with the redux patch.
They also got rid of the blood in the well, and the great fairy is now covered in vines
The original fire temple theme is absolutely TERRIFYING.

Funny how they censored all these things but not the ability to hookshot on the Goddess Statue's nipples in the Spirit Temple. Not even in the 3DS version.
I have the uncut and uncensored N64 cartridge. Scary version of the Fire Temple with the vocals, Ganon coughing red slime instead of green, crescent moon Gerudo symbol. Needless to say uncut Fire Temple theme is very disturbing. Even more so then the Shadow Temple.
I think it is worth mentioning that Skull Kid's had there face designes changed several years prior in Twilight Princess. You encounter a single skull kid in the games Lost Woods area before retrieving the Master Sword. This Skull Kid had a Woodan face. Censorship or designe changes? Both are possible reasons.
The shadow of Bongo Bongo escaping from the Well, it’s colour was changed a few times over the different versions and ports.
I can’t remember what it was in the original, it’s been a long time. But in the gamecube/wii shop port and the 3DS versions it was purple and black or dark grey.

drakionclawers I went back and checked, apparently it does have the censors, like the Fire Temple music and the green blood. I guess all PAL carts are really 1.3

I argue that censoring the commercial improved it; the juxtaposition's a pretty funny punchline, and asking if we'll get the girl kinda misses the point of the game. ^^;

I was fortunate enough to receive Ocarina of Time for Christmas the year it came out, the original v1.0 gold cartridge, completely uncensored. I can understand some people being irked over aspects of their religion being used for entertainment, but I can't quite relate. The symbol of my religion is the pentagram, which is frequently used in horror movies to show that there are evil forces lurking about. Does it irritate me a little? Yes, because it perpetuates ignorance, but I will never promote censorship.

On the advertising, I think its good they changed it, cause well Link doesn't actually get a girlfriend in OoT, so Will's Thou Soar or Will's thou Suck fits better. No false advertisement and all that.

My copy has green blood and no chanting but still has the original symbol on the shield.
I bought my daughter the 3ds version a while back thinking it was just a port of the original n64 version. She later showed me all the things that was changed. I was so upset that they had messed with such a perfect game that I ordered a Nintendo 64, a copy of the game and a rumble pak off of amazon just so she could play the game as I did 18 years ago.

And if you want ganondorf to bleed you'll have to make sure you get the first printed copies which are a bit more expensive
you were so enraged that they removed a bunch of islamic references from a video game targeted at children that you went out of your way to buy the original just so your daughter could see it with all the islamic references intact... thats not good parenting, thats a major waste of money and mild child abuse.
There is enemies in Contra 4 that look kinda like the uncensored skull kid, i'm surprised they didn't avoid this .

The only change that felt justified, despite my always liking it (I was a high school senior, didn't even know it was Islamic) is the chant in the Fire Temple given how it's used and how it is offensive. It is ironic, though how there was no controversy over it and Nintendo changed it after realizing it.
Everything else felt unnecessary to change.

Or just track down the one that has the letter A on it. I heard that, with the cartridge that doesn't have ANY letter, there is a glitch where, if you saved and reset right after Ganon knocks the sword out of your hand, you will respawn on the very first floor of Ganon's Tower before fighting his human form, but without the sword on your B button or in your inventory. This is later fixed in the version that has a letter A on it.
The highest rated game on Metacritic? If only that actually mattered....

The G in Gerudo is canonically a hard G, not a soft one.
I know I got thrown out of whack at this censorship , because I played the original when I was a kid but somehow I got rid of my copy, i don’t remember if I lost it or trade it at GameStop, but later I replayed the game in the GameCube and somehow it felt different, specially getting at the part in the fire temple, it didn’t had that eeerie feeling, idk it just vibed different. I started to think 🤔, maybe because I’m older now. Then I found out it went trough different revisions. I didn’t had internet 🛜 when I was a kid, but I remember playing the Demo at a kiosk at Walmart, played the Deku Tree demo and Milo’s guarding the passage way. That hooked me into getting the game. This game friendzoned link 🔗 tough. Well … 😅

I had the Pal version, and had the blood, chanting, the original mirrorshield and the original skullkids. Bought my copy on day one. I Hate myself for selling it.
Me personally, I like the Mirror shield 🛡️ Originsl design, the Scarlet edge color with silver and moon 🌙 with a star ⭐️, I think 🤔, but being a kid and oblivious to whatever that is, someone somewhere decided to change it, because of reasons, my get up for link was the Red Tunic with the Original Version Mirror 🪞 Shield, Master Sword. Hylian Shield Blue Tunic, Master Sword, yeah 👍, and Hylian Shield and Green Tunic , and Master Sword. The Gauntlets were also awesome! The Golden ones let the player pick up Giant Rocks and Big Ass blocks of Rock.

Yes while Zelda Ocarina of Time did remove the crescent moon symbols and the fire temple chant song, and changed skull kid's dark face which I'm indifferent about.
One thing in the game that ruins the gameplay experience is the annoying fairy Navi, oh how I dislike her annoying voice, she keeps repeating "Hey!", "Listen!", "Yo!", "Watch out!" over and over and over! Ugh, why did Nintendo hire a voice actress Kaori Mizuhashi to do her voice it's awful and annoying. I'd rather listen to Bubsy 3D talk instead of Navi, at least Bubsy 3D gave us the option to turn off voice acting, why didn't Zelda Ocarina of Time give us that option huh?
I'm definitely for censoring and silencing Navi, and if there's one thing I would change about Zelda Ocarina of Time it's to have the option to remove voice acting and only then I would consider Zelda Ocarina of Time to be a perfect game. Navi sure is Links worst partner.
Someday in the afterlife when I'll get to play video games, I'll have an updated version both N64, Gamecube, and 3DS Zelda Ocarina of Time without the terrible Navi voice acting. I like the fairy Tatl in Majora's Mask better, less annoying and doesn't annoy you, unlike Navi who won't be quiet. It just makes me not want to replay Zelda Ocarina of Time very much.
The ReDead design in the 3DS version is different from the original. Would that be censorship or just an update?
