Having never flown before, I was actually concerned about it. I never wanted to travel abroad and have been happy all my life in the U.K. but as I approached 50 I decided I'd finally apply for a passport so I can at least fly in a plane ✈️ but COVID-19 hit and I turned 50 in November 2020 so I just haven't bothered. Maybe I never will now!
@@ethansaviation2672 Strange that when I was approaching 50 that I suddenly wanted to go places. I think it's from watching these videos but I really fancy the idea of just taking a short flight somewhere and to come back the next day.
Watching trip reports that are pre pandemic is depressing, when you look at how much has changed. It almost feels like pre pandemic was 3-5 years ago, and not less than a year back.
Agreed and the way things are going it isn't going to get back to normal anytime soon 😔 I think the days of bloated business trips may well be a thing of the past
@@makuuhne But borders being closed isn't normal. Other countries aren't just distant in space, they're also two weeks away in time, if you count the 10-14 day quarantines required for most countries. It's a strange way of having to look at the world after years of having easy and fast global travel.
It has felt quite nostalgic to see American Airlines out of T3 and the old BA 747s in action. It's been quite a year. Merry Christmas, Paul. Thank you for all that you do and here's to an improved 2021!
Viewing the beautiful clouds from a window seat has got to be - for me - one of the most wonderful things of flying. Always makes me think about life and it's wonder.
Another fantastic video Paul, really enjoying your channel, particularly during these difficult times when travelling is out of reach for most of us. Thank you
I agree, that's a goofy seating arrangement. I don't fly very often and was surprised to learn that in such a luxurious business class one is expected to pay extra for internet. Perhaps that standard, but it seems like that charge should be reserved for coach.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your train/plane coverage. Your carm and well informed. I really do enjoy your style of delivery and the comfortable feel of each video :D *Pats comment for good luck
Another great video! I used to be the supervisor that put food on AA flights in BOS. Suffice to say things have changed since way back when. I'm glad they still present a bang-up sundae! If you had flown on AA business back in then, you would have feasted on filet mignon. Those days are gone.
Having flown a lot of US airlines, if you can get past the aesthetics and some comfort issues, they really do a good job. The food is usually good and the attendants are generally very good at their jobs.

Paul, I would recommend seat guru because once you search your flight is shows you your plane seat map. It shows in depth the way each seat is facing. Happy travels
I’m a flight attendant for AA, currently furloughed. I used to be NY based and would work JFK-LHR when I could. I loved working business class (but on the 777-300) and I also hate those janky fold out tables. I would eat sooo much on those international flights from all the leftover food and desserts. The seats aren't THAT bad. It's AA's worst J seat, and is still definitely far above the old products found on large portions of some airlines' fleets. Once you recline the seat and pop out the screen, it is much more private.
I will do about anything to avoid changing planes in Heathrow. Long miles of corridors, up and down stairs and escalators, hopping on shuttle buses, redoing security. A much needed inside of security tram system would be their best solution, but I don't see that happening.
Even a pain going from a flight from the continent to transfer to a flight to JFK inside of the same terminal (T5, US passport holder) have to get on the people mover, go on a quest for the “transfer” area, scan your tickets and passports, get rid of any bottled water (but I was just on an airplane with this!) go upstairs, back through the security lane... only to find that your JFK flight is back out in the satellite gates, so it’s back onto the people mover again! (Thankfully we had a decent layover to allow for eating a late lunch, can’t imagine doing that with a 30 minute connection! Probably best to not try it at all.)
@@joermnyc The same thing has happened to me. Also happened to friends of mine who had "only" a one-hour connection time on a busy day, they missed there connecting flight.
I was at Heathrow yesterday and flights were barely half full, especially with these new travel restrictions imposed on the UK. The airport was the most empty I’ve ever seen it, a stark contrast to the beginning of the year. It’s nice to remember what times were like before all the chaos!
Loved the “tier point run” concept, I’d love to see video series on how you plan, book and then review the flights. Kinda a behind the scenes. I know there will be many of us who fly regularly who’d love to build up lost status once the lock down clears. They may even be a few good deals on offer as the airlines get back up on their feet again. It could also be a nice way to help support them too. For instance, why American and not BA? For BA status - just fun? Or better points / cheaper flights? Could you have used a mix of one world airlines ? BA & AA? I know BA’s system is different to star alliance, so I’ve had Platinum membership with AerLingus but not been able to use the BA lounge, etc. Keep up the awesome videos, stay safe!

Great review as always Paul - wonderful sunset shots on landing. And good to get a bit of a view about how to max your points. I did LHR - SFO in February with BA - out on the A380 and back on a 747 - I'm so glad I went and got one last trip on the Queen of the Skies :)
For your 3 legged trip did you book separate tickets or one big ticket with a stopover? If I remember correctly seat guru also has all the seats facing forward! Anyway the seat is not that bad it still beats Delta's 767 seat I found the biggest issue with the seat was the narrow foot space in bed mode, and if you're in any kind of relaxed position the IFES is very far away and those side controls are worthless (for the IFES)
Paul, thank you for another great video. It is so different to see a travel video filmed before the start of our old buddy, the virus. When was all this filmed? Actual food and beverage on a flight, what a concept! Stay safe. Have a great rest of the holiday season.
Not sure why you couldn’t see which were the rear wards facing seats till check in. Flew AA on 787-8 2 years ago from Chicago to Manchester and it was visible on seat map right from reservation 8 months in advance
Since the 772 has both seat configurations and final tail numbers aren't assigned until just before the flights AA always shows the "normal" seat chart until they finalize which aircraft will actually be flying the route, then the little "tabs" appear. Until now all 788's have had just the concept D seat, hence you could see the notches. Now that new 788's are arriving with the Super Diamond Layout eventually the 788 will have a similar dilemma.
Just 11 months ago and it shows how fast things can change when circumstances do - all those retired aircraft for instance. I wonder if we'll ever return to those days. Makes me very sad. Humanity is about sharing and interacting. If that goes because of fear, I question whether it's worth it.
I've come to the conclusion that, given all the travel restrictions, governments should provide free magic mushrooms to everyone. That way we can all go on a trip without ever leaving the house. Merry Christmas, Paul. Keep the videos coming. They're the only travel experience I've had in a year.
Paul, I love your use of the term “cracking.” When you showed the video choices there was one that was titled “Crashing,” last thing you want to watch, while in the air.
I just wanted to say that I live through you Paul! I can’t afford to travel and even less in business class! You have a very pleasant voice and when you post a video, I jump on it. I love planes and hope to be able to travel again some day. Love your videos and Merry Christmas!
Paul, you seem to forget that BA had a very similar layout on some of their 747-400 series planes. My parents flew on those once or twice. At least the cabin is comfortable for very long flights.
The layout on BA's Club World is quite different - and is still on most of their aircraft (I released a video on BA Club World cabin only three weeks ago :-D ua-cam.com/video/IwAr_8Qvqgw/v-deo.html). The only similarity between the two cabins is half the seats face backwards, but at least this seat doesn't have the serious limitations of serving through a divider and very intimate eye contact prior to the safety briefing.
I agree with you, Paul. Those seats don't look the best in terms of comfort. I suspect those of us who are just a tad "more chubby" than most , would definitely feel cramped. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
how do the pre-orders in LHR terminal restaurants/venues work if your flight is delayed and/or resulting layovers don't allow you to collect what you ordered? Are you still charged for the order even though you have no control over receiving it or not?
That was a great price you got there - I've got no excuse to do something like this at least once a year if deals like that are around (I've never flown long-haul business).
rear facing middle seats in J pretty private as its same as the super diamond layout. only real good seat is 1a and 1j as its the only seat for the window that doesnt face another human
Yes. Also if you have BA executive silver status, which ever class of seat your flying. You can also take a companion in the lounge with silver status with you.
After many years of travelling as a serviceman and chef I have been diagnosed with coeliac disease, do you come across gluten free options on your flight travels Paul? I got the surfshark offer, many thanks for that and a merry Christmas to you all!
Nearly all flights with complementary food will allow you to pre-order a gluten free meal (or vegan, Asian vegetarian/Indian, Kosher, Halal, etc.), regardless of cabin. You can normally do it by calling Reservations or through the website under Special Assistance in Manage my Booking.
Interesting report, Paul. I checked out the INV to SFO route versus EDI to SFO and the taxes were certainly lower, but the overall price had a HUGE difference. £3,350 per pax from INV and £1,580 from EDI, both return. Same planes from LHR and from SFO, so just the shuttles from Scotland were different. Any thoughts? dates 13/04 to 03/05, but checked all the dates around - those were the cheapest.
Hi Paul, I was looking at the business class fare on both routes and both show J to/from LHR and I to/from SFO? I flew with Finnair Business to NZ (into CHC and out of AKL) in January/February and paid about the same as the BA's oneworld fare INV to SFO. It is a weird price difference for INV.
I hate facing the wrong direction on a train, I can imagine its even worse on a plane. Especially at take off, your facing the ground instead of the sky
I notice you don't have airplane mode enabled, but in case you don't know you can still keep WiFi and GPS on in airplane mode. It will reduce your battery draining from searching for cellular signal 😃

Merry Christmas, Paul. Keep the videos coming. They're the only travel experience I've had in a year.
yes i want that.
Thank you Carole! I get a lot of compliments about my voice 😂 Merry Christmas!
Great video as always Paul thanks for the explanation about the points for each flight, your a top Geezer for doing that.
Did you do a video on how you started this career? This looks like soo much fun! Thanks for the great content!
Love your videos Paul. They are natural, realistic, no hype, no mania, informative but most of all inspiring too. Long may they continue. ;)
Fantastic music, great video, feeling of nostalgia to the last decade which was the last of the classic jet aircraft....
Hi Paul. Did you ring a bell just before boarding the aircraft. What was that for ?. Great review ...cheers.
Merry Christmas Sir. After A Long Time. Nice To See...Stay Safe...Love From India..
Hi Paul, I wish that a plane preservation group can form to make the old planes flyworthy. Like railway preservation groups do
Very clever with the tier points paul!!
happy holiday Mr. Paul Lucas...safe flight
US based airlines get a bad rep, but they do a pretty good job with long haul
They have a bad rep for a reason. They’re trash compared to the likes of Singapore or Emirates.
@@hothotheat3000 yeah but they’re Usually a slightly lower price a serve an entirely different route market.
Some of there 777-200 are BE Super Diamond and then some of them have the backword facing seats.
once again .... despite your lovely videos the music is heavenly!
I would love to see an Air Canada business review! If you ever get the chance.
Already done one! ua-cam.com/video/_ScHmA-x2Nk/v-deo.html
rear facing middle seats in J pretty private as its same as the super diamond layout. only real good seat is 1a and 1j as its the only seat for the window that doesnt face another human
Great being part of your trip whilst most of us are ‘grounded’ due to Covid
@@danieljones672 I am proud to be Jewish and associated with Israel.
hey saw u went to lhr on ur channel bullfrog how were u treated as a jewish/outsider person?
Jewish people are not outsiders in Britain. Nobody is.
@@AN-pl5rh Wingin’it! Paul Lucas has answered your question
Nobody cares. This is a video about a plane trip.
If your in Business Class, you could get lounge access correct?
Yes. Also if you have BA executive silver status, which ever class of seat your flying. You can also take a companion in the lounge with silver status with you.
What is the music name for the approach/landing part?
This flight was a year ago ? 7:15 incorrect that is not American Flagship business class
Yes it was and yes it is. Flagship Business refers to all of American’s long haul business class products.
Looks like only J class availability on the INV legs on those dates, so the whole fare books into J (fully flex). INV flights tend to be very popular!
Another great video , always have good informed content 👍Merry Covid xmas Paul 🎅🌲
Thank you Peter, same to you!
The food looked delish. Thanks for another great report!
I hate facing the wrong direction on a train, I can imagine its even worse on a plane. Especially at take off, your facing the ground instead of the sky
Agreed that the CX lounge is preferable. While no The Pier in HKG, the noodle bar is great. My AA 777-200 to MIA was all forward facing fortunately..
I notice you don't have airplane mode enabled, but in case you don't know you can still keep WiFi and GPS on in airplane mode. It will reduce your battery draining from searching for cellular signal 😃
During the pandemic I've made a conscious effort to focus on positive things and push negative things out of my life. I've found myself more and more looking forward to your videos. Even the criticism is done from a place of positivity and wanting to see the services improve. Thanks Paul, this channel really is a Good Thing™️
Thank you! Have a great Christmas and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed watching.
@@Paul_Lucas my next flight may be in business class.
Enjoyed this video, thanks Paul 🙂
Can't wait to watch this video, love your content Paul, always cheers me up :)
Glad you enjoy it!
